Saturday, is the fifty-first anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy. Some of you might want to go to Dealey Plaza at noon and observe the moment of silence.  This moment of silence was begun by Penn Jones several years ago and has been continued every year.  There is also a prayer and Beverly Oliver sometimes sings "Amazing Grace."

Duane, I had to go back to my 1962 yearbook to find your mug, and I clearly recall you. That was a pretty gutsy move to leave the cushy classrooms of SOC for the rigors of the Navy. If you are anywhere near Dallas you should consider attending the annual SOC Christmas Party on Dec. 7th. 'Bout time you caught up with some of the old faces.

Last year the ice storm prevented Dru and I from attending but we are game to give it another shot. Looking forward to visiting with everybody and hoping for dry weather next month.

Hello Duane,  You may remember me and my brother
Roe Burrow.  We lived down the street (on Kilburn) from you and your mother,  I am glad to learn that you  had such a good and productive life.  How is your sweet mother doing?

I too am a SOC alumni.
I quit school in my senior year, 1963 with two of my friends ( Tommy Ingram and Doyle Vickers) to join the Navy. I attended East Texas State University for 2 1/2 years before starting my career.
I am retired from the Kroger Co. where I spent 21 years as the Quality Manager of America's Beverage Co. In Irving Tx.
I have been wonderfully married to my wife Kathy for 36 years. We have one child, Kaleb who lives in Richland Hills Tx. with his wife Jean and their daughter Karsyn.
It was so saddening to see the names of so many of my departed schoolmates. I just wanted to interject that this old coot is alive and kicking, and I hope that there are many more out there!

It is hard to believe that two of my favorite high school teachers passed  away in the same week. (Ms. Hess and Mr. Eads).  I loved Mr. Eads.  He was so funny and a great Biology teacher.  He always made his students feel good.  I remember running into him when I worked part-time for Sanger Harris at Market Hall during the Christmas Holidays.  I felt so grown up seeing him working there too.

I also remember Benny. A quick story, Benny did well with the ladies, and one night he, John Loehr and myself were in a bar somewhere around McKinney Ave. I commented about how many ladies were in the bar and so few men, the ladies were dancing with each other not uncommon so Benny asked one to dance. She accepted but had a cut'in by another lady and in a very unfriendly fashion. Benny came back to the table, John and I figured it out, he said they were girlfriends real girlfriends! We got a lot of stares which I guess we didn't notice when we came in.We were in a lesbian bar I didn't know what they were in mid? 60s. We left with Benny convinced that with time he could turn the lady he was dancing with:-)I think we were all on fake Ids at the time

My dad was stationed in Mitchell, South Dakota where he meant and married my mother.  He was a Sergeant and in charge of several hundred men.  My father was always so modest that it was surprising that he held such an important position. He almost never spoke about his military experiences, although he was DAV.and has received several honors from the military.

Thanks to all of you who were in the military.  Your country appreciates you.
Did any of you see the military parade today?  It was the second largest parade in the country.

Thank you Veterans.  Lynell, I think Starbucks is giving a free cup of coffee to any veteran that stops by also.

My dad was in the Army and stationed in CA with orders to be shipped to Japan (after the surrender), but I was born early!!  My birth gave him enough points to stay home and be honorably discharged.  If I'd been born on mom's due date, my dad would have been in Japan for a year.  That's why I know he liked me best.  HA!

John, I remember Benny well.  I remember him working at a Safeway Store at one time and he was always very nice.  His brother Danny is still married to his Jr. High and High School Sweetheart Sharon Carmichael. We still stay in touch.  Danny's hair is snow white now, very distinguished.

Peaches, how did your garage sale go?  At least you had a good day for it.  My first husband and I had two garage sales and cleaned up on both.  Steve and I had one about 20 years ago and said never again.  It rained off and on so we had it at the back of the garage and driveway (we had intended to have a yard sale in front of the house).  We closed up around noon when Steve realized that way too many of the male shoppers were a lot more interested in all the tools in the garage that weren't for sale.  How is your mom doing?

Recently on Facebook I came across an old photo of Benny Hemphill and borrowed it to share with you guys. Benny was maybe the nicest guy in our old neighborhood and was a long-time friend until his sudden death in April 2001 at the all too early age of 55.

This photo is his family's 1964 Christmas pic. Some of you may recall his younger brother Danny ('65). During the summer of '64 Benny, Ray Fox, Eddie Crow ('62) and I all roomed together at the Red Lion Apartments - just down the block from Wee St. Andrews. None of us could afford college at that time. We worked low level jobs but had a blast living a life with few responsibilities and lots of impromptu parties.

But eventually all parties must end. Benny joined the Marines and earned a degree in Biology from North Texas State. Later enjoyed married life in the Palestine/Athens area til an unexpected heart problem ended his days.

If you have any small animals and live in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas, you need to keep a careful watch on them.  We have seen several coyotes in our neighborhood.  Several cats and a Chihuahua were taken.  Fortunately, for the Chihuahua he only held him in his mouth and then the owner got him to drop the little dog.  Now, anytime a coyote comes around the Chihuahua starts having a fit and warns everyone of the presence of a coyote.

John:

You have a flair for entertaining and a much better memory than I have.  I don't remember much about classes at SOC.  I remember Ms. Bryant for Algebra and Mr. Hedrick for Chemistry.   Ms. Bryant was living with her parents and rumor has it that her parent's house was "egged" one night by several (actually 3) in our class.  Rumor also has it that someone in our class got Mr. Headrick in an awkward situation.  If you remember, they were doing construction on the building our senior year and there were a couple of burly guys with a jackhammer outside just below our room.  I heard that someone wrote a note to the workers threatening physical harm is they did not stop the noise.  Mr. Hedrick was foolish enough to sign his name and put the room number on the note.  It was quite a scene when one of the burly guys showed up in our classroom.  Like I said, they were just rumors!

My Peggy Hess story:

I took sophomore English with Miss Hess and we did a study block on "Greek Mythology". Afterwards she gave us an assignment to write our own Greek Myth. In the class were my pals Larry Pool and Charles Woodard (whom some of you may recall). My hapless friends became the inspiration for my paper - "The Legend of Southestes".

At this point the details of my myth escape me but I do recall that Southestes was a great god who was served by two lesser gods ... the near-sighted "Poolia" and his dimwit henchman "Woodus". Somewhere in the tale Southestes shot an arrow through the darkness to slay a troublesome dragon and save the kingdom. Picture Superman without the cape.

Miss Hess got a kick out of the satirical myth which incorporated my classmates. She gave me an "A", then got me out of class to read my tale to two of her other classes. I enjoyed the brief moment in the limelight and most likely that class is where my particular style of "observation & comment" was launched.

Poolia went on to become a Professor and a Baptist Minister. Woodus became an engineer chasing petroleum around the globe; while I alone escaped to tell this tale (and paraphrase Moby Dick). For the encouragement, I thank you dear Miss Hess.

I am saddened to learn of one of my favorite teachers, Ms Peggy Hess-Hughes.  I took two years of French with her as my teacher and loved her dearly.  Did you know she took ballet in France?  She was an amazing woman, and after Robert graduated from college he came back and married Miss Hess.  Robert Hughes was a graduate of SOC 1965, loved her very dearly and they traveled all over the world together.  They were very private and their love was one of a kind!  She will be missed but never forgotten.  Amazing lady.
