Comments: Taxes, yikes I hate this time of the year. I always have to pay and I am sure I will this year. Looks like you would get a break after 65 but you pay on your SS and anything I pull from E. Jones accounts. Mine is in the $$$$$ usually and that just doesn't seem right. Can I deduct all the house repairs and tree cutting ... NO... no more deductions just pay. Will try Turbo-Tax this year for the first time. I have a CPA that usually does them and may end up back there. Thank you for letting me vent. Wish I were as brave as John's brother.
Comments: I file my taxes every year even though I don't make anything or get anything back. HR Block told my dad he didn't even have to file because he was in his 90's. So maybe there is something good about getting old.
Comments: Haaaa! Right you are. I'm 13 years away from 80, like I'm 13 years away from 54, which was just yesterday. However, to my credit, I'm not looking into people's kitchen windows while they shuffle around in their bathrobes in the morning!
Comments: hey you two...80 is coming faster than we think so lay off the 80 year olds!
Comments: We have an 80+ neighbor who does taxes. He also tells me he looks into my kitchen window. Eeeuw!
Comments: Regarding my non-tax paying brother-in-law, he is 70 yrs. old and uses the services of an 80+ "bookkeeper" in Longview. When Dru and I pressed him for details on how it is he doesn't have to pay taxes any more, he kind of hemmed and hawwed around the answer. He didn't really know why, only that "Pat" (the bookkeeper) tells him "you don't have to pay this year". And that's good enough for him. As best we could finally determine, there may have been some confusion in his head between paying income tax and having your property taxes frozen at a certain level at age 65. Pat does "file" a return for him but I suspect his massive medical bills create enough deductions to offset his only income (Social Security checks). For the record, Dru and I still file & pay taxes each year (even though it often gets pushed off til Oct. 15th due to my procrastinating nature).
Comments: Sandy's so right. Remember Leona Helmsley? Slammer time!
Comments: John-Boy, is your tongue permanently attached to your cheek?
Comments: JS- sorry to burst your tax bubble.... but... for the rest of your life you have to pay your taxes! Only, I repeat, only if you don't owe any tax can you stop filing a tax return. However, if you owe tax, or, you're due a refund, you will need to file a return. At least that's what an accountant told us several years ago when I herd that rumor about not paying taxes after 65.
Comments: John, It seems like there is some rule about not having to pay income tax after you turn 65. The only reason I can think of is you retire at 65 and you no longer have enough income on which to pay taxes. I was also told if you go into a nursing home you won't have to pay taxes especially if you have given all your money away. Again, I think this has to do with the amount of income a person has. I guess we can ask our class economic advisor JUD what he thinks the law is about not paying taxes after the age of 65.
Comments: Charlotte, I even remember some of the jingles. My great aunt and uncle took me on trips to New Mexico and Colorado and they let me shot my Daisy BB gun out the window at the signs!
Comments: Just for fun You may need to watch it twice; once to watch the Burma shave signs change and once to catch all the pictures plus listening to the music of the Statler Brothers. Too bad the under 50 crowd missed it! Go to:
Comments: John: Are you using your real birth certificate or the one that you had digitally enhanced?
Comments: Barry, I plan to just file an amended return and include a copy of my birth certificate and Medicare card to validate that I reached the tax-free age of 65.
Comments: John: Ask your bro-in-law how we get back what we paid the last 2 years? I should pay closer attention to the tax laws. Obviously a new law from the Obama administration, since most of his cabinet members have been accused of not paying taxes. They are really looking out for us "Seniors"!
Comments: Taxes, our Taxes, All Hail the Mighty State. John, if I didn't fear spending my golden years in Leavenworth, I would follow your bro-in-law's suggestion..
Comments: My east Texas brother-in-law told me that "once you turn 65 you don't have to pay taxes no more". And he keeps up with these things.
Comments: Taxes?
Comments: Has anyone else started on taxes yet? We're doing ours today. Fortunately, I put away all the knives and other sharp objects before we began this project. Turbo Tax is a great invention.
Comments: Bob, there could be several reasons why Mary Irene has decided to keep on working. It could be that her insurance doesn't pay if she isn't working. but I suspect she draws a lot of her energy being around groups. Also, If she keeps working she will be too busy to think about her condition. I agree, Bob, she is tough and that should help her get well. May God bless her and help her to keep going.
Comments: Talked to Mary Irene just a while ago. She had just returned from MDA and had had radiation therapy and her back was already feeling better. She will be going to MDA every day for a while to get therapy AND WILL BE TEACHING HER FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS EVERY DAY......WHAT???? That's what she said. I know there are some tough folk in this world but......
Comments: Bill, I have also heard of miracles happening at M. D. Anderson. I pray that Mary is one of them. That is a world class hospital.
Comments: MD Anderson is a fantastic place and if they have taken on Mary's case then there is HOPE. Donna and I have a very good friend in Kentucky who was told by her doctor and hospital there that there was nothing else they could do for her cancer. After 2 years with MD Anderson, and lots of prayers, she appears to be cancer free. Hang in there Mary!
Comments: Very sad news. Mary Bach has a turmor on her upper and lower spine, in the lining of her lungs and a spot on her right breast. She will have radiation and start the chemo pill. She is handling it well like Mary does but she has asked for our continued prayers. Keri, her daughter, is spending the night with her and they will go tomorrow to start the mapping process. Her doctors are being very positive and she really likes them and loves MD Anderson.
Comments: AT LISBON??? I remember the Principal, but was NOT scared of him. However, you, Lynell, know how naive I am when it comes to stuff and authority. Why should I be afraid??? DUH! When I taught second grade, our Principal was cool and did come in the lunch room to be with the kids... I ate with my children....Oh, and I must say, taught them table manners.
Comments: The grade school principal was a scary authority figure. I'm not sure he ever ate lunch. I thought he probably ate little kids. haaaa.
Comments: Ben A Matthews was a High School Principal...a grade school principal is a waaaaaaaaaaaaay different thing....like 10 years different. And yes, I can imagine a grade school principal eating with the kids....the kids are still young enough to look up to the Principal and teachers. Um, at least I think they are. I don't remember much about Ben except his bad breath from smoking, but I have girl friends...ahem...that have stories to tell about him from high school...I just remember Mr Quast (that cutie)..and how he always reprimanded SueZan Reedy and me for not being good sports in the assemblys ...oh, that is another story!
Comments: My mother and Virginia Aday were friends. I really liked Steve. They came to our house and probably visa versa, too. So many years ago... Really nice people..
Comments: Just opened the obits and the first one is Virginia Hightower Aday, Steve Aday's mom. Funeral is tomorrow at noon at Laurel Land.
Comments: Public school today is very different from what I remember. We know a grade school principal who called 911 because a kindergarten girl was destroying her office and she dare not touch her. This principal eats lunch at a table with the students in the cafeteria every day. I can't imagine Ben A. Matthews plopping down at a table in the lunchroom and unwrapping a sandwich. |
