Comments: Barry, I'm sorry to hear about Joan's new fracture. I hope osteoporosis hasn't raised its ugly head with her.
Comments: Oh, yes, VERY small world. David and Jacquelyn Collins were in my sister's class at SOC. Jacquelyn was one of my sister's best friends. She attended the Deb Reunion in 2005 and is still as beautiful as ever! I lived on Exeter at one time...I was 6 to 8 years old...and yes, David, Barbara and Candy lived on our street...I didn't know many others since I was such a tyke. I am sorry to hear that Henry is ill....I wish we knew how to contact him...anyone know?
Comments: I agree with Cynthia, Bob, you and your ice cream were missed.
Comments: And the world just keeps going around and around - how small can it be! Thanks Bob - so good to hear from you and that David is doing well these days. We missed you at the annual party and your world winning peach ice cream! Always so good to hear from you.
Comments: What a small world! The Suttons,Jan,Van and Kay,were my neighbors on Marfa St.,back in the day!Always wondered what happened to them.I didn' know the girls that well, but spent quite a bit of time around to block w/Van,Chuck Cooper,Ronnie Punkeney,Don Brunson....memories
Comments: Dare I interlope. Cynthia, the world is indeed very small. David Collins and wife Jacqueline are frequent visitors here at the orchard in the summer usually for ice cream treats. David is retired from the air controller business and they live in a wonderful house on about five acres just north of Mineola off Hwy 69. Jacqueline is still BFF with Kay Sutton and they talk often even though Kay lives in Hollywood and if I recall she is an acting coach. I googled Kay sometime back and the years have been awfully good to her and it probably helps that her husband is a most tallented photographer.
Comments: What a funny story Martha. Yes, Ted was quite the hunk in those days as well as David. I always associated them with Rick and David Nelson on TV somehow. Michael Collins ran into Ted a few years back. He had his own construction company but I understand he is now retired. I think David is as well - he was a little older than Ted but I really do not know much more about either one of them. Had I been there, you know we would all have the scoop.... Now that I have U-Verse - love it - I cannot seem to get off HGTV and DIY....dare I get a hammer! Or a new yard or go house hunting in another country no less. Gosh, is the whole country crazy on house prices or are we just that cheap here? Love Dr. Oz and Castle and most of the investigative news who dun it show IE. 24 hours mystery or such. Reality - ugh - you can have it. DWTS has been great but wearing a little thinner these days. Cooking shows are always interesting as well along with GMA that I watch as I dress for work everyday. Still miss the combo of Charlie Rose and Diane Sawyer with Robin Roberts but it is still good. Always enjoy PBS as well for good programming on numerous subjects including Antique Roadshow and Home shows. Let's face it - I watch tooooooo much TV. Barry - you always have such interesting stories. How nice you can have the squirrels there for entertaining and comfort. Hope your wife gets better soon and can mend all the breaks in time for Christmas.
Comments: I watch HGTV, followed by CBS (Modern Family, Castle and Desperate Housewives). PBS for Antique Roadshow and Masterpiece Mystery. Everything else is here and there. Cynthia, you brought up a name that I haven't heard in a long time, Ted Collins. He drove some kind of hot road Chevy and was a lifeguard at Glendale. Once he came outside the fence and carried me into the the pool area and tossed me in. I was wearing white shorts with blue undies. I learned that day not to wear colored lingerie under white.
Comments: Henry was dating Laura when we were planning our 20th reunion. He brought her to a party at Glen and Suzanne's house and I don't think she was impressed. Maybe we were too rowdy! Henry is one of the best dancers you will ever see. For a man of his size, he can really move around the dance floor. I really hope he gets better so he can join us at our 50th. What's the status on Mary Kay?
Comments: Never a dull moment! Just as Joan's wrist had fully healed, she got a stress fracture in her ankle while on the treadmill. During Thanksgiving week, we were in Port O'Connor and she slipped when getting out of the truck. Now the stress fracture is a clean break. I think it's time to check the warranty that I got when we were married. I guess it's expired after 35 years. On Saturday, she heard 2 dogs barking on the deck. She went out and found that they had Buddy's kids daddy. They were pitching him back and forth. Joan broke them up and took "Big Bob" (you would know why we called him that if you saw him!) inside, wrapped him in a towel and held him until he died. I had gone to a men's breakfast at church and when I got home, she was very sad. The dogs belong to a neighbor and they are always getting out. I think they are Jack Russell Terriers and some mix of other small breeds. I'm just glad I wasn't home. What was really strange was that after I buried Big Bob, we had 5 squirrels running all around the deck, on the roof, in the trees like they were celebrating Big Bob's demise. They did this for about 30 minutes while I sat on the deck. Two of them stopped to eat some pecans on the bench while one sat on my boot. Like I said, never a dull minute. Maybe I should take up geocaching, or whatever it's called.
Comments: Michael, I saw a great interview with Sting last night on Bloomberg TV. BTW, I have all the ingredients for your pumpkin mousse and will take it to our neighbors' house for Christmas dinner. Thanks!
Comments: Fun game...of the big 4 networks it's Fox network for sports, CBS for the big bang theory, two and half men, and how I met your mother...History, Discovery, Blue hwy TV, RFD TV, and last but not least Daystar.
Comments: Yes, best wishes to Henry, the tallest boy I ever saw. My hope is that he surprises the medical folks. If anyone could, it's Henry C. On another note, my prediction: The big TV networks will bite the dust in a few years because the reality shows will not go to syndication and the big three are not putting up that much programming a person would want to lose another hour of their life viewing again. They won't be able to resell reality like they did shows that required, dare I say it, talent. What network do you watch most? My fave is HGTV, followed by History, followed by whatever I've recorded and can zip through.
Comments: It's a shame we don't hear from Claudia Cash or Henry Coomes. They were such standouts back in the day. If that had been Claudia that Phyllis was talking with, you'd think one or the other of them would have said "You look kind of familiar?". Claudia and Henry were married from Dec. 1964 to Mar. 1973 and I think they had a child. Then Henry married Linda Kay Carrell (May 1973 to Nov. 1980) and I believe they had a son. Googling around the internet shows that Henry married Laura McCommas in June 1981. I wish him a speedy recovery from his health issues.
Comments: Phyllis - I had been wondering about the Coombs family for years. I used to run around with Mary Coombs from the class of 65 in Boude Storey and SOC. I have not heard or seen her since our graduation. Was the lady named Claudia? Seems he used to date a Claudia in HS and I thought they got married but she seems to have disappeared as well. My brother had a funny story recently. He likes to canoe and bike ride. He was in a competition canoe ride with a guy named Jim (?) Collins. They struck up a conversation for sharing the canoeing experience. Since Dale goes to Joe Pool Lake a lot to canoe and this guy lives in Arlington goes there as well, they traded telephone numbers and met up there one Saturday morning recently. While on the lake and during much exchange of conversation, things narrowed down to him talking about his Dad and Uncle David that lived on Exeter. Bingo Ted and David Collins that lived only 2 houses and one cross street from us on Exeter. How small can the world get?
Comments: I wrote a check the other day to purchase some hand-made Aggie Rose jewelry being sold by the artist in the lobby of my office building. The artist's companion saw my address on Bishop and said, "oh, she lives in Oak Cliff!" Turns out both of them were -- originally -- from the OC. The artist formerly lived on Bishop herself and graduated from Sunset. Her friend said she had attended Zumwalt and was the ex-wife of Henry Coomes, with whom she has children. She said Henry is suffering from some serious health problems. Disney's right; "it's a small world, after all!"
Comments: Luncheon photos are great. Peaches your house looked very Christmassy (sic) Lost track of how many photos Lonnie was in,all with pretty women.
Comments: Yes, John as Lynell says be careful fiddling with someone's pole
Comments: Interesting finds, John. Do you ever worry about getting arrested while fiddling with utility poles? Your bravery is commendable.
Comments: Well, Phil, at least in your eyes I got to be "The Man" for almost 24 hours! This morning I went metal detecting at Terramont Park which is the closet park to my little grandson's home. While there I decided to chase down a geocache named "Sundance 1". My GPS told me I was within 6 ft. of the cache but the only prominent feature was a black light pole at the edge of the basketball court. I checked under the "skirt" at the base of the pole (which is a frequent hiding place) but found nothing. I pulled on a black faceplate on the pole but it was securely fastened. Just as I was about to give up I kind of studied a chrome faceplate that appeared to be screwed to the pole. I gave it a gentle tug and it came off in my hand! It was held in place by four little magnets! Inside was a small log to sign. It indicated that the cache had been hiding here since 6/4/2008 and I was the 45th person to sign the log. Very innovative. http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/sundance1.jpg http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/sundance2.jpg About 50 yards away I discovered a toolbox chained to a tree. It was padlocked and had a sign on it saying "Where in The Woodlands is Rudolph?". It wasn't a geocache - maybe some sort of promotion? http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/t-pk5.jpg
Comments: Sorry John, I thought you were one of the 4 who found the woman's pipe. I know you were there in spirit
Comments: John You the man!
Comments: Sorry, in the pic in the previous post - Mark is standing at the far LEFT. He's the guy that rented a detector to the gal with the Conroe Landfill problem.
Comments: One more tale from the Tomball metal detecting club. Last month a lady contacted the club with an unusual request. She owned a ranch and several years ago a load of 30 ft. drilling pipe was stolen from her. It was to be used to build fences and pens. The suspected culprit was her ex-husband. Recently, she received a tip that the missing pipe was buried on a ranch outside of Bellville (30 miles west of Houston). She was given the approximate location within an area of about 100 yards. Four members of the club offered to make the trip to Bellville to attempt to locate the purloined pipes. They pulled up on the side of the road, surveyed the lay of the land and searched for two hours. Came up with nothing. One member noted that the only place they hadn't looked was where the cars where parked. They moved the cars and in three minutes picked up the signal of something LARGE under the ground. Got out the shovels and dug down two feet - Whammo! - there was the long hidden pipes! http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/pipes.jpg Mark (the metal detector distributor) at far right: http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/pipes2.jpg
Comments: I hope that lady has good luck and finds her jewelry. Sounds like a gross task. Recently I was at Pei Wei, preparing my drink and gathering fortune cookies and stuff. I heard a "ping" sound and noticed my gold earring was missing. A man behind me said he thought he saw it go down the hole to the trashcan. He pulled out the trashcan and dug till he found the earring. And they say don't talk to strangers!
Comments: I'm a member of the local metal detecting club and the club stands ready to assist people who have lost jewelry or other metallic items. Usually at no charge. Yesterday the club was contacted by a woman in Conroe, requesting that any interested member meet her this morning at the Conroe Landfill and bring along their metal detector. The back story is that she'd been at a theater yesterday and somehow knocked over her purse. Contents spilled everywhere including into a nearby trash can. The purse contained two rings, one of which was found and turned in to the theater. She surmises the other was in the trashcan. Later in the day she decided to go it on her own, called off the club, and rented a detector from a local distributor (they rent for $25 to $45 a day). She somehow found out when and where the garbage truck with the theater's dumpster contents will arrive. Her plan is to be there and start digging and swinging the metal detector. I don't have high hopes for her success but eagerly await a report from Mark (the detector proprietor) on her search. It was 35 degrees in Conroe this morning.
Comments: oh, Aretha!! I am so sad!
Comments: Many more photos of the luncheon....so fun to see the good times and friends! Thank you Lonnie and Lynell! Wishing Everyone Merry Christmas!
Comments: Lonnie has e-mailed me his pictures from the luncheon at Peaches' house. Check 'em out on the link on the Images page. They're still uploading, so give it a little while. Thank you, Lonnie!
