Comments: A bit of nostalgia if you please. Fifty, sixty, seventy years ago there was a very small grocery at the corner of Ewing and Hobson by the name of Libby's Grocery. It was owned by Leroy Libby and his brother. It had the old wood floors and painted wood exterior with the meatmarket where the Libbys would cut to order any cut of any meat from their hanging meat locker. The Libbys would deliver to most anyone in Trinity Heights who could not get to and from the store. Just ask Larry Libby. At approximately the same time there was an independent grocery in Snyder Plaza, the name escapes me, near SMU that delivered in the Park Cities. I know, none of this does anyone any good today.
Comments: You can order online from Tom Thumb and they will deliver. Of course, you can order non-perishables from Wal*Mart and have them delivered to your door. Fiesta Mart will give you a ride home, if you purchase at least $40 worth of groceries; their processed foods are high-priced, but they have an awesome variety of produce that's dirt cheap.
Comments: I found out from a reliable source that Tom Thumb on Lovers Lane (Old Town) delivers, too, for a nominal charge. You know who has a pretty nice small grocery area if you don't want to hike around a huge store? Braum's. We buy bovine hormone-free milk there, but they have some produce and a lot of boxed and canned things. It'll do in a pinch, and their ice cream isn't too shabby either.
Comments: Kathleen, go to www.schwans.com for food delivery. I have seen their trucks around town. One of my neighbors used them a couple of years ago when she was ill and couldn't get out for some time.
Comments: Thanks Lynell, I would never have thought of Amazon. You would think a city as big as Dallas would have a grocery store that delivers. I am sure there is a big need for such a service. Hope all of you fathers out there are enjoying your day.
Comments: Happy Father's Day to all the good men in the world who care about their children! I hope the Father's Day bunny was good to you, one and all. Kathleen, I don't know if any grocery stores deliver, but I do know you can buy a lot of groceries on Amazon. We've bought coffee from them, and they delivered it in a few days via UPS. You don't have to unload it from the car!
Comments: Does anyone know of a grocery store in Dallas that does home delivery? HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all of you SOC fathers and grandfathers. I hope you don't have to do all the cooking tomorrow.
Comments: They were pretty 'evil' on Dallas and there were so many 'subplots' going on, it was hard to keep up with them.. They were all lively characters. It's difficult to understand how they could come together for weddings, funeral, holidays...etc.
Comments: Sharon, I watched both episodes of Dallas. J.R. was as evil as ever. The writers kept comparing J. R. to the devil__liked thls part. The rest of the show was too much of a copy of the original feud between J. R. and Bobby, but this go around it is the sons who are going after each other. I don't think the show will make it, unless they beef up the roles of the Sue Ellen, Bobby and J.R.
Comments: While driving around the N. Dallas area today, I saw several cars with dry cleaning bags for windows, and tarps on lots of skylights. We live in NE Dallas, so we fared much better. Lakewood and Preston Hollow did not do as well. Our hail was anything but airy! It was more like Titlist golf balls, and much smaller stuff.
Comments: Okay, I confess, I watched the first hour of Dallas last night. Actually, didn't watch the entire show, but most of it. Gave up at 9:00 and switched over to Necessary Roughness, which I really like. Don't think this version of Dallas is going to make it.
Comments: I was wondering about you North Texas folks. I hope any damage was minimal. We experienced a hail storm while in our car last Thursday with no place for cover. The hail was the size of of the jaw breakers we used to have as kids...fortunately the hail was airy and did not damage our car, but it sure sounded like it was. The Porche next to us wasn't so lucky with his soft top and plastic back window.
Comments: We had pea-size hail for about 10 seconds, then a wonderful, ground-soaking rain for an hour. Watched the patio thermometer drop 10 degrees. On my way to work this morning, I could easily see the path of the storm that hit North Park. We're supposed to get a new roof soon from the storms that went through in April
Comments: Wonderful storm here, with lots of rain! Big ol' hailstones, too. Sounded like rocks hitting the roof. I do love a good storm, but was very glad to be home for this one.
Comments: Get ready for the roof salesmen! We just had twenty minutes of golf ball size hail falling from the sky. I just hope our cars aren't too damaged. All in all, we did have a about an hour of showers this afternoon. It was great to feel the cool weather. Did it rain in your part of the woods?
Comments: Sharon, just to let you know...I got my PPM (Pistol Packin Mama) license a few years back. It was fun taking the course, the written test and locking and loading for shooting the target. I have since let my license expire. You have to take a refresher course every few years to renew. Terry keeps his up, but I just wanted to see what the course was like and accomplish it...not carry for real. Your reunion sounds great. I'm glad your family keeps it up. That is wonderful.
Comments: Hey, Ginger. My brother was Asst. Superintendent for Personnel for the Garland ISD for years. He hired and fired, so if you were looking for a teaching position, I'm sure he interviewed you. I have no idea what his title is now, but he mainly deals with the athletic programs for the district. My family reunion in Canton on Saturday was great. Lots of real home cooked food. One of my cousins and her husband came in from Atlanta, GA. Some of you who grew up with the Cowboys might remember Craig Baynham, a running back. He's been married to my cousin for a number of years and is a full-time minister. A really nice guy. Lynell, I used to sew a lot back in the 70's and 80's, but finally gave my Kenmore to my nephew about 7 or 8 years ago. I always enjoyed sewing.
Comments: I did two sewing projects today. One, I made a little dress for our crock pot, because it looked pretty ugly in a Bed Bath & Beyond bag. Then David and I recovered the seat for a chair he stripped and stained. That chair was on its way to Goodwill when we had second thoughts. Sewing is mostly about thinking, engineering and ironing. The foot fell off my machine midway through, and that took an hour to figure out. Then we went for a swim, and had meatball sammiches. Now I anxiously await the season finale for Mad Men, my all time fave TV show.
Comments: Sharon, I met your brother, a long time ago.. Must have been looking for a job.. He was in some 'school' capacity..at the time. It's Friday.. Have a restful and peaceful weekend, unless of course, you'd rather have a 'rowdy' weekend..
Comments: Ginger, I haven't shot a gun in years but used to go bird hunting with my first husband and really enjoyed it. We do have a number of guns in our house because Steve used to collect them, but I'm not sure if I could even load one with the right ammo. I don't know anything about Girl Scouts, but the 2nd cousin I referred to is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout for girls and has remained active all the way through college. And I can't imagine there being a gun in her family's home. My brother used to be a big hunter and had dogs and everything. He doesn't do it now mainly because of age and he's too busy with the Garland school district and all his grandkids. But he was one of the first in the State to get licensed to carry way back when. Back in the '80's, when Gary was principal at North Garland High, the graduating seniors on the student council gave him a brand new high-powered rifle as their going away gift. Can you imagine that happening now!!
Comments: For those of you that know Sandi Black-Wolverton and Mike Wolverton, from the class of 62, they lost their daughter Lisa today after a long illness. To send a card of condolence their address is 4437 Alcott Drive, Nashville, Tn 37215. God Bless this family in their loss.
Comments: Kathleen, we have a lot of that here, but apparently they have money. Those people drove SUV's.. Lived out in Cordova, Germantown or Collierville.. Apparently, it started by the wife of one of these tough 'hombres' opening the door on the other guys SUV. The 'other guy' pushed the woman, which caused the wife's husband to get out his gun and shoot the guy....DEAD..! One of them is still DEAD and the other one in prison.. Seems this problem could have been handled in another manner.. It doesn't always happen in Texas..!
Comments: Ginger, They were probably "white trash."
Comments: Well, Phlbbbtttttttttt..!!!!! to you, Barry.. (Did I spell that right.?) (They were white and apparently very 'redneck' or maybe they thought they were cowboys..? One of them got very dead, out of that argument.)
Comments: Ginger: I resent your tone when referring to "white folks". It sounds very derogatory toward what might be my "kin". On a kinder note, we took our son to Disneyland when he was 3-4. We stood in line for what seemed like hours to ride the Matterhorn. Of course, he got tired after about 10 minutes and I had to hold him. We finally got to the top and ready to board the ride and he would not get on. He started screaming like only a 3-4 year old can do, so I got to carry him all the way back down. Joan was smart and had waited outside eating ice cream. This was only one of many fond memories I have traveling with Bryan. We went skiing at Breckenridge when he was 2. We dropped him off at daycare and when we came back, the manager of daycare said "We do not ever want to see this child again!" I could go on and on.
Comments: NRA is okay if they don't push their agenda beyond good sense. I have never been a gun person, but there are people on both sides of my family that have guns..and go hunting on deer leases, annually. My biological father, Donald Harrod, had a gun collection in his home and was paranoid about someone breaking in.. That does happen occasionally. About 2 weeks ago, in Memphis.. Big, attack guns hit the street.. Memphis has such a 'ghetto' crowd, one could worry over that. When they pack and carry, is when it gets scary.. We had an incident at Panera Bread..several years back. One guy killed another guy in the parking lot. These were 'white folks', too. Two families ruined over anger out of control and packing guns.. Don Navarro took me to the Dallas Gun Club, back in the 60's. That was the only time, I've shot a gun.. I very rarely go to the 62 site, but I did today. Sandy and Mike Wolverton..lost their daughter to cancer.. Very sad time for that family.. Have a nice Thursday. I'll visit my local Sierra Club for the last time in Tenn...tonight. The next one I attend will probably be in Texas.. ![]()
Comments: Gotta love it! I just had a note from a second cousin about the family reunion. She just graduated (in 3 years) from UT-Austin a couple of weeks ago. She said she was so sorry that she wouldn't be able to come to the reunion this year, but she will be conducting an NRA sponsored "pistols and shotguns" class at the Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico! My kind of young woman.
Comments: Since the very beginning of the Mickey Mouse Club and Walt Disney Presents, I always dreamed of going to Disneyland. I finally got my chance the summer on 1970, when I was hitch-hiking around California in celebration of International Women's Day (the 50th anniversary of women's suffrage); don't ask, it made sense at the time. Disneyland had a policy of not admitting hippies back then, and I worried that my granny glasses, tie-dyed jeans and moccasins might disqualify me, but made it in. I love rabbits and still have the photo of me and the White Rabbit -- from Alice in Wonderland -- walking down the street, hand-in-hand. The Matterhorn broke down while we were high up, inside the "mountain." The Park's reaction was worthy of Seal Team 6. The lights immediately came on, along with PA system announcements to remain calm and in place, and help was on the way. Almost immediately, an army of employees materialized and escorted each rider to -- and down -- the exit stairs. Each rider was surrounded by no less than 4 employees, with the ones on both sides taking our arms and firmly supporting us all the way down. At the bottom, we were met by Guest Relations, who took down our contact information, offered on-the-spot medical assistance, served us refreshments and gave us goody bags full of vouchers for a lot of free stuff, etc.; seamless crisis management, turning a potential negative experience into an overwhelmingly positive one. People rag on the Disney folks for being control freaks, but -- in this case -- it was an asset.
Comments: My mother's annual Peden Family Reunion is this coming Saturday, June 9 in Canton, TX. So any SOCite in the area is invited. I'm in charge. Maybe "Peach Guy" and Mike and Suzanne Black will drop by for a free lunch. It will be in the Pavillion at Mill Creek Resort (I20 and Hwy. 19) from 10:00 - 4:00 p.m. My mom is the oldest (93) of three living from 13 children. Needless to say, we had some really big reunions when I was a child.
Comments: I got carded a few months ago when I asked for the $1 senior parking card at Presbyterian Hospital. Made my day, for sure. |
