Comments: I heard from John Southworth yesterday and he asked if I had heard about Larry Pool. Larry had been pastor at Calvary Baptist Church for 19 years and was dismissed for sending letters to the editor of the Dallas Morning News. Don’t know any details

Comments: Mr Gibbs, I hate to be a contrarian but I have to question the sincerity of your "decided to try ROTC" story. The smoking gun, so to speak, is located on page 233 of The Den 1961. The entire page is devoted to the Rifle Club...all young women including one Miss Katie Maureen Knight. I feel sure this was your true motivation for thinking ROTC/rifle range. My only regret is that I was oblivious to this fine organization. As far as missed time goofing off with Ken, that activity was way overrated. I'm sure your Arizona cousin would agree with that fact.
Comments: Ken, it’s funny you should mention that. My best friend in grade school and junior high was Don Chapman. We rode motor scooters together, hunted and fished together, played football together and just generally hung out together. We only lived a block apart. We went to two a days at SOC before our Sophomore year. After the first workout, Don was really worried. “I’m gonna die”. Don only weighed 130# and the first guy to hit him was Malcolm Walker. Well, two of Don’s other friends were juniors and were in ROTC. One of them was on the rifle team. The thought of spending time on the range sounded a lot more appealing than study hall. Besides, Larry Pool was not playing football and he was the only guy at Zumwalt that was slower than I was. So, I decided to try ROTC and Don immediately moved to Houston. I have always regretted that decision and realize that I missed out on the goofing off with Ken.

Comments: Hmmm....porn? I'm not familiar with that word. What does it mean? Maybe some of the smarter people, the ones like Leftnell and Barry who didn't realize that high school was for sports, dating, and goofing off, and who actually studied and made good grades, maybe they can enlighten the rest of us as to the definition of that word. If it's bad, then I assume it must refer to someone who went to Sunset...or Adamson...or Kimball. Ugh, I should have paid more attention in class.

Comments: Just like Dancing, we had planned several trips this year. We visited my cousin, Suzanne Darnell Moore, in Sedona last year and wanted to go back this year, but getting older and then the COVID-19 and we’ll see about next year. First the knee replacement, then two mini strokes, then hernia surgery, then a Pacemaker and now another hernia. I was scheduled to have the hernia repaired two weeks ago. Went to pre-op on Weds and then went for the surgery on Fri. The surgeon was scrubbing in when the anestgeologist decided that he wouldn’t put me to sleep until the heart problem is sorted. Going for a sleep study on Fri. And to make it worse, we have only been fishing once during all this! Maybe some prayers would help.
Comments: I don't remember any Chinese students in the Class of '65, but the link to their website does. I did take 2 courses of Chinese but I can't read it - maybe it's the fight song?

Comments: Bill, it’s so nice to see you here! My husband and I still live in our beloved Dallas. We have happily been incarcerated for months except emergency runs for provision. Glad y‘all are safe and healthy. Our generation has seen some times, haven’t we?
Comments: Love your question, is this a painting or a guest page. Think I got that right. Seldom, once, commented on this site but check it every other week or so to see how folks are doing. We have lost a lot of classmates over the years, many way before their time but them we don't get to pick our time in most case. Wife and I sort of kinda maybe followed the rules during shut down. When you live in a town of 98 people it is not hard to social distance. We made it, so far, and hope everyone came through this with no lasting damage.

Comments: Sharon, Sorry to hear about your mom and the sad events surrounding her passing. From your past comments, I know she must have been a very special lady. Praying for you and your family. I know what you mean about the old neighborhood. Through the years I've continued to drive around that area and the decline has been very sad to watch. Funny though, the good memories of those times and places remain clear in my mind. In fact, Beverly used to marvel at how I could remember things from SOC but couldn't remember what happened when I was 30,40, or 50. I kinda felt bad about that until Ralph Fincher told me he suffered from the same phenomenon. As a joke, I would take pictures of familiar landmarks from the old days: schools, theaters, hangouts, Glendale Shopping Center, Fernwood Baptist Church, etc. I would then text them to Bev with no caption...just the picture. Her response was always the same, "You are going to die". Times have certainly changed.

Comments: First time on our '63 Site in several years. Saddened by those that have departed. Most don't remember me as I departed SOC in January '63 to Hurst but I'll always be a SOCite regardless of where I physically lived in May 63.
Comments: Forgot to add that when I left Laurel Land yesterday, decided to drive down Marsalis and see SOC. First, passed Five Mile Creek and it looked like a desert, no water and weeds 5 feet tall. Don't know the problem there. Then to SOC, it really is something to see. But my first reaction was, who in the hell thought it a good idea to put up this super-ultra modern building in this urban blight. The neighborhood is atrocious. Driving done memory lane was sad.
Comments: Hi. I haven't posted here recently and am so sad to see that we've lost two more classmates. My 101-year-old mother passed away on Monday, April 27. I was unable to see her for last 6 weeks because of the nursing home lockdown. The nursing home did not have any virus patients and she died in her sleep. Sweet, precious woman. We are not having any services at this time due to the conditions and restrictions, and it makes me sad. But, all my family and extended family are huggers and kissers, so just would not do to have a service. I have returned to work on a very limited basis. I am working a couple of days a week for a half a day, just to keep up with the bills, etc. I work in a 9-story building and there are no other people on my floor at this time. I counted 30 cars in the parking lot and garage. Stay safe.
