Please don't think this is out of line.  I'd like to have contact information for someone in the SOC Class of 63 to provide to one of my daughters/sons to advise you  IF I pass.  I'm not sick but have had four stents so one never knows.  I'd like to make my classmates aware if something happens.  Perhaps a good email address or phone number.  Please send via my email address, peterssloan@gmail.com.  Thanks all.  Mike

Starnes, Glen Byron - obit

Glen Byron Starnes

August 21, 1945 - March 3, 2022

Glen Byron Starnes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend entered the gates of Heaven on March 3, 2022 at the age of 76.  Glen shared his final breaths surrounded in love with his wife Kathryn and his daughters, Robin and Amy, by his side after boldly battling several months of illness with lung and heart issues.

Glen was born August 21, 1945, at Methodist Hospital Dallas, TX. He was the 4th of 6 children, and the first one to be born in a hospital. He graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, TX where he enjoyed some of the happiest times of his life playing football for the Golden Bears.  Glen proudly served four years in the United States Air Force from 1969-1972 and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He continued his education at Texas A&M Commerce where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology.  Glen was always finding ways to nurture others and was authorized and licensed in the State of Texas as a Professional Counselor – maintaining his active license every year since 1983.

Glen was born with a very special God given spirit that prevailed with him throughout his life. He read the entire Bible straight through 33 times – finishing the most recent reading on his great grandson Gentry’s first birthday in January 2021. Glen always said, “you need to know the textbook when you get to heaven”.  He loved the Lord fiercely. His faith was integral as the center-point of his life, and he was devoted to enriching the spiritual lives of his family.

Glen’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with Kathryn, his “sweet angel” and beloved wife of over 38 years. They spent a great deal of time immersing themselves in the great outdoors hunting, fishing, and camping across the great state of Texas and throughout the Southwest. Their shared love for nature led to creating their very own backyard sanctuary earning the designation of a “certified wildlife habitat” where they enjoyed countless hours sipping vino, smoking briskets, and cherishing each other’s conversations.

One of Glen’s utmost sources of joy came from his role as “Daddy” to his two daughters, Robin Brown and Amy Starnes. He is described by his “girls” as their steadfast protector, source of comfort, and forever their safe place to fall. His example of love, strength, and devotion shaped his girl’s ability to extend the same type of comfort to their Daddy in his final days, when he needed it most.

Glen is survived by an adoring family including his wife Kathryn of Garland, TX; Daughters - Robin Brown and husband Matt Brown of Mckinney, TX and Amy Starnes of Mead, CO;  Stepsons – Troy Prestenberg and wife Kim of Garland, TX and Matt Prestenberg and wife Cara of Sachse, TX; Grandsons - Chase Sasiain of Dallas, TX and Trevor Stacy and wife Shelby and great grandson Gentry of Rayne, LA;  Michael, Johnathon, David and Joshua Prestenberg of Garland, TX; Granddaughters - Skyler Rountree of Plano, TX; Lani Stacy of Austin, TX; Scarlett, Stella, and Sophia Prestenberg of Sachse, TX.

Brothers – Walter “Buddy” Starnes and wife Delores of Tyler, TX, Curtis Ray Starnes and wife Nancy of Rockwall, TX, Clifton Starnes and wife Diane of Farmers Branch, TX;  sister - Patty Healey and husband Alan of Hideaway Lake, TX;  along with a long host of other loving family and friends.  Glen is preceded in death by his parents Evelyn and Walter Arther Starnes and his older sister Elaine Day and her husband Ben Day.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2022 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. A visitation will be held 1 hour prior at the funeral home.

Following the service, a lunch reception for friends and family will be held at Tucker Hill Community Clubhouse, 2100 State Boulevard McKinney, Texas 75071.

A private family interment will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in Glen’s honor to the First Baptist Church Dallas, 1707 San Jacinto Street Dallas, TX 75201

Like others I am saddened by the passing of any member of the SOC Class of 1963. If my counting is accurate, we have lost over 25% of our graduating class. It may be higher than that because there are still quite a few that we have lost track of.

I first met Celi when my family moved from an unincorporated area of Dallas County to a home just behind Clinton P. Russell school. That was 1953 and we were entering the 3rd grade.

I (as will so many of you) will always remember Rodger for Motorcyclegate on Senior Day in 1963. But in the past decades I will also remember his grin, and his answer to the question, "Rodger, how are you?" His response was always the same. "I AM BLESSED."

Staggering news to learn of the passing of Celi and now Rodger. Rodger would go out of his way to get a smile out of you with his corny humor. I don't know the details but heard that both had numerous health issues in recent years. Must have been quite rough for them.

Sorry to hear about Celi and Rodger.  Every time I hear of a classmate passing a flood of memories hit me.  So many memories of Rodger are coming back, all good and bring a chuckle and a smile.  We had some good times.

Rodger Davis has passed away. Peaches will post more in a few days. Meanwhile, I envision young Rodger on his bike, revving the engine at heaven‘s door. May he rest in eternal peace and always keep that twinkle in his eye.

Hi, Mike Peters,

Nice to see your post! The link didn’t come through, so here’s how it’s done: when you’re creating a post, see the two rows of icons above your text. The bottom row third icon from the left will give you a pop up window where you can add a link.

You‘re so right. By this age most of us have survived one thing or another. Some have survived more than their share!

This evening Fox 4 News had a story about the 1964 Golden Pheasant Restaurant fire in downtown Dallas. Dorothy Shamblin Averitte’s husband Bob was a young firefighter on the job that night. He had a nice TV interview. Four firefighters lost their lives in that fire.

Since we all lived in the era of Vietnam, I found this story of SSG Barry Sadler who sang the song, Ballad of the Green Beret.

I don't know if we are allowed to add links in our guestbook but this video (on Youtube) is very interesting and brings back memories, both good and bad.  Hope it is okay.

We all are surviors in our own way and I appreciate all the experiences we have had over the years.

I’m sad to report to the Class of ‘63 that one of our own has passed away. Celi Lowrance Hamilton left this world earlier today. I don’t know any details, but I feel sure MaryKay crowder will keep us posted. Celi was a sweet, kindhearted person who will be missed.

The sun looks so nice this morning!

Donna and I got through icemaggedon with no damage to bodies, dwelling or vehicles. I attribute that to the fact that we stayed in our jammies all day Wednesday and Thursday.

We buried my 97-year-old aunt on Tuesday in East Texas but the weather was nice that day. And, I got to visit with a few cousins that I haven't seen in quite a few years.

I hope everyone else escaped the storm unscathed.

Barry, Best wishes. good news that you feel good.
You know the ‘ol saying. “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait a minute”.  That seems to be what is happening to my area also. Freezing temps then warm again. I had little wildflowers blooming before the last freeze. Plants are very confused along with butterflies. ……and I am too as to what to wear each day. Haaaa.

I’m just thinking about our ages……hard to believe to me. I’m just happy to have another year, but , Oh, the aches and pains come along with those years now.

Belated best wishes for the Holidays.  I'll be glad when the weather makes up its mind-cold one day wind from the north, warm the next day with strong south wind. Before long it will be hot all the time and I'll be longing for cooler weather.  I just wish we could get some rain!
I'm still getting stuck with needles and taking some unbeliebably expensive cancer pills.  I'm just glad that Joan has good health insurance.  Without it, these pills would be $30,000 a month.  With insurance, the copay is only $85.
I'm feeling as good as a 77 yr old overweight guy has a right to feel and we feel blessed.  In a few weeks, we plan to visit the Gulf coast for a couple of weeks and might even go fishing!
Take care and you guys are in my thoughts and prayers every day.

Hey all,
yes, I lived on Vanette lane and so did Karen Jones, Ginger
Hearn, Clyde Aiklen (probably spelled Clyde's last name
wrong) and Sherry Locke. Maybe a few more.
I've seen some houses for sale on
Vanette Lane for 7 times what we paid for ours. It was a nice street with pretty trees etc.
BY THE WAY, i hate what they've done to South Oak Cliff school.
I watched the football game. Good for them. But, I do not consider it my high school anymore. Ours is gone.
