Yesterday, Bill and I took a drive up to Tyler to see the flowers. If you haven't been to Tyler to see the neighborhood marked the Azalea trail and the beautiful Rose Garden it is well worth the effort. The Tyler Rose Garden had beautiful azaleas, camellias, ferns and several variety of roses blooming. I was also struck by how much greener it is there than here and the fresh air was wonderful to breathe.

I can't put them in my will because they have no way to pay off my debts and Joan assures me that she doesn't have rabies!

Barry, when you're eventually admitted to the Emergency Room (as will surely happen) with a raging case of rabies, don't come crying to us.

Barry, I think you are going to have to put Buddy and 'her' offspring in your will.

Buddy's 2 kids are now living in the back yard and the boy ate 2 pecans out of my hand yesterday afternoon.  The girl is much less trusting.  So, all is good in Southlake and Joan is happy again.

Last Buddy report.......

I know, I know it's just a squirrel.  Joan was sad all last week because we had not had a Buddy sighting.  I told her yesterday morning on the way to church that we would see Buddy before the end of the day.  True to my prediction, at about 3PM, Buddy showed up in the front yard.  Still remembering that we had trapped her and taken her to the vet, she would not get too close.  We put out pecans and she ate them all.  Later in the day, she was in a tree near the deck where she was trapped.  First time in over 2 weeks.

I think your time off for Lent took the cutting edge off your wit.  Maybe in time, you will again be the sarcastic Johnny that we all love.  Did you get the possum that I sent to you last week?  I'll get the tracking number if you have not received it.

Kathleen, I agree with your husband.  I want to hold a newspaper and read it from cover to cover.  I guess I am one of the dying breed.  Like Lynell, I was a DTH subscriber until it folded.  Then had to go with DMN.  The cost is getting out of hand, so I may be forced to cancel.  Back in high school, we took both papers!  And, yes, Charlotte, I remember getting black ink on my hands and face and sneezing.  The NYT is too expensive for me, but I work the crossword everyday.  Hope everyone enjoyed the rain and can make it back out to the track today to see Junior win (ha)!

Ginger, I think you've hit on a new occupation for yourself.

YOU could become that super-hero that travels to the Past and retrieves those best features from those times.

We have to come up with a super-hero name for you. One that combines your Deb experience and SOC heritage. Hey, how about "The Golden Retriever"?

The newspapers have gone the way of TV... Too much junk...Start thinking about it.  The public schools...have gone that way...Make a long list...I don't think we 'necessarily' need to return to the past.. We need to retrieve the good things from the past and carry them into the future.. We are evolving.. but who knows where it will...end..?
                 Hope it's a good week....

Didn't the National Enquirer out Tiger Woods as well as John Edwards?  Maybe they hire real journalists instead of writers who have an agenda.  Hmmmmm....

Kathleen talk about painting with a broad brush! I would not call the NY Times,Washington Post,LA Times,Detroit Free Press,Miami Herald conservative nor owned by Repubilicans! DMN is now a liberal paper now ,it was conservative at one time, but like the Houston Chronicle both are now supporters of liberal causes papers

Charlotte, I noticed that the Huffington Post recently added a Religion blog.  What could possibly go wrong???  One of many ironic events in news this year was the National Enquirer being nominated for a Pulitizer because they were the only news outlet to pursue the Edwards story.  Old media simply spiked the story, along with so many others.  I have no respect for reporters or newsroom editors who are not doing their jobs.  No wonder they are all drowning in red ink.  I prefer the internet for my news these days.

The DTH folded up a few years ago, leaving the News with no competition.  The News economized by firing many of their good writers, and subsequently lost subscribers and advertisers.  On Monday it looks about like Bear Tracks, but is usually less well done.

Charlotte, you paint newspapers with a pretty broad brush. I don't know of anyone who would call "the Dallas Morning News" a liberal rag. Most newspapers are owned by conservative Republicans.

I am not surprised that you take the Huffington Post, but is there anything factual in there these days?....What an idiot that woman is........she used to live here in Houston....she belongs in LA LA Land that is for sure.  The News Papers (if you want to call them that) have made themselves undesirable as far as I am concerned....their Liberal Only views and yesterday's news has made them obsolete for me.  The columnist I know who saw this coming are on there own or on the Net, have written books and so forth...Sorry about the jobs, but look at all the other "progress" that has replaced jobs throughout the centuries......can't help that.

We subscribe to two newspapers--the "Dallas Morning News" and the "New York Times." I also receive the "Huffington Post" online, although I seldom have time to read it. My husband likes to read a real paper and actually hold it in his hands. He says reading the newspaper on the Internet is not the same as holding and reading a newspaper in your hands. I wonder if he is a dying breed. I hope all of you continue to subscribe to your local newspaper because they keep a lot of people employed. Local newspapers are important to the communities they serve.

We were loyal subscribers first to the Times Herald, then to the Dallas Morning News, for 39+ years.  Every morning, the search for the paper extended from the porch to the front driveway, to the berm, flower beds, retaining wall, roof, and gutter next to the curb where it is very wet in inclement weather. The worse the weather, the further the DMN was from the door. Complaints about poor delivery and wet papers went nowhere, and the only contact with the carrier was a card in December to say how much he cared. We put the paper under the cat box after I did the NYT puzzle. Then they doubled or tripled their home delivery rate.  We stopped our subscription.  It took a month or so before they quit throwing it. We were fished into rejoining about six months ago.  The articles mostly came from the AP or were about Houston news (no offense, So. Tx. SOCites.) The "news" writers felt the need to salt opinions into the few local stories.  We quit again.  However, they won't stop throwing the thing.  Incredibly, it's now about two feet from the porch every day, and it's FREE. It's also highly absorbent, a nice feature if you have cats.

Charlotte, I like the Parade Magazine and Funnies..in the Commercial Appeal..They used to include the weekly TV Mag.and then they started charging so I have the TV Guide Mag.. now.. I occasionally pick up a paper on Sunday.. I did have the Sunday paper delivered for a year..but not now..
I'll probably get a paper tomorrow, just because I haven't had one in several weeks.. I like the comic strip, 'Get Fuzzy' and 'Zits'...best of all.. The cat in Get Fuzzy, is an evil cat... I know a 'few' people that still read the paper from cover to cover...They are a 'dying breed'..

Has anyone noticed how SMALL News Week is these days.  I picked this month's up in a doc's office last week and it felt like a leaflet...serves them right!  Yesssssssssssss!  Should I tell you how I feel about those "news" rags?  ha ha ha! The Internet is doing all the "news" rags in...thankfully.  I do not and have not taken a "news" paper in years........here in Houston the only thing worth seeing are the obits, weddings and articles about the Social Xrays giving parties for themselves in the name of charity.  OK, there are some other interesting articles. But, I can subscribe on line now and not have to kill a tree getting the "news" (which isn't news anymore because of the Net) delivered so that I can get black ink all over my hands and lap.

This is peak weekend for all the wildflowers in our area.........I am astounded at what I call "God's Quilt" as I drive out in the country and see the myriad of colors in the fields!  Such beauty!

By the way I noticed that on June 22nd a new TV show will air - titled Memphis Beat. A series about a Memphis cop who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator. I will be looking for you as one of the quirky extras in the background.

Ginger, You should be congratulated on all your voluntary endeavors. I am sure it keeps you young and active. It is good for people to be active and involved no matter what their age. The happiest people are the ones who help others. A quote of my mothers comes to mind: "AN IDLE MIND IS THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP."
