Comments: Thanks Barry for answering a question for me. I was wondering how much authority President Obama had on the open seas. Do you know how far out is this particular oil spill? I also agree that we should have taken up the offers of other countries who have had this problem. Finally, I think it is terrible that boats are dropping lines to the bottom of the ocean and trapping everything in their nets. It is hard to believe they can get by with this off the coast of the United States. Ginger, I would like to say that I would support any group that supports clean energy as the rest of you should. We desperately need to develop alternative energy sources in this country. We can no longer afford to buy oil from other countries. We need to be self supporting and develope clean energy that would provide JOBS for AMERICANS.
Comments: Although we have not fished at all 3500 offshore rigs, we have fished at a lot of them. Only once have we been around a rig that was leaking. I called the Coast Guard, gave them the rig number and it was being worked on later in the day and the leak was stopped. Considering the environment, the oil companies have a remarkable safety record for offshore rigs. And, Sam, you are right on everything you have said about "O". I wish I had the stomach to listen to his speech tonight, but I would rather watch re-runs on the weather channel or watch my yard turn brown from the lack of rain.
Comments: Thanks, Barry, I enjoyed the walk down 'appropriate shorts for men' aisle.. It brought to mind the 1st grade teacher at Lakeview Elem. in Nashville, that wore those short, slit-up- the-side shorts with a tank top and those real 'cheapy' flip flops that we wore to the beach back, whenever.. She wore them in the spring when it became hot, and no one ever told her it was inappropriate..! It didn't help that she was about 6'1'' and stood out in a crowd anyway.. (It wasn't even Field Day, either.) 'I knew he would be 'lurking' out there... Hi...Sam. Thanks for the info...'
Comments: John: The official length for mens' shorts is 12" shorter than the waist size, measured from the waist to the hem of the shorts. Do the math. Here is the official word: http://mensfashion.about.com/od/wardrobebasics/a/ShortsDosDonts.htm
Comments: The mission statement of Hands Across The Sand is: "To organize a national movement to oppose offshore oil drilling and champion clean energy and renewables." If I give a realistic response to what Ginger has said regarding my thoughts on "Hands", I will be politicizing what is currently a national emergency for our country, so I won't. I could point out that the Feds own most of the western U.S., and won't allow drilling, or that oil companies don't pay royalties beyond 50 miles off-shore, as an incentive to "go deep", or that there are over 3500 off-shore rigs operating presently. You only hear about the one that leaks, not the thousands that don't. But we need to focus right now on stopping the leak, keeping as much oil from coming ashore as possible, and restore our coast and its people. And I should mention that "O" will be seizing the crisis in his speech this evening to push Cap & Trade. But I won't say that either.
Comments: John, they wear them long here in Memphis... Of course, if you pull them halfway down like they do here, you would really fit in.. Wear a 'doo-rag' and you are automatically a Memphis' Bro...!
Comments: Sam's too busy telling me that 'Hands Across the Sand' is some 'pantywaist' deal.. Give him a 'worthwhile' project... Something that will help all 'mankind'... He needs to experience that... ![]()
Comments: With the arrival of the June heat, I've been shopping for men's shorts. Somebody tell me who it is that gets together and decides how long shorts should be. Remember back in the 1960's when shorts were, for the most part, just a little longer than tennis shorts. Today's shorts seem sooo long. Or maybe my legs are just stubby? While sitting at the doctor's waiting room yesterday, I picked up a tip from a magazine titled Men's Health. It said to be very careful in selecting the right length for your shorts. Too short = American gigolo. Too long = Alabama juggolo. I'd look right at home in 'Bama.
Comments: Lynell: The US does have jurisdiction out 200 miles, but it's a big ocean out there. We see long line fishermen out in the Gulf all the time that are from who knows where. They pull up to a rig and about 20 guys will start dropping lines to the bottom. Everything they catch goes on the boat. Legal or illegal, it doesn't matter. A few minutes and hundreds of fish later and they move on. When the oil leak first occurred, there were 13 countries that offered aid in cleaning up the spill. The Obama administration did not respond to any of them. The Jones Act has to be suspended to allow foreign ships to operate in US waters. "W" suspended the Act temporarily after Katrina. This Act prevents foreign skimmer ships from helping with the cleanup. There is also $3 billion already collected from the oil companies to clean up oil spills. Why has this money not been made available? Sam, you need to get on this!
Comments: June 26..12:00 noon, there is a event called 'Hands Across The Sand'. It's suppose to occur simultaneously around the country. Sierra Club is one of the Sponsors... It's support for clean energy... You might google it.. and see what's going on....
Comments: Lynell: If you remember, that oil pipeline in Alaska killed off all the wildlife because the pipeline went across the migration paths. I'm sure the Kennedy's are just concerned with the migrating birds. Perhaps if there had been a couple of wind generators on each side of the Chappaquiddick bridge, Mary Jo would sill be alive. I think the caribou like to get on top of the pipeline so they can see farther and it's warm.
Comments: SOC Girls Trip to New York City! We're planning a 3 night stay in NYC in late September. I'm waiting on group quotes now. If you're interested email me at kay@kctravel-tpi.com or call 972-385-6413.
Comments: Barry, I recall that recently the Kennedys had a cow, to quote Bart Simpson, about an in-sea windmill farm that would spoil their ocean view. NIMBY strikes again.
Comments: Lynell: The oil companies would love to drill closer to shore, but the environmentalists and the government won't allow it. Also, the chamber of commerce doesn't want the view spoiled from their beaches. As a fisherman, I would love more rigs close to the coast. Along the Texas coast, the majority of rigs are 20+ miles offshore. State waters go out 9 miles. The CCA and other groups have joined together to place a system of artificial reefs in state waters since the area where there are no rigs is an aquatic wasteland. Fishing pumps billions into the coastal economies-both recreational and commercial. Oil rigs close to shore would help everyone but the wackos.
Comments: I heard on NPR, this evening that 'groups' are asking for 20 Billion from BP and BP only has 'half that in assets'... When they mess up the economy of a state..what price can you put on that.. We don't know the outcome for all those gulf states and whether it will go up the Atlantic Coast.. It's not good...
Comments: I hope the USA has jurisdiction over the open sea. However, that's doubtful. Drilling one mile below the sea surface sounds mad to me. How about all the shallow water near the shore? I'm not a geologist, but seems like that would be easier to manage in the event of a calamity.
Comments: What good does a tough speech do? Left-Right?.....grrrr! Stop this and get that oil under control!! BP is responsible ...it IS their mess but ours to bare. I hear it may be September before this crisis is even quelled! I did not say cleaned up...I said quelled...so sad!
Comments: For years I have been reading about how conservatives and right wing groups are against any type of government intervention and are terrified of what seems to be the basic, daily role of government in most countries--not just the United States. (Socialism) But since BP has managed to create an environmental disaster, all I have heard from the right is that the government needs to take over from BP. While the left is saying it is their mess, (BP's) let them pay for it and straighten it out themselves. Personally, I don't think BP has come through because they could have used various means to clean up this mess, but they have continued to let the oil assault our shoreline and precious habitats. I hope in his speech tonight that President Obama takes a tough stance with BP and any other future mega corporations who are so uncaring and negligent.
Comments: Sam, I was looking up insurrectionist and anarchist.. You know...Sam...Anarchist don't like any control...any government control... Does that ring a bell...? I had a magnet flag on my car..I think someone stole it.. I have a real nice flag and if I hung it out, someone would steal it.. They steal Bibles, flags, purses and a lot of other things.. more valuable.. This is Midtown but it doesn't matter, I heard someone had their car stolen and vandalized several times out in Germantown..that's the suburb that had an average income of 90,000 a yr..and many people have their Master's degree. It's probably higher than that now... What I really hate are those flags they mount on the roof of the car, like in the President's Motorcade.. I'm seeing less and less of those. Lots of people were making fun of those...so I guess people stopped putting those on their cars.. Now that's one thing you will not see on my Mitsubishi...! All you people 'lusting' after Porsche 911's can have those...! I do have a 'flag pin' that I wear to patriotic events and to DAR meetings, occasionally... ![]()
Comments: Ginger, hang on while I go jump off the roof of my house! "Change has not come yet", you say? What....are you waiting for them to come take your MIRAGE away, or what? If we get ALL the change these crazies in Washington want, they won't even let you keep a Mirage. Well, maybe a Mirage, but nothing more. These are Marxists, socialists. They're not viewing fixing the problems in the Gulf as just an emergency for our country that needs federal attention. They view it as crisi to gain more governmental control. Geez! They want enough change that you'll be huddled in a corner crying, in case you hadn't figured that out. And that Lynell, quite the insurrectionist with that American flag decal on her window (I have one on one of the cars, Lynell).
Comments: I knew you were kidding Charlotte...Palin's remarks would be funny.. Isn't there a bumper sticker with that on it...? or something... Change has not come yet.. We are going through the aftershocks..of a lot of bad times, and they are not over.. It has been predicted that our economy and lifestyle will change. If we cut out all oil, you bet it would change..Dru probably wouldn't have a new knee..! I wonder if Smith and Nephew made that knee.. They're here...in Memphis, in the Ghetto.. Lynell is an insurrectionist...! My son and his middle school group always liked the Anarchists...thingy.. I've been told that the Mitsubishi has a good motor..A mechanic told me..It's just the 'struts' are worn out..I want my Beetle back, too... ![]()

Comments: I have an American flag decal on my window, probably considered controversial in some neighborhoods around Dallas.
Comments: Ginger, We inherited a 1990 Dodge Carravan that has run for years and is still running. It has a Mitsubushi engine that our mechanic always brags about. He says it is just like having a new engine. and always tells us to keep the Dodge van. We also drive a Honda Accord hybrid which gives us at least 40 miles to the gallon. When we bought our last car, we test drove almost all the SUV's and we bought a Saturn Vue at unbelieveable price. It has restored my faith in American cars. It is unfortunate that GM did away with such a reliable and comfortable SUV.
Comments: I was just kidding about the bumper sticker........have none.....would have none....ever! haaaaaaa!!! I do have a support our troops yellow ribbon magnet on my back door. I think I had a 6 Flags bumper sticker one time when they went around in the 6 Flags parking lot and put them on all the cars...........think about the law suits that would happen today if a business did that!!!!! haaaaaa!! Have a great day! ;0)
Comments: Oh..that's what a 911 is....! I have no money.. I would like a 'used' pickup that could hold a camper.. Of course, I want a pickup that gets 42 mpg... Won't happen.. Sure wouldn't have happened during the 'W' era... (Bush always had that 'goofy' look on his face...) That Mirage...still runs.. It's a lot better than the red Cavalier, I had.. It was a 1990 Cavalier and it was right in the middle of the 5 yr. period, in which Chevy put out 'Lemon' Cavaliers.. I wish I had my old VW Beetle...My husband (at the time)totaled that one or I would still have it.. ![]()
Comments: A red Mitsubishi Mirage? No wonder you have bumper stickers all over it! I was going to get you to give me a tour of Memphis next time I was in town, but I think I'll just rent a Porsche 911.....with no bumper stickers!
Comments: Ginger: Sorry to disappoint you, but no "W" sticker, even though I did vote for him twice. Faced with the candidates in the last election, I would have voted for "W" again if he could have run. I noticed something interesting about "W" one day. I was listening to one of his speeches on the radio on the way home from work one day. It was a good speech and he was saying the right things, at least, according to my right wing bias. I got home and turned on the TV and everything changed. He always had this little "grin" on his face, like he had gotten away with something and I could barely stand to watch him. Same speech but I perceived what he was saying differently. I think he would have been received in a different light if there had been no TV's. The only stickers I have ever had on my cars were a SOC sticker. a Double T when I was at Tech and a Southlake Carrol Dragon sticker when Bryan was a Dragon. I do have a "Fire Pelosi" sticker at home and I have come close several times. Maybe I will put it on the next "Obama '08" car that I see in the parking lot! We had a '78 911 for many years that I was trying to sell a couple of years ago. We had a customer that had looked at it several times and he came over one day with "Obama '08" stickers all over his daily driver (Taurus wagon). He made me an offer on the 911 and I politely turned him down. The thought of Obama stickers on our car was more than I could handle. It did finally go to a good family.
Comments: The only time I had a bumper sticker was in 1969 - no words, just a Peace sign. It was removed by persons unknown when we were stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I guess the concept was just too hard to understand.
Comments: Those are the people that have lots of causes and have 20+ bumper stickers on the back.. I saw more of those in Texas than I see in Tenn.. Those cars are very interesting but hard to read all the bumper stickers at the traffic light...! Barry, I'm not a Car/SUV bumper sticker 'snob'.. I have my Sierra and Inks Lake on the front window and my Lennon and Be Kind To All Creatures on the back bumper..along with my dying ACC sticker.. Of course, my red Mitsubishi Mirage is 10+ yrs old and has outlived any 'classy' description.. A 'W' sticker would look 'out of place' on my car.. I bet Barry had one of those...! |
