I always worry about people that have bumper stickers all over their car.  Whenever I see a car with an Obama '08 sticker, I have a strong urge to see how far my 2500 Duramax can move them from the roadway of life.  I have 2 stickers on the back window of my truck-cute little redfish with CCA on them (Coastal Conservation Association).  I think putting stickers on your car is asking for trouble, but I have yet run into any anti-redfish people.

John, thank you for your updates.  Tell Dru I am still admiring her painting!  It looks so great in our living room.

Tonight "on demand" we watch the Wolfman with Anthany Hopkins....ha!  New twist on old fantastical story.

Well, Dru and I made it thru all 7 hours of "Avatar" (or so it seemed).

I'm sure most of you came away with the same take on the movie as I did. That, being, why do so many movie heroes bear the initials "JS" [ie: Jake Sully in the case of Avatar]?

A mere coincidence? I think not.

More like a law of nature.

No "W" decal on my car.  I was never a big "W" fan.  I just couldn't support "Mr. Internet".  Something told me he would someday claim he created the internet, and save the world from climate change, and sure enough he took the credit for both.  He's probably got some oceanfront property in Arizona he'd like to sell.  Wait, that's Kipper's now, and it's in California, and she'd probably sell.

Does that mean that all you people that take the approach that 'W' is a victim..does that mean that you are also some of those people that 'sported' one of those 'W' decals on your car or SUV...as the case may be in Memphis and Germantown...?    Oh, my goodness...I am so disappointed in 'you-all'... if.. you-all  (southern talk for ya'll) had those decals on your SUV's...!

Thanks Ginger, for mentioning the passing of Anita's Mom.  Anita is doing fine.  She had Alzheimer's so Anita felt like she'd lost her Mom some time ago....and Anita's at peace with her passing.  None-the-less, it's hard for all us when we become orphans.   Everyone have a great day.................Now, let's move on and find something else to blame "W" for....or not.

That's right...Kathleen..You know...? We're not 18 anymore...! I can't do what I did when I was 18, 25, 35... My Senior(as in old age) friends have dances, all the time (every Saturday night). I stopped going because of the back and hip problems.. And there were 'some idiots' there that would swing women around like they were a sack of potatoes..One woman was swung/ slung (take your pick) across the dance floor and the 'idiot' caused her to break a wrist and bones in the other hand.. It's not worth it..
That man has gone to his reward.. Thank goodness, he's not slinging any more women.
I don't see a problem in being truthful...We're not 18 anymore...! And as long as I can, I'll stay busy.. I knew a woman that played the organ at a Baptist church..here for 30 yrs +. She had rheumatoid arthritis(may still be living). She kept doing this to keep active, she loved music, and it kept her fingers from going totally...crippled..
Life goes on... and then it will stop....for each of us.. Namaste....all (and Sam).

Ginger, I am sure you are right about not being the only person who has degenerative disk problems. A lot of us have serious health problems. Lynell talked about her nine hand surgeries. (All I can say is she certainly gave the doctor enough chances to fix the problem). Some of you have posted about hip and knee surgeries. I had one person email me that he no longer went to SOC events because he didn't want his friends to know how seriously ill he really is. ( He is someone all of you know). Although most of us never mention our health problems on the website, I am sure a lot of us have them. I would hope that we could all show some empathy toward our classmates who are having health problems Congratulations to Ginger, at least you are volunteering, active, and trying alternative ways of keeping healthy.

My goodness.  I missed range of motion and balance problems, falls, crutches, ankle problems, a cane and spine injections.  Just call the Scooter Store, they'll "hose" Medicare direct and it'll give you an excuse to dispense with the marathon training!

Sam, you've always got a funny... I bet I''m not the only one out there that has degenerative disc problems... I first had problems 30 yrs ago..This past winter, I only had one weekend with problems standing up straight..!  It is getting worse. The point in physical therapy and restorative yoga is to strengthen the muscles around the spine and hips... The discs are wearing out.. I walk and I walk carefully because I have a range of motion and balance problem.. I've been injured several times in falls..usually in our fine public school systems.. Several times with workmen's comp... They try to play everything down.. I've been on crutches once in Nashville for an ankle problem and a cane once, in Austin after a fall at school.. The cane may come back eventually, don't want the 'motorized scooter' thing.. Hope therapy, yoga, and probably spine injections will help for a while.. But you're still funny, Sam. Give you a subject and you're off and running...!  It's tough getting old..!

Restorative, degenerative, physical therapy, disc problems, scoliosis, handicap placard.  How can you drive anything more than a government sponsored electric scooter with all those conditions?  What is that, wheel chair yoga?

I loved all those English teachers... Johnny was not nice to Miss Yium....as I remember..  It's too late to make up for that one..
Avatar is a good movie.. We saw it w/o 3D... The same for Alice in Wonderland..no 3D...I like Johnny Depp...but all us 'artsy', whatever people would...
I went back to Yoga, this evening..  This is 'restorative yoga, for people with injuries, etc...Been playing hookey, a long time.. Since I'm in physical therapy for degenerative disc problems and scoliosis, I decided to venture back.. Also have a handicap placard for my car...
I would think that Dru would have one of those..eventually...
I have a VBS meeting tomorrow.. Working only one day, as a storyteller, but it's been a bunch of years since I've done that.
Have a good Weekend ....

John, I hope you and Dru have a fine evening with Avatar, and that Lonnie has a winning discussion with Terry about putting Adrienne's poster in the living room.  BTW, wouldn't the past tense of "slink" be "slunk."  Miss Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce, Mr. Lllllloyd, Miss Yium; Help!

Jud, I took down the Adrienne Barbeau shrine two years ago and replaced it with the Marie Osmond shrine when she recently divorced. That only lasted 3 weeks til I learned Marie has 8 kids.

Sidebar: Lonnie Harmon ('64) is the proud owner of my prized Swamp Thing poster. He was the winning bidder at an auction of donated prizes sponsored during their last class reunion.

Dru sent me out today to fetch a movie from Blockbuster. I was to come home with "Shutter Island" or "The Wolfman" (as a fallback selection). BOTH were completely checked out!

Then the Blockbuster clerk reminded me that "according to our gigantic Blockbuster database, you and Mrs. Southworth are the only remaining couple in North America who have NOT seen Avatar".

So I slinked home with Avatar.

Well-wishes go out to the Barry Gibbs household where his wife took a bad fall at home yesterday afternoon and broke her right wrist.

Dru it will get better. Everyone I know that has had knee replacement surgery eventually are happy with the results. You were probably concerned about being under the care of Nurse John.  That might bring tears to your eyes.

I am having cataract surgery Monday and then again in two weeks in the other eye.  I can hardly wait.  I have been blind all of my life and look forward to this.  Having the Restore lenses so I will not need reading glasses.

Congratulations, Dru!  I know you're happy to be home, but you're probable darned tired of that leg hurting.  Remember that time wounds all heels, and also heals all wounds.

Janelle Carroll wrote a story for our Guest Column page a few months ago.  It's about her knee replacement surgery.  It's titled Ouch Ouch Ouch.  Betcha Dru can relate.

Thanks for the update, JS.  I hope Dru feels lots better in a day or two.

Linda, best of luck to you on your surgery.  I hope you spring back fast.

I'm glad to hear all the wonderful comments about nurses.  My daughter is a school nurse at a middle school in Carrollton.  Her days get to be quite exciting some days.

During the years that my sister was sick she spent a lot of time at Medical City and the great majority of those nurses were just wonderful.  However, I suspect I wouldn't have had as good treatment as she did as I think I'm probably a far worse patient than my sister was.  That probably has something to do with it.

Last year I had hand surgery at Carrell Clinic in Dallas.  When I woke up, the recovery room RN said they had a coffeemaker that does individual cups of coffee, and what flavor would I like.  When I was ready to go home, she pushed me in a wheelchair out to the car, gave me her card and said to call her if I had any questions.  I was home by 9 a.m.  Not critical care, but excellent treatment.  I've had nine hand surgeries, and only one so-so experience with an RN.  She woke me up at 4 a.m. to change out the trashcan in my room.

My stay at Baylor in 1978 was a successful one.. I flew into Dallas in an emergency situation and my Dallas doctor..Dr. Godat performed a procedure to 'correct'  an ectopic pregnancy... He was wonderful and Baylor treated me fine.. That was after my Nashville doctors had misdiagnosed me and were sending me home.. Dr. Godat and Baylor could very well have saved my life.. I wonder if  Dr. Godat is still with us..

I have been in the hospital more times than I want to admit, but most of the time, the nurses are great.  Luckily, I have not be there when it was life or death and I think they tend to those more critical.  Me wanting some cold water is probably not as important as the the patient coding down the hall.  They are over worked and under paid, just like teachers.  When I was 50, I had surgery at Baylor in Dallas and the nurses were so good, I took them flowers when I was able.  They were really appreciative.  A kind word to them does wonders.
