Comments: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL THE SOC MOTHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS!
Comments: Barry, If you are going to the warrior weekend in port O'Connor you have to say hello to Rick Nagelmueller, he is my son Clay's friend Jenny's dad...boy did that make any sense. Rick will be taking some of the warriors out in his boat. The last time he took Clay out shark fishing Clay caught a baby great white and Tiff Jenny's sis caught a hammer head. Rick and Gail have a beach house in Port O'Connor.
Comments: Gaylan, I recall hearing the story of the dressmaker earlier this Spring on National Public Radio. She was unusually brave, defying the Taliban's restrictions on women having "jobs". By working, she was risking her life. Her reputation for making quality garments quietly spread through the neighboring communities. She had a scare one day when a woman affiliated with the Taliban stepped into her secret shop and asked her if she made wedding dresses. It turned out she needed dresses for several women and needed them quick. It was interesting that the Taliban can turn a blind eye to their own repressive rules when the circumstances suit them. Here is a link to that NPR segment and includes a pic of Gayle Lemmon. http://www.npr.org/2011/03/15/134533995/in-kabul-a-dressmaker-sows-entrepreneurial-seeds
Comments: Sorry but the event I posted about my daughter-in-law, Gayle Lemmon, was from me and I forgot to put my last name. Please don't erase. Didn't know the rules. Thanks so much for your support in this. We are trying to get the word out about the event.
Comments: Everyone is invited to the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Creekwalk Village, 801 West 15th St., Plano, Texas on Thursday, May 19th at 7pm. My daughter-in-law, Gayle Lemmon, who has written the New York Times Bestseller, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana will be the featured author, signing books, as well as, speaking about the book. It is the true story of an unlikely entrepreneur, Kamili Sidiqi, during the Taliban rule of Kabul, Afghanistan. During this time, women suddenly were made to wear burkas, banned from the streets, schools, and told to stay at home or risk beatings or death. Most of the men fled Afghanistan, leaving only the women to feed their families. Kamila, only 19 at the time, started a secret dressmaking business out of her home, and eventually employed over 100 women from her neighborhood. It is a fascinating and inspiring story. Gayle travelled for 5 years to Afghanistan, doing extensive research for the book and has become quite an expert on Afghanistan and it's people, as well as, it's problems. She was a reporter and producer for ABC News for 10 years before getting her MBA at Harvard Business School. Gayle is now a Fellow and Deputy Director of the Women and Foreign Policy Program at the Council on Foreign Relations. Some of you might have seen her cover story in Newsweek on Hillary Clinton a couple of months ago. If you would like more information on Gayle--go to www.gaylelemmon.com We would love to have a huge group at Barnes and Noble so spread the word and I hope to see a lot of you there. It promises to be a very interesting evening. Thanks in advance for your support.

Comments: And a big draw of the State Fair was to see the newest models, none of which came out till late in the year.
Comments: AND YOU COULD TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRANDS...
Comments: I got 70-something. It helped to remember that Studebakers were pointy and Buicks had those holes in the side. That was back in the day when cars were cars.
Comments: Got 96%...big Chryslers and Desotos confuse me..thats where I messed up..
Comments: 69% on 73% average. Considering I had no idea on much of it - not bad. The ones I had absolutely no idea on and guess the entire thing, I would get 4 out of 4. Is that weird or what. So how did you do Lynell. I am sure you nailed it!
Comments: Hey, Kids. Want to test your memory of the cars we grew up with? http://www.americantorque.com/game/car-show-50s/ Cynthia, sorry about getting your year wrong. See how you do on the car test.
Comments: You are welcome Lynell. Last I remember I have a lot friends from the class of 64 and enjoyed their reunion but I did manage to graduate a year later in 65. I am the baby to this class as 63 was the mighty Seniors at the time I arrived. LOL With you Lynell, God bless and protect America and our citizens everywhere in the world as another chapter of 911 goes forth.
Comments: Heck, Sharon, have you seen ME lately? haaaa.
Comments: God Bless America!
Comments: Lynelle, have you seen Fabio lately? He has not aged well. Sorry I missed the luncheon. My mom and sis and I had to go to east Texas. Hopefully, I can make the next one.
Comments: The luncheon was a great time - thanks to the photo group-ies Lynell, Lonnie, and Cynthia - we can all share in the fun. These luncheons provide a great time to catch up with everyone!
Comments: Many thanks to Cynthia Huse, also from '64, for sending her pictures from yesterday. That young girl has a steadier hand than I do with these cameras. You can see her contribution by clicking the Images page, then April 2011 Luncheon. Top righ is a button that will produce a slide show. Cynthia's pics start after Lonnie's photo of downtown Big D. I'm too tired to type in the names, but I'll bet you can figure it out. Thanks a million, Cynthia.
Comments: Lonnie Harmon sent me his pictures from yesterday! They're added to the Images page. If you run the Slideshow, Lonnie's photos start after the sidewalk star picture. If you're on Facebook and have not seen his video from yesterday (featuring Lonnie's original music!) be sure you go over there and look at it. It's really well done! My take on the Royals is that Diana didn't realize marrying Charles was just a job, and a hard one at that. Camilla seems more Charle's type than the 19-year old Diana was. Di may have read too many romance novels, since her grandmother wrote them. I believe Princess Kate is more worldly than her late mother-in-law was as a bride, and at least the couple has known one another for a while. Diana in an interview with Babawawa said she had had a "romance" while married because, quote, "We were in love." I thought, especially because she had children, that was a bad thing to announce. Heck, I've been in love with Fabio for years, but I don't think there's ever gonna be any romance. And if there were, I wouldn't blab about it on TV. ha.
Comments: Fun to see the pics of the party and looks like a happy group! C'mon...How soon we forget...... Charles wasn't allowed to marry Camilla because she would be a divorced woman..How Ironic is that?????...D and Charles had no friends in common...she was 20 and he was, well, in his 30s....D was naive and so are her boys and most of us to think that C was in love with D when they married....she was chosen of course...the royal line HAD to continue ya know. Too bad for the boys and the worshipers that D didn't understand that the royals stay hush hush about about scandal and keep their positions for the good of the people....heh heh heh!
Comments: Lynell - you should get the photos tomorrow. My GREAT niece and nephew kinda wore me out after the luncheon for a wonderful afternoon but I am zapped. It was a fun time due to all the wonderful people that came and made the event wonderful. Loved it and missed a lot of folks that could not make it this time but there will be more - soon I hope. Interesting Kathleen - had not heard that about Di's friends being struck. You know the Queen still looks pretty perky and her mother lived to be around 100 so Charles may or may not make another 15 years. Bless her heart for a long life - hope the Queen's heart holds up well enough that the adorable Will and Kate make the round after her. Just never liked a guy that would not honor his wedding vows. If he wanted Camilla, he just should not have married Diana - but then we would not have had this wonderful Will and Harry. Enough of my commentary.
Comments: Phil, you're so kind!
Comments: Great photos Lynell!
Comments: The pictures I took at today's luncheon are posted. Go to the Images page of www.soc63.com and click the top button. This will lead you to Smugmug, and if you click the Slideshow button in the top right, they'll do a slideshow for you. I apologize ahead of time for all the names I messed up. If you'll e-mail me, I'll fix them. Also, one SOCite - a nice brunette lady at the end of our table - I reeeelly goofed up on your picture. My apologies to you! I hope Lonnie or Cynthia got a good one of you. Also, I forgot to take one of myself, but you know what I look like. Cynthia and Lonnie, if you'll send me your pictures, I'll add them. Great time today, folks! If you were not there, we missed you.
Comments: WOWIE, CYNTHIA! That was a great SOC luncheon, and great choice of restaurants. David and I both luuuv El Fenix. My food was yummy, and the waiters did a superb job! I'm working on the pix now, and will post them later today.
Comments: The royal wedding was a blast. All the men decked out in their military uniforms. They were wearing so many medals their left shoulder was lower than the right. You would think they were decorated in every war in the last 100 years. I wonder if they actually earned these medals?--Mike
Comments: Cynthia, I heard just the opposite that Camilla sat down with a red pen and marked all of Princess Diana's friends off the guest list. They also said that Camilla lets everyone know that she is going to be the next queen. It seems even the Royal Family has their own internal conflicts. I thought the Royal wedding came off beautifully.
Comments: Kathleen - I heard a few weeks ago the royal family would not appreciate her being there so she was left off the guest list. I think built some bridges that could not be mended over the years. Fergie was pretty independent and outspoken. I also heard that while the Princes are friendly with Camilla, they also did not invite any of her personal friends to any of the events. Never have quite gotten over her being the other woman to their Mom. Oh well, on to the next Brit event. Likely the next generation coming along. Kate's MIL set a high standard for protecting her boys so it will be interesting to see what type of parents these young royals will be. Great I bet. They are so compassionate about people in general and down to earth it seems. |
