Comments: I had a great time at the luncheon Sat!! Great seeing so many friends at once! That waitress we had was great! Best service ever. Last night I took a peak at FB & saw some of the pics. Some good pics, but what's with all the blurry pics??? Some of you may need to cut back on the coffee!! Now I'm going to peruse Lynell's posted pics so I can see all of them. Those of you who didn't come . . . you missed a really good one!
Comments: Our of curiosity I tuned into The Real L Word on Showtime...uh, why do they all have so many piercings and most are covered in tattoos???? And why are they filming them only in LA and NYC?
Comments: Thanks to Cynthia, we now have lots more pictures on the Images page. Hers start right after my picture of Peaches with the bars on each side. Don't forget, you can see a slideshow if you push the button, top right, after you get to that Smugmug page. If you see some that you want to order for your living room (or garden) you can do that with Smugmug. Cynthia, you took some good 'uns! Thank you.
Comments: By the way Lynell - you got some great shots that captured the fun including the excitement of arriving - look at Lonnie and Fred quickly heading for the fun - great idea Lynell.
Comments: Lynell - just sent you a ton of photos. You likely will want to edit as some may be repetitive like when Lonnie kept saying take another one, take another one, take another - that sneaky guy. The photos on FB came out good but I had a blurred one or two as well so you are not alone. Thanks for sharing.
Comments: It was great to see Kerry Norman for the first time since 1963! His daughter Charity is such a sweetie. She better look out or the class will adopt her. Cynthia, obviously some shaky old person grabbed my camera and took pictures of you. I hope when you have time, you and Lonnie will send me some pictures from yesterday, especially of everyone I missed. Wow, it's gonna be hot afternoon in Big D.
Comments: Glad I went to the luncheon. This was my first one to make but will try to not let it be the last. You guys made my daughter Charity feel very welcome. She said everyone was very friendly. Thank you guys.

Comments: Loved seeing everyone! You must have had a great time. AND, my eyes say y'all look great! Janelle, I know your class was gone when Butch was thinking with his little brain. I know it takes two, but after all, the girl...yes, GIRL was 18....AND his student. He married her to give the child a name, but, well, pullllleeeez! Sorry to burst your bubble about your brother's friend but it is the truth. Feisty is a nice way to put the way I behave..............haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Comments: Charlotte, perhaps I over reacted just a bit. I know nothing about what you are referring to. I only know him as a fun neighbor who lived down the street from us. Those days are about the only sweet memories I have of growing up and relish them. While I don't "stoop," I do have a stiff neck (should see me backing up the car), fake knee and a 3-rotator-cuff-surgery right arm. My apologizes - you can never take the "feistiness" out of a Texan. ha.
Comments: Speaking of failing vision, we both need to use larger fonts!
Comments: Bill, you and Donna look better with age, just like moi. Failing vision has nothing to do with it, I feel sure.
Comments: Great job, Leftnell. At least you good one good pix of me. It's amazing how much better I look as time goes by!!!
Comments: Miss Betty (Boop) Gibbs outdid herself, which is hard for her to do, by finding Jake's in Addison for today's SOC luncheon. The ambiance, burgers, drink, parking and last but far from least, service, were all beyond reproach. And a heads up to you truant boys, those waitresses were skimpily clad. Before you read further, my apologies to everyone I missed taking pictures of. This was '63er Kerry Norman's first EVER luncheon. His darling daughter drove him. There is a lot to be said for daughters. His is sweet, cute and nice. WTG Kerrymeister! If you want to see my pictures, look on the Images Page. I know I missed some people. Like Cynthia, Judy B., and I know there are others . Geez, I am so not a photographer. Missed Larry Perry, too, though there are lots of pictures of his back. Oh, well, those '62 boys look good from all angles. Before anyone hollers at me for not putting names on the pictures, I have run out of steam. I may add them in a day or two, should I rally. Because of my recent computer crash, it took a long time to figure out how to download pix. It was terrific to see everyone. If you were not there, we talked about you. Heh heh. Show up next time so you can defend yourself. This means you, JS.Cyn and Lonstar, please send any photos you'd like published here to me. I hope you two covered everyone my addlepatedness caused me to miss.
Comments: Janelle, maybe I was a little harsh. In today's world, Butch would have served a little jail time or been fired or the very least, have a ruined reputation. He was sexually involved with one of his students and in my opinion doesn't deserve much respect. In his video he says teachers see the kids more than anyone and have influence over them...ahem! He is right.....this video would not have happened if he had been reprimanded as he should have been. I also think that the now Mrs Arnold was reprimanded for camaraderie with young boys at SOC too. So the Arnolds found each other. Karen's son is very talented and I am glad to get to see his work in that video. I know she is so proud of him. BTW I have many miles on me too and stoop!
Comments: Took another look at one tub. it seems kinda gritty. I hope this project doesn't turn into a nightmare.
Comments: I'm sure Butch Arnold would be somewhat offended by comments like "having a few miles on him" and how he now "stoops." I personally was thrilled just to see him again. I would have recognized that face anywhere. Butch lived down the street from us on Terrace Drive when I was just a youngster. He and my brother were very good friends. I can still recall walking up the steps to his front door. He was always very kind.
Comments: Sandy, I'll take credit whether I deserve it or not. Phyllis is the one. Hope to see you tomorrow at Jakes for the SOC luncheon. It's 90 degrees in the house. We have the windows open to dissipate the aroma of bathtub paint. Don't do this in the summertime, that's my advice. Reminds me of early childhood, minus the youthful knees, etc., etc., etc. The tubs look beeyoutiful! ![]()
Comments: Lynell - that's a really neat article about Chris Arnold. Hope you don't mind, I posted the link on our '66 site too. But I gave you credit.
Comments: My family and our neighbors had the same policy about never darkening the door of Herman's Hardware. You're right, Jack. I remember toilets and sinks outside the front door. Tacky! I guess it was a "special coffee" emporium. I also heard that it was a gambling place.
Comments: Lynell, was that the place that had all the plumbing supplies out in front? I was never in there. My Dad told me NEVER to shop for anything there. Never explained why, just I was not to go there. Someone told me later that it was a bootlegger's place. That would explain my Granddad's visits. He was known to have a sip or three in the afternoon. Pop walked everywhere and I saw him a couple of times lingering in that area.
Comments: Herman's Hardware on So. Lancaster at Kiest Blvd. had a similar reputation to that of the Far East Cafe. Herman closed Sundays, but cars jammed into the parking spots near there in the afternoon. I always wondered what was up with that, but figured the adults were inside enjoying "special coffee."
Comments: WOW, I am so impressed and found that artile so interesting. I recognized all the murals. Thanks so much you two for sharing.
Comments: This is a link to the story in D Magazine about Karen and Butch's son, Chris. Thanks for this info, Phyllis. http://www.dmagazine.com/Home/D_Magazine/2010/May/The_Biggest_Muralists_of_Dallas.aspx
Comments: Thanks for the memories, Barry. The Chinese Restaurant, the Far East Cafe, was classic. It was so old, there were still signs on the wall from when Oak Cliff was Wet. We frequented it often; other customers were rare. Occasionally, someone would come in, whisper something to the waitress -- also a holdover from the 50's -- then leave with a mysterious package that looked nothing like Chinese take-out; once, it was a pillow. We were convinced they were selling drugs. Wong, the ancient cook, constantly watched Channel 13. The food was awesome. The noodle company that was next door is now on W Commerce near Vilbig. I didn't know Butch had remarried. I knew Karen (Dollar) had -- since she became Karen Dollar White -- but hadn't heard about Butch. Karen and Butch's son, Chris, is an artist and created some of the murals on the sides of buildings downtown, like the little boy pulling the wagon.
Comments: When we took pictures of the ice skating club for the Den, we broke the club up into little groups of a few people. I remember thinking, "I could swear Karl was in the first group." If you look through the '63 Den, ice skating club, you'll see that Karl cloned himself and was in more than one group. What a funny guy. Camille, I'm sure there was never a dull moment.
Comments: Thank you Barry for the memories of Karl. Wasn't sure I was going to be able to stop laughing. He and his brothers were always pulling pranks throughout his life. Not sure he ever really grew up. He had that "kid" in him that I think we all would like to let out sometime.
Comments: Barry, I guess we had some swingin' teachers. I think several of them might have been incarcerated in today's world. Happy birthday, Marilyn. What a life that girl must have led. Too bad it ended before she figured it out. I have towels stashed away that are older than she lived to be. Bless her heart.
Comments: Marilyn Monroe would have been 85 today. Happy Birthday Marilyn!
Comments: Another Cushman Eagle story: I would often give Karl Vinson a ride to football practice in the summer before school started. One day we got stopped for speeding. Much to my surprise, Karl pretended to be deaf. The cop would ask him a question and Karl would just point at his ears and mouth and shake his head "No". It was all I could do to keep a straight face, but I did. The cop didn't write me a ticket because I was doing a good deed for the deaf kid. I'll never forget that day or Karl. He was a super guy. |
