I am still in Colorado and had to wrap my front porch plants last night to ward off frost damage.

I saw all the flooding around the Dallas area on TV news.  Hope all of you up there are safe.

The fires in Colorado are not near me, but so sad for those people too.

Looks as tho the 65 class had a fun reunion.  I won't be at the Birthday Party for our class in October...boo hoo...gonna be out of the country.  But, I know it will be a blast too.  Peaches always does a good job.

With all the metal detectors, they should be able to find both the penny and the nickel. And, maybe even the Ferrari tie tack.

It sorta looks like they're all looking for the change that Harry Southwood dropped on the floor as he fished his keys out of his pocket.  Or maybe not!

Last Wednesday night I attended the monthly meeting of the Tomball Archeological Recovery Club (TARC) over in Tomball, TX.

About 25 people, including 5 women, showed up. This is a club of metal detector enthusiasts and each month members bring in some of their best "finds" of coins, lost jewelry, or old relics.

I introduced myself to Scott, the club president, and asked if there was a visitor sign-in sheet. Scott told me "Naww, we don't keep a sign-in sheet ... just tell me your name and I'll introduce you later".

About midway through the meeting it dawned on Scott that he had forgotten to introduce me. So he pointed my way and said "Everybody give a big welcome to our new visitor ... Harry Southwood".

Oh, brother. Thankfully, on Sept. 16th I can visit a closer club, the Montgomery County Artifacts Recovery Club (MCARC) in nearby Oak Ridge.

Here's a pic of my fellow Tomball treasure hunters last Wednesday. President Scott is seated wearing the plaid shirt. Harry Southwood is not pictured.

Sparky sounds like he is smarter than a lot of humans.  He's obviously a Conservative and not one of those Liberal types.  Most Liberal dogs tend to be the smaller, more insecure type that bark all the time. I wonder what he thinks about Obamacare?  He wouldn't be able to get that ringworm medicine if it were in effect.

And let me add my best wishes to Ouida for racking up another year.

Now let me digress and ask for some Equal Time to offset all the Cat Chat I had to endure a couple of weeks back.

We have an artsy friend (Cynthia) who lives in nearby Willis, TX, and has a snappy little dog named Sparky. Sparky has a creative bent and publishes his own dog-blog. Here is a link to recent happenings in Spark's World ...

Hey, Phyllis, I didn't know we shared a birthdate.  Hope yours was happy.  And I don't feel old either.  My sister drove over from Weatherford to take me to lunch, my choice, and I chose Luby's, where all the old folks go!  But there weren't a lot of old ones.  I indulged in a slice of strawberry cheesecake, but could only eat a third of it.  Really good food.

Well, it's official:  I'm old.  I turned 65 yesterday, and the world didn't come to an end, despite the "Death by Chocolate" birthday cake.  Funny, I don't feel old.  Gloria Steinem once said that we have no idea how old certain ages really are, because -- historically -- women have lied about their ages, so that a woman who admitted to being 65 was actually 80.  Hopefully, she was right, and we're not really all that old.  I recognized the picture of Mary Lewis, by the way, just didn't speak up in time.

I would love to attend the 2011 Burning Man with you but I am going to be busy that week.  I don't know when it is scheduled, but I am sure that I have something planned.  Take lots of pictures!

Barry, from what I can gather about "Burning Man" it is an opportunity to drop the shackles of conformity and spend five days living as you please in the desert. And at the end, you get to go to a HUGE bonfire at night and howl and dance. Who doesn't love a big bonfire? ... ask any Aggie.

The "stated purpose" of the event is to pull together a short-term community where radical self-reliance, radical self-expression and participation is encouraged. Each year an art theme is chosen which gives the participants a direction in which to channel their creative urges.

Since 1998, a similar event called "Burning Flipside" is held in Texas in the hill country around Austin. It only draws around 2,000 participants (as opposed to the 40,000+ that show up on the Nevada desert).

Wow, the timing of Steve Foster's announcement is just too eerie. Remember in early August when I posted the pic of the seductive 14 yr. old girl that NOBODY could identify ... Mary Francis Lewis?

If you recall, Mary married Pat VanGurp and soon divorced. Sometime later she married "Jigger" Downing. Downing went attended Adamson High and graduated in 1963.

The last time I spoke with Mary (around 1990) she told me Jigger had a son named "Chevis" [I don't think Mary was the mother]. Chevis was a loose play on the famous scotch beverage Chivas Regal (perhaps in keeping with the 'drinking' theme). Thanks for the heads-up, Steve.

Peaches, do you have a way of reaching Mary with the news? Jigger's final resting place will be in Canton.

My brother and I punished one of your classmates relentlessly. Jigger lived a few blocks from our stomping grounds and being good Christian boys, we took it upon ourselves to bring Jigger to the Lord. He was obviously raised in a home where Bible reading and Sunday School was not on the agenda. Jigger had a foul mouth according to our standards so my big brother felt it our responsibility to beat the Devil out of him every time he used a cuss word. Eventually he moved on and so did the Foster urchins. Hubert "Jigger" Downing, born Oct. 27, 1944, died Aug. 29, 2010. Sorry we were so cruel to you, Jigger.

And, John, what is the significance of the Burning Man gathering?  I'm sure it is much more spiritual and soul searching than I can comprehend.  Spending time in the hot desert and blowing sand doesn't sound very up-lifting to me.

John:

When I saw your picture, I immediately thought of 2 famous TV icons: 1.  Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley and 2. Daryl's other brother Daryl on the Bob Newhart Show.  I think I totally missed that phase of life while in Lubbock going to Tech.  I've never frequented salons, so I can't comment on how they dressed, either.  Looking back, I led a pretty boring life.  I think I'm glad I did.  I did have a couple of madras shirts and a white belt.  Don't remember if I wore them.

Here is a Live Link to the Burning Man webcam. It pans the desert and zooms in here and there on various installations. Looks hot, dusty, and a bicycle would be a big help in traversing the playa.

Karen, Jimmy says there's no dealing for that jacket until you deal away at least three lawn mowers in the garage.  Cousin Johnny, interested in a lawnmower?  Oh I forgot, Javier's crew takes care of it!

Note To Karen Powell:

For the record, that jacket was vinyl or maybe Leatherette. I don't recall what happened to it, so Jimmy may well have won it at that pokergame. When he's not looking, check the left pocket to see if it still contains a blue lucky rabbit foot and a little container of Binaca - my standard equipment for a night at the disco.

Congratulations on the 42+ years of matrimony. I was a witness back in mid-1962 when Jimmy issued his FIRST marriage proposal. We were sacking groceries at the Safeway store and he was assisting a long, lanky, sweet cashier named Louann. As he was bagging up this unusually large purchase, Jimmy looked over at Louann and said "When are you going to marry me and take me away from all this?".

Louann (who was already married and maybe 6 years older than Jimmy) just rolled her eyes and kept on punching that cash register.
