Comments: Mike & Lynell, Today's paper under "Today in History" it says "1916" the first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in Memphis TN by Clarence Saunders. Just thought you would like that little bit of history
Comments: Phyllis, On behalf of Karl, I thank you for remembering him on his birthday. I, too, remembered him. We do miss him but we have plenty of good times to remember about him. He is only gone physically, but he will always be here in our hearts.
Comments: Mike, nice to hear from you. I have a paper of sewing needles shaped like a pig, probably a giveaway with purchase at Piggly Wiggly in the Fifties.
Comments: One place that was not mentioned was a little Mom and Pop Grocery store on Saner, near Fernwood. That lady was so nice. BTW, the cool weather looks good for you guys. Enjoy. ![]()
Comments: Have not visited our site for a few weeks. My thoughts / prayers to the Green and Hearn families as well as others noted.
Comments:
Comments: Happy Late birthday to Ouida, wishing you a great year! However, Patricia Vessels birthday is the 8th, same day as Barbara Moffett's, but I am sure she loved the early birthday wish.
Comments: Happy Birthday Patricia Vessels this month! AND Happy Birthday Ouida Rose yesterday! Two great and beautiful gal friends!!
Comments: Phyllis, I'm sure Karl would be thrilled to be wished a happy birthday, and I'm happy to be reminded of him. So many of our classmates have gone on. If you haven't looked at the Memoriam page here at www.soc63.com, the list is shocking.
Comments: Oh, I am so sorry. I either didn't know -- or forgot -- about Karl's passing.
Comments: Sadly, Phyllis, we lost dear Karl a few years back. Sometimes Camille posts on this guestbook, and I know she'll be thrilled to see Karl's birthday remembered. He was a beloved and talented guy, that is for sure.
Comments: Happy Birthday, Karl Vinson. As the newest member of the Social Security Full Retirement Age Club -- I turned 66 yesterday, but can't afford to retire -- welcome to the Club!
Comments: We have been enjoying a great Elvis impersonator for several years that you should go see. He appears at Old Town Hamburgers every Wednesday night in Pantego which is surrounded by Arlington. Located near Bowen and Park Row, across from Aldi's. Carlton's website is www.thekingrocks.com . Carlton attended Oral Robert's University on a basketball scholarship. He is probably the tallest Elvis that you will every see. He has a fulltime job and performs his Elvis show weekly at Old Town and for parties. Channel 11 did a story on his Elvis birthday party this past January found on vlmeo.com/26681143 (if this does not work, then you can locate the link on Carlton's website) His show at Old Town Hamburgers is good, clean Christian fun. The cost for the show is a $2.00 admission. Lots of audience interaction. He tells cute corny jokes. He takes requests. We just saw his show again tonight. He had a raffle of an Elvis collectible. The food was great and it was an enjoyable 2 hours of fun. His website has examples of his shows. We saw another Elvis impersonator at a KLUV party a couple of years ago (Craig Parker?), who charges much more and we did not enjoy that show one tenth as much as Carlton's. We should get him to entertain for a SOC reunion.
Comments: My mother, Dorothy Hearn, was set to be released to return to the nursing home and rehabilitation center where she lives in Lewisville, yesterday. She had improved so much over this past week. She apparently, was so tired of the hospital life that she repeated several times.."I want to go home". Because of this Alzheimer 'disease/illness', she does not communicate much with words, anymore. She did express her desire to 'leave the hospital'.. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers for my mother. ![]()
Comments: Thank you, Cynthia. What sweet wishes. We have given up on the wealth part, but a nice rain would be lovely. Today is going to be about the temperature of our wedding day. David parked his car across the street to keep his cousins from messing with it. I remember walking across Hillcrest in my wedding dress and those extremely painful peau d'sois heels in the hot wind. I put my wedding shoes in the trashcan at the Hilton Inn on Mockingbird. ![]()
Comments: Have not been able to keep up with the site this week so the last post was in response to the top of page 2 Lynell - forgot I had gone to page 2 to catch up....duh.
Comments: I agree about the welcome home of yesteryear and today but I suspect that David had no complaints about his welcome. Hey, a married man 4 days later and look 42 years later he is still smiling and looking healthy! Hope your anniversary tomorrow will be blessed with all the desires of your heart - rain and wealth....and cooler weather!
Comments: Happy Birthday, Elaine!
Comments: I heard from Darla, and Jack Morrison is on the mend! I'd look for him to make the second half of the football season.

Comments: I hope Elaine tunes in here and sees our wishes! Happy Birthday Elaine! Where are you?
Comments: Happy birthday, Elaine! Sandy, you live in a cool city! What took you to Nashville?
Comments: Happy Birthday to Elaine Amos Gentry and many, many more.
Comments: Lynell, Johnny Crawford recently performed in the round at the legendary Bluebird Cafe...just down the street from where we live in Nashville. Unfortunately we didn't get to see him!
Comments: I remember Warren's. Wasn't it between the 7-11 and the cleaners. ah, that 7-11...it was run by 'Maricans...haaaaaaaaaaa!!
Comments: Meant to say would be envious.
Comments: Mr. Warren looks like a kindly soul, but intuition tells me that kid should pay and run. I also think Mrs. Warren had her hands full on several fronts. Dickey's Barbecue today has a frozen custard machine with cones in boxes exactly like those at the ice cream parlor. The cones are marvy, and I've gotten good at making professional-looking desserts there. Everybody's good at something. Maybe we should have a SOC luncheon at Dickey's. Barry, our wildlife/neighbors be envious of neon.
Comments: Here is a pic of Warren's Ice Cream Shop. His blue-eyed wife is standing at the far right. That is not his mean spirited daughter Paula. Looking at Mr. Warren you can almost see him thinking "... note to self ... FIRE Pelch". ![]()
Comments: Lynell: You're better off with your bike. The neon on Johnnies car would freak out the wildlife and the neighbors.
Comments: Bosko: You have to look at the BIG picture. I posted the link that I was sent. Some found it interesting. You could probably follow the lead of Bryan Adams HS and put together a web site of historical Oak Cliff photos which we would all love to see. Let me know when you get it put together and I'll post the link Grubbs |
