Usually, San Antonio trial lawyer Larry Macon only goes through 12 pairs of shoes per year. But in 2012, he burned through 14 pairs to earn his fourth record in the Guinness Book of World Records by running more than 150 marathons.
“I just went crazy. I totally went crazy,” says Macon, partner in Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in San Antonio, who ran more than 4,000 miles — not counting training.
The patent litigator adds, “Being in the book of records is not the biggest deal in the world, but trying to achieve, trying to do something more than you did before, is really the accomplishment.”
As of today, Macon had run 153 marathons, but he says he expects to run 157 by Dec. 31, which is also his 68th birthday.
His first record came in 2008, when Macon ran 105 marathons, his second in 2010 with 106 marathons and his third in 2011 with 113 marathons.
To fuel himself for so much running, Macon says he eats primarily fruits, vegetables and lots of carbohydrates. Aside from having chocolate milk after races, he is a vegan.
“I just eat constantly. If I ever stop running, I will weigh 350 pounds. . . . I am always hungry,” he says.
Macon works on cases on airplanes and in hotels while he’s traveling for marathons. He once participated in a long conference call for a case while he ran a marathon in Boston.
“I’ve always been a workaholic, so this is just an additional addiction. . . . I just love it,” says Macon.
