Comments: I hope Elaine tunes in here and sees our wishes! Happy Birthday Elaine! Where are you?
Comments: Happy birthday, Elaine! Sandy, you live in a cool city! What took you to Nashville?
Comments: Happy Birthday to Elaine Amos Gentry and many, many more.
Comments: Lynell, Johnny Crawford recently performed in the round at the legendary Bluebird Cafe...just down the street from where we live in Nashville. Unfortunately we didn't get to see him!
Comments: I remember Warren's. Wasn't it between the 7-11 and the cleaners. ah, that 7-11...it was run by 'Maricans...haaaaaaaaaaa!!
Comments: Meant to say would be envious.
Comments: Mr. Warren looks like a kindly soul, but intuition tells me that kid should pay and run. I also think Mrs. Warren had her hands full on several fronts. Dickey's Barbecue today has a frozen custard machine with cones in boxes exactly like those at the ice cream parlor. The cones are marvy, and I've gotten good at making professional-looking desserts there. Everybody's good at something. Maybe we should have a SOC luncheon at Dickey's. Barry, our wildlife/neighbors be envious of neon.
Comments: Here is a pic of Warren's Ice Cream Shop. His blue-eyed wife is standing at the far right. That is not his mean spirited daughter Paula. Looking at Mr. Warren you can almost see him thinking "... note to self ... FIRE Pelch". ![]()
Comments: Lynell: You're better off with your bike. The neon on Johnnies car would freak out the wildlife and the neighbors.
Comments: Bosko: You have to look at the BIG picture. I posted the link that I was sent. Some found it interesting. You could probably follow the lead of Bryan Adams HS and put together a web site of historical Oak Cliff photos which we would all love to see. Let me know when you get it put together and I'll post the link Grubbs
Comments: Here's a neat video of young Johnny Crawford. What a little cutie he was! (Thanks, Lonnie.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaF49sg3-oA&feature=related
Comments: Phil, I went to work at Warren's when I was sixteen. He was a tough employer. His wife, though, was very nice and had the prettiest blue eyes. They had a daughter (Paula) with a sulky attitude who would frequently come around the shop. She went to Kimball and was a year younger than us. Fast forward a few months ... I had the good fortune to get Dianna Cottle to go to the Hi-Vue Drive-in theater with me one night. The very next day Suanne (my Kimball girlfriend) called me and read me the riot act. Somehow she found out I was out with another girl. Turns out that dreadful Paula had spotted me there and ratted me out! I didn't last long in the Ice Cream industry and moved on to my dream job as a sacker at the Safeway at Saner & Marsalis. There I pined away the next year and a half over a lanky cashier named Betty Lou who was 8 years older and had no trouble resisting my amorous advances.
Comments: JS your leaked video of Burning Man reminds me of a wilder Montrose Art Car parade and setting 'Big Tex' on fire
Comments: My bad! It was Warren's Ice Cream. How could I forget someone who fired me. Yes, the girl was under age
Comments: JS, you're welcome to take my bike. It's red and has coaster brakes. Leave me your Miata. Or maybe you could start a SOC Burning Man event. I think we're a unique bunch. Think about it.
Comments: Do any of you own an RV? If so, it isn't too late for a group of us to jump in and head for the 2011 Burning Man event in Nevada. It kicks off tomorrow. This year's theme is "Rites of Passage" (we've seen plenty of those, haven't we). This is still on my bucket list. Here is a video of last year's colorful shindig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GadFXd27aE&feature=related
Comments: Phil, was that Warren's Ice Cream? I heard a rumor he was a Dirty Old Man. There were plenty of them around.
Comments: How sad to hear about Mary Irene's brother, Bedford. My wish is that he and his loved ones find peace and comfort. Cynthia, thank you for your sweet wishes. Actually, it's gonna be 42 years for us on the 31st. David got back from Vietnam 42 years ago today, and amazingly I got off work to pick him up at Love Field. I didn't recognize him at first because of his extreme tan and weight loss from a year of C-rations. Four days later he had a wife. Talk about a culture shock. Vietnam vets got a different welcome home than the vets of today. Today is better, although he was happy to see me.
Comments: I worked at the Ice Cream store in Glendale. It was Robbin's Ice Cream no relation to Baskin and Robbins. He hired me at age 15 and paid .65 cents an hour. Believe it or not I was fired, I was naive and I saw him with a young girl and made an' innocent 'remark to his wife. Next thing, I was unemployed and went to work across the street at Piggly Wiggly and got a raise to. 85 cents per hour!
Comments: Mary McCord Bach just called me and Bedford (her brother) is having convulsions and has been on hospice for two days. As some of you know, he has been very ill for a long time. Mary asked that I post this on Facebook and the '63 website and ask for prayers for Bedford. She is planning to go see him in North Carolina but doesn't know when yet. I'm checking flights for her and availability doesn't look good.
Comments: OOOOOPS 42 years....only 8 more to go to the Golden! I was guessing and then read your message again.....lol.
Comments: Not to change the subject but since my memory is not so great anymore - Happy Anniversary - Lynell and David on Wednesday! Is this 45 for you? Blessings and many more great years ahead for you both.
Comments: Lynell, they also did mine and my sister's wedding cake. My Dad was there very first customer when they first opened. Nicest family that owned it. I still miss their cakes and breads
Comments: Hey, that cake in MacArthur Park melted from the rain! Anybody remember rain?
Comments: Diane, Jan's Bakery did my wedding cake for a much more reasonable price than a North Dallas bakery. We got married on a shoestring budget. I remember picking the cake up in my un-air conditioned VW with my hair in curlers the morning of August 31, 1969. I sped across town before the cake melted like the one in MacArthur's Park.
Comments: Goff's burgers, Jan's Bakery in Wynnewood and Wee St. Andrews Minature Golf.
Comments: Cliff Temple Baptist Church...baccalaureate!
Comments: Cynthia, was that dime store Duke & Ayres?
Comments: That was the Glendale Ice Cream Shop....I think there was a barber shop and beauty shop there as well and a 5 and Dime Store and the Pharmacy. |
