Comments: On a sadder note, Art Linkletter has passed away. He was such an honorable television personality. I think his interviews with the children were hilarious. His type of entertainment is missed. Good bye Art.
Comments: Well said, Sam and Charlotte. The way our country is being (mis)directed is unconscionable. It's easy to say we are getting what the majority voted for, but that doesn't make it any easier to watch us decline while awaiting another election. A conspiracy theorist might say it's all part of a grand design developed by some powerful puppet masters. I have no idea...I just know it's a damn shame! And to use highly technological terms, our political leadership sucks!
Comments: Charlotte, what I think you're expressing is both your frustration that everything, everything is now being politicized, and the fear that the majority of us have for the direction our country is being taken yet thoughts of the deliriously wonderful future most of us want it to have..................It was my personal hope that we could address the crisis that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has created without politicizing it. No such luck. I'm not even convinced that the federal government isn't approaching the solution only after first gleaning all of the political worth out of it that it can...............And the fear I think you feel is because of not only the direction of the country, but how little we as Americans can seemingly do to change it, except vote, and that's a long process. I'm not offering any personal solutions (though I think I know a few), but rather that I think I know why you're feeling what you feel. God Bless America.
Comments: If I have miss-quoted anyone I am sorry....I don't mean to start any political right/left jargon...I am just so worried about our Nation being dragged down a sink hole, drowning in political lifers. And all of the sudden the President calls a hour press conference 5 weeks AFTER the spill? Guess he saw the poles. I am concerned for the animals too. It is a heart wrenching sight to see those oil covered dolphins I assure you. But I am also concerned for those folks who earn their living in our gulf. BTW, why isn't anyone concerned about the ranchers on the border that are slaughtered on their own land? The US is in a state of emergency on many issues and I am worried about the outcome of these issues. It seems politics raises it's ugly head in all too. Sad state of these United States.........and it seems to me we are no longer United.
Comments: Memo to Tenpenny: A front page story in our local newspaper yesterday mentioned that the North Houston Tea Party organization was having infighting amongst its members (over missing or misused funds) and a group of three had split off to form The Woodlands Tea Party. They are seeking donations and office space. Might be your chance to get in on the ground floor and secure a leadership position in this new endeavor. For now, they are meeting at the IHOP on I-45 near Sawdust Road. I am fighting the urge to join up, but you know I love my pancakes ...
Comments: Jack, I don't remember requesting you to stop writing me. I would think it would have been the other way around.
Comments: Why Kathleen, you haven't heard from me because you requested I stop emailing you.
Comments: Charlotte, We do seem to nit pik at each other rather than discuss the issues. I just wish some of you would quit telling me what I said and then misinterpret me. Jud, I saw two interviews with Governor Jendal. The first one was a complacent do nothing governor. The second interview was a fired up governor. I also noticed the citizen (sorry I don't remember his name) standing behind him looking even more angry. I don't think it matters what fired the Guv up, the important part is he is trying to do something NOW. I am just sickened looking at the birds and turtles suffering. If BP cut corners, they need to be held responsible. This type of carelessness should never be allowed to happen again anywhere in the world. . I am just sickened looking at the birds and turtles suffering. If BP cut corners, they need to be held responsible. This type of carelessness should never be allowed to happen again.
Comments: Cousin Johnny, while people are on here blaming "W" for everything, including the recent oil spill, and being generally confused, I have a plan. Could we convert the aft cabin of your 42' Hatteras to an oil holding tank, tune up your Kirby vacuum cleaner, and go suck oil out of the gulf. My legal analysis is that it would be free oil, just floating, and not subject to paying a royalty, so we'd get to keep 100% of whatever we capture and sell. With oil at about $74, we could make a killing, and save the coastline too............Jud, re-check those immigrant stipulations if you would. Maybe we can get an exemption.
Comments: Kathleen, you also made a derogatory comment about Louisiana Governor Jindal. The man has done everthing possible from day one to get BP and this administration to act responsibly and quickly. He was not "pushed " by the citizens of the state. A good example of being pushed is Obama's sudden concern (after seeing the polls). Please be fair in your assessments. It is OK to concede that Obama may not be the man you thought he was. What politician has ever lived up to that kind of hype?
Comments: What does that have to with today? Let's be fair and balanced? oh, please.... I don't get why we go back and forth this way....NOW is what is happening NOW and we are witnessing the product of the administration that won that election not the one that ran. President Obama is now blaming his own review board for not acting fast enough.....and of course just quoted Sarah for saying "drill baby, drill" because he would have never said that because he knew the risk..........! Now the President is talking about "this" Arizona law and calling it a boycott...wha????? This is our leader!
Comments: Charlotte, Do you happen to know how much BP contributed to the McCain Campaign?
Comments: Well, if it isn't my old pen pal Jack. I haven't heard from you in quite a while. I did hear last night that the requirement of an environmental study was waived. The requirement was waived because this is a time of crisis. As for seeing the light, I try to be issue driven. I don't follow instructions or take orders from any group.
Comments: Hmmm I see the President is addressing the oil spill...........side stepping a little? Saying we do not know the facts....well I know one is that BP...donated 80K to his campaign....President is blaming the regulator's over site. Oh my....blame blame........ step up to do something about it NOW! He is blah blahing now about how he cares and number one wants to protect Americans in the places they live.......hmmmmm...guess that doesn't include Arizona. BTW...I think it was more than age that has treated Joe roughly...........haaaaaaaaaaaa!
Comments: Sounds as if Kathleen is beginning to see the light. FYI, the feds are blocking the states from acting. Requiring a EPA statement before they dump sand in the gulf to create temporary barrier islands to block the oil. What kind of effect can dumping sand in the gulf have??
Comments: Jud, The whole point of what I was saying is that I am shocked and disappointed in both administrations. In times of crisis I expect the government to fulfill it's role and protect the interests of the American people.
Comments: Hmmm, Kathleen. Apparently you expected Bush to act in a more timely manner, so you were "shocked" that he didn't. So I guess that you did NOT expect Obama to act in a timely manner, so you merely "wonder." I guess you can't be shocked if your expectations were met.
Comments: I saw Joe Cocker's performance last night. He's still got it. I remember when he was soooooooooooo good looking. Eek. The years have treated him roughly.
Comments: My American Idol is Joe Cocker. Oh, wait, he's British! The original Mad Dog and Englishman indeed.
Comments: Lylnell, I was shocked when the Bush Administration took its sweet time in helping the citizens of New Orleans and the other victims of hurricane Katrina. Now, I am wondering what is going on with the Obama Administration because they are not more involved. Carville makes this quite clear. He is begging the Obama Administration to get involved. They should not only be involved but they should be treating this situation as a crime scene and investigate what happened. After all, twelve people were killed in the explosion and if only half of what is being said is true, BP is in real trouble. Our government's handling of these two incidents doesn't make me feel very confident in our Federal Government when it comes to handling a crisis. It seems like their philosophy must be every man for himself.
Comments: I wonder where our Federal Gov't is in all this. This mess could really screw up the Gulf, not to mention the seafood industry. Oh, well. Guess State dinners are higher priority. BP has put in millions. Shoulda been billions, in my opinion.
Comments: Charlotte, It looks like BP is pumping mud into a pipe to plug up the oil spill. I sure hope this works. I noticed the people of Louisiana have finally pushed Governor Jindal into doing something to protect their coastline. Poor Louisiana: that state has been through so much the last couple of years.
Comments: Hi...Everybody...! Can't go to Louisiana... but I'm volunteering to be a weekly volunteer at the VA Hospital.. We 'little old ladies'...Adam Dale Chapter..DAR members... do that every March but there's some of the DAR...that do it on a regular basis.. I'm going to Orientation on June 2nd... Since I have back trouble, I hope the back will hold up for 4 hours at a time... (Physical Therapy resumes on June 3) Since I couldn't get Combat Pay and Veterans Benefits as a Public School Teacher, do you think they might give me Veterans Benefits as a Volunteer...?
Comments: I am soooo upset about this oil spill too. Some of the people with the shelter I am associated with in Houston, Friends For Life, are being trained to rescue dolphins. It is a very involved training and they will work very hard 24/7 out in fumes and sludge until there is a solution for this situation. I am donating $ to support them, but I feel helpless and so do they. It takes special people who are willing to spend the time to dedicate the time to be trained and then search for them 24/7 to rescue them.
Comments: Kathleen, for one thing, I wondered why the boxlike device they initially lowered over the blowout was a square box instead of being shaped like a funnel. I'm no geologist or physicist or anything other than a SOC graduate, but the shape of that dome thing made no sense to me. No wonder it failed. The whole thing is sickening.
Comments: After watching the most recent update on what British Petroleum is doing to curtail the oil spill, it left me upset as I am sure all of you are. If there is anything that can be done to save the habitats along the Gulf of Mexico, I wish someone would step forward and try to come up with a solution. There must be a safe way to soak up the oil. I know they used hay a few years ago in Santa Barbara when they had an oil spill there. i always use baby powder to remove oil from my clothes. It is hard to believe that we aren't moving heaven and earth to protect our environment. Do any of you have a solution to this mess?
Comments: It was not a great day fish-wise, but we did catch a few. We had fun. There were a few big boats that planned to go offshore, but that wasn't happening on Saturday. It would have been a wild ride! We could see the waves breaking at Pass Cavallo from several miles away.
Comments: Good work, Barry! Now for the important question - did you put 'em on any fish?
Comments: Warriors Weekend was a huge success. Nearly 300 wounded troops came to Port O'Connor for a weekend of fishing and eating. My friend and I took two really nice guys out for the day. One had been in a HumVee that was blown up by a roadside bomb in Afganastan. 6 of the 8 aboard were killed. Ironically, one of the fatalities was from Port O'Connor and he got to meet the soldier's parents. The other soldier was a 22 year veteran that had served in Desert Storm and Iraq. The chemicals from Desert Storm destroyed his liver and he has 20 some odd pins and screws in his right leg. He started having seizures when in Iraq. They were two of the most polite and upbeat people I have been around in a long time. How they stay that way after all they've been through is a mystery to me. And, they both wish that they could go back. They were both from the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
Comments: Some of you may remember Skip Benson from the '64 class. His father passed away over the weekend. Funeral will be Wednesday at Laurel Land. Info is on their site. Please keep him in your prayers. Thanks. |
