Well, I am sorry to learn of the death of Jimmy Franklin. I first met Jimmy and Jerry in my early teens at Fernwood Baptist Church. I didn't meet their little sister Kay until many years later when she attended our SOC party at Tortuga's Cantina in The Woodlands (2006?). To my surprise Kay lived only one block away from me. She had married beneath herself (an Adamson boy - ha) and was looking forward to retiring from her job at the Univ. of Houston - Downtown campus. In late 2011 Kay and Don sold their Woodlands home and settled elsewhere.

Did not know if some of you had known Jummy Don Franklin class of 62 had passed away from cancer on April 11th. Services were pending at the Midlothian Funeral Home. His sister is Kay Franklin-Thomas from 65. His mother was a den mother during early years for some of the boys from this class including Gary and possibly Johnny Maddox. The Franklin family were great people. JS I think you met Kay in the Houston area back in the day.

JS, I regret that I never had Ms C as a teacher. I wonder if the tragedy in her life at that time was the death of a husband. I knew she encouraged girls to know how to support ourselves. That was very progressive for those days when we girls were told to learn how to cook and sew and always look pretty. She was a wise woman.
Seems like Mr. Sontag said the same thing. Gosh, we were the recipients of incredible teachers. Thank you, DISD taxpayers.

Sharon, my tale of EC's past germinated over on Facebook when her granddaughter showed up in the Oak Cliff Boomers group and asked if any SOC people remembered her grandmother? Of course, many did.

This set off my curiosity leading to some deep internet searches, old Dallas Morning News stories, and some email exchanges with Linda (the granddaughter) to document the winding trail.

As a bonus here is a pic of Elinor (Pantermuehl at that point) taken in 1921. She was 15.

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/elp_1921-age15.jpg

And you mentioned her reference to finishing college. This pic is from a 1925 SMU yearbook. Elinor is a junior and is top row, 2nd from left.

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/elp_1925_smu_jr_yr.jpg

Howard Wade, her first husband, also went to SMU. He was on the 1924 football team which was the first SMU team to go undefeated for the 18 game season but they lost the Dixie Classic bowl game.

It appears Elinor was twice Unlucky in Love.

I agree that Ms. Criswell was an excellent teacher.  I've been the victim of 21 years of formal education and still believe that typing was the most valuable course of all.  It sounds like all of that involving her son happened in 1977, after we had all moved on.

I forgot to add that after her husband died, Ms. Criswell went to college for her teaching degree so she could support her son.  Really tough lady.

I adored Ms. Criswell.  Best business office skills teacher I ever had, including college.  I do remember that she remarked one day that I believe her first husband died suddenly.  What a story.  Thanks, John.

I can assure you that John has been around forever.  Heck, when I was just a youngster, John was already making himself a name around several campuses.  The stories I could tell!

Wow, John. What a story. I knew Ms. Criswell had suffered a tragedy in the past, but I didn't know the circumstances. This gives me even more respect for her, to think she could have survived such an event and been such a successful influence over so many.

I moved to Houston in 1976. In 1977 a murder story developed there. Louis Wade (age 51), a former Air Force Officer, was shot 5 times by his soon-to-be ex-wife, her son, and another Houston fireman. Just recently I learned the tragic event had an eerie Oak Cliff connection. Bear with me as the tale unfolds.

If we turn back the clock to 1943 we find young Louis as a senior in Oak Cliff at Sunset High. In the pic below, Louis is standing 2nd row at the left and Bobby Folsom is at the far right. Who could have predicted that in 1977 Louis would lose his life and "Robert" Folsom would be elected Mayor of Dallas?

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/wade1943.jpg

Back to 1943 at Sunset High ... Louis is under the watchful eye of Ben A. Matthews (ROTC Commandant) and his own grandfather R.C. Pantermuehl, Sunset's highly regarded Physics & Science teacher. We are in the midst of World War II and Superintendent W.T. White approaches Pantermuehl and directs him to develop a class in Aircraft Aeronautics to be taught city-wide to junior and senior boys as potential pre-training for the war effort.

R.C. Pantermuehl and his wife Lononie married in 1904 and in 1906 had a daughter. She married in 1925 and again in 1942. Louis Wade is her son from her 1925 marriage to Howard Wade. The daughter is an important piece of this puzzle. In August of 1951 her 2nd husband (Willard, a mechanic) died from gunshots to the abdomen - fired by his own uncle, one R.H. Townsend of Waco.

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/wtc-1942_age36.jpg

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/wtc_08-25-1951.jpg

In 1951 Pantermuehl's friend and former co-worker, Ben Matthews, was in place as Principal at Boude Storey Jr. High. Matthews hired Pantermuehl's daughter to teach there. Did their old friendship play a part in her getting hired? I don't know. But I do know that when Pantermuehl died in 1955, Ben Matthews was right there as one of his pallbearers.

When SOC High opened in 1952, Matthews earned the Principal's job and took Pantermuehl's daughter with him as part of the original faculty. She, Elinor Criswell, would teach at SOC until her retirement in 1971. When the murderers of Elinor's son (Louis Wade) were convicted in Houston she was too devastated by the loss of her only son to attend the trials.

Ms. Criswell spent her last few years living with her granddaughter Linda (one of Louis's four children). Elinor passed away in 1988 at age 82 having had an influence on the minds and futures of many Oak Cliff kids.

Spent a quiet evening last night.  There was a power outage yesterday afternoon and when it came back on, the TV had video but no audio.  Tried everything.  Finally called Geek Squad (TV is only 10 months old).  They'll be out in a week!  Brought the old, old TV in from the bedroom, got it hooked up and the cable broke off in it.  So we watched the Women's Final Four and the Mavs without sound.  Really kind of fun.  As Steve says, when we're watching sports, he doesn't need sound because I give him the play by play!  But I don't know if we can go a entire week without sound.

Charlotte, I don't yet have my MMM tickets, but he tweeted me last night to "... pick up your Complimentary Tickets at the Will Call window". He pulled that same stunt on me last December at Bass Hall. Made that long trip to Fort Worth only to be embarrassed at the ticket window. Does he think I'll fall for it twice?

Danny G., my formative 8th Grade year was spent at Zumwalt so I missed your favorite teacher. Hope all goes smoothly with your upcoming med visits.

She was always the biggest football fan whether it was high school, college or professional.  She and my dad (Doyce Wright) attended lots of SOC games and were special friends of the Poston family.  I am trying to reach Cindi and Marla Poston to let them know.  I had an old email address, but I have not gotten a response.

Kathleen, I am so glad you doing well with the treatment at home. You are still being prayed for.

Charlotte, I will give my mother your love. She spells her name with one l Loraine (everyone wants to put 2 l, guess that is the common way to spell it) . I left you a message Saturday night.  It has been too long since we talked. I love your pictures you post on facebook. Looks like a beautiful place. With the wildflowers starting to bloom even more spectacular.

Peaches, I am glad that your mother likes Golden Acres.  My dad was there for a while when it was a Jewish home.  He really liked the place.  Dorothy has been helping me lately.  Bill and I have both had a kind of flu.  I am feeling better today.  I hated having this crud, which seems to be going around.  Dorothy said such kind things about you and your mother.  She taught school in Garland for thirty plus years and was recognized there as an outstanding teacher.  She is also extremely well liked at Chambrel, a nursing home in Garland where my mother-in-law lives.  As for my health, I am doing well with home dialysis.
