Lynelle:  Don't feel guilty about the cat tree.  One of my neighbors has one cat and he has his own room.  The first time I saw it, I really couldn't believe it.  I mean it had everything possible for a cat to play with.  Just a tad strange.

No doubt that wedding veil mad you all that much cuter.  It sure made me smile thinking about you running around the house all day with it.

I have a few closets - okay a whole house - that could use that cleaning action if you have nothing more on your agenda.  Enjoy your day off tomorrow after all the work you and David did today.

CUTE??  Cynthia said I was cute, so I hope everybody remembers that. haaaa.  I looked through my '63 Den today and remembered that cutie-pie Cynthia was also a Clinic Helper.  Wanna bet her reasons were loftier than mine?  The clinic was air conditioned!!  Study halls were not.  Nothing humanitarian for Miss Garrett there.

We cleaned out two closets today and parted with such treasures as a three-piece avocado green Samsonite luggage set, my hard hair dryer, and many electric blankets. All that stuff went to the Goodwill collection center. Well, I found my bridal veil but didn't add it to the donation pile.  I wore it most of the afternoon.

Then we went to PetSmart and bought a second cat tree. I know they're ugly and they take up room, but the kitties love them.  Now each has his own tree and our chance of being reviewed in Architectural Digest moved several notches down the list.

Tomorrow will be a day off.  We have enjoyed this wonderful weekend thanks to those who gave their lives for America, so thank you to all veterans.  I hope everyone will look at the Memoriam page on www.soc63.com and click to see those SOCites who gave all for us. The link is near the top of the page.

Sounds like an early death to me Lynell.  Not only would you have to run for your life but you would have to hold up your pants to do this these days....

I hope to see Mary at the luncheon Betty is sponsoring next weekend so you may have a chance to deliver the message in person.  I think you may have gotten me confused with Betty but what a great state to be in when you have such a wonderful person as Betty to be confused with - be still my soul.  Lynell you are just so cute.

Cynthia, please let Mary know that Bedford doesn't deserve such a plight, but that everyone is pulling for him.

Claudia, that event sounds cool. When you say "Serve up the oldies," do you mean someone's going to bring my food and drink to me?

I hope everyone's Memorial Day weekend is going well.  Remember when this was close to the last day of school?  What an exciting time, with the blissful summer stretched ahead. I had no clue what the holiday was intended to commemorate, but I didn't have a clue about a lot of things.

Yesterday I got involved in a horde of police cruisers. They were in front of the DISD high school near our house. School had let out. The cops slowed traffic to a crawl because students were in the street, not on the sidewalk. No girls seemed to be present. (Can't say I blame them.) Did not see any incidents, but it was good to know the Dallas police were ready. I wonder what these young adults think traffic in "the real world" will do when they opt to stroll into the street to show off their undies without police support.

Can you imagine walking into Marsalis or Overton oblivious to vehicular traffic in 1963?

I think we all agree that the death of long-time friends and classmates is so very difficult. Happy many of you were able to attend Henry and Mary's services. It brings such joy to the family to see the outpouring of love.

Mary McCord Bach asked that I post on several places the update on her brother, Bedford. He is now bedridden and requiring 24-hr care. The family is with him constantly, holding on in faith. His birthday is June 1st and it would be so nice if he received cards and best wishes from SOC friends. Here's his address:
Bedford McCord
5719 Wake Forest Hwy Durham, NC 27703

Mary Gene's sweet mother was at the service this afternoon, as were her wonderful family members.  The flowers and music were beautiful, and her brother delivered a personal and meaningful talk about his sister.  May she rest in peace.

Peaches and I agreed that we hope the next time she and I meet, it'll be happier circumstances.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of two of our wonderful classmates.  Mary Gene's mother was my principal when I first started teaching school at Anson Jones Elementary.  She was an excellent leader.  I wish I could be there to give her a hug and my best regards.

Henry was a great guy in school and turned into a wonderful man who adored his family.  About five years ago, I had the privilege of seeing and visiting with him when I replaced my carpeting.  He was the same terrific person I had always remembered.  He spoke so highly of his wife and kids...just so sad that he is gone.

I wish that I could have attended both of their services.  So glad that Peaches, Lynell, Claudia gave a report on Henry's.  Thanks so much.

Oh my.  Mary Gene and I were at Cliff Temple together.  Her parents were very active in that church and Mary Gene and I were in GAs and choir together.  I am saddened to learn of her death.  I will pray for her loved ones.  Does anyone know where her mother is?  She must be around 88 or 89 now.

Vick was sitting about 3-4 rows in front of us Claudia. I do not think he would even remember me. I recognized him when he got up to take Communion. Claudia and I went to lunch at Gordos and had a very nice visit. I had cancelled a doctor's appointment to go to the Memorial and had rescheduled it for afternoon. As much as I dread going to these I am always glad I went. It means alot to the familes, believe me, I know. I will  never forget my SOC friends who came to Billy's Memorial Service 29 years ago.

Lynelle, I wish I had seen you there and would love to have seen Vick...we lived in the same neighborhood when we were in elementary school...man, that was long ago!  I sometimes think "how sad" when we lose one of our own, and it seems we discuss the gathering in their honor as if it were a social event.  Those who pass on, who are common in our lives bring us together to celebrate their legacy, so maybe it is a social event...just more somber in nature than lunches, dinners, reunions and other gatherings!

Here goes....

Henry could best be described as a gentle giant; courageous and tough yet tender at heart. He was also fiercely loyal to his family. You could be dealt with harshly if you ever crossed someone he cared about; particularly his grandchildren. Henry might recognize the shortcomings of family and friends but always stopped short of passing judgement.
Henry attended South Oak Cliff High School - Class of 63. He played football at East Texas State and Texas A&M. He proudly served as a member of the armed forces in Vietnam.
To say that Henry loved to cook BBQ was an understatement. In 2009, he brought together a group of friends called the "GPS" (Gravel Pit Society) and spent long lazy weekends smoking and grilling meat. He was passionate about his Aggies and Mavericks and tolerated many a longhorn game with his children.
In August 2010, a charity golf tournament was held at Prestonwod County Club in his honor. It was a testament of what wonderful friends he had. He was after all....a guy's guy.
I hope all of us remember Henry actively doing what he loved...playing golf, commanding the grill, and bellying up to the 19th Hole round table with his buddies. As Laura likes to say...this is not Goodbye...just "bye for now".
His Family.

I wanted to share this with his SOC friends as most of us have not seen him for years.

Henry's service was packed as Lynell stated. There was about 10 or more people standing in the back. Claudia Kenngott Bevill and I sat together. Lynell, sorry i did not see you. The music was fantastic!!! I spoke briefly to Kelly after the service and introduced myself. She is an absolutely beautiful tall blonde. I will write tomorrow from his page that described Henry. I am now putting blanket, pillow, flashlight and radio in my utility room just in case of tornado. And I MUST go watch Dancing with the Stars.

I played basketball in the 7th grade at Clinton P. Russell. Since most elementary schools only had six grades we had to played 7th grade teams from the Junior highs. When we played Boude Storey I had to defend Henry since I was the tallest guy on our team. He was about a foot taller than me and was impossible to stop.

On one play he and I got our legs tangled going for a rebound and both fell to the court. Henry landed on my right hand and broke my index finger ending my season.

After I got to Storey Henry told me on several occasions how sorry he was that I got hurt. He was a super nice guy, and will be missed by many friends as well as his family.

I knew Henry as a schoolmate, always so nice and such a gentleman. Who at Boude Storey and SOC could forget seeing him approaching from down the hall, a head taller than most of the boys (and some of us girls.)  I plan to attend his memorial tomorrow.

Many times I asked Henry 'how's the weather up there'?
One time, after asking the question, I felt 2 large hands lift me up and there we were eye to eye and he asked, 'how is it on Mt. Coomes'? I responded, 'sunny/warm with unlimited visibility'.
In so many games, Henry would say, 'hold on, follow me we're going for a ride'. And I held on, we went for a ride, most always successful, due to his efforts and we laughted later.
Now, with all respect, God has a good right tackel and an outstanding man on his team. He is missed.
I learned last night from my brothers Bill and Al. They will attend
the services Tuesday. I can not. Please, pass all my love to Mary, his family and to all of you..

Thank you for sharing that...what you are involved in is quite impressive and I know it must be so gratifying to support our warriors who have suffered for freedom.  To be there in person must be a thrill and a heart ache at the same time to see a few of the many who have given so much.  And, now, I realize how many there must be.
