Comments: On a trip to Houston this week I found and purchased Blackie Sherrod's book "scattershooting" released in the 70's. The "taxes" comments remindes me of one of his lines. "Our neighbor jones says our nation may not be the first to colonize the moon but you can bet we'll be the first to send foreign aid"... You'll have to excuse the overusage of "s I just like those little "s...overusage?? Mrs. Stamps would love to grade this.
Comments: Thank you, Ken. It looks like our friend from south of the equator doesn't find us all that interesting.
Comments: Yes, dear.
Comments: Kenneth, is that you? Please say it's so! (y)
Comments: Tommy D., Tommy D..... Where have you been..? When you retired, you left the planet... (That might not be such a bad idea, for an 'extended vacation'.. ) Anyway, glad to see you're 'still around'.... Somewhere..??
Comments: Nope. It's Argentina.
Comments: I think you may be right Doc.....but what in our G B could interest China?
Comments: Looks like the Leftnellgarrettitis Syndrome is alive and well south of the border. Actually, based on recent headlines, the real name for the hacker is probably Wo Fat.
Comments: hi ginger and john-two of the best of all time
Comments: Ooooo intrigue...did we have a hacker????
Comments: JS, as if many at fault drivers even have insurance.
Comments: The bad news, first. I had to pay a fortune to get hauled to a hospital a few years ago, but that's okay because the EMTs kept me from croaking due to low BP. The good news, second. This site seems to have been discovered by someone in Argentina. Makes me want to tango or eat a bowl of Blue Bell. Maybe I'll start with the Blue Bell.
Comments: Thanks John. I guess I needed to spell it out in detail....I suppose M City folk's premiums will go up! The article said other cities are contemplating this tax too. It also said that some states prohibit cities from levying this tax.
Comments: I don't think the "crash tax" will have any effect on citizens performing CPR. In Missouri City it will be a fee to cover the "expense" of a fireman or policeman acting as a first responder to a variety of situations. For now the plan is to bill the at-fault driver's insurance company for the fee. If that insurance company does not cover such an expense the City states they will NOT bill the individual. I hope this plan doesn't become popular. My guess is that it will mostly just force insurance companies to further raise their rates. http://www.missouricitytx.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?aid=335
Comments: That first responder tax is going to hurt those of us that have taken a CPR course and first aid courses, by law if we see anything resulting in a need for help we are required by Texas law to stop and render aid and can get into trouble if we do not use our services.
Comments: Look at this..... The city of Missouri City, Texas -- a suburb of Houston -- is going to start charging drivers for responding to car accidents, according to KHOU.com. The fee, known as a "crash tax," is meant to cover the costs of the first responders that come to aid in the event of an accident. And it's not cheap. According to KHOU, the fee can range from $500 to $2000 depending on the severity of the accident, and will be charged even if drivers don't call for help.
Comments: Although I love music, I'm no good at it other than to listen to it. Can't comment on the shorts incident. However, I know that Mike Eagan's mom ran a tight ship. I believe Mike is a doctor. He was very smart.
Comments: Of course Mike's mother didn't do that....it was a joke...ahem! My little secret is that when the camp was closed, I swam with boys!!! haaaaaaaaa! Their father ran the camp and I was a girlfriend ya know.
Comments: Oh Charlotte responded.. You forgot..It halted our 'shorts' wardrobe, for sure. If the camp was at Mt. Lebanon...no, Mike Egan's mother didn't do that. That was the Southern Baptists of the Dallas Baptist Association.. My mother couldn't 'mix-bathe' when she was a youth..! Mix-bathe...isn't that a funny..?
Comments: There was another Dallas case of molestation reported by the Times Herald. Back in the 90's, I had to consult with the Dallas Public Library Archives, to get copies. That was before the extensive 'online' searches that are done now. The woman at the DPL sent me copies that I have to this day.. If you search long enough, you can find those stories.. The story I was looking for evolved in the 80's but started back in the 60's.. These things go on for years before the truth comes out.. It's sad and surprising 'where and who' is involved.. ** No one has remembered the SOC concert choir 'shorts' incident, yet..?? It just was such a surprise that we girls were corrupting the boys in the choir by wearing them...?? (There are big sins and little sins, I guess.)
Comments: Mike Eagan was at Cliff Temple in my Sunday School Class. I don't remember his mother making the girls quit wearing shorts to rehearsals...haaaaaa!! She must have been STRICT. Hey, was she the reason that the girls and boys who were at church camp could not swim together??? Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Believe me, that did not keep the girls away from the boys....Haaaaa!
Comments: Last time we talked with Jack, he and Kelly were living in Rockwall. He was working out of his home by that time still practing law. He was happy and content with his new bride. Speaking of the Boy Scouts, there was one scout leader from the 63 class that was removed from scouting altogether due to molestation charges, it was even in the Times Herald when he was arrested. I will not say his name but his name came up in the files that were recently made public. I would have never expected that of him ever. You never know do you that one person you grew up with would turn out that way and cause harm to other kids.
Comments: Dan, Jack Cowley went on to become a personal injury attorney. Practiced in Houston and Corpus Christi and, last I heard, was practicing in Dallas (you can Google "Jack B. Cowley" for the details). He surfaced around 2007 with a beautiful new bride (Kelly) and by the looks of the pic below, seemed pretty content with Life. Seems back in the day we had a number of classmates involved in the Boy Scouts. At the time I had no idea some were achieving Eagle Scout status (like Robert Gann and Buzz Barron).
Comments: Mike was in scouts with me . We both lived on Fortune lane a block south of SOC. One of my favorite dreams was flying to Clara Oliver just above the electric lines. Come Holloween we would do all of the streets from SOC to Glendale shopping center and then west to ! 35 .we made a killing. Any one remember shopping for school supplies at Skillerns. For 5 dollars worth of supplies you could get a coupon for a shake or malt??? What ever happened to Jack Cowley? we dug a hole for something in scouts his father our scout master stepped into it and broke an ankle. His father died while he was in High school I brlieve
Comments: That's some story about Mike Egan and the Chemistry Set...gunpowder thing. My only experience with a chemistry set was at Tommy McGown's house in the 2nd grade. Tommy was from Harrell Budd, Boude Storey and Adamson..so you probably didn't know him, John. He made me carry the 'vile' of whatever from the kitchen to his room. I, of course spilt some on the kitchen floor and left a spot, like a 'permanent, eaten away spot'.. Egan's garage floor reminded me of that kitchen floor experience..The garage floor may have cleaned up better than the kitchen floor. I don't remember 'what' was in that vile, but it sounds like it could have 'eaten my hand'...! Oh well, another one or two of those memories from our youth.. (I guess it didn't damage our relationship, however, because Tommy was my boyfriend in the 3rd grade, too. Didn't mix any more 'concoctions' at his house, though...)
Comments: Dan, you made far more progress with Pamela Melton than I did. In my last semester at SOC we shared a class and I flirted with her. She made it very clear that she was in a serious relationship. Sure enough, right after graduation she married. I haven't thought of Mike Egan in many years. In the 7th grade he announced to me that he had discovered the "recipe" to make gunpowder. Surprisingly, the stuff only has 3 ingredients - two of which were already present in his chemistry set (sulfur & potassium nitrate). The third item required was powdered charcoal which he made by crushing up a charcoal briquet. He invited me over to his garage for a demonstration of the concoction. Mike took a long strip of cloth (soaked in alcohol) and poured his homemade gunpowder in a little pile on one end of the cloth. Then he rolled it up tightly for about a foot, leaving about 18 inches of cloth which was to be the "fuse". We watched in anticipation as he dropped a lit match on the fuse and the flames danced toward the gunpowder. Thankfully, it didn't explode but it did ignite and send a shower of sparks out both sides of the rolled up material. When the smoke cleared all that was left was a big burn mark in the shape of a "T" on the garage floor. Mike turned to me and said "Wow! I'm going to call this my 'T-Torch!'". I'm not sure if he ever got a patent on it?
Comments: Okay, all you former Concert Choir 'people'.. Do you remember Mike Egan's mother stopping the girls from wearing 'shorts' to the 'musical rehearsals' at night...at SOC..? Seeing his name..reminded me of that. Were we that 'indecently dressed'..? We were so use to wearing them for Deb rehearsals...that it was kind of 'weird' when she did that... Oh the joys of our youth...!
Comments: Hi Dan, I went to Clara Oliver along with many other SOC grads. In fact there are so many I can't name them all. Those who did go there jump in here and let Dan know. I had Mrs Grimes for home room....Peaches and Ouida Hoyle Rose can probably remember more people that I can. Nice to hear from you.
Comments: Did anyonr besides me ,Richard Dalton,Mike Egan and Pamela Melton attend Clara Oliver? We had a graduation party before we left for Boude Story. I kissed Pamela many times that night after my mother took me up to the drug store for alkaseltzer. I was so scareed before picking her up.Last (date) for me for along time. I was a Boy Scout! I didn't even get a driver's license until I was 18. I had a Honda 50 for years. Then a Metropolitian!!!
Comments: Dan, Mrs. Cargile kept my entire third grade class in because some kids were cutting up. Still remember the unfairness although I loved Mrs C. Ooh Brenda, those boys from Pease were su cute!! Don't worry. We Lisbon girls raised Barney right. Lol. |
