Just for fun

You may need to watch it twice; once to watch the Burma shave signs change and once to catch all the pictures plus listening to the music of the Statler Brothers. Too bad the under 50 crowd missed it! Go to:

Are you using your real birth certificate or the one that you had digitally enhanced?

Barry, I plan to just file an amended return and include a copy of my birth certificate and Medicare card to validate that I reached the tax-free age of 65.

Ask your bro-in-law how we get back what we paid the last 2 years?   I should pay closer attention to the tax laws.  Obviously a new law from the Obama administration, since most of his cabinet members have been accused of not paying taxes.  They are really looking out for us "Seniors"!

Taxes, our Taxes, All Hail the Mighty State.

John, if I didn't fear spending my golden years in Leavenworth, I would follow your bro-in-law's suggestion..

My east Texas brother-in-law told me that "once you turn 65 you don't have to pay taxes no more". And he keeps up with these things.

Has anyone else started on taxes yet?  We're doing ours today.  Fortunately, I put away all the knives and other sharp objects before we began this project.  Turbo Tax is a great invention

Bob, there could be several reasons why Mary Irene has decided to keep on working. It could be that her insurance doesn't pay if she isn't working. but I suspect she draws a lot of her energy being around groups. Also, If she keeps working she will be too busy to think about her condition. I agree, Bob, she is tough and that should help her get well. May God bless her and help her to keep going.

Talked to Mary Irene just a while ago.  She had just returned from MDA and had had radiation therapy and her back was already feeling better.  She will be going to MDA every day for a while to get therapy AND WILL BE TEACHING HER FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS EVERY DAY......WHAT????  That's what she said.  I know there are some tough folk in this world but......

Bill, I have also heard of miracles happening at M. D. Anderson.  I pray that Mary is one of them. That is a world class hospital.

MD Anderson is a fantastic place and if they have taken on Mary's case then there is HOPE. Donna and I have a very good friend in Kentucky who was told by her doctor and hospital there that there was nothing else they could do for her cancer. After 2 years with MD Anderson, and lots of prayers, she appears to be cancer free.

Hang in there Mary!

Very sad news. Mary Bach has a turmor on her upper and lower spine, in the lining of her lungs and a spot on her right breast. She will have radiation and start the chemo pill. She is handling it well like Mary does but she has asked for our continued prayers. Keri, her daughter,  is spending the night with her and they will go tomorrow to start the mapping process. Her doctors are being very positive and she really likes them and loves MD Anderson.

AT LISBON???  I remember the Principal, but was NOT scared of him.  However, you, Lynell, know how naive I am when it comes to stuff and authority.  Why should I be afraid???  DUH!

When I taught second grade, our Principal was cool and did come in the lunch room to be with the kids... I ate with my children....Oh, and I must say, taught them table manners.

The grade school principal was a scary authority figure.  I'm not sure he ever ate lunch.  I thought he probably ate little kids.  haaaa.

Ben A Matthews was a High School Principal...a grade school principal is a waaaaaaaaaaaaay different thing....like 10 years different.  And yes, I can imagine a grade school principal eating with the kids....the kids are still young enough to look up to the Principal and teachers.   Um, at least I think they are.

I don't remember much about Ben except his bad breath from smoking, but I have girl friends...ahem...that have stories to tell about him from high school...I just remember Mr Quast (that cutie)..and how he always reprimanded SueZan Reedy and me for not being good sports in the assemblys  ...oh, that is another story!

Public school today is very different from what I remember.  We know a grade school principal who called 911 because a kindergarten girl was destroying her office and she dare not touch her.  This principal eats lunch at a table with the students in the cafeteria every day.  I can't imagine Ben A. Matthews plopping down at a table in the lunchroom and unwrapping a sandwich.

Yes, Ken, it was the episode with the contaminated cutting board.  Yuck.  And, I agree, Diner's Drive-In's and Dives is my favorite.  Guy Fieri just makes that show fun to watch.  The other show that I like to watch if I get home early from work, is Cash Cab.  Not only entertaining but educational and fun too.  I thought this was going to be a football-less weekend, but no, they threw in the College Senior Bowl so we crazies can keep our fix going. Yea!

Can you imagine a teacher today throwing erasers???? Not, that the kids don't deserve it, but he or she would be fired, sued, hung out to dry, etc.  I think of the hugs I gave and received from my second graders back in the 70s and know  I wouldn't be able to touch them like that today.

Did that person call that teacher a S E S to her face????  I suppose all ethnic groups have their prejudices.  Sounds like something he heard at home too.

Kathleen...bullying is anything new is it?  That poor teacher just wasn't prepared for Jr High bullies.  I can't imagine.  However, I remember some of that going on between students at SOC....but nothing that would drive a student to commit suicide as happens today.

Been a few weeks since I logged in to the site and want to say "Thanks for the Chuckles."

As far as Sharon's comment about how she didn't watch the S O U message.  Actually I'd rather watch Maury and Jerry Springer reruns.  Have a great day everyone.

We wrote notes in Algebra, in the 9th Grade..Lots of notes..Henry Coomes was in that class, I think Sandra Chancellor/Fant..We didn't harass her other than driving her crazy with our notes.. There was the World History teacher that threw erasers at us when we talked..
SOC... Ms. Yium's class/10th Grade one football player(no name mentioned) called her "Hong Kong Karen and Slant Eyed Slut"..He knows who he is and I was embarrassed and appalled at him because he was in a minority group, too. I will never, never understand that kind of behavior..

I hope Mr. McMullen found a different line of work.

My favorite Food Network show is Good Eats. I always learn something from Alton Brown, and I like the characters he comes up with.  Sometimes those shows will gross me out with their yucky food handling (and lack of washing) techniques -- like when Rachel Ray knocks dirt off something with a towel, then chops it up and tosses it in the pan.  I scrub our produce with Fit Wash.  I'm amazed by what comes off grapes.  Well, I don't scrub grapes, but I do let them sit in water with Fit Wash.  Eeeuw!

Charlotte, I probably shouldn't mention names but two of the worst offenders were Tommy Ingram and Gary Stresnek (sp). Two people I haven't thought about in ages. Mr. McMullan was young and effeminate in his mannerisms. It was hard for me to believe that this was an honors class. In all the years that I taught or took classes, I always remember the behavior of this class. I have taught some rough classes over the years, but nothing ever came close to what happened in this English class.

No worries Sharon...nothing new in thuh S O U speech.  Same o , same o!!!!!!

I can't Buleeev any of our Oak Cliff Thugs could force a teacher out the window and make him cry...IN JR HIGH YET????!!!!!!  He must have been no older than we were.  Nothing like that LL (Low Life) stuff happened at Storey...for sure...um...well not in the lowly classes where I was....you smart Eagles up in those smarty classes might have been mean enough to do that...I only remember at SOC the guys in my Mr Brown speech class all jumped out the window at a certain time.  Mr Brown was not amused (He actually was) and ran around and opened the door to the enclosed square and DEMANDED that they return to class....oh I wish I had been privy to their secret because I would have jumped out too and probably been kick out of speech class and  Golden Debs.  I never remember tryin to intimidate a teacher for goodness sake.

Phyllis - Thanks for the name and memories. Poor guy, screaming and crying, not your usual characteristics for a teacher. Wonder whatever happened to him?

Reevo - Were you watching the one with the contaminated cutting board and raw chicken? Unreal. I love that show, but not as much as Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives.

Phyllis, I was in Mr. McMullan's advanced, honors English class. I remember how horrible some of the boys in our class tortured him everyday. Their goal seemed to be to break him down until he started crying. His class was totally out of control.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be uncommon for teachers of Spanish to give students who speak Spanish a harder time than the rest of their class. I had a friend who told me the biggest mistake she ever made was letting her Spanish teacher (at Richmond) know she spoke Spanish. Her test papers came back with lots of RED ink.

2012..Wait and See...Wait and See... It's not just the weather that's weird.. No predictions on anyone..Either party...
Those of us that have 'appeared' on this earth since WWII, have seen a lot of changes...
I will predict that the 'Kindle' will go the way of the CB radio, however... I still like books.. I remember my mother reading me "Hiawatha', when I was 4..out of a book.. I still love that poem. Not reading it on a Kindle or 'whatever' you want to call it..
Wait and See... Life is never boring..
