"School burgers"?

Does anyone remember the green hamburgers we used to eat for lunch when we purchased our school lunches. My question is what was in those hamburgers that turned them green?

Ginger, I don't know about the rest of you, but I agree most of us have paid in over the years and receiving out Social Security checks at a time when we are no longer able to work really makes a difference in our golden years. Seniors are the one group who seem to be doing well economically compared to other age groups and that is because of Social Security. I, personally, like Obamacare. I like not being turned down for insurance coverage because of a predisposed health condition. We also need a strong honest government to keep up the infrastruture of our country (ex.bridges, roads, water, and other needs). It isn't Socialism but common sense.

You can definitely 'Live on Less'.. It helps to have some degree of intelligence...to do so..  I had a house that we renovated, and I designed a new kitchen.. We were moving on up..as the song said.  Bad marriage, bad situation. I miss that house, but I wouldn't trade the peace of mind and ownership of my 'own mind' that I have now.. There are ways you can do this.
Remember most of us have paid into the system...for many, many years. We deserve to get some of this back.. Realize your priorities, and figure it out..

Charlotte, I wasn't telling anyone to pretend to be destitute. I was just remembering a meeting I went to at Golden Acres where they discussed the various ways to pay for Senior care. They also discussed setting up trusts and other possibilities.

You might want to check this out.  I was a member of AARP for several years and dropped my membership when they supported Obamacare.  I never did get any benefits from them.  I tried to get cheaper insurance, cheaper hotel rooms, etc with no benefit.
So, I had heard several radio ads for AMAC and I decided to join.  I checked out their home and auto insurance and even though the home insurance was just a little less than I was paying with Farmers, my auto insurance premium is almost 50% less.  My homeowners insurance and car insurance combined is only about $10 a month more than my car insurance was before switching.
Your results might vary.  Their insurance is with Travelers.

You have your facts all wrong.  The father does not go to work everyday.  He's just fathering more children with more women so he can increase his income.  It's the American way.  It started with FDR and the CCC, grew under LBJ as the Great Society and has continued with every administration since then. The Land of Entitlements!

People...they 'hide' their money.. I do know that.. My money's visible and it's not much. I live in very nice subsidized (I'm sorry to say) Baptist Senior Housing.. There are people that give their property to their  children or I have a friend that gave her house to her Methodist Church.. She said it was too hard to sell, in a questionable neighborhood(actually all of Memphis is a questionable neighborhood) so she signed it over.. It brought her rent down here, which is based on SS, retirement and assets.. There's a 93 yr old former nurse here, and they just found her CD and IRA..I guess she thought they were hidden...?
1st Baptist Memphis has an ordained Female Junior Pastor and female deacons.. I'm amazed, but of course, they're not in the Southern Baptist Convention.. It's a miracle that I found a church with Baptist not SBC, in the title that is recognizing women as equals.. There is a God..!

Another scam is for a mother of young children to claim she doesn't know who the baby daddy is, so they can get on the dole.  Meanwhile, the father lives in the house with the mother and kids, and goes to work every day.  .

Oh, so one is really not destitute, but pretends one is destitute by "giving" ones $ away so that our taxes can pay for their care? I believe that is the entitlement called Medicaid. I suppose that is some of the fraud that I have read about and why Medicaid is making it harder to get it.....even for those who really need it. That is, unless one is an illegal immigrant.

Charlotte, What I recall is this if a person has less than $2000, after a two year period then Medicare will pick up some of the costs. This may have changed, but it was true several years ago.
4200$2000

I thought Bill and Melinda Gates did that. Didn't Warren Buffet do that, too and numerous others.. I think it's referred to as generosity, maybe philanthropy...?  Maybe, just maybe..

Excuse me...but, why would anyone give their money away while they are living?  Isn't that what most people do upon dying?  Or maybe put in trusts for their children?....OH...did you read about that waaaay wealthy guy who killed that young man in a hit and run from the scene on foot(while high) has adopted his girl friend so he can preserve his $$$???

I just received several documents in the mail dealing with my 91 year old mother-in-law's income tax. She has several investments in which she has to pay quarterly taxes. She is living in a nursing home and she has to pay the home a minimum of $6100 a month. She hasn't been able to work in years and suffers from dementia. She is also deaf. One might think if anyone didn't need to pay income tax it would be her.

Taxes, yikes I hate this time of the year.  I always have to pay and I am sure I will this year.  Looks like you would get a break after 65 but you pay on your SS and anything I pull from E. Jones accounts.  Mine is in the $$$$$ usually and that just doesn't seem right.  Can I deduct all the house repairs and tree cutting ... NO... no more deductions just pay.  Will try Turbo-Tax this year for the first time.  I have a CPA that usually does them and may end up back there.  Thank you for letting me vent.  Wish I were as brave as John's brother.

I file my taxes every year even though I don't make anything or get anything back.  HR Block told my dad he didn't even have to file because he was in his 90's.  So maybe there is something good about getting old.

Haaaa!  Right you are.  I'm 13 years away from 80, like I'm 13 years away from 54, which was just yesterday.  However, to my credit, I'm not looking into people's kitchen windows while they shuffle around in their bathrobes in the morning!

Regarding my non-tax paying brother-in-law, he is 70 yrs. old and uses the services of an 80+ "bookkeeper" in Longview.

When Dru and I pressed him for details on how it is he doesn't have to pay taxes any more, he kind of hemmed and hawwed around the answer. He didn't really know why, only that "Pat" (the bookkeeper) tells him "you don't have to pay this year". And that's good enough for him.

As best we could finally determine, there may have been some confusion in his head between paying income tax and having your property taxes frozen at a certain level at age 65.

Pat does "file" a return for him but I suspect his massive medical bills create enough deductions to offset his only income (Social Security checks).

For the record, Dru and I still file & pay taxes each year (even though it often gets pushed off til Oct. 15th due to my procrastinating nature).

JS- sorry to burst your tax bubble.... but... for the rest of your life you have to pay your taxes!  Only, I repeat, only if you don't owe any tax can you stop filing a tax return.  However, if you owe tax, or, you're due a refund, you will need to file a return.

At least that's what an accountant told us several years ago when I herd that rumor about not paying taxes after 65.

John, It seems like there is some rule about not having to pay income tax after you turn 65. The only reason I can think of is you retire at 65 and you no longer have enough income on which to pay taxes. I was also told if you go into a nursing home you won't have to pay taxes especially if you have given all your money away. Again, I think this has to do with the amount of income a person has. I guess we can ask our class economic advisor JUD what he thinks the law is about not paying taxes after the age of 65.

Charlotte, I even remember some of the jingles. My great aunt and uncle took me on trips to New Mexico and Colorado and they let me shot my Daisy BB gun out the window at the signs!
