Comments: What a great location and video. The cat brought you luck, no doubt. Uncle Ben must have been looking down from above. Three hour break? WTG! Looks like an interesting cemetery, too. I'm impressed with your sleeping in a hostel. The word's not that far removed from HOSTILE. I was hoping you'd find Ben A. Matthews' lead-encased diary. Maybe next time.
Comments: Maybe two years back I was doing some internet research on Ben A. Matthews and discovered that in 1929 he was the Athletic Coach at Westminster College in a little town (pop. 307) outside Mexia, TX. He was around 26 at the time. The following year, Matthews moved to Dallas to coach at Sunset High. In January I paid a visit to the owner of that old college campus property and got permission to do some metal detecting there when the weather warmed up. So this past week I spent two days on the grounds with my friend Wayne Morin. We found a total of 28 coins and some miscellaneous relics. The oldest coin was a 1905 Indian Head penny. Unfortunately, most of the coins were from 1960 to 2000. We also located three geocaches hidden in the town. In 1948 the college acquired a barracks building from a nearby German P.O.W. camp which closed after the war. The barracks is now sort of a youth hostel and we used that as a convenient base camp. 1971 was the last year the campus was open to students. Sam Hughes of our class had an aunt that attended there in the 1930's. The school's yearbook is called The Wigwam. Here is a link to a short video Wayne made of our "expedition": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH1sI0pbw2I
Comments: I have never seen a movie theater anywhere since with a clock near the screen.
Comments: OH YES! I do remember....especially the blue neon around the clock. this is my brain !
Comments: Charlotte, are you telling me you missed The Beast of Hollow Mountain at the Lisbon? It was right across the street from Lisbon School. They sold giant sour pickles for a nickle and showed a Three Stooges episode, and a newsreel before the previews started. The Lisbon Theater had a beeyoutiful blue neon circle around a clock down front. The light on our DirecTV receiver reminds me of the Lisbon.
Comments: I guess I don't remember so well...but was there a Lisbon theater??? I remember the Crest...big time. Ouida and I sat in the same seat there with our arms around each other to watch THEM....we screamed a lot! Oh, we still scream a lot................haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Comments: Wanda, If you get in touch with Katy, tell her I said hello. My mother used to take us to the Lisbon theater when we were going to Lisbon Elementry.
Comments: Cynthia has set up a nice luncheon for us on April 30. The info is on the Events Page. Can't get the link for her e-mail address for RSVP to work. Calling India now for help. Wish me luck! Thank you, Cynthia.
Comments: If you can make, we would love to see as many of you as possible at a SOC Spring Luncheon. April 30th at 11:30 am El Fenix Downtown Dallas 1601 McKinney. Please let me know if you can make it by Thursday, April 28th at cahuse@sbcglobal.net. I need to know how many people to let them prepare the space for us in their large back room so let me know how many will be in you as well. All are welcome. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Comments: Probably.
Comments: Hey, Lynell...wonder if that was the same girl who had me looking over my shoulder?
Comments: Phyllis, that is terrible! At Storey, a girl told me to meet her behind the gym after school so she could beat me up. AS IF!! From that point on, I never left school by the back door. It was out of my way to walk home on Maryland Street, but I did.
Comments: When I was in 7th grade at Albert Sidney Johnston Elementary, a boy named Philip punched me in the nose for being a "damn Yankee." We had just moved to Dallas from Detroit. I was shocked, even though he had announced ahead of time that he was going to do it, and I stood my ground and let it happen. This was on the playground during recess, and no one did anything about it. Guess we needed some of those tough teachers from Lisbon!
Comments: Lynell, Ms. Roe would have frowned heavily at my slapping Jessie or your kicking Buddy. She might have given up completely on trying to "refine" us. I we can be assured that none of the boys were stupid enough to get Ms. Roe wet or to kick her. Of course, when you think about it, Ms. Roe would NEVER be getting a drink out of the water trough or standing at a bus stop for that matter. ![]()
Comments: Tanya, Katy's name was Lela Katherine Sharp, but she hated Lela and only went by Katy. Thanks for the information. I tried to call, but got no answer, but I will continue to try.
Comments: Phil keep in touch Kenneth,
Comments: Wha', you, too, Phil? I dropped by Geo-Johnny's with special soil x-ray glasses for him, but nobody was home. Guess they will have to go back to Big Lots.
Comments: John, I must have been right behind Barry and missed you!
Comments: Wanda, do you know if Katy's middle name was an L? I have an address for a Katy L. Williams (her married name) in Camden, Arkansas. Email me and I will give you the address and phone number I found, to see if it is her, has been at this residence for 11-15 years.
Comments: I often think of Katie Sharp. I have not seen her since graduation. I'm sure you remember my "going to Katie's house" escapade when we were in first grade. I will never forget it and when she was living, Momma wouldn't let me forget it. I would love to see Katie. We were actually good friends in school. I think Gracie Henry might know where Katie is if anyone knows how to get in touch with her. Martha Speaks worked with Katie at the Army Exchange for a long time.
Comments: I remember at Harrell Budd, in the 7th grade, we had dances in the gym...on Friday afternoons, I think. Danny Green and I were the only boys who would do "the Bop.". And I remember taking girls behind the gym to steal a kiss. Got caught once and had to explain my actions to Mr. Hilton and Miss Prather. Made sure I never got caught again!
Comments: Wanda, how nice to see you here! We don't offer the glitz of FB, but we love hearing from you. I think we'd all be in jail these days for the stuff that went on in grade school! Shooting water, slapping -- One day while waiting for the bus, Buddy Campbell hit me over the head with a book. I think it was a speller, because it was a lightweight book. I remember kicking him in the leg. Miss Wroe would not have approved, or maybe she would. I wonder if any boys squirted her with the water fountain or whacker her head with a book. I wonder what happened to Buddy Campbell, that tall blond boy named Eddie, Katie Sharp, and all the others who went their own ways.
Comments: Good morning all. I have been gone for a long time and decided it was high time I got back with the program. Reading the back posts, I see that we have lost Jimmy Kincaide in a tragic event. I remember Jimmy all the way back to Lisbon. There was a group of us who walked home from Lisbon and Jimmy would sometimes join us. He had a sweet smile and was a very nice kid. I remember that he was kind of quiet, but made lots of friends. I also saw that we lost Jesse King sometime back. Jesse was another of our "walking home" group. He lived at Kingsley and West Frio which was only about two blocks from where I lived at Ramona and Owega. I have a cherished memory of Jesse. We were at Lisbon, probably in the 6th or 7th grade. The bell had rung and there was a bunch of us on each side of what we called the "water trough" getting a drink. The boys loved to turn the fountain up so it would get the hair of the girl next to them wet. I must have been PMSing early in life, because when Jesse turned that water on my hair, I stood up and slapped him without even thinking about it. I think it shocked me more than it did him. Both our mouths were hanging open. After a few days, Jesse waited until I came out of school to walk home and apologized to me and I apologized to him and we walked home together and laughed about the experience. My memories of both these boys are that they were sweet friends. Even though I have not seen either of them in a long, long time, it saddens me to know they are gone.
Comments: Phil Pelch E Me
Comments: Johnny: I stopped by with your gifts, but the guy that answered the door said that you had moved unexpectedly and were living in the house with that guy that ran for governor. What was his name? Rafi? Saleb? Whatever? I know you were looking forward to seeing me. Barry
Comments: Thanks, Phil. I'll be around the house all day tomorrow if you want to drop off a little something.
Comments: Happy Birthday Geocache John!
Comments: Venita, you are so right. Everything I remember or ever heard about Jimmy Kincaid is that he was an okay guy. I guess the lesson for the rest of us is to keep both hands in clear view of the police, should we ever deal with them.
Comments: So sorry to hear about Jim Kincaid I did not know him in school, but I worked with him and we had a lot of good times at A A Mfg. co. in Garland.I was shocked to hear about his death only with I had known sooner my heart goe out to Lia he spoke of her often the funny thing is all the time I worked with him and we ran with some of the same people I did not connect him to SOC. However I did know that he use to date Brenda Taylor now Brenda Taylor Button but did not know this was the same person that went to Soc. Small world, I know Jim would not of acted as they said he did he was a kind gental man and I will miss him.
Comments: I join Lynell in wishing Geo Johnny a belated Happy Birthday. Hopefully, next year will be better for you and your family. |
