Comments: Oh, I remember waiting in line to see Elsie, Beauregard and their calf. How funny! Now I have 22 Elsies...who'd uh thunk it? Fun memories of the fair. I saw a picture MMM in Cowboys and Indians Magazine. He still looks good and would love to hear him again someday. WIFE FOUR???? Whoa!!!
Comments: I'm back, Elvis...! We had to change buses in Dallas on Tuesday night... We rode 'Big Daddy's Caddy' to Ft. Worth.. (I thought I was back in Memphis..!) I was not impressed with the bus driver that called himself..Big Daddy.. Out of Dallas.. Please..! Fondest memories of Fair.. Elsie the Borden Cow( and my mug that I just retrieved from my sister's possessions..she wouldn't give it back) Big Tex. 'Smooching' through the Planetarium Show with Michael Martin Murphey in the 9th grade.. We deliberately planned to meet at the Fair..and then the Planetarium Show, was one of our destinations...! That wasn't 'necessarily', our plan 'the 'smooching part' , but it happened. I will always wonder if..that woman next to us...knew.. Got through to Mike's 4th wife on FB..to let him and his mother, Lois Murphey, know that my mother died.. Life is funny, sad, joyous...but never boring... Bye.. Ginger ![]()
Comments: Good memories from the Fair. I haven't been since 63 or 64. I remember winning one if those chameleons, and thinking it was drugged. Released it a few days later. My strongest memories are of the aromas of corny dogs and cotton candy.
Comments: Terry Turtle came from the state fair. I believe I won him while trying to score a chalk lamp or something. He'd turn up his little nose at turtle food, and that's when my aunt discovered he liked raw chicken. I hope he found plenty of fresh bugs in Five Mile Creek, where he belonged. BTW, the formatting on this GB seems to be messed up today. I tried to get into the GB website, but it's out of whack, too. It's probably run by some UT fans who are unhappy at the moment.
Comments: Those poor little turtles were Red Eared Sliders. We have them at the ranch and they are not itty bitty! They look to be about 8" round. At least you didn't feed it turtle food which was so horrible for them. Did you get yours at the Dime Store? That's where I remember them and their little plastic home with a plastic green palm tree or something. I'm glad you let yours go.
Comments: I had one of those little painted turtles. He lived several years in a little plastic aquarium thing in our kitchen. He would only eat dried flies and raw chicken. I picked all the remaining paint off him and turned him loose in Five Mile Creek. Turtles can carry horrible diseases, so I was one lucky kid -- and so was Terry the Turtle.
Comments: Oh, gosh, Charlotte. I had totally forgotten about those lizards. I have scads of them outside my house and while I know they can't hurt me, they sure make me hurt myself! Hope everyone has a great weekend. Hook 'em Horns!
Comments: What about those little Anole lizards tied with thread to a safety pin? My niece bought one and then had remorse. She asked me to take it. It lived in a terrarium in my second grade class room for three years. I took him home during the summers. We kept meal worms (eeeuuw) in a oatmeal in a Coffee can so we could feed him and we sprinkled the plants with water every day. What memories!
Comments: I haven't been down the Midway in forever. I do remember winning a baby duck at a booth where you threw little hoops over things. My mother almost had a fit when I brought it home. We took it to one of my cousin's who lived on a farm in east Texas and it actually lived there for 3 or 4 years until some critter got it. I bet they don't give little animals away any more.
Comments: Lots of Food, The Midway and Football Games at the Cotton Bowl. Thanks for the Memories.
Comments: Cynthia, actually "Old People's Day" as David and I call it is always a great day for the fair. We usually go on that day. David gets tickets through his company, so it used to tick him off when they waved us through because we -- ahem -- QUALIFY. Now we just give out tickets to some young'ns and enjoy the free pass. The air is much better today, thanks to the breeze, so next week is looking good! My first unsupervised trip to the fair was with Katherine Jennings. I walked toward her house, met her part way (8 blocks) and we caught the Ramona bus, then we transferred to another bus or street car. We both wore white tops and red corduroy pants that were way too warm. Her sweet mother admonished us to "You girls hold hands!" We were appalled. After all, we were 8th graders, not little kids. No cell phones, two bus rides to get there, a couple of miles walking unescorted, plus a day at the fair -- egad! And my mother wouldn't let me out of the house most of the time! I can't imagine a parent allowing that today. But we had a great time and came home with a giant bagful of brochures about expensive cars, a flip-book that showed how Servel refrigerators made ice, sponges that looked like paper till you put them into water, and a million applications for a free sewing machine. We rode the paddle boats on the lagoon, toured the art museum, ate cotton candy, and rode the Wild Mouse. Wish I had that kind of energy today.
Comments: First time I went to the Fair without adult supervision was in the 7th grade with my brother. We rode the big roll coaster for the first time. I could barely walk when we finished but geez that was fun. We did it several more times before the end of the day. We went on the bus as well and did just fine. Now if you are over 60 you get into the Fair for free on Thursdays. I am thinking about taking off on the 13th to join the Oak Cliff Boomers group out there. People from different HS around the OC area. Been fun to go to some of their activities.
Comments: I did that too Sharon! AND we usually dressed alike...haaaaaaaa!! Ouida probably remembers these fair days and who went better than I do. We wore matching blouses and Bermudas and Bermuda socks w/ black loafers.....haaaaaa! I just can't imagine letting preteens do that bus trip and stay all day at the fair today. WOW! Thanks for reminding us Sharon.
Comments: Two years ago, my oldest nephew who lives in New York decided he wanted his two daughters (ages 10 & 7 then) to see Texas. The oldest girl had been here a couple of times for a short visit, but always in the summer and the weather was miserable. The girls go to private school which has strange holidays, so they were out of school for a 4-day weekend in October. Being a UT grad, he got tickets for a football game in Austin and then drove to Dallas for the State Fair. They were immersed in Texas and loved every minute. I have no idea how many Fletcher's corny dogs they ate, but in almost every photo they are eating something! Steve said he wanted to go this year, but definitely not this Saturday. Do you all remember getting a day off from school to go to the Fair? In elementary school, two or three of us girls would go together. We'd ride a bus there and back and usually stay all day, and this was without adult supervision. Can you imagine letting a pre-teen child do that today.
Comments: Gosh, I haven't been to the state fair in too many years since we moved away from the D/FW area. I would love to go again sometime. I know it has changed so much. We go to the small county fairs around our ranch area. That is fun because we know the people who show their animals, plants, quilts and canned goods. Ginger, I'm glad you felt the support of your TX roots while you were here.
Comments: I am going to the fair next weekend, mt girlfriend and I go every year, but one because Debra had shoulder surgery. This year we have to go on the weekend unusually we go on Wednesday, take 3 cans of food and get in for $2. Debra and I eat from the time we enter the gates until the time we leave. We both just enjoy that time with each other, because neither husbands want to go, and do what we want to do.
Comments: My mother's funeral (Dorothy Hearn), was Wednesday at Laurel Land..and it was very nice. Betty Gibbs was there...Yay..! Also, Hillcrest Baptist Church was very well represented.. Several old friends. Truett Huffstutler, the former Music Education Director was there..He's 90, now. Ida Howell's daughter, Molly Henderson Boyd and many others. Ida Howell was the fantastic pianist at Hillcrest and she worked at Oak Cliff Music Co. on Jefferson. Grace Temple's former Music man, Vidal Jones' wife and widow, Winnie Jones,97, and their oldest daughter, Claudia Jones Swain, attended.. It really helped to communicate with HBC. and Claudia is on FB..with me. I'm in Ft. Worth till Saturday.. It's good to be back in Texas for a 'little bit'.. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.. Ginger Hearn
Comments: Has anybody been to the Fair? Every time I think about heading that way, the allergies get worse. We'll probably go next week. Any suggestions of what not to miss? I know we'll want to see the display of Texas artifacts at the Hall of State, and the bird show, of course.
