Comments: Don't forget, mateys ... today is National "Talk Like A Pirate Day". Q. How much does it cost a pirate to get his ears pierced? A. ... a buccaneer! In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, the Sultan of the Sand set out on yet another hunt for the elusive dubloon. I dropped anchor in Tamarac Park - former site of an old sawmill back in 1930. The scurvy mosquitos were out this morning and cut me search short. "Stink-foot Jack" (that's me pirate name) came up with the following loot near a 100 yr. old weeping willow: ![]()
Comments: Lynell, let me re-check my calculations, but I think you're within a nickel of what the "real treasure hunter" has found, and hey, you didn't have to be the lurker around children's playgrounds. But, you did have to endure the Wal-mart sights.
Comments: A shout out to all you treasure seekers out there (and you know who you are): Today I was Walmartin' and I found a shiny quarter right there on the floor in plain sight. Unfortunately, I also saw a woman in a way-too-snug dress with a sideseam that had come unsewed from the hem all the way up to that roll above her waist.
Comments: Sam, thanks for the info you sent me. In reviewing it I could find no reference to "Progressive Insurance Company" having a policy of funding "liberal causes". However, it is clear that their former CEO, Peter Lewis, definitely chooses to make large contributions of his personal wealth to liberal entities such as: American Civil Liberties Union ... $15 mil. MoveOn.org ... $12.5 mil Marijuana Policy Project ... $3 mil The Democratic Party ... ? Those donations seem small when compared to other causes he supports like arts and education: The Guggenheim Museum ... $50mil Princeton University ... $233 mil Case Western Reserve Univ. ... $36 mil. My take on it all is that as a 77 yr. old eccentric billionaire he is entitled to spend as he chooses. I am inclined to separate the "Progressive Insurance Company" per se from the actions of their former CEO. [I still buy Hershey's chocolate products even though they employed Jeffery Dahmer at one time]. Ten years ago when I was in to motorcycles, Progressive, by far, offered the most competitive insurance rates. State Farm wouldn't even talk to me. I hope Barry can find a suitable boat insurer with satisfactory premiums. However, I don't think his policy cancellation will have much impact on Peter Lewis' spending habits.
Comments: Info has been forwarded to you Johnny. And Flo ain't no Adrian, but somehow I knew you'd take a shine to her!
Comments: Cousin Sam & Hero Barry, at the risk of opening up a can of worms, just what offensive causes did you determine that Progressive Insurance Company is funding? Should I burn my prized autographed photo of their spokesperson "Flo"?
Comments: Thanks to Cary Askins ('62) for the heads up sent yesterday regarding Progressive Insurance financing progressive causes. I forwarded it to several classmates, and just got a return email from Barry Gibbs saying he's just cancelled the insurance on his boats that he had insured with Progressive. Their reply, when he told them why he was cancelling, "We've heard that a lot lately". WE THE PEOPLE need to let anybody know, whenever possible, that they're NOT going to take our country away with some lunatic progressive agenda. Hooray for Barry!!! He's my hero today.
Comments: I guess the recession finally reached The Woodlands. I would expect John to be finding Krugerrands, diamond jewelry, and caps from bottles of Sam Adams Utopias Bierdrome Secours beer.
Comments: Sultan of the Sand update: Set out this morning on my 4th treasure hunt. It was 74 degrees but the high humidity continues. I returned to Alden Bridge Park's sand volley ball court and nearby kiddie playground. At the volley ball court I found my 2nd dime! Had more luck at the tot lot ... 2 pennies and my first Quarter (down 5" under sand and bark mulch over by the slide). Near the end of my hunt a mother and her 4 yr. old son showed up to play. The boy's name was "Owen". I know this because every two minutes his mother was shouting "Owen, you're gonna fall and hurt yourself" ... "Owen, that swing is gonna hit you in the face" ... "Owen, yada yada". Owen didn't bother me. Secretly, I was hoping he had a half dollar in his pocket as he hung off the end of the slide. ![]()
Comments: Wayne Z called me this morning with good news about David Splawn's wife. She is getting stronger and will be going to rehab soon. He hopes to come to the 65th birthday celebration to be with friends. The power of prayers! Remember cards mean alot to people at times like these.
Comments: Chapstick and cell phones.
Comments: John, wonder what one would find on the ski slopes after the snow melts? Wonder if anyone in your hobby group has search some of those? You did those players a favor finding those items in the sand...they might cut themselves if they fell on them. It saddens me too to learn of the health issues of our classmates. Another reminder for us to live every day.... we are able to get up....to the fullest. That is great news about Dorothy's husband.
Comments: I am most sorry to hear of the severe health issues of some of our classmates. Wish I'd taken better care of my own health since the days of SOC. My new hobby is forcing me outdoors more, but the heat gets me down pretty fast. Try to do my treasure huntin' between 7:30am and 10:30am - then shut it down. The beach is a great place to look, but a bit too far to drive. So my "beach" substitute today was a nearby sand volley ball court. The BIG find was a 2000-D Lincoln penny along with two pull-tabs, and a piece of a nail (which registered as a quarter on my machine). I didn't realize there was an anthem for those of us in this challenging sport. Turn up the volume and enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px6Dbbwwbo0
Comments: Please do not think of that last post as a downer. Those of us who believe in the power of prayer (and they all do that I mentioned) need to know so they can pray for our classmates.
Comments: More prayer requests. Jimmy Nicodemus wife, Daisy called a week ago and left me a message. He has no memory at all. he knows she is his wife. He pats her on her knee and sats "I love you, you are a good women". She has to totally take care of him. I will call her soon. It would be nice if those of you who knew him would write a letter. I am sure she would read it to him and maybe somewhere in his mind it would make him feel happy. I did not really know Jimmy except he was so handsome. She said to tell his friends hello. Talked to Richard Berry. Harolyn just found out she has breast cancer in both breasts. they are starting to talk to doctors at Baylor and find out path to take. Please send cards. They were at our last Reunion and had so much fun. They are a darling couple. Judy Cross Land's daughter died July 22 from years of battling kidney disease. She had 3 transplants (judy gaver her a kidney first and it lasted 8 years.) Please pray for our dear classmates and treasure every moment we have. Their addresses are in the last directory we had at the 45th. If you need their address email me or call me. peacheswalker@gmail.com. 214.553.0232 Bob Averitte (Dorothy's husband)is doing well and will go home either Monday or Tuesday. They will be at our 65th birthday celebration.
Comments: Hi Darlin Sharon, we have a family living at the ranch to take care of the place and animals(4 horses, 22 cow-girls, 2 barn cats and 2 Donkey boys). We could not run it without help. Terry has not been here the whole time either. He has board meetings etc in Houston and other cities. Someone has to earn some $ so that I can be here......haaaaaaaaaaa!! He has been seeing to the ranch and riding the horses while back in Texas. I just put my flag out to commemorate 9/11 tomorrow. I hope to see flags all over the place tomorrow. We need to NEVER forget!
Comments: If you plan on coming to our 65th birthday celebration get those reservations to me now. I need to make sure our room is large enough. I can not commit without a number. I also need your baby pictures!!!!!! Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate, Celebrate!!!!! Remeber, othere classes are invited also.
Comments: Charlotte, like Lucy in The Long, Long Trailer, is filling up the entire mobile home with pretty rocks. ![]()
Comments: Charlotte, while you are spending all that time in beautiful CO, who is looking after the ranch? Hope you recuperate fast and get back home before the snow falls.
Comments: Charlotte, I think those are rocks that fell out of my head once when I was dumb enough to hike up and down there. Michael, obviously Carlsbad and Austin are better for bat watching. But, Waugh St. is all we have here. Kinda like Galveston is technically a beach, but...
Comments: OMG Lynell, I bet that find is worth a fortune in your dreams!! ![]() I've found a few beautiful rocks here in Colorado...does that count? I will collect them and display them after I wash them...I mean beautiful........I need a specialist to tell me what they are...Chrystal's, granite and so on... I think...so intriguing! I don't walk far yet, but hope to get in better shape to be able to hike with friends who do very "friendly" hikes..like up the mountain and then ride the gondola down!! ;~) down is hard on one's knees!! Looking at the 65 reunion videos and photos, I watched the part about going to SOC high school......what a difference! Where was Roger??? I wish we had had such signs around school...Grrr..GO BEARS!! etc. However, I don't think the kids these days had the innocence we had...like ...um KILL THE TIGERS!! we couldn't say that these days.
Comments: We had our kitchen countertops replaced a few years ago. In the dead space at the corner where two cabinets meet, we found a Kentucky Fried Chicken bag, complete with bones and a few crumbs in a box. There was a receipt for 79 cents from 1976. Wonder what all that's worth on Ebay.
Comments: He Jud, I finally made it to the Waugh Bridge bat colony on our labor day visit to Houston. It was less than Carlsbad and a little spooky walking under the bridge with a couple hundred bats flying around my head. Still it was worth the time and effort. John, you're talking about finding gems reminds me of a tenant in a condo we owned and rented to a woman and her teenaged son. After sticking us with two months rent, moving in the dead of night, and not leaving a forwarding address I found it impossible to return a gold ladies watch I found in the boys closet. The watch has small diamonds surrounding the face. The only markings on the face of the watch read Nieman Marcus. Monica still has it in the safe that was about 15 yrs ago so I guess the law has given up finding the rightful owner...waiting for the cold case detectives to call at any time
Comments: JS, if you'll check out the Frio Ave. side of 1444 Presidio, you might turn up my aunt's high school ring (McKinney Boyd High, 1927, initials VH inside) that she lost in about 1955. It's gold with a blue stone. Be very careful while doing this.
Comments: Well Johnny, I did find that Smith & Wesson Model one and a half in the oven of a house. (Same one like you sent me a picture of, and that one is $1395). And, oh yeah, your aunt's house on Aster in Oak Cliff that I bought from you, we dismantled a chimney, all "Dallas" bricks, 1600 hundred of them. I tested the water a while back and had my daughter sell one on ebay for $20. We probably left a fortune under that Winnetka house. I'll get you to go around, and under the next one bought, particularly in a treasure trove like Oak Cliff. You can keep the dog tags; we'll split the good stuff.
Comments: Dorothy, I hope everything goes well with Bob's recovery. Sam, I wish I'd had a metal detector a few years back when we were rehabing that 1921 home at 818 S. Winnetka (see the "before" pic below). Don't you just know there are some OLD coins in the yard around that place [and every other old home in that area]. In the other old homes that you fixed up and flipped over the years, did you ever discover anything neato hidden in the floors, walls, garages etc? ![]()
Comments: Dorothy Shamblin Averitt's husband, Bob had a triple bypass heart surgery Tuesday and he is recovering fine. He just left ICU and is going to a room at Methdist Hospital in Oak Cliff. Room 8023, 214.947.8023. I am sure Dorothy would love to hear from y'all. Methodist Dallas Medical Center
Comments: That's great John. A few more treasures like that and you'll have that thing paid for in about 12 years. You need just one homerun.
Comments: Sam, no political future in store for me. I am content to just piddle around. Well, the rain finally stopped long enough for me to jump out this morning and try out my brand new Bounty Hunter Legacy 3300 metal detector. I spent two hours at a nearby kiddie park and came up with 3 coins and a nice little inscribed gold locket. Foolishly, I made an agreement with Dru in which she gets first dibs on any jewelry I find. So I guess I can kiss this prize goodbye. http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/09-09-10_finds.jpg My quest to find a 100 yr. old coin continues.
Comments: Okay Cousin Johnny, I will concede that you could have President of the United States after all. I having been reviewing all the polls, news, outlook for the 2010 elections, and the 2012 elections, condition of the economy, the U.S. standing in the world's economies, and other assorted (or is that sordid) data....and have concluded you would done a much better job. I believe with you at the helm, a lot less rats would be jumping off the ship, and we would all be in better shape. And applying for King of the Burning Man Festival three times would not have hurt your resume, as it turns out. |
