Cousin Sammy, don't be pointin' the finger only at the Dems. Neither party emerged from this tomfoolery with anything to be proud of. All both parties did was illuminate what a shakey financial foundation the United States now has.

Neither group "fixed" anything. They just delayed dealing with it rather than face or make the hard changes that need to take place. I think there are more aftershocks coming our way.

Uh! Oh! It didn't take Barry O very long to get right back to some of his favorite phrases of the week "balanced approach" (translation: more taxes), and everyone paying their "fair share" (translation: wants more taxing on the "millionaires and billionaires"). Yep, at his look what I accomplished news conference awhile ago, just after the Senate voted approval of the Debt Reduction Bill, he was politicallly planting the seeds for more spending cash and higher paying taxpayers. Must just be inbred in those Dems.

Had to comment on Charlotte's reference to the Golden Oldies now including 60's music.  When our kids reach 65, Rap Music will be their golden oldies.  OMG.

Probably any song that we can understand the words to is an oldie. And with todays "music" we are better off NOT understanding the words!!

Charlotte, any song I can remember the words to is officially an Oldie.

I agree with you Sharon.  I think the media just needs fillers so they dip into trivia!

It is a sad day when I am listening to Golden Oldies on Comcast radio and the 60's are included the oldies now!!!!!  WHOA!

After 40 years, are we really going to find out what happened to D B Cooper?  I think they're just toying with us.

TNX JS, I didn't realize you could still get your SS via mail, although that is abt to stop.  Sorry about those darn homeless neighbors gettin' in your mailbox . . . better be even more careful if you go with the debit cd.  Those things have several drawbacks.

Homeless Neighbors!!???    Yeah, right!

I have always wondered about the maximum monthly benefit that people receive from their Social Security check. Does anyone know? After asking some people, it seems a lot of people fall into the $700 to $2200 range. I realize that it is based on how much you pay in, but is there a cut off point? I also have read that you can draw your SS and continue working. When you finally do retire you can go back and have them refigure your income. Is this true?

I do get my SS by direct deposit, but prior to May of this year you still had the option of receiving it by a mailed check. Now it must be by DD.

Sandy, Bill probably receives his SS check by direct deposit, but Dru and I are amongst those to poor and low-tech to have a checking account - so ours still arrives by mail, as does 15 percent of the population.

However a new requirement that went into effect May 1st will force us to acquire a government Debit Card by 2013. It might be a good thing, since the homeless folks on the next alley over keep getting into our mailbox.

Bill - JS, I hate to correct ya'll and especially Mr. POTUS, but SS cks haven't been mailed in yrs!  They are EFT'd (electronic fund transferred) into your acct.  My husband's arrives in our acct every 4th Wed.

Not much on TV this afternoon so I found myself strangely drawn to a 90 minute show, recorded in 1976, on KERA. It was an old Austin City Limits show with my old childhood friend Michael Martin Murphey.

I wonder if the dedication he made to "my old friend John" could possibly be Southworth?

Yea, JS, you'd think that POTUS (or at least one of his "crack" advisers) would know that SS checks have been mailed, to be received, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. It's only been that way since April 1997.

I'm hoping those clowns on both sides of the aisle hurry up and finish playing "kick the can (on down the road)" so's Obama can get all them Social Security checks in the mail on August 3rd.

(Usually, I don't get mine til the 4th Wednesday of the month, so this'll be a special treat)

It looks like we are going to solve our debt ceiling problem. It bothers me that Boehner and McConnell seem so happy: that may not bode well for the American people, since cuts in urgently needed services may be on the way.

I received a little more information on Jimmy Lemmon.  They will have his services Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Cisco, Texas (near Abilene), as the women of the church wanted to provide a meal for the family, then afterwards they will spread his ashes.  Michael did not give a specific time, but I am sure the church would know.  If I hear any further info, I will pass it on.

I received this note from Michael Lemmon, Jimmy's brother:

Tanya, he died Tuesday morning. He slipped and fell in the night, hit his head and died before paramedics got there. As for as a service, he is being cremated and we will hold a memorial service in a couple of weeks. Some family memebrs are out of town. Thanks for your thoughts. I will update you when I know the details.

I learned today that Jimmy Lemmon has passed away. I've posted on the '64 site. We don't know any details. If someone here learns of anything, please let us know. We're sad to hear of losing another classmate.

Hope everyone is doing well. Stay cool. I'm personally anticipating the first "cold snap" as my mother always says.

Regarding the Norway massacres, I, too, was shocked to hear about the 21 year maximum, but also read that if someone is deemed too dangerous to release, they can somehow add recurring 20 year terms.  It's surprising, too, that Norwegian police do not carry firearms, although this terrible case may lead to a change in that policy.  I'm glad we grew up when we did; now, children are exposed to so much more hatred and violence.  Not that human nature has worsened, but instructions on creating a bomb out of fertilizer and fuel were not readily available, and few had access to high-powered weapons.

We spent Friday night without AC as the blower went out. We opened windows and have ceiling fans. it was tough. The AC was fixed Sat afternoon, had it not been fixed it was going to be Motel 6, and Tom Bodette better have left the AC on!

Spent a night in my mother's home a few days ago. There are 3 window units. House had been closed for several days and was a like an oven...took until the next day to even approach "comfortable". Have developed a head cold probably from sleeping with the a/c pointed directly on me. Was still a fitful night. My old bedroom does NOT have an a/c unit in it. How did I survive when I lived at home?? Before my folks got the window units, the only a/c was an evaporative cooler which was placed in the master bedroom window. Yep, older now & I don't tolerate the heat very well at all.

I've been following the case of the Norway massacre and was surprised to learn:

1. There is NO death penalty in Norway, and

2. The maximum sentence for ANY crime there is 21 years.

Maybe they should extradite Anders (no, not HER ... the bad guy) to Texas and try him before a Texas jury.
