Comments: Yes, the El Chico at Davis and Zang has been Tejano for many years now and is still very good. Gloria's is fixing up the old firestation at Bishop and Davis and should be open there soon; I presume that the original location at Davis and Llewellyn/Cedar Hill will be closing down in favor of the new, larger, spiffier location. Darn, this is making me hungry. Fortunately, Tuesday is Taco Salad/Nachos Supreme day at the deli downstairs!
Comments: Thanks Kathleen and James - should have remembered it was on Ft. Worth Ave. I used to live just down the street from it in the late 60s when I lived in apartments. Maybe the one I was thinking of was previously El Chicos. The big competition was just down the street - El Fenix and is still today on Colorado. Just goes to show - Tex Mex can be good at many places.
Comments: Yes Tupi's out on Ft Worth Ave. Thats where we used to go. When our family moved to Dallas we lived in the area across from the Stevens Theater. Then we moved to our home on Alelaide. The problem of walking home from all the schools would you ended up playing in the creek for two three hours.
Comments: I remember going to the Tupinamba Restaurant which was located on Fort Worth Avenue close to the Stevens Park Theatre. It was my first experience eating oysters on the half shell (the oysters were served on a silver tray of ice) and drinking a cold beer, which was on tap. Those were the days, because nowadays. I have developed a shell fish allergy and if I were to eat oysters I would immediately be sent to the closest hospital. Today, Bill and I also drove through my old neighborhood on Kilburn and my elementary school Elisha M. Pease. I pointed out to Bill where everyone my age in the neighborhood lived. He was impressed that we all walked home by ourselves from school. I was surprised at how small the houses looked. I found my saying over and over I can't believe we lived in such a small house.
Comments: I approached Mr. Matthews with that same look.
Comments: One other story about our stay at Westminster's campus. We were talking with the caretaker and mentioned that the main building looks like a haunted house. To our surprise he informed us that back in1973 a horror movie was filmed on the grounds, using the old girl's dorm (built in 1901) to serve as an asylum. The movie was titled "Don't Look In The Basement" or sometimes it was billed as "The Forgotten". In the following YouTube video you can see a hapless girl approaching the "asylum" as the rain pours. The 1973 movie trailer is a kick to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wkLgmoe8Dc I made sure to lock my room at night.
Comments: Sure do James. A previous boss of mine took me to one close to LBJ Frwy and I believe it was Marsh - just south of the freeway. Could not believe it was there and still as good as I remember. Was the old Tumpamba (sp) on Davis and Zang? Cannot remember more than it was good off hand. If so, that is a good Mexican eatery yet today but not the same.
Comments: Phillip do you remember the Tupinamba's. Jean and I found the New one ( 16 yrs old ) off the north Dallas toll road. Hadnt been to one since 1977. It reminded me of a lot of good times we all had at Oak Cliff. You think you - John and Beachum might make the next lunch here in April? Does anyone else remember the Tupi's in Oak Cliff
Comments: Phil, right you are. K&M Cookies was a few doors away. Spring day like today, windows open, science teacher droning on, aroma of fresh-baked cookies wafting through the classroom. What a fond memory. No wonder I know more about cookies than I do about science.
Comments: I remember the Lisbon theatre, wasn't there a broken cookie store nearby?
Comments: Great travelogue John, enjoyed the video and history!
Comments: What a great location and video. The cat brought you luck, no doubt. Uncle Ben must have been looking down from above. Three hour break? WTG! Looks like an interesting cemetery, too. I'm impressed with your sleeping in a hostel. The word's not that far removed from HOSTILE. I was hoping you'd find Ben A. Matthews' lead-encased diary. Maybe next time.
Comments: Maybe two years back I was doing some internet research on Ben A. Matthews and discovered that in 1929 he was the Athletic Coach at Westminster College in a little town (pop. 307) outside Mexia, TX. He was around 26 at the time. The following year, Matthews moved to Dallas to coach at Sunset High. In January I paid a visit to the owner of that old college campus property and got permission to do some metal detecting there when the weather warmed up. So this past week I spent two days on the grounds with my friend Wayne Morin. We found a total of 28 coins and some miscellaneous relics. The oldest coin was a 1905 Indian Head penny. Unfortunately, most of the coins were from 1960 to 2000. We also located three geocaches hidden in the town. In 1948 the college acquired a barracks building from a nearby German P.O.W. camp which closed after the war. The barracks is now sort of a youth hostel and we used that as a convenient base camp. 1971 was the last year the campus was open to students. Sam Hughes of our class had an aunt that attended there in the 1930's. The school's yearbook is called The Wigwam. Here is a link to a short video Wayne made of our "expedition": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH1sI0pbw2I
Comments: I have never seen a movie theater anywhere since with a clock near the screen.
Comments: OH YES! I do remember....especially the blue neon around the clock. this is my brain !
Comments: Charlotte, are you telling me you missed The Beast of Hollow Mountain at the Lisbon? It was right across the street from Lisbon School. They sold giant sour pickles for a nickle and showed a Three Stooges episode, and a newsreel before the previews started. The Lisbon Theater had a beeyoutiful blue neon circle around a clock down front. The light on our DirecTV receiver reminds me of the Lisbon.
Comments: I guess I don't remember so well...but was there a Lisbon theater??? I remember the Crest...big time. Ouida and I sat in the same seat there with our arms around each other to watch THEM....we screamed a lot! Oh, we still scream a lot................haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Comments: Wanda, If you get in touch with Katy, tell her I said hello. My mother used to take us to the Lisbon theater when we were going to Lisbon Elementry.
Comments: Cynthia has set up a nice luncheon for us on April 30. The info is on the Events Page. Can't get the link for her e-mail address for RSVP to work. Calling India now for help. Wish me luck! Thank you, Cynthia.
Comments: If you can make, we would love to see as many of you as possible at a SOC Spring Luncheon. April 30th at 11:30 am El Fenix Downtown Dallas 1601 McKinney. Please let me know if you can make it by Thursday, April 28th at cahuse@sbcglobal.net. I need to know how many people to let them prepare the space for us in their large back room so let me know how many will be in you as well. All are welcome. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
Comments: Probably.
Comments: Hey, Lynell...wonder if that was the same girl who had me looking over my shoulder?
Comments: Phyllis, that is terrible! At Storey, a girl told me to meet her behind the gym after school so she could beat me up. AS IF!! From that point on, I never left school by the back door. It was out of my way to walk home on Maryland Street, but I did.
Comments: When I was in 7th grade at Albert Sidney Johnston Elementary, a boy named Philip punched me in the nose for being a "damn Yankee." We had just moved to Dallas from Detroit. I was shocked, even though he had announced ahead of time that he was going to do it, and I stood my ground and let it happen. This was on the playground during recess, and no one did anything about it. Guess we needed some of those tough teachers from Lisbon!
Comments: Lynell, Ms. Roe would have frowned heavily at my slapping Jessie or your kicking Buddy. She might have given up completely on trying to "refine" us. I we can be assured that none of the boys were stupid enough to get Ms. Roe wet or to kick her. Of course, when you think about it, Ms. Roe would NEVER be getting a drink out of the water trough or standing at a bus stop for that matter. ![]()
Comments: Tanya, Katy's name was Lela Katherine Sharp, but she hated Lela and only went by Katy. Thanks for the information. I tried to call, but got no answer, but I will continue to try.
Comments: Phil keep in touch Kenneth,
Comments: Wha', you, too, Phil? I dropped by Geo-Johnny's with special soil x-ray glasses for him, but nobody was home. Guess they will have to go back to Big Lots.
Comments: John, I must have been right behind Barry and missed you!
Comments: Wanda, do you know if Katy's middle name was an L? I have an address for a Katy L. Williams (her married name) in Camden, Arkansas. Email me and I will give you the address and phone number I found, to see if it is her, has been at this residence for 11-15 years. |
