Ever notice that anytime there appears to be a "shortage" of government funds, at any level, the FIRST thing they talk about "having" to cut are the things that are the basis of government? At the city level it is police, fire and streets. The county, it's roads, bridges and Sheriff's Dept. The state, it's DPS, highways and licenses. Nationally it is SS, medicare and the military. Nobody ever talks about all the non-essentials and feel-good projects that make up so much of our wasted tax dollars. Just on example; If they would stop planting, watering, trimming and mowing all the medians on the streets and highways, millions would be saved.

Sam, I heard about another plan that would impact current recipients. It would reduce the yearly benefits by $300 per person.

Kathleen, don't believe everything Obama says.  Wait a minute, don't believe anything he says.  His saying that SS checks may not go out beginning 8/3 was a shameful scare tactic to get his way.  And talk about SS reform most often refers to those not yet receiving SS, so we're all as safe as we can be..........given that we're being governed by people who understand none of it.

I'm not worried about my SS check. Many experts have stated that the treasury can continue to pay ALL the obligations of the US after Aug 2. That date was chosen by the Administration to scare many older Americans. President Obama even made one speech saying that those checks might not be mailed on the 3rd. Maybe someone should tell him that SS checks have not been mailed on the 3rd of the month since 1997. With the exception of folks who were already receiving SS back then and still get their checks on the 3rd (they would probably all be in their 80s and 90s) the checks have been dispersed throughout the month for over 14 years.

Lynell, I could ask a question that has been on my mind lately. The question is are any of you worried about the government defaulting causing you to loose your Social Security? Since I paid into Social Security for years that is my money and I don't see how anyone could cancel or cut my premiums. They keep saying that Social Security is stable until the year 2037.

JS:

To save time and to get this campaign rolling, have the first batch of buttons shipped to you.  Since you volunteered for the campaign treasurer's job, go ahead and pay the bill and start distributing the buttons.  Order another 100,000 and have them shipped to me.  I have ordered some "Lynelle is Swell" neon for the Miata and I will have them send the bill to you.  All you donors out there, send all contributions to JS, and if you need buttons, contact JS.

I am digging that campaign button.  In fact, I have something in mind like the outfit modeled by our own Miss Hatcher.

Thank you Lynell.  The photos are wonderful and it could almost make you feel like you where there if you had not missed so much of the conversations that you know were outstanding.  So glad to see so many could enjoy the day in great fellowship. Howdy to those I missed -

I am looking forward to August.  Already have my reservation in to Jim Bailey.  Hope everyone can make it back again to enjoy the next one.  Would love to meet the many 62ers that came for the first time.

I am with Sandy JS, save me a button!

Never a dull moment here!  JS, what a terrific story about your friend finding the guy's wedding band in the sand.  Oh, put me & Don on the waiting list for a "Lynell is Swell" badge when the first batch arrives!!

Hated I had to miss the Sat lunch at Peaches' house.  Don's bro & sister-n-law drove up from Hstn & spent the wkend with us, so I had to cancel my RSVP I had made to Peaches.  Sounds like it was a real good turn out & pics are great!

Memo to Candidate Lynell:

As your behind-the scenes puppetmaster I must caution you about making favorable comments about the ability of other countries to make "good cars". In fact, make a note that we have to get rid of your aging Toyota 4Runner before the campaign begins in earnest.

Perhaps we can find a classic 1957 Plymouth stationwagon for you to campaign in. Something that screams "Detroit Made".

It was really great to see the SOC folks from all the classes. Karen and Charles, be sure to look at the pictures I took. They're on the Events page at the top link. Cyn, we missed you! What a great group of smiling faces!

(JS, this is for you: ) By the way, next time you're in Dallas, I know a good spot for you to treasure hunt.

I am from the 62 class and attended your gathering at Peaches Saturday. It was a great day for Carolyn and I to see SOCites from our and other years. I am always accused of talking too much and Saturday was no exception...but I was constantly asked if I really had a stroke 5 weeks ago!? YES I DID and I am doing fine! Visiting with Paul Speaks, Jimmy & Karen Powell, Pat Rogers and other 62 grads was fun but other year grads now seem like us. When in one's teens a year difference seems eternal but now as we approach eternity, a year difference is nothing and memories overlap. In 63/64 I was in Spain,Italy, France, Germany,Lebanon (turned 20 in Beirut)and enjoyed a nice shipboard cruise...thanks to an Aircraft Carrier named USS Independence. Listening to SOC grads from before and after 62, our stories all have a similar ring. Peaches, you have a beautiful place and we enjoyed our visit immensely. CAUTION..the peach vino is a country wine and has no sulphites for long storage and may taste like kool-aid, BUT IT AIN'T!!()!

We had such a wonderful time at the luncheon on Saturday.  Thanks so much to the hostesses and hosts for making us feel so welcome.  The food was wonderful (ever thought of a cookbook??) and we had such a great time visiting with everyone.  Peaches, your home is so lovely and you are one of the cutest "little bees" we've every seen.  Thanks again to everyone involved!

As typical - the luncheon looked like a huge success!  I would have expected nothing less from this group.  So glad you all had a wonderful time - missed you all and looking forward to seeing many of you in August.

John - the story is priceless.  That is what life should be about - people helping people and enjoying life.  Made my day too.  Thanks for sharing.

I am with Sandy - great planning for our precious Lynell to lead us out of the current political situation.  You got my vote too my friend.

Have a great week all.

Tales from the Class of '62 - I keep up with Don Bundy who is also into metal detecting. Somehow he married Betty Brown (also of '62) and they now live in Escondido, CA. Here is his uplifting report from last Friday's visit to the beach:

"Daughter & four grandkids all at the beach, Betty playing with one in the sand and yours truly is MD'ing close by.  About 20+ minutes a couple of girls (middle school age) come up to me and tell me that their Dad has lost his White Gold Wedding Band in the sand about 300 yards up the beach and would I come and look for it. He (the Dad) had already gone and bought a rake at the store and had raked a rather large area with negative results.

I said sure and followed them up the beach to where the husband & wife are standing by their blanket and surfboard and things.  We greet and I ask 'about where do you think it is?'. He tells me that as he was taking his wet suit off he removed his wedding band to hand to his wife and into the sand it went.

Looking at the raked area,  blanket, and small pile of trash that he had raked up I began searching the general area.  To shorten the story a bit I first got a signal on a penny, then a quarter and this family is on pins and needles.  Next I hit two bottle caps and threw them on the blanket and told them not to give up.

I had circled the blanket in a rather large area and was starting to go around again when I got THE hit, dug in the sand with my sand scoop and there is his ring in the bottom of the scoop.  The mid 30's couple both started crying. He took the ring out of the scoop and put it on his finger then gave me a big hug, as did his wife. I told him that I was so glad that we had found it.  He could not say enough thank-you's between the quivering lip and chin.

Funny thing is I never got his name, nor he mine. The  absolute joy and happiness of the moment was enough and all that was  needed.  Funny how circumstances happen:  I was hunting at the other end of the beach at just the right time, for his 2 daughters to walk up, ask me to come, for me to follow them back to their blanket area and for him and his wife's sorrow and grief to turn to pure joy in about 25 minutes. Those 25 minutes made my whole day. No names given, no rewards, nothing but happiness and tears.  And thats the rest of the story."
