Strange Lady, I envy you the weather! We have a blind and deaf 14 year old mini Schnauzer, Westie/Peke combo, a Pug, and an improbable Blue Heeler/Corgi combo. The Schnauzer (Kramer) has to be carried outside, but he gets around fine in the house, and once in the yard. He has his routes memorized. And he still has a healthy appetite. He found us about a month after our other Schnauzer died at 15. All our pets have very distinct personalities and are like family members. The Pug is the boss lady!

Fire in the fireplace tonight!  So wonderful.  It is a chilly 60* here in the Rockies.  It is supposed to be around 80* tomorrow afternoon........but no humidity!  Yea!!

My little Westie is 15 years old.  She is fragile, but is OK and enjoying this cool weather.  My rescue Mix-ling is 1 1/2 years old and full of energy.  The two are quite a contrast, but the little Mix-ling is patient with the slower Westie.  I sent off Mix-lings DNA to see what she is a mix-ling of.............I think she is schnauzer and something else small.....maybe Shitzu (sp?) or mini poodle....she has great coloring and is very smart.  I love those doggy girls!

Peaches, as you know I'm also a cat woman. We had our carpets cleaned in '08, as always, by supposedly green cleaners. A few days later our precious 13-year-old cat brothers got sick. They had bad liver reports from the vet.  Ultimately, they had feeding tubes inserted through their necks, and we fed them through the tubes for months.  In the end we lost them both and had broken hearts, and although we will always love them, we got lucky again with two brother cats. Like your house, ours was too quiet, too clean and awfully lonesome for more than a month.

We wouldn't want to live in a house without a sweet little animal who adores us for no reason.

Jud, I truly know how you feel about your kitty. I had Blackberry for 20 years and was not ready to let him go. I spent $500.00 at the emergency room and would have spent more (they thought he might have a brain tumor) until my mother convinced me it was time to let go. I grieved. I had Little Bit for 17 years when she died about 6 months earlier than Blackberry. I was so LONELY without them. I would come home to an empty quiet house.  I went about 3-4 weeks and went out on a search....found Sasha (at the age of 1 or so).  A month or so later went out on another search for a playmate and found Cinnamon. Now I am happy and not LONELY. We have conversations and they keep me company. Both are 13 years old and I plan on them being with me for a long time. Funny how when I am on the computer Sasha jumps on the chair with me and wants to type. When John, my brother died his cat Sheba became very close to me. I had to put her to sleep at the age of  17 years old and I grieved again. I truly belive that people who have animals are much happier than those who do not. They love us unconditionally. Jud, how do you hve a 3 pound cat? Cinnamon weighs 16 and Sasha weighs about 15 pounds. They are on diet maintenance food. Oops, I did not mean to write this much.

Thanks to all who post here for keeping this guestbook moving along, and for understanding about the "whole name" rule.

I hope Ted rallies and has several more years of Excellent Adventure at the Caldwell house.  It's hard for us to see our animal friends get old, even when they have had long and happy lives.

Ted is recovering nicely. Thanks for asking. Main concern now is his weight, which is just over 3 pounds. But, his appetite is back.

No cremated cats. But, for the last 35 years we have always had 4-5 each dogs and cats. And the assorted birds, fish, turtles, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils, etc. It's very strange. Our animals have always been long-lived, and invariably when one died, another showed up at our house. I think the word is out in the animal kingdom.

And  I thought Buzz Baron was the greatest cat lover of all time!  He definitely ranks somewhere at the top of the leader board!  How many cremated cats do you have, Jud, that you are saving for your burial with them?  Just curious!

Good morning, Jud.  I understand why you're putting in the extra duty.  I grew up with Sammy Cat, a surly green-eyed girl who lived to be 22.  She went to the vet one time, other than routine inoculations, when an ant bit her chin.  She looked like a furry Jay Leno.  I hope Ted gets a good report.  It's only money.

Just for you, Catwoman, I'm toiling away in my office this morning...prepping the market for another good week! Just got our almost 18 year old cat back from vet. Had dental surgery to remove abscessed tooth, teeth cleaned, and several tests to see if Ted has cancer or a thyroid issue. $1200! But, he is worth it!

Jack, thanks for the tip about the seller at the Fair. I know what you mean about automatic renewals. I received a card this week saying this year's Passbook is on its way. In five-point type it says call if you don't want it. I called and had a long conversation before they took my name off. Terminix does this, too. They send a card saying they'll be by for a termite inspection Monday at 1 p.m. The card arrives Tuesday. Wonder who dreams up this stuff?

On a cheerier note, guess who I heard from today.  Laura Chovanetz Schmidt, that's who!
Laura, please chime in here.  It's great to hear from you!

I just dropped in for a minute. I was having a hard time the class of 1963.I dropped out from the Golden Debs in my junior year to get married. That didn't work out for more than 3 years. It was a bad situation. In my late 20's I went to nursing school. RN. My 2 daughters were very proud of me and I was proud. I work in the cardiac field for almost 20 years.
I got sick in 1992 and never made it back to work. I was really bummed.
I married in 1992 to Ron Schmidt. A wonderful man. He is my rock. I told him I was sick when he asked me to marry him and he said "I love everything about you". Isn't that wonderful. Over the years I ran into a few SOC buddies. I worked some at Foley's now Macy 's.
Hello to everyone,
Laura

Good luck with that, Lynell. The Time Life CDs, books and DVDs plans remind me of the record clubs of the 60s. 12 albums for a penny and then they would send you 1, of their choice, a month. If you didn't like it, just send it back for a full refund. Of course the "box" it came in had to be completely destroyed to get it out so you had no container to return it in. Then they went to sending a post card out each month with that month's selection, many with songs and artists you had never heard of. You had to mark the "No selection this month" box and return the card (pretty quickly or you'd get it anyway) You were obligated to purchase 12 albums over the next year. If you picked outside their monthly selection, you paid retail price and shipping and handling.  There is usually a guy with a booth at the State Fair, in the "Women's Building" who has a great selection of CDs for sale. I think some of them are the same as the one offered on TV. Let me know if you ever get off their mailing list.

Me again.  We normally don't watch infomercials, but a couple of weeks ago, one hooked us. It was for Time Life Oldies But Goodies. This set of 8 CD's, 16 songs each, is excellent.  Plus they throw in another double CD of One Hit Wonders. On a whim, we ordered it  It's fantastic! They've reworked the tunes so they all play at the same level, and there are very few duds in the group.  A dud, in my definition, is one I would have twirled the knob away from on KLIF or KBOX.  This will set your toes to tappin' and make you dig out your bobby sox. Now to get off Time-Warner's mailing list.

Bye, Bye Birdie was up there with State Fair as a classic, goofy movie.  I recently saw The Girl Can't Help It, where Jayne Mansfield made her "singing" debut.

Barry, with all due respect, isn't it presumptuous for you and Sam to assume that just because folks here don't want to gripe and complain constantly about politics, and grow weary of others complaining here, that they don't care or have their heads in the sand...that they aren't just as concerned as you...that they need to "wake up"!  Of course we all care...and we all respond each in our own way...but we don't need a rehash of the daily drudge every day...we get enough of that on Fox News and CNN...and we have access to the same newspapers and magazines and websites as you doe!  Certainly our country is in trouble, but constant complaining doesn't help...probably some on the complaintants would do better take care of their own personal business before they have another margarita. Just turnin' up rocks!

I feel the same as Sam and I think that if the current state of affairs in government are given a "yawn" by anyone, we are in trouble.  Our kids are in trouble and their kids are in trouble.  Our government is led by a self avowed Muslin which we know very little about.  Most of his appointees are Chicago thugs and yet were pacifily sit on our rears and act as things are going to be OK.  His just appointed Medicare czar is on the record as being in favor of doling out medical care to the elderly as he sees fit.  That, my friends, is us.  Take a minute to read what Lee Iacocca has to say about our current state of affairs and the see if you want to simply "yawn".  It's time to wake up people......

Just as true today as it was when his book first came out.
Often we need to be reminded of Iacocca’s words.

Remember Lee Iacocca, the man who rescued Chrysler Corporation from its death throes?  He's now 82 years old and has a new book, 'Where Have All The Leaders Gone?'.

Lee Iacocca Says:

'Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage with this so called president? We should be screaming bloody murder! We've got a gang of tax cheating clueless leftists trying to steer our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even run a ridiculous cash-for-clunkers program without losing $26 billion of the taxpayers' money, much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, 'trust me the economy is getting better..'

Better? You've got to be kidding. This is  America , not the damned, 'Titanic'. I'll give you a sound bite: 'Throw all the Democrats out along with Obama!'

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore..

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs.. While we're fiddling in   Afghanistan   ,   Iran   is completing their nuclear bombs and missiles and nobody seems to know what to do. And the liberal press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the '  America ' my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for.. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have. The Biggest 'C' is Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C's of leadership, with crisis being the first.)

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with thumb up your butt and talk theory. Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a  strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A hell of a mess, so here's where we stand.

We're immersed in a bloody war now with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving.  But our soldiers are dying daily.

We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the world, and it's getting worse every day!

We've lost the manufacturing edge to   Asia   , while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs.

Gas prices are going to skyrocket again, and nobody in power has a lucid plan to open drilling to solve the problem.  This country has the largest oil reserves in the WORLD, and we cannot drill for it because the politicians have been bought by the flea-hugging environmentalists.

Our schools are in a complete disaster because of the teachers union.

Our borders are like sieves and they want to give all illegals amnesty and free healthcare.

The middle class is being squeezed to death every day.

These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you've got to ask: 'Where have all the leaders gone?' Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?

We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping the government will make it better for them.  Now, that's just crazy.. Deal with life.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when 'The Big Three' referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, look what Obama did about it!

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the  Chicago gangsters in Congress. We didn't elect you to turn this country into a losing European Socialist state. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on NBC or CNN news will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough? Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here.  I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope - I believe in  America . In my lifetime, I've had the privilege of living through some of    America 's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: The 'Great Depression,' 'World War  II,' the 'Korean War,' the 'Kennedy Assassination,' the 'Vietnam War,' the 1970's oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years since 9/11.

Make your own contribution by sending this to everyone you know and care about. It's our country, folks, and it's our future. Our future is at stake!!
