Comments: News from Oak Cliff: My good pal Charlie Brooks (Cl of '64) rang me up to say he scored two tickets to the March 14th performance of Michael M. Murphee (sp?) at the Kessler. Tickets were a reasonable $24 each. He was encouraged to upgrade to the VIP pass which gets you an hour backstage with MMM and a chance to wish him Happy Birthday in person. Only an extra $100 for the upgrade ... (where is my wallet?). Charlie opted to just post his b-day greetings on FaceBook. Lake Palestine News: From the "Dang, that Hurt" Dept. comes word that our Ronny Jarman suffered major dental damage from a post hole drilling auger that launched out of control. Knocked him six feet backwards, broke out 4 front teeth and damaged an existing lower partial plate. Scheduled for major repair work on Weds. in Tyler. He asks that we NOT send any Peanut Brittle.
Comments: Peaches, I am doing well. I am still doing home dialysis, which except for a 30 minute afternoon drain is done at night. I am still praying that some day I will be able to get a kidney transplant. I also do physical therapy three times a week. Like the rest of you, I just hope the weather warms up and the sun comes out. My brother, Roe called me early this morning from Dekalb and said they were under water because it has rained so much there.
Comments: Kathleeen, how are you doing?
Comments: Kathleen, it is very difficult to see my mother not being able to move herself or eat anything. However, it gives her comfort for me to be there. That is one of the few joys she has left in life and I am committed. I treasue every minute I am the room with her even if she is sleeping. She is as sweet as ever and never complains.
Comments: You are a wonderful daughter to visit your mother every day. I always had a hard time visiting my parents when my parents were so ill. It was hard for me to see them so ill. May God bless you and your mother.
Comments: Thank you Charlotte and Lynell. Her body is strong evidentally. We have been very fortunate she does not have any bed sores. The aids get her out of bed once a day and she goes to her recliner for a hour or two. She never says much (but mother never was a big talker) but she is aware I am there.
Comments: Peaches, I'm thinking about and praying for you and your mother.
Comments: Peaches, your daily visits mean the world to your sweet mom. You two have always been so good for one another.
Comments: Charlotte, thanks for asking about my mother. She is about the same. She never complains about her situation. She is sleeping a lot more now. Which is a blessing. When I go see her in the evenings if she is a sleep I wake her up and tell her I love her very much and she still says back to me "me you too". She started that while in Rehab. It is have been a year and seven months since here stroke. She is so sweet and never complains. Thank God we have each other.
Comments: Good one Kathleen, but not all at once...haaaaaaa
Comments: Charlotte, I think you were saying that you are inviting ALL of us to your cabin in Colorado for some fun on the slopes.
Comments: I am laughing ...reread my post and can't believe...once again I didn't read it before I posted. These gadgets drive me crazy.... Can anyone figure out what I was trying to say?
Comments: I hear the ice has melted up there in Big D. Hope so. Do you expect more? We have dreary drab days down here...will the sn eve him gain? Peaches, how is your mother?
Comments: Dan, good to see you on the Guestbook again! Regarding "geocaching", the best place to start is online at www.geocaching.com where you can open a free account and jump right into the fun. So far I've tracked down 958 caches. As far as what GPS to use, I made the mistake of beginning with a $79 Garmin and it was too low-end. I had to manually input coordinates and info for each geocache. So I moved up to a "DeLorme Earthmate PN-60" which runs about $225 but is way more than you need as a beginner. It provides quite a bit of info you won't really need (like tide reports and sunrise times). I get good reports on the "Garmin eTrex 20" ($159 to $179). Some beginners go with the entry level "Magellan eXplorist GC" ($105 to $129). The better GPSs allow you to use a USB connection to your computer to upload the geocache info to the GPS (stuff like the coordinates, full descriptions, hints, logs of others who have found the cache, size and difficulty of the hidden containers etc.) Prices for GPS's can run into the $600 range but that is overkill for someone just interested in geocaching. Amazon and eBay are good places to shop for the best prices. Just make sure you understand the return policies in the event you aren't satisfied with your purchase. I did a quick online check and see that there are 161 geocaches hidden within 5 miles of Paris, TX. Should keep you busy right in your own backyard. Sorry to hear you are dealing with a bad wound situation. Those things can get out of hand. I am reminded of Terry Hackler (cl of '64) and his two-year struggle with a foot wound from a nail that punctured his shoe. Hope all goes well for you with that.
Comments: I'm holding my breath here, but typing in those CATCHMA (or whatever they call them) letters seems to have stopped our spam posts. Dan, nice to hear you're RV shopping. I'm sure we have some experts in our group.
Comments: Going stir crazy here at the ranch in Paris.not only the weather but I've been off left for since December 28th.baylor is a great hospital to. Be in for 2 weeks.still go into wound care there weekly! I'm getting ready to purchase my 5 th rv.looking at a 5th wheel lite. anyone owned one and how did it handle? For GO John. What portable gps would you recommend a,beginner geocacher purchase and can I learn your skill by researching the Internet? Thanks everyone for posting.I enjoy our site!
Comments: Charlotte, congratulations on your winning. I bet y'alls horses are beautiful!!!!! I went to work yesterday driving while the snow was slowly coming down. After i got to work it started snowing more and was so pretty to watch out my big glass walls. When I left work (we close at 1:00 at Fridays) I took the back streets going McKinney Avenue. I think everyone else that worked downtown was doing the same thing at the time I l left. I drove very slow and it was okay but once I went to the grocery store and went home I stayed home. Had to cancel taking my niece, and 2 great nieces to Chocolate Angel today for lunch.......just did not want to chance driving. However, if it gets better late this afternoon I will venture out to see mother.....taking the streets not 635 there are not bridges to cross. I will not go if not safe.
Comments: Whoa! I'm writing this on my iPhone...sure substitutes weird stuff for and. The other weird one is supposed to be NET.
Comments: Hi all, Sorry this is happening to all the class sites. I think ''63 has been fortunate until lately. This Nt is a scary place sometimes. Down here close to the Gulf has been cold for us, but thankfully no ice on roads. It is damp here so the cold goes through to the bone. Brrrrrrr! The Houston Rodeo is in full swing. The Saltgrass Trail Riders arrived this evening DNS will be in the opening parade in downtown tomorrow. They have had miserable weather for the past two weeks. The BBQ Cook off is going on now. I bet our classmate, Phil Pelch, is there tonight. He has friends cooking there. I opted for the original Carraba's on Kirby where i was warm instead. Our cutting horse, riden by our trainer, made it to the finals today at the Rodeo in the horse event.s category. He will go tomorrow night. Last year he was Champion. We were so excited...and have one of those belt buckles that is bigger than your head to prove it...haaaaa. I hope he does well tomorrow. Stay warm everyone!
Comments: Did any of you go to work today? My husband went to the store this morning and I was worried that he might not make it back home safely. Fortunately, he did ok. My friend who grew up in Buffalo, New York tells me it is easier to drive up there because they get snow several feet thick and you don't get the ice we have here. She says they use salt on the streets and that works well. I am not sure what we use on the streets.
Comments: I still work also and I check the S.O.C. website every day before I start working. I don't post very ofter but I read it every week day. Enjoy reading what everyone is doing too.
Comments: I still work so I do not have time to post much. However, I still check in and see what y'all are saying. I am on Facebook but do not say much there either. Occasionally, I do respond to others. Keep talking, this is a good website. Thanks, Lynell.
Comments: Lynell, I agree we don't have very many posters these days. I wish we could change this. It is more fun if we have classmates who talk to each other and who are interested in each other. Just talk about anything that is going on with you these days. You might want to enter the HGTV dream house contest. It is free and all you have to do to enter is post.
Comments: No spam since the annoying CATCHA has been in place. I hope we can get rid of it in a few days. Honestly, so few people post on here these days, it probably doesn't matter. Lots of lurkers, not many with something to say. Oh, well.
Comments: Linda, I notified Phyllis Kelley regarding the SOC 65 site virus attacks and they are looking into it. Tommy Barr has taken over the financial end of the site and they are checking the virus problems out that have been attacking the site. Nothing can be posted on the guestbook unless it is approved by the committee now. I believe the 50th reunion is set for September 12, 2015, but a place has not been named. The 65 alumni are awaiting gifts of funding for the reunion as all the funds were used up during the 45th. As soon as they have the funding, I am sure they will have a hotel set aside for the reunion. It will only be a one night affair this time. Phyllis Kelley is the main person handling the reunion. Others on board I believe are Jerry Vining, Tommy Dippery, and Tommy Barr. Phyllis posts on the site and also on Facebook.
Comments: Back to work today. But will probably leave early. Thank goodness for an understanding boss. Still sick after 3 weeks, just can't seem to shake this upper respiratory thingee. May end up at the emergency room tomorrow if I can't get rid of this fever. Hope everyone stays in unless you absolutely have to get out.
Comments: Sorry to have to do this, but we have had spam posts of late. I have enacted the CAPTCHA feature to try and prevent this abuse. I know this is a pain, and I hope we can remove this obstacle soon.
Comments: Linda, you are wise to not drive. If you have another wreck, you could loose your car insurance. Just heard the Dallas schools will be closed tomorrow. This superintendent is good to announce it early. When I was teaching, you had to get up early to find out if there would be school that day. I can't wait till SUMMER! I hate this cold weather. I haven't seen a car drive down our street all day. Everyone is staying in. Our neighborhood is hilly and too many of my neighbors have learned the hard way how easy it is to have a wreck,
Comments: I see that the SOC 65 site is still down. Any idea if it will be up w/info on the upcoming 50 yr reunion? My company closed for the day due to the icy roads. I had already called in for a V-day. No way am I driving today or tomorrow. I drive 70 miles roundtrip since my office was moved Sept 2013. On 12/20/14, I was sitting on Arbrook at Cooper St in Arlington waiting for the light. Two trucks collided pushing one into a truck in the left turn lane two rows over from my Sonata. Debri went flying. It hit my front bumper and broke my windshield. When the cars finally stopped, there were 6 cars involved. We just got the Sonata repaired, when on 2/5/15, I was rear ended driving home from work in my Pruis C. The light had changed to yellow, I stopped and the truck behind me didn't. The guy and I exchanged info and he had insurance but no drivers license. He had a passport from El Salvador. Police came and he got a ticket for tail gating. But no ticket for no drivers license. How does anyone get insurance w/o a drivers license? I am having my ins company handle my repairs. The other guy ins adjuster will not return my ins co calls, so I reported them to the State. Suddenly, they are now responding. I definitely am staying home today and tomorrow. No more crashes for me !!!
Comments: I hope everyone is indoors today, safe from the ice and sleet. P,ease don't take chances! |
