Seems like they sprinkled that sawdust to keep it from blowing away, and it was always kind of damp. It would dye shoe soles green. The 18th hole would keep the ball, so we couldn't sneak through again. I think it was the 18th hole that you hit from a platform. They had a whole array of putters to select from.

I, too, was a sawdust girl.  I loved it when after a rain, all the earthworms would crawl out.  I also loved going to the Orange Julius stand after golfing.  It was always icy cold.  Can you even get an orange julius anywhere?  Are there any mini-golf courses around anymore?

Saturday night was family night at Wee St. Andrew. Don't remember if it was carpet or sawdust. Remembering it was on the left side of the office and went up the hill and down. Would go to Polar Bear afterward also. Those were great times.

What was the name of the roller rink that we Harrell Buddites went to?  The PTA moms rented the rink for an hour on Friday afternoons.  I think it was Dal-?.  I know we crossed the Trinity and took the Cadiz St. exit and it was at the intersection with Industrial Blvd, by the Sportatorium.  I remember that my mom even made me a skating skirt.  Later, loved going to the Crest Theater and then to Polar Bear where Jimmy Nicodemus and Skip Morris waited on us.  I think my all-time favorite was playing miniature golf at the original Wee St. Andrews.

We went to the Crest Theater, the Polar Bear on Lancaster and the Ice and Roller Rinks in Fair Park.  And, of course, downtown to shop, all dressed up, including nylons and heels (and -- sometimes -- gloves).

Yep, we galloped on the way back..Lots of fun.. I couldn't go every Saturday to the movie. My Baptist mother thought  'it was too worldly'...The horses were fun..the other 'too worldly' stuff..wasn't. We also ironed clothes on Saturday, while listening to ' The Voice of Firestone', and other operatic things..The 'Met'..for one. I bet John didn't have to iron clothes back then..?

John, I too went to the riding stables, but I believe there was another one around Eagle Mountain Lake, or somewhere in that region where I went and rode.  Loved it.  Since I lived near Wynnewood in those early years I had my "preteen" card (discount of some sort) to get into the theater cheaper and was there every Saturday.  Also, went to Shamrock roller rink and then also the ice rink at Fair Park for ice skating.  Those were the days before I had to start working part-time, but very, very fun years. I treasure my growing up years and my years at SOC, never wanted them to end, but end they must and forward we go, lots of us in different directions, but isn't it wonderful that we can all meet back up in life on places like this site and others and still stay connected in some form.   I enjoy reading the life and times of others in here during their youth and of today.  Thanks for the memories John, brought a smile to my face today!

I have not thought about the Singing Hills Riding Stables in many, many years.

As a kid I went thru various stages for my "Saturday" entertainment. In elementary school it was Saturdays at the Wynnewood Theater where I would spend my entire allowance of 50 cents and generally come home sick from too much candy.

By Jr. High I was living in far south Oak Cliff and Saturdays would be spent at the riding stables in nearby Singing Hills. If you were lucky you'd get the Palomino horse. I recall one of their horses was left-handed and you could only mount him from the right side or he'd try to bite you. Had a horse step on my tennis shoe once ... that didn't feel too good.

The riding stable had a rule "Don't Gallop the Horses". As soon as we got out of sight of the stables we'd break into a smooth "lope". Felt better than the jarring of the ribs you got if you just went at a trot.

Then as a teen my Saturday allowance was spent at the skating rink (The Shamrock?). Clowning around and showing off for the girls seemed to be the main draw. Kind of a prequel to the "dating" age.

Now as a person of "retired" status, everyday is Saturday. Where did those places go? Where did those years go?

Enjoyed the Super Bowl yesterday, even the 35 minute delay.  I didn't watch anything leading up to it and almost missed the kickoff!  Hope everyone had a good weekend and look forward to a new month.

Phil, call up KLM and find out how to become the vendor of authentic Texas Barbecue for their first-class passengers. They have underestimated you. Big mistake on their part.

KLM is not under Title VII, since they are based in Amsterdam. I understand they also lowered pilots ages and some of them are suing.
It was a good ride. I actually had friends at the animal hotel in Schipol who gave me restaurant and pub suggestions and travel tips. I will miss them. Amsterdam was always my jumping off point and got to know the area well. A new stage in my life awaits! More BBQ events come on June Big Apple BBQ event.

Actually, all Federal judges can serve until "after death."  The Supremes are just more visible, and they try to hold off retiring until the term of a President likely to appoint someone of their same judicial persuasion.

It truly doesn't make sense to me.. Methodist Ministers have to retire by 70.. Why is it our Supreme Court Justices...can serve till 'after death'...?

KLM has changed their labor agreement re: animal handlers/grooms. I have been aged out, and can no longer do animal transport for KLM or Martin Air. They LOWERED age from 70 to 65. I am disappointed I have been doing this since 2003. No more free trips overseas and business class home on open ended ticket! Bummer!

Lynell, I too, was an only child. For four years I lived the "only child" high life ... then one cold February morning a rotten little sister showed up on the doorstep. The good times came to an abrupt end. The party was over.

Speaking of brothers, I wonder if there are any more SOCites who were only children like I was. Never learned how to scuffle and fight like my friends with sibs. Always got new stuff, plus all the bad things that came along toward the end.

I think merchants have already been passing on the cost of credit transactions to their customers, only it's been built into their pricing structure, so that everyone pays, even cash customers.  Now, they'll be able to tack it on as a separate fee.  Theoretically, it could result in a lowering of the underlying prices, but I doubt it.

Comments:

Supposedly this fee charge can start this Sunday the 27th.  It can be no more that what the retailer is charged as a "swipe fee" to the card networks.  Maybe 3%.  You are right...sure will make exchanges difficult...but then on some on line purchase returns we pay the postage and don't get that refunded...so hmmm!

Retailers are not going to like it if customers whip out cash. It will make them so vulnerable to criminals, plus they will have to refund returns in cash.

It amazes me that we can pay utility bills with credit cards. WHY would the City of Dallas allow this? Or TXU, or Atmos? Oh, well. Wasn't my decision, but I like credit card bennies.

Comments:

Speaking of a better era...I just read an article that retailers won the right to charge back the fees they pay credit card companies to the customers...IF THEY CHOOSE TO....now what do you think they will do....really?
