Why couldn't they have renamed Zumwalt BEFORE we went there?  I remember going to the State Fair in the 9th grade right after we got our letter jackets.  I don't know how many times we were asked "What's that Z stand for?"  Trying to explain didn't do any good.

Yes I caught my misspelled word, should have been elementary.  It's bedtime for me and I have already taken my sleeping pill so if I rambled on too much I apologize ahead of time to all..

Lynell, change is inevitable regarding changes in the names of our schools, highways, etc. remember when Loop 12 was called Loop 12, now it's something else LBJ I think, (one reason I can't find my way around Dallas anymore and I lived there all my life...HA).  I know you Lisbonites are hurt and angry over the change, had they waited another 20-30 years to do it, may not have caused any harm or with less hurt to those that love that school.  I think that when it is done during OUR lifetime that it seems to bother us the most or get our attention right away.   Maybe they feel this H I Holland deserves a school named after that individual and maybe they felt that the Beloved Lisbon School would be perfect for the name change, who knows whats in the minds of our officials doing these changes.  Unfortunately they happen alot of times without our approval.  I am sad for all you that love your little Lisbon School and it still is the same school, just honoring another but still with Lisbon attached.  H I Holland Elemtary at Lisbon, so it's not gone altogether.   Hang in there. Be glad they did not suggest to tear it down and rebuild then name it another name, that would be a lot worse I think.  But this is just me rattling on.

I tried to send an e-mail to DISD about the name change, but imagine my surprise when the DISD website didn't work.  Here's what I tried to say:

Hi,

I went to Lisbon in the 1950's and learned just about everything I need to know from my splendid, caring teachers. Today I learned the school was renamed to H.I. Holland Elementary.

Why? Who is H.I. Holland? I look forward to your response.

LS

They didn't allow many letters in their emails, hence the brief signature. Cynthia wisely pointed out the name of the principal is the same as the school name.  Hmmmmm.....

I am very happy I live in Dallas, my beloved home town, but pay school taxes to Richardson.

If you Lisbonites had been smart enough to attend Clinton P. Russell you would not be having such angst all these years later.

Sharon, you are right about Harrell Budd's name being changed from Trinity Heights.  When I went there it was already Harrell Budd, but I believe some from the class of 1964 SOC went there it was Trinity Heights.   Have not heard any news about the reunion with Storey, but know it is in the makings right now.   Sad to hear about the change in the name for the Lisbon School, will have to tell Gary about that one.

I saw the renaming of Lisbon this morning and thought about all you Lisbonites.  Wasn't Harrell Budd originally Trinity Heights?  Has anyone heard any news on the Boude Storey reunion?  The elementary school I attended before moving to Oak Cliff, Stephen F. Austin, was renamed the Health Magnet School before it was torn down.  Its site is now the Plaza parking lot of Baylor Medical Center at Gaston and Washington.

Lynelle:  I may have to get the name of your lung specialist.  After ten days, I've been told that I don't have pneumonia, but rather asthmatic bronchitis.  Still not well and getting real testy.

I don't get it?  Is the son now the principal and did he push to rename the school after his father?  GRRRRR!

Did not go there but share your pain.  Throw out the name to honor the current - below is taken staight from their own page about the history of the school.  Guess Elizabeth should have become a teacher?

Lisbon, a farming community southwest of Oak Cliff, was founded in the 1840s by a pioneer from Arkansas, James K. Sloan. Apparently, the name Lisbon was the nickname of a pioneer's daughter, Elizabeth Williamson, who later became a local hotel owner.

The city's cemetery was established in 1871, and a post office was established in the 1880's. In its early days, it was the first stop of a stagecoach heading out of Dallas to some of Texas' central cities. Lisbon operated as an incorporated town. The intersection of Lancaster and Ann Arbor roads was the town's center of commerce.

In 1929, the community of about 3,000 was annexed by Dallas. Oak Cliff was annexed in 1903. A 240-bed hospital for veterans opened in 1940 on the southwest corner of Lancaster Road and Ann Arbor roads. It's 1955 nine-story brick addition mushroomed into what today is the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which many of the current Lisbon School's volunteers are employed

Tanya, what a great keepsake for Gary to have held onto all these decades.  Valentine's Day was very big at Lisbon -- then in junior high, it sort of went away as I recall.  Too bad.

27 degrees???? Come on guys.  I just got home from Chico...8 degrees yeah 8 degrees and I had to dig out two feet of dirt to get under floor joist and crawl to a ruptured copper water line and repair to keep the water on.  It appears that some kind of varmit loves to eat at insulation on the water lines.  The pond and water tanks are frozen and the cows had to have water...Farming sure is fun!!!

I'm with you Charlotte! Lost a lot of time, money, and effort with the landscaping. The good news is I don't have much left to cover now. Sure you don't want to team up and buy a villa in Tuscany?

Obviously, I must not be ready for retirement - I would rather be at work than being connected from home and not able to do anything here.  Starting to think there is an internet problem.  Having issues with opening mail from work and ATT mail at home.  Gonna be a long day...  Stay warm Bill and all.

Dear John:

Please accept my sincere condolences in the death of your beautiful daughter.  As a parent, no loss is worse.  My son, too, has struggled with drug addiction and continues to struggle with depression and the physical ravages resulting from his former drug use, so I am familiar with some of the ups and downs you may have experienced.  May you find comfort in your family and friends, your memories, your faith and the knowledge that nothing you did caused -- or could have prevented -- her fate.

Yours,

Phyllis

Well, four days off last week didn't help my outlook at all!  I have pneumonia (but I'm at work) and Steve has pneumonia and an ear infection.  We sound like a TB ward.  I'm really hoping that the weather doesn't get as bad tonight as they are predicting because it's no fun being home with another sick person.

JS, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
