The Cushman Eagle brings back a lot of memories, as well.  If you went to Zumwalt, you probably remember Miss Mathis.  She was fresh out of school and we thought she was hot for an "older" woman.  Don Chapman and I had tried several times to get her to go for a ride on our scooters. We both had her for English.  One day Don was somewhere else and I thought "here's my chance".  I asked her to go for a ride and SHE ACCEPTED!  I don't remember where we went, but she burned her leg on one of the exhaust pipes.  That was MY MARK and I made sure that I pointed it out to Don every chance I got.  It took a long time for it to heal and she never went for another ride with me.

Dee Schmeltekopf!  That brings back memories.  I never had her for a teacher, but my best friend at the time, Jay Kralik, did.  Dee would be fired today, but a group of us used to go over to her apartment on the weekend and hang out around Lake Cliff Park.  There was a Chinese Restaurant on Zangs just before it crossed the river that we frequented.  Everything was always on the up and up, but can you imagine a teacher today having 3-4 teenage boy students at her apartment at night? We never spent all night, but there were numerous times that we were at Lake Cliff Park in the wee hours of the morning.  I told my parents that I was staying at Jay's house and I don't know what story he used-I guess he was at my house.  I think this happened the last half of our senior year.  There was a certain excitement about doing something we knew we shouldn't be doing, even if it was on the up and up.  This is the first I have heard of her since graduation.

Speaking of legacies of the past, how many of you remember the legendary Cushman Eagle scooter? This old photo brings back memories of the days at Zumwalt and the likes of Don Chapman, Danny Mooneyham, Ray Fox, Barry Gibbs, and Gary Strzinek.

FYI, there is still time to book a room in Paris, TX, for the annual state-wide Texas Cushman Club meet on June 22nd!

You have a keen eye, Mr. Haas! I'll have to recruit you for some of my geocaching adventures.

"When The Saints Go Marching In" was a tune we frequently heard in the 60's. Perhaps Mr. Arnold is doing his best to perpetuate the legacy of the past.

Hi ya'll. Funniest people in Texas write on this site.

Hope someone who knows more about planning a luncheon throws the next one. I think reminders were in order so here: this Saturday, 11:30 at Jake's Burgers on Belt Line Rd. in Addison. It's the place to be.

Lynell, wish I could have been there for the closet clean-out. Sounds like I missed some rare finds. What Goodwill did you send them to?

Amazing! I was extremely impressed with the video. There have been so many changes in the Dallas Public Schools over the years. I was surprised to see there was someone who had stayed around so long. Another wonderful teacher friend of mine is retiring at the end of this year after thirty-seven years. She was a brilliant woman and one of the best teachers a student could have. She was loved by everyone that knew her. She was also on the news. It is hard to imagine the lost of so much wonderful talent in the school district all in one year. I am sure they will be missed!

I was surprised and pleased to see a feature on the Channel 8 news last night and this morning about our SOC teachers.  Thought you might enjoy taking a look at the clip as well:  http://www.wfaa.com/news/education/Retiring-Dallas-teachers-share--122846509.html

Lynelle:  Don't feel guilty about the cat tree.  One of my neighbors has one cat and he has his own room.  The first time I saw it, I really couldn't believe it.  I mean it had everything possible for a cat to play with.  Just a tad strange.

No doubt that wedding veil mad you all that much cuter.  It sure made me smile thinking about you running around the house all day with it.

I have a few closets - okay a whole house - that could use that cleaning action if you have nothing more on your agenda.  Enjoy your day off tomorrow after all the work you and David did today.

CUTE??  Cynthia said I was cute, so I hope everybody remembers that. haaaa.  I looked through my '63 Den today and remembered that cutie-pie Cynthia was also a Clinic Helper.  Wanna bet her reasons were loftier than mine?  The clinic was air conditioned!!  Study halls were not.  Nothing humanitarian for Miss Garrett there.

We cleaned out two closets today and parted with such treasures as a three-piece avocado green Samsonite luggage set, my hard hair dryer, and many electric blankets. All that stuff went to the Goodwill collection center. Well, I found my bridal veil but didn't add it to the donation pile.  I wore it most of the afternoon.

Then we went to PetSmart and bought a second cat tree. I know they're ugly and they take up room, but the kitties love them.  Now each has his own tree and our chance of being reviewed in Architectural Digest moved several notches down the list.

Tomorrow will be a day off.  We have enjoyed this wonderful weekend thanks to those who gave their lives for America, so thank you to all veterans.  I hope everyone will look at the Memoriam page on www.soc63.com and click to see those SOCites who gave all for us. The link is near the top of the page.

Sounds like an early death to me Lynell.  Not only would you have to run for your life but you would have to hold up your pants to do this these days....

I hope to see Mary at the luncheon Betty is sponsoring next weekend so you may have a chance to deliver the message in person.  I think you may have gotten me confused with Betty but what a great state to be in when you have such a wonderful person as Betty to be confused with - be still my soul.  Lynell you are just so cute.

Cynthia, please let Mary know that Bedford doesn't deserve such a plight, but that everyone is pulling for him.

Claudia, that event sounds cool. When you say "Serve up the oldies," do you mean someone's going to bring my food and drink to me?

I hope everyone's Memorial Day weekend is going well.  Remember when this was close to the last day of school?  What an exciting time, with the blissful summer stretched ahead. I had no clue what the holiday was intended to commemorate, but I didn't have a clue about a lot of things.

Yesterday I got involved in a horde of police cruisers. They were in front of the DISD high school near our house. School had let out. The cops slowed traffic to a crawl because students were in the street, not on the sidewalk. No girls seemed to be present. (Can't say I blame them.) Did not see any incidents, but it was good to know the Dallas police were ready. I wonder what these young adults think traffic in "the real world" will do when they opt to stroll into the street to show off their undies without police support.

Can you imagine walking into Marsalis or Overton oblivious to vehicular traffic in 1963?

I think we all agree that the death of long-time friends and classmates is so very difficult. Happy many of you were able to attend Henry and Mary's services. It brings such joy to the family to see the outpouring of love.

Mary McCord Bach asked that I post on several places the update on her brother, Bedford. He is now bedridden and requiring 24-hr care. The family is with him constantly, holding on in faith. His birthday is June 1st and it would be so nice if he received cards and best wishes from SOC friends. Here's his address:
Bedford McCord

Mary Gene's sweet mother was at the service this afternoon, as were her wonderful family members.  The flowers and music were beautiful, and her brother delivered a personal and meaningful talk about his sister.  May she rest in peace.

Peaches and I agreed that we hope the next time she and I meet, it'll be happier circumstances.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of two of our wonderful classmates.  Mary Gene's mother was my principal when I first started teaching school at Anson Jones Elementary.  She was an excellent leader.  I wish I could be there to give her a hug and my best regards.

Henry was a great guy in school and turned into a wonderful man who adored his family.  About five years ago, I had the privilege of seeing and visiting with him when I replaced my carpeting.  He was the same terrific person I had always remembered.  He spoke so highly of his wife and kids...just so sad that he is gone.

I wish that I could have attended both of their services.  So glad that Peaches, Lynell, Claudia gave a report on Henry's.  Thanks so much.

Oh my.  Mary Gene and I were at Cliff Temple together.  Her parents were very active in that church and Mary Gene and I were in GAs and choir together.  I am saddened to learn of her death.  I will pray for her loved ones.  Does anyone know where her mother is?  She must be around 88 or 89 now.

Vick was sitting about 3-4 rows in front of us Claudia. I do not think he would even remember me. I recognized him when he got up to take Communion. Claudia and I went to lunch at Gordos and had a very nice visit. I had cancelled a doctor's appointment to go to the Memorial and had rescheduled it for afternoon. As much as I dread going to these I am always glad I went. It means alot to the familes, believe me, I know. I will  never forget my SOC friends who came to Billy's Memorial Service 29 years ago.
