Maybe Lynell should take a lesson from Obama and employ some "scare tactics" to enhance her own campaign. We could trot out the following political ad:

Vote for Lynell or Risk a "Home Visit"

Vote Lynell ... Or Else!

That one person who wishes we would not discuss politics here will never discuss her political position on this guest book....however, I will say that "Swell Lynell" would NEVER cheat on anything Where is my button JS????

Actually, I make Bisquick dumplings with sage in them.

And I think everyone should share in paying taxes, not just the wealthy.

Cynthia, I have a strong feeling that Lynelle doesn't make dumplings, but cheats by cutting canned, raw biscuits into fourths and drops them in the chicken and broth.

Sam, Before I give up my $300 dollars a year, the Congress would have to make sure the wealthy in this country were paying their fair share of the taxes. For once, I agree with Jack about what the government considers cutting first. We need to cut out a lot of the pork projects and reform the tax code. We need to invest in public works, green projects, education, and anything that will contribute to economic growth. I am a strong believer in Keynesian econmics and I wish the American people understood it better. We are going to have a terrible situation if we default on our debts.
I know some of you don't appreciate talking about politics, but some of you really enjoy it. I think nowadays we are nicer to each other discussing politics than we used to be. Frankly, the person who said she wished we didn't discuss politics is the one person I would love to hear what she has to say.

Lynell - if you were to feel the need in your campaign to promise a chicken in every pot - would you please provide us a good recipe for the dumplings to go with it?

I just want everyone to know that I am keeping my promise to myself by not engaging in political debates over our current government.  Just because they can't be trusted to do anything but make themselves more powerful and you can't believe a thing they say is no reason for me to lower myself to debate the topic with my fellow SOC'ites.  Just because we are "senior" citizens does not mean that we do not have power.  And, because of that power, we are always the first group to be targeted with scare tactics.  SS checks will be mailed or there will be h*^# to pay and they don't want that.  Now I feel better.

That's good news, Phil. The rough ride will be worth it in the long run.  Tell Linda she is in my thoughts and I send best wishes to her during this time.

Okay Kathleen, if you sacrificing $300/year of SS benefits would directly aid achieving a balanced budget for the federal government, would you do that?

Ever notice that anytime there appears to be a "shortage" of government funds, at any level, the FIRST thing they talk about "having" to cut are the things that are the basis of government? At the city level it is police, fire and streets. The county, it's roads, bridges and Sheriff's Dept. The state, it's DPS, highways and licenses. Nationally it is SS, medicare and the military. Nobody ever talks about all the non-essentials and feel-good projects that make up so much of our wasted tax dollars. Just on example; If they would stop planting, watering, trimming and mowing all the medians on the streets and highways, millions would be saved.

Sam, I heard about another plan that would impact current recipients. It would reduce the yearly benefits by $300 per person.

Kathleen, don't believe everything Obama says.  Wait a minute, don't believe anything he says.  His saying that SS checks may not go out beginning 8/3 was a shameful scare tactic to get his way.  And talk about SS reform most often refers to those not yet receiving SS, so we're all as safe as we can be..........given that we're being governed by people who understand none of it.

Comments:
I'm not worried about my SS check. Many experts have stated that the treasury can continue to pay ALL the obligations of the US after Aug 2. That date was chosen by the Administration to scare many older Americans. President Obama even made one speech saying that those checks might not be mailed on the 3rd. Maybe someone should tell him that SS checks have not been mailed on the 3rd of the month since 1997. With the exception of folks who were already receiving SS back then and still get their checks on the 3rd (they would probably all be in their 80s and 90s) the checks have been dispersed throughout the month for over 14 years.

Lynell, I could ask a question that has been on my mind lately. The question is are any of you worried about the government defaulting causing you to loose your Social Security? Since I paid into Social Security for years that is my money and I don't see how anyone could cancel or cut my premiums. They keep saying that Social Security is stable until the year 2037.

JS:

To save time and to get this campaign rolling, have the first batch of buttons shipped to you.  Since you volunteered for the campaign treasurer's job, go ahead and pay the bill and start distributing the buttons.  Order another 100,000 and have them shipped to me.  I have ordered some "Lynelle is Swell" neon for the Miata and I will have them send the bill to you.  All you donors out there, send all contributions to JS, and if you need buttons, contact JS.

Thank you Lynell.  The photos are wonderful and it could almost make you feel like you where there if you had not missed so much of the conversations that you know were outstanding.  So glad to see so many could enjoy the day in great fellowship. Howdy to those I missed -

I am looking forward to August.  Already have my reservation in to Jim Bailey.  Hope everyone can make it back again to enjoy the next one.  Would love to meet the many 62ers that came for the first time.

I am with Sandy JS, save me a button!

Never a dull moment here!  JS, what a terrific story about your friend finding the guy's wedding band in the sand.  Oh, put me & Don on the waiting list for a "Lynell is Swell" badge when the first batch arrives!!

Hated I had to miss the Sat lunch at Peaches' house.  Don's bro & sister-n-law drove up from Hstn & spent the wkend with us, so I had to cancel my RSVP I had made to Peaches.  Sounds like it was a real good turn out & pics are great!

Memo to Candidate Lynell:

As your behind-the scenes puppetmaster I must caution you about making favorable comments about the ability of other countries to make "good cars". In fact, make a note that we have to get rid of your aging Toyota 4Runner before the campaign begins in earnest.

Perhaps we can find a classic 1957 Plymouth stationwagon for you to campaign in. Something that screams "Detroit Made".
