It’s no surprise to learn Carlos had such a lovely mom. May they both rest in peace, and may their memories be a blessing to all who knew them.

It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of
George Frayne.....better known to you as Commander Cody.
He, along with his band the Lost Planet Airmen, sang such classic rock hits as Hot Rod Lincoln and Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (that cigarette). Who could ever forget the classic lyrics:
"Tell St Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette"
[crazy]

Our friend Jana (Mrs. Milo) Milham has written a very interesting and informative book. It’s her true story, sometimes tearful, other parts hysterically funny. This is what she has to say about it:

20210916_044035_resized.jpg

FINDING MY WAY explains the disease known as acromegaly from the patient's point of view; I am that patient.

My acromegaly was caused by a pituitary tumor that was finally discovered by the physicians at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in 1970.  Since the pituitary is the master gland, there is nothing in the human body not affected by this disease.

The book describes my pain and discomfort, as well as the care that I received from the physicians at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center and the Metabolic Center at the University of California in San Francisco.

The publisher is sending a copy of my book to every medical school library (Private/Public) in the United States and Canada.  Additionally, he is sending several hundred copies to Oklahoma High Schools.

The book can be purchased by contacting me   j.milham12@gmail.com for a check, cash, or money order exchange..
The price is $20.00 + $2.00 shipping.

I have just spent maybe the most enjoyable 30 minutes (or so) reading again the stories we have in the Guest Columns section. The post from Charlotte led me to this.

I had not looked at that section in quite a few years, but I found myself lost there as I began to read, not just the post about Mary Gene, but EVERY post there.

What I discovered was, not only a treasure trove of reminders about our "growing up" years, but so many names of our classmates that have left us way too early. Some are folks that I have known since I moved to Dallas just before the start of the 3rd grade at Clinton P. Russell.

Mary Gene Florence, Danny Green, Benny Hemphill, Wanda Scroggins Liford, Barney Kemp, Jerry Vessels, Ginger Hearn, Roddy Schoenfeldt, Mary McCord and Beverly Duvall Haas (officially from the class of '65, but well connected to us.) I hope I didn't forget anyone.

They are no longer here physically, but a flood of great memories because of that 30 minutes will keep me smiling for hours.

Charlotte, Mary Gene was smart! And she was a nice girl. Her funeral was beautifully done, and the speaker was her minister son. A life well lived.

Belated happy birthday wishes to Patricia!

Lynell, I just read the guest column about Mary Gene Florence. It brought back so many fond  memories. Thank you Jim Stegall for writing it. Mary Gene and I attended Cliff Temple together. Our mothers were both very involved in our church. We both were in the choir there and in Sunday school together. Oh, and also GA’s. She was much smarter than I, but somehow we remained friends until graduation sent us in different directions. I, too, was saddened at her death, but my sweet memories of her live on.

Sharon, I did not know about Tom T. Hall. He was one of the greats.

I know people in their nineties who’ve said the worst part is not the physical aches and pains. It’s the losses.

Let‘s all make our strongest effort to hang in here.

I, too, was saddened to learn of the passing of Don Everly last week.  And, at the same time, Tom T. Hall.  What a great song writer/story teller.

It’s been a hard week. Don Everly and Charlie Watts were gifted musicians who brought so much to my life. I felt like I knew them. Then the Afghanistan nightmare began to unfold. On a personal level, we lost our beloved fur baby Beau to a mysterious neuromuscular disease. Hard week, indeed.

I realize how lucky I am. I have a great husband, a house full of my treasures, two precious cats, most of my health, and many dear friends. Thank you all for being part of me.

Then for some reason this link popped up on my screen. I had not read this in a long time. http://soc63.com/guestcolumns.html

I had always liked the Everly Brothers from their first hit (Bye Bye Love) in the 50s thru all the other big hits into the mid 60s.

I got to see them live one time, but that was in Australia when I was on R&R from Vietnam. Their popularity in the US of A had dropped off but they were wildly popular in the Land Down Under during the mid to late 60s. They were appearing at a supper club in Sydney. I went with a guy I had met on the plane full of wild and crazy soldiers. He had been there before and set us up with dates with this girl he had met before and one of her friends.

I think my date got irritated with me because I seemed to enjoy Don and Phil more than her company. She learned later that wasn't the case at all. Of course, this was after the Everly Brothers were not a factor.

Every morning before I start my daily walk, I put on my earbuds, tune in Pandora on my phone, and listen to Golden Oldies Radio while I'm walking - hits from the 50s and 60s. Occasionally I get odd looks from fellow walkers..and I realize I was probably singing out loud. During this time there is one song that I hear literally every day, might be my favorite song of all time...All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers. Don't know why, but the death of Don Everly this past weekend really got to me. Silly, but I've been sad all week.

Dan, we support our local VFDs In Austin County. They are so important to ranchers.

Bill, you are so fortunate to still have your aunt to visit. All of my aunts and uncle are gone now including my parents. I wish I had asked the questions of them that I now have.

1. I Was in Ouray Colorado several years ago.Went outside one morning to a haze and smell of smoke.I asked owner of trailer park where were the fires in Colorado. She corrected me and said when there are fires in California we get smoke in Colorado. I imagine its like a west Texas dust storm blowing into east Texas.
2. We had a massive fire behind us coming out of Yellowstone national park.We arrived in Cody wy with the reddest sky Ive ever seen.
3. HAD A GRASS FIRE ON THE HWY AND FRONT OF MY RANCH SEVERALYEARS AGO.bY THE TIME i got home from Paris,tx 4 different community fire trucks were putting it out.I gave my community fire house a 200 dollar donation and aĺl the water bottles I had at the fire.

I just looked on line and saw some for sale on Vanette Lane…my street. It’s interesting and sad to look back at what has happened to some of our neighborhoods.  It seems some of our houses are being bought for renovation and resale.

ANONYMOUS?????  Supposed to be. 😈  Thanks a lot for disclosing that. Haaaaaaa!

I'm in the mountains of western Colorado and we are covered in smoke from the Pacific northwest. The air is very unhealthy. The alert we have here says to stay in. But, since I have to walk my very spoiled dog, it is impossible for me to just stay in. But, at least I’m not out there running or biking like so many are.
