Comments: It is just so hard to lose friends. Life shouldn't work like this.
Comments: I received word from Bill Akins that the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) will be participating in Dewaine Walker's burial at the DFW National Cemetery tomorrow. Bill and B. J. Field give graciously of their time to be a part of the PGR and honor our veterans. Here is a link to the PGR Calendar entry for SGT. Walter Dewaine Walker: http://www.pgrtexas.org/North%20Texas/2014/May/May-08-Walker.htm
Comments: Ronny, you guys were so darlin. LOVE the socks with the shorts (or swimsuits). I'm sorry for your loss of your good friend Dewaine. Sadly, Our loses seem to be too frequent these days.
Comments: I was very proud of my husband Bill because last week he was honored at the Park Cities Club. He is retiring May 31, after 41 years of teaching at SMU. I guess you could call the occasion "bittersweet." I felt sad that he was leaving a career that at times has given him so much satisfaction. I just hope he enjoys his retirement.
Comments: Ronny, I was thinking about the old days and recalled that the year after you bought that boat you and I found ourselves signing up in the same National Guard unit and awaiting Basic Training somewhere with the Army. We spent the next 6 years attending monthly meetings at the armory on California Crossing & Luna Road along with half a dozen players from the Dallas Cowboys. Today Ronny sent me the following pic taken just last year. From left to right are David Jones (SOC '62), Ronny Jarman, Eddie Bruner, and Dewaine Walker (all SOC '63). The occassion was the funeral of Ronny's former spouse Kathy Buster (SOC '65). Dewaine died of a heart attack.

Thanks again for posting that picture, I have been looking for it forever.
Comments: Ronny, that is bad news indeed, to learn of Dewaine's recent death. Last time I saw him was around the Fall of 2000. Your friendship with him goes back a long ways. In 1964 it looked like you guys had the World by the tail (Walker-left; Jarman-right). http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/walker-jarman1964.jpg

Comments: I'm still about 19 inside my head. Sadly, the rest of me is closing in on 70.
Comments: Well, Kathleen, I suppose the silence is your answer. :-) I think we have all gotten busy and it is hard to pin us down now. I guess we will wait for the 70th bday party now. I'm kind of in shock that I can even say that...70???????? Whoa!!!!!
Comments: John, you, Charlotte and Jud, put on such a wonderful party for SOCITES in Houston. Maybe, you guys might want to do it again. I met Donna Franklin and I really enjoyed my conversation with her.
Comments: Ah, John, "any kind" must possess the curiosity and TIME to find that wisdom. Inquiring minds and all that ya know. Some "kind" still work too. Ahem.....
Comments: And here I was thinking that the Internet was the repository for all of Mankind's ignorance, unfounded rumors and crazy conspiracy theories; oh wait, that is what passes for "Mankind's" -- as opposed to "Womenkind's" -- wisdom! Although even I have to admit that there is much value in being able to watch just about any television show or movie or video showing how to do just about anything in the World, and in being able to buy or sell almost everything imaginable.
Comments: Ah, Peaches, as I may have stated in the past ... The Almighty Internet is the holder and keeper of all of Mankind's wisdom. And if womankind ever gets any wisdom, it will someday be on there, too.
Comments: John, you know EVERYBODY and know SOMETHING about them also. giggle giggle
Comments: Well, I am sorry to learn of the death of Jimmy Franklin. I first met Jimmy and Jerry in my early teens at Fernwood Baptist Church. I didn't meet their little sister Kay until many years later when she attended our SOC party at Tortuga's Cantina in The Woodlands (2006?). To my surprise Kay lived only one block away from me. She had married beneath herself (an Adamson boy - ha) and was looking forward to retiring from her job at the Univ. of Houston - Downtown campus. In late 2011 Kay and Don sold their Woodlands home and settled elsewhere.
Comments: That's Jimmy Don not Jummy, darn auto correct!
Comments: Did not know if some of you had known Jummy Don Franklin class of 62 had passed away from cancer on April 11th. Services were pending at the Midlothian Funeral Home. His sister is Kay Franklin-Thomas from 65. His mother was a den mother during early years for some of the boys from this class including Gary and possibly Johnny Maddox. The Franklin family were great people. JS I think you met Kay in the Houston area back in the day.
Comments: JS, I regret that I never had Ms C as a teacher. I wonder if the tragedy in her life at that time was the death of a husband. I knew she encouraged girls to know how to support ourselves. That was very progressive for those days when we girls were told to learn how to cook and sew and always look pretty. She was a wise woman. Seems like Mr. Sontag said the same thing. Gosh, we were the recipients of incredible teachers. Thank you, DISD taxpayers.
Comments: Sharon, my tale of EC's past germinated over on Facebook when her granddaughter showed up in the Oak Cliff Boomers group and asked if any SOC people remembered her grandmother? Of course, many did. This set off my curiosity leading to some deep internet searches, old Dallas Morning News stories, and some email exchanges with Linda (the granddaughter) to document the winding trail. As a bonus here is a pic of Elinor (Pantermuehl at that point) taken in 1921. She was 15. http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/elp_1921-age15.jpg And you mentioned her reference to finishing college. This pic is from a 1925 SMU yearbook. Elinor is a junior and is top row, 2nd from left. http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/elp_1925_smu_jr_yr.jpg Howard Wade, her first husband, also went to SMU. He was on the 1924 football team which was the first SMU team to go undefeated for the 18 game season but they lost the Dixie Classic bowl game. It appears Elinor was twice Unlucky in Love.
Comments: I agree that Ms. Criswell was an excellent teacher. I've been the victim of 21 years of formal education and still believe that typing was the most valuable course of all. It sounds like all of that involving her son happened in 1977, after we had all moved on.
Comments: I forgot to add that after her husband died, Ms. Criswell went to college for her teaching degree so she could support her son. Really tough lady.
Comments: I adored Ms. Criswell. Best business office skills teacher I ever had, including college. I do remember that she remarked one day that I believe her first husband died suddenly. What a story. Thanks, John. |
