Comments: I live near Emory in Rains County. Last year, we had an entry in the local Sheriff's Report in the newspaper of a man who had recently moved here from the Dallas area. He saw a raccoon and thought it looked cute so he put it in his car. Shortly thereafter, the man was treated by the local EMS and the raccoon escaped.
Comments: Linda, I doubt if it's the same raccoon, but there are alot of raccoons in Oak Cliff, probably because of all the trees and the number of creeks. Also, alot of possums and -- needless to say -- squirrels. I haven't seen any coyotes, though, and hope I don't. They cannot peaceably coexist in the City.
Comments: NO I'M NOT!
Comments: We had a neighbor who fed coyotes, too. One night her dog disappeared. Then she was evicted and her furniture put in the yard, so she lived in the yard for a few weeks. The house was torn down and the property is part of a snazzy new development across the street. She was one peculiar chick.
Comments: FEEDING THE COYOTES?????? How dumb can she be??? Anyone who has a prize cat (or any cat) should keep it indoors, .but.....she should have been reported to animal control!!!!!!! We have a deer feeder at the ranch with a motion camera. Guess who loves that corn too?? Yep...raccoons...five and six at a time. So cute to see those spooky little eyes shining in the photos.
Comments: I am glad to hear that the raccoons are coming back. We had an epidemic in our part of town and they estimated 245 raccoons had died. My husband saw one recently after a couple of years without seeing any of them. What we seem to have the most of are squirrels. I counted five in my yard yesterday. Ever once in a while we see a possum running around. Our neighbors now have their cats back. The coyotes were eating all the small animals and we went through a period of no squirrels, cats, rabbits and small dogs. I think they city may have helped eliminate a lot of the coyotes. One neighbor was feeding the coyotes and to her surprise they ate her prize cat.
Comments: Phyllis, the racoon may have made it to my son's house. He lives at the end of Oak Cliff Blvd, across from a creek and right near the DART station. They had been bothered with racoons getting into their garbage cans this year and then one day I was going over three and had my daughter-in-law and 2 great grandkids in my car and we saw the mother racoon and 3 babies disappear down the drain by the curb. My daughter-in-law is not that fond of dogs or cats, so you can imagine her reaction.
Comments: Yay!! Already 4 inches of glorious rain at the ranch!!!!!! AND, we put down fertilizer in the pastures last Saturday!!! We will need that hay!!! I hope no one got caught in rising water.
Comments: Thank you, Veterans! Without non-draft dodging men and brave volunteers, including many SOCites and my husband of 44 years, GMG3 David H. Smith, I can't imagine how life would be.
Comments: We do a little neighborhood celebration at neighbor hood clubhouse. We do the national anthem and usually have vets stand and any active duty . Then me and my buds do dogs and burgers.
Comments: DITTO Sharon !! This is not just a day to cook out or be with our families.....it is MEMORIAL DAY weekend to honor our veterans and to REMEMBER!!!
Comments: Just want to say that I hope you all have a safe and great weekend. And, for all of you who served our country, thank you.
Comments: Charlotte I am going to respond to that private email before you do and pretend I'm you and get your share of the money. Ha! ha!
Comments: I love all the wildlife stories. It definitely is spring. We had an interesting experience recently, right before our move. We had an indoor-outdoor cat, for whom we left a window open as a makeshift cat door. When the weather got so very cold last winter, 2 feral mother cats and their 4 babies started coming in the window, too. The mother cats were too wary of humans to allow us to approach them, but we were able to socialize 3 of the 4 babies and found good adoptive homes for 2 of them. All of them would come in the house to eat and, sometimes, spend the night. We also walked in one night and saw a massive raccoon -- in the house! -- eating the cat food. Upon seeing us, s/he ran up the chimney. Meanwhile, one of the mother cats got pregnant again, and we had borrowed a Hav-A-Hart trap, hoping to catch her in it, so that we could take her to get spayed. The spay-neuter clinics require ferals to be in traps. We never were able to catch the mama cat; she was too smart to take the bait. But, we did catch the raccoon, late one night. We loaded him/her? -- still in the trap -- into the car trunk and drove over to a stretch of Clarendon that runs by the creek and let him/her out; s/he made a beeline down into the creekbed. We were parked next to a house with a yard full of pit bulls, who were raising cain. Lights started coming on in the house, and we were terrified that someone would come running out with a gun, demanding to know what we were doing (and wouldn't be too pleased that we were loosing a marauding raccoon in their hood). We were unable to get the mama cat fixed, but -- at least -- were able to get the coon out of the chimney before we moved! ![]()
Comments: Kathleen, it is really spring, judging by the number of adolescent squirrels and mockingbirds around here! Charlotte, congrats on your net-worth windfall, I think!

Comments: Bill and I like to go to White Rock Lake and watch the cottontails play. Well, they disappeared about eight months ago. We thought they had died. Well, two days ago the whole family came out of the woods (babies and all). You can really tell that it is springtime.
Comments: I think all of these squirrels are offspring from Buddy, our first squirrel. She died in childbirth. It was very sad.
Comments: Kathleen: The squirrel family has gotten out of control. Joan is now feeding 6-8 on a daily basis and several of them will come to the door for her to let them inside. They don't venture far from the door (that's a good thing). Lilly is still having babies as quick as she can and Bob is still the Alpha male. We can identify Bob by the slit in his left ear. The wannabe alpha male is Chunk. He has two large chunks missing from his left ear, probably thanks to Bob. We can identify Lilly because she is always pregnant and looks tired. The rest are younger and have no distinguishing marks YET. Our resident hawk grabbed a dove last weekend and the feathers flew. So far, he seems content to leave the squirrels alone. Every time a squirrel gets run over within a block of our house, I have to go pick it up and do a brief autopsy to check the ears. I feel just a little foolish when doing that! We continually warn "our" squirrels to always stand up and look both ways before crossing the street. So far it seems to be working. We have had a raccoon family coming at night to get the leftover bird seed. I have relocated 2 of them, but the third one is proving to be more elusive. Sooner or later, I will catch him.
Comments: I think there was a sad ending to Barry's squirrel tales....??? Barry, thank you for what you do for our VETS. Such wonderful programs for them these days. I wish there had been help for our Vietnam Vets as soon as they got home. Thankfully, there is help now in what you and others do.
Comments: Good morning Barry, You haven't made any comments lately about the squirrel family that lives in your back yard. Are you still friends and what is the latest saga in their lives?
Comments: Remember, the Port O'Connor Warriors Weekend is next weekend. If you want to see a bunch of Patriots, try to stop by.
Comments: It is just so hard to lose friends. Life shouldn't work like this.
Comments: I received word from Bill Akins that the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) will be participating in Dewaine Walker's burial at the DFW National Cemetery tomorrow. Bill and B. J. Field give graciously of their time to be a part of the PGR and honor our veterans. Here is a link to the PGR Calendar entry for SGT. Walter Dewaine Walker: http://www.pgrtexas.org/North%20Texas/2014/May/May-08-Walker.htm
Comments: Ronny, you guys were so darlin. LOVE the socks with the shorts (or swimsuits). I'm sorry for your loss of your good friend Dewaine. Sadly, Our loses seem to be too frequent these days.
Comments: I was very proud of my husband Bill because last week he was honored at the Park Cities Club. He is retiring May 31, after 41 years of teaching at SMU. I guess you could call the occasion "bittersweet." I felt sad that he was leaving a career that at times has given him so much satisfaction. I just hope he enjoys his retirement.
Comments: Ronny, I was thinking about the old days and recalled that the year after you bought that boat you and I found ourselves signing up in the same National Guard unit and awaiting Basic Training somewhere with the Army. We spent the next 6 years attending monthly meetings at the armory on California Crossing & Luna Road along with half a dozen players from the Dallas Cowboys. Today Ronny sent me the following pic taken just last year. From left to right are David Jones (SOC '62), Ronny Jarman, Eddie Bruner, and Dewaine Walker (all SOC '63). The occassion was the funeral of Ronny's former spouse Kathy Buster (SOC '65). Dewaine died of a heart attack. ![]()
