Comments: I spent part of the day with Peaches yesterday. Got her to slow down long enough to have lunch and relax for at least a couple of hours. She has so much on her plate right now..working full time..moving her mother's things from her apartment and spending part of every day at the nursing home with her mother...and working on the reunion...she amazes me but I encouraged her to be sure she is taking care of herself. Such a giving and loving person...love you Peaches!!!!
Comments: Awwwwww, Doug. And Ginger can sing. I recognized the tune to the Meow Mix commercial.
Comments: Lynell and Ginger, you girls are the "cat's meow"
Comments: The Main Street of Steamboat...looks a lot like Silverton, Co... I think maybe the Utes should stage a 'sit-in' and take back the town..
Comments: Meiow, Meow, Meow, Meow...Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow......etc. etc.... ![]()
Comments: Never enough cat news, JS. Never enough.
Comments: Ginger, re: "Steamboat" - just Google it. Doug: That's enough "cat news". Some of us are trying to keep our lunch down.
Comments: But....does it have a Steamboat or has it ever had a Steamboat..? I lived where there were actually 'Steamboats'....and rode on them occasionally... I always enjoyed steamboat rides, except for the Field Trip we took with Kindergarteners.. It was the little girl that I had to constantly hold on to so...she wouldn't 'jump ship'. There was also that other Field Trip to the Bread Bakery and I had to hold her back so she wouldn't stick her head on the conveyor belt..! Oh, the memories... I still like Steamboats and I do relate them to 'The DEEP SOUTH'. That's why I asked... I've wondered 'why' the mountainous town in Colorado...was named Steamboat.. Mark Twain could probably write a funny story about that..! ![]()
Comments: Lynell is correct about the name..here is a little info: The name Steamboat Springs is certainly fitting for a town with over 150 mineral springs in the local area. Before the arrival of the first pioneer settlers, the Ute Indians made Steamboat their summer home. The Utes believed the local springs had the power to rejuvenate strength & spirit, and they often visited the springs after battles. Once the pioneer settlers arrived and word spread about the hot springs in Steamboat, trains began to bring visitors seeking the same power of the hot springs as the Utes. I have not visited ALL of the springs!!!
Comments: Lynell, On the subject of musical cats, our cat is orange with white markings. On his left side the markings look like "YO". So we named the cat "YO". Well, that did not take long to morph into "YO YO MEOW". And, by the way, my cat sends regards to all '63 SOCites. Isn't that purrfect ?
Comments: hello everyone, thanks for the info on Steamboat Springs. looks like I a started some thing with the request to Charlote. Im in Delta Pa. Visiting my sister until this next Wednesday. To all of you in Texas it was 60 degressmost of the day.im having to wear a hoodie to keep warm.,Keep, cool everyone!
Comments: Doug, my husband finds your comment about my "always" being right downright hilarious. Ginger, I goggled it and somebody thought a spring made a sound like a steamboat. I think my cat sounds like Pavoratti, especially at five o'clock in the morning. Maybe we should change his name.
Comments: Why is it called Steamboat..?? I've lived in two towns in the South on rivers...Mississippi and the Cumberland. Also visited New Orleans more than once.. They have Steamboats there.. But why is a town in Colorado called Steamboat..?
Comments: Oh yes, I didn't mention Rabbit Ears. The coolest sign ever!!! There is a rock formation near Steamboat that is named Rabbit Ears Pass ....Thus the name of the motel. Not sure about staying there, but it is right downtown.
Comments: Lynell, As usual, you are correct. On the other hand, one could say it is neither ear nor there. Or would it be neither hare nor there ?
Comments: Thanks, Doug. Was I right, or what?

Comments: But the Rabbit Ears Motel has the coolest neon sign.
Comments: Gosh, I don't know where you should stay. The Hampton Inn is good here....I don't know how much you want to spend on a room. There are many good restaurants. Harwigs is good...Mambo Italiano is good for casual Italian, Creek Side or The Shack for breakfast. Sweetwater is on the river. Freshies is good for breakfast or lunch. Saketumi is great for sushi. Cafe Diva is upscale wonderful$$$$$. . EVERYTHING is casual...this is Steamboat. I won't be here in October and will miss most of the fall color. Boooo!!!
Comments: Charlotte, Im in Colorado in October.I have never been to Steamboat Springs.Have you any recommendations on where to stay, eat,or play? I will be driving over from Estes Park for a day or two. Thanks
Comments: Sharon, I'm sure it has changed. But, it is still very beautiful And most important, cool!!!!!!!!
Comments: Charlotte, I am glad you aren't in harms way. I've been through Steamboat Springs many, many years ago. It was really beautiful back then and I hope it hasn't changed too much. I'll bet you are enjoying every second of the lovely, cool weather!
Comments: No, i am in Steamboat Springs. Boulder is South east of me and north west of Denver. We NEED rain. But not all at once. Sigh!
Comments: Charlotte, I just saw the news about the floods in Boulder, CO and am hoping that you are not there. Years ago, when Randy and I went camping in CO every summer, there were a few times that we had to move our campsite in a hurry when the river started rising after a heavy downpour. Very scary.
Comments: Sharon, I made a typo on the date. We selected the colors for 2309 Richland in Garland in late '72 and watched our house being built. We paid $25,950 for a three bedroom, two bath, and we absolutely loved living there for seven years. Had great neighbors, some of whom are still there. We were concerned about whether the $219 payments would kill us! I wish young people now could get a good house reasonably priced! Mike Mahaffey was really nice to us.
Comments: Lynell, Mahaffey did build a good home. Mike's father started the company sometime in the '50's and Mike took it over in the 70's. He really cared about the product the company produced and constantly went to the job sites. A couple of the ladies I worked with back then bought Mahaffey homes and they are still in them! Mike is a Garland product and I still run into him occasionally. My brother said he is usually at all the Garland HS football games.
Comments: Sharon, our first house was a Mahaffey Home in Garland. It was well built and had some very nice features. We went to a model home and picked out a few of the things before it was built. They offered several different colors of shag carpet. That was late '74. We chose citrus colors throughout. I think you would have been an excellent Cowboys cheerleader!
Comments: Oh, Charlotte, you are a hoot! I doubt at the old age of 27, I would have fit the image they were looking for. I understand that there are older women on the squad now. In 1982, I worked for Mike Mahaffey, one of the largest home builders in the Dallas area, and the wife of one of our superintendents, I believe she was 23, tried out and made it. She performed at her first game and quit. Said she couldn't handle the pressure! I have to say, when looking at some of the other NFL cheerleading outfits, what was thought to be risque in 1972 is now probably the most modest one out there.

Comments: John, thanks for the picture with our dear Mary. There was actually an article in yesterday's Morning News about the male cheerleaders. I think the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders as we know them today started in 1972 when Texas Stadium opened. I was Secretary to the Athletic Director at that time, and I remember being in the office of the Sports Information Director, Fred Graham, when Bert Rose called. If you remember, Bert Rose, Gil Brandt and Tex Schram ran everything for Clint Murchison. Anyway, Fred took the call and when he was finished, he said they want to spread the word to all the college campus newspapers that tryouts were going to be held for an all-new cheerleading squad to go to Texas Stadium. I remember expressing my concern because the tryouts were to be held a week later and I didn't think they would have time to get that many girls to try out. I really don't think they had that many come out for the first year, but I guess after seeing them on national TV, it's been overwhelming. |
