Comments: I didn’t realize Zumwalt was renamed. I remember the ceremony in the school auditorium when Zumwalt family was introduced. What a travesty to the family
Comments: sorry to but in again, just read where Marty Smith’s brother, Sammy Smith, class of 66, passed away yesterday. Sympathy sent to Marty in the loss of his brother and to Sammy Smiths family and class of 1966 for their loss.
Comments: Ken, Gary‘s letter jacket, all four of his letters for football, baseball, track and basketball are in a frame at the school. We gave them to the school along with a large photo of the football team since it was the first year graduation from the school. We had lunch with the principal and coaches And some of the football players there. So all of that and Robert Pettit jacket are in the trophy cases for school history. It was a fun experience.
Comments: Well, I guess my Zumwalt letter jacket will join my Lisbon Elementary School letter sweater in the gone but not forgotten historical junk pile ![]() ![]()
Comments: Did any of you Zumwalt kids notice that the school has been renamed the Dr. Frederick Douglass Todd Sr. Middle School?
Comments: Spring in Upstate NY. Last Wednesday it was 81 here; tonight's forecast is 25 with snow. An I thouight Texas weather was weird.
Comments: P.S. Ken Bosko Haas, I know you and Gaye Nell Crockett were both Volga boatpersons, so be sure to check out the link I posted Sharon, do you work near me?
Comments: Sharon, thank you very much! Our teeny backyard is all flower beds, pool and deck. We like our faux fake pretend grass out front, and it’s nice not to have to replace sod. Also David doesn’t have to do nearly as much lawn work. Stop in sometime! We’d love to see you.
Comments: Lynell: I have driven by your house several times lately on my way to work and wondered if your backyard is astroturf also. The front looks really nice.
Comments: Mike, what a relief to know your NY trees don’t have green buts. Yuk yuk. Spring seems to have sprung here in Big D! Summer can’t be far behind.
Comments: Fat fingers on the last message; meant to spell bud but, well, you see I messed up. BTW, Thanks Lynell for your help on my previous request.
Comments: Winter gave us its last shot. Sixteen degrees in Albany NY last night but forecast for later this week is 65. No green buts on any bushes or trees yet. Soon. Be safe everyone.
Comments: Peaches asked me to give everyone an update on her hip replacement surgery yesterday. All good! The surgery was a success, and she is doing great. Her doctor came by at 7am this morning and wants to keep her one more day, no problem, it just gives her a full day of recovery and therapy. She says she slept great last night (pretty sure the 6 or 7 pills they gave her had something to do with that). She walked after the doctor came by, climbed up and down five stairs, ate breakfast and got cleaned up. She really likes the hospital, describes it "like having a 4 star hotel with service throughout the day...good food, good coffee, soft wash clothes and towels, nice sheets, great nurses and techs, etc". Sounds like they might have to push her out the door! She said thanks to all those praying for her.
Comments: Michael, I hope you’re around for a good long time! Please give your son my email address because I keep up with this site and the Memoriam page. lynellgsmith@sbcglobal.net.
Spring has sprung in Texas! I see a fat Robin on the garage roof and a green tinge to trees behind us.
Comments: Please don't think this is out of line. I'd like to have contact information for someone in the SOC Class of 63 to provide to one of my daughters/sons to advise you IF I pass. I'm not sick but have had four stents so one never knows. I'd like to make my classmates aware if something happens. Perhaps a good email address or phone number. Please send via my email address, peterssloan@gmail.com. Thanks all. Mike
Comments: Peaches called today to say the info about Glen was on her Facebook page. I just cut and pasted the link.
Comments: Thank you for posting this Lynell. Those of us not on Facebook don’t get to see this information.
Comments: ![]() Glen Byron Starnes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend entered the gates of Heaven on March 3, 2022 at the age of 76. Glen shared his final breaths surrounded in love with his wife Kathryn and his daughters, Robin and Amy, by his side after boldly battling several months of illness with lung and heart issues. Glen was born August 21, 1945, at Methodist Hospital Dallas, TX. He was the 4th of 6 children, and the first one to be born in a hospital. He graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, TX where he enjoyed some of the happiest times of his life playing football for the Golden Bears. Glen proudly served four years in the United States Air Force from 1969-1972 and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He continued his education at Texas A&M Commerce where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology. Glen was always finding ways to nurture others and was authorized and licensed in the State of Texas as a Professional Counselor – maintaining his active license every year since 1983. Glen was born with a very special God given spirit that prevailed with him throughout his life. He read the entire Bible straight through 33 times – finishing the most recent reading on his great grandson Gentry’s first birthday in January 2021. Glen always said, “you need to know the textbook when you get to heaven”. He loved the Lord fiercely. His faith was integral as the center-point of his life, and he was devoted to enriching the spiritual lives of his family. Glen’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with Kathryn, his “sweet angel” and beloved wife of over 38 years. They spent a great deal of time immersing themselves in the great outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping across the great state of Texas and throughout the Southwest. Their shared love for nature led to creating their very own backyard sanctuary earning the designation of a “certified wildlife habitat” where they enjoyed countless hours sipping vino, smoking briskets, and cherishing each other’s conversations. One of Glen’s utmost sources of joy came from his role as “Daddy” to his two daughters, Robin Brown and Amy Starnes. He is described by his “girls” as their steadfast protector, source of comfort, and forever their safe place to fall. His example of love, strength, and devotion shaped his girl’s ability to extend the same type of comfort to their Daddy in his final days, when he needed it most. Glen is survived by an adoring family including his wife Kathryn of Garland, TX; Daughters - Robin Brown and husband Matt Brown of Mckinney, TX and Amy Starnes of Mead, CO; Stepsons – Troy Prestenberg and wife Kim of Garland, TX and Matt Prestenberg and wife Cara of Sachse, TX; Grandsons - Chase Sasiain of Dallas, TX and Trevor Stacy and wife Shelby and great grandson Gentry of Rayne, LA; Michael, Johnathon, David and Joshua Prestenberg of Garland, TX; Granddaughters - Skyler Rountree of Plano, TX; Lani Stacy of Austin, TX; Scarlett, Stella, and Sophia Prestenberg of Sachse, TX. Brothers – Walter “Buddy” Starnes and wife Delores of Tyler, TX, Curtis Ray Starnes and wife Nancy of Rockwall, TX, Clifton Starnes and wife Diane of Farmers Branch, TX; sister - Patty Healey and husband Alan of Hideaway Lake, TX; along with a long host of other loving family and friends. Glen is preceded in death by his parents Evelyn and Walter Arther Starnes and his older sister Elaine Day and her husband Ben Day. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2022 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior at the funeral home. Following the service, a lunch reception for friends and family will be held at Tucker Hill Community Clubhouse, 2100 State Boulevard McKinney, Texas 75071. A private family interment will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Glen’s honor to the First Baptist Church Dallas, 1707 San Jacinto Street Dallas, TX 75201
Comments: We lost another member of the Class of ‘63 today. Glen Starnes’ daughter Amy called Peaches to say that Glen passed away today after being ill for a few months. I will be sure to post about services if I learn of any.
Comments: OK…not bread …BREAK!
Comments: I know you Texans have been brrr cold lately. I’ve been in Orlando, FL for my husbands 60th high school reunion and got a very nice bread from the cold.
Comments: Like others I am saddened by the passing of any member of the SOC Class of 1963. If my counting is accurate, we have lost over 25% of our graduating class. It may be higher than that because there are still quite a few that we have lost track of. I first met Celi when my family moved from an unincorporated area of Dallas County to a home just behind Clinton P. Russell school. That was 1953 and we were entering the 3rd grade. I (as will so many of you) will always remember Rodger for Motorcyclegate on Senior Day in 1963. But in the past decades I will also remember his grin, and his answer to the question, "Rodger, how are you?" His response was always the same. "I AM BLESSED." |
