Comments: I saw a story on TV about a progressive private school in California (I think) that has no computers and cell phones are not allowed. The children learn how to interact, read from things printed on paper, play simple instruments, and other things like we did in grade school. They may even learn cursive writing. I think tuition was $9000 per semester, and parental involvement is required.
Comments: Now, that is "progress"? They can read SOME cursive and the oldest is 19???? Sad!
Comments: Many schools are no longer teaching cursive writing. Both of my Grandsons do not know cursive. The older is 19, educated in Mount Ida, Arkansas. The younger is 16, with elementary school in DISD and secondary schools in the celebrated Birdville ISD (Watauga & Haltom City, Texas). The only cursive they write is their signatures, although they can read some. They print everything else -- which is much slower than cursive writing -- but do most of their "writing" via texts.
Comments: Memo To Betty Burks: I did hear from your brother Jim today. Thanks for passing the word along. Very sorry to learn your mother is in bad shape.
Comments: Is this Betty Gibbs? Whoever, I am sorry about your mother and will raise a prayer.
Comments: John S: Handled your query as requested and understand he responded as instructed! I'm a Nook person (have two) and use my iPad but still love paper books as well. While my job was all the computer part didn't work in a special library for 18 years for naught. Cut us some slack - our mother is deteriorating rapidly... Say a prayer, please.
Comments: Cynthia, I didn't see that, but it doesn't surprise me. The preschoolers are using computers in school now. Did you see where several states are not going to teach cursive any more? I wonder what more "progress" we will see in our life time.
Comments: Did you recently see that video of a baby - toddler trying to turn the page of a magazine by sliding its finger of the page and could not figure out what was wrong? Another era gone aside? Wonder how that next generation will do with their eyes - bet they will all be wearing glasses early.
Comments: Love my Kindle, and use it daily! But when flying, I take paperbacks because I don't mind losing them.
Comments: I'll bet some one-armed soldier at the VA Hospital would love that Kindle!
Comments: hope your son doesn't read this GB! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Comments: Joan got a Kindle last Christmas and has never used it. She likes having a book in her hands. If our son hadn't given it to her, it would have been on ebay months ago.
Comments: Yeah! Hey John - could you just bring my Kindle to the party? So looking forward to seeing you. Good way to start the year and end the year with SOC friends. Looking forward to starting the Christmas season with SOC friends.
Comments: All of you Kindle entitlees, go stand by the mail box and click your heels. I'm sure one will be arriving shortly, unless it's a postal holiday. On another topic, Dru and I are loading the sleigh and planning to attend the Dec. 4th holiday extravaganza. Seems we've missed the past two years. Last SOC function we made was a luncheon on a drizzly day back in January.
Comments: And Sharon.
Comments: P.S. to J. S.: Charlotte, Jud, Cynthia, Barry and a number of other people are "entitled" to Kindle Fires, too.
Comments: I note there was no Kindle Fire on my doorstep today. Thanks a LOT, Johnny. However, I did receive my secret invisible ink pens from Amazon(complete with ultraviolet light to see if I got my driver's license no. right) and have been busy writing that on all my valuables. Fortunately, that didn't take very long, because I don't have that many valuables. I had time to make shrimp scampi for dinner. Always thought that was redundant, like shrimp shrimp. Maybe it's just me.
Comments: Interesting John - looks like it could be SOC 63 group for the most part. Good seeing you.
Comments: Count me in, John. I'm also "entitled" to all those goodies.
Comments: John, could you please send me one of those cute new Kindle Fire things?
Comments: Betty, I am sending you a Top Secret GPS-related email under separate cover. For Your Eyes Only! Eat the message after you read it. JS
Comments: I laughed and laughed at your "government should supply everyone with GPS" remarks. My brother (Jim Burks '61) keeps looking for the 'perfect' handheld unit. I think he now has at least five. (I keep mentioning eBay, sell...) I think he just found his 200th or so.
Comments: Go, Johnny, go!
Comments: Barry, sorry I missed you at the pool - but I was over closer to the lake. We had 30 teams show up and about 40 participants in the flash mob. Definitely some interesting characters. I got to celebrate my 300th geocache (see pic). ![]()
Comments: Johnny: I went to the geocache site and signed up. I said that I was referred by Johnny Geo. I noticed that there is a location in Port O'Connor and I plan to find it Thanksgiving week. It appears to be over water but it says that you don't have to get on a boat or a dock. I guess I'll get a snorkel. There are also some in Southlake put there by the Parks and Recreation Dept trying to increase muggings, er, I mean, interest in the parks. You were not at the pool this morning!
Comments: Thank you, Veterans!
Comments: Good morning class of '63. Happy Veteran's Day to all our SOC military men & women. Thank You for your service! God Bless our country & our SOC Bears!
Comments: Tomorrow is 11-11-11.............I read that there are many couples marrying tomorrow.
Comments: In case anyone is wondering what they were going to do December 4 at 1:00 p.m., take a look at the Events page. Peaches sent the invitation to her annual Christmas party put on by her and her wonderful hostesses. I totally concur with Charlotte's comment about Dorothy. She and Ada and I think Sharon and possibly others dug through all those records downtown at DISD to find us. This was before the Internet, cell phones, Facebook, etc. Kudos! And I am sorry to hear about Marilyn's mom.
Comments: Hey Dorothy, thank you for keeping up with us...you have done such a wonderful job of this....I wonder if our alums know you are the one who found most of us for the first few reunions...sooooo many years ago? JS...your heart ring find looks like a Judith Ripka piece of jewelry. That is not shabby...she is a wonderful jewelry designer and did some cubic stuff! Her signature is hearts. |
