Michael Ann, it's so nice to see you post here.  Robert Gann was a smart, nice SOC boy like so many.  I remember him very well, and not just because I graduated between him and Marsha Gentle -- something that's not lost on me.  Both of them are gone now and both were smarter and probably nicer, and here I am still kicking.

I called Robert to invite him to a reunion, probably our 40th.  He was so nice, but he said he was not up to it physically.  I know he passed right after I called him, and I feel sure he is in the place where nice, sweet guys go.

Maybe someone else has more information.  I'm sorry that's all I can offer you.

I was in lovely, scenic Waco, Tx.. in 64. I don't remember snow falling at Baylor..
Weather fronts came through on the weekend. It was always raining when I walked to the music school and Roxy Grove Hall. Don't remember snow..
Chili...I checked on line with the CASI site. That 's the chili organization that Frank Tolbert started. I didn't like their chili recipes from Terlingua..They put a lot of spices in with the meat.. Only a few use onions..some tomatoes..It's mainly meat, water, when needed and a lot of spices, which they do in sections...called dump 1, dump2, etc. etc.
I was not impressed. CASI has contests all over the country..They just had one, down the road in Hernando, Miss.. I hope all those chili' people don't...cook their chili like that.. CASI...means Chili Appreciation Society International..
What I know about Terlingua, it is a barren wasteland..
Making eggrolls...tonight.. Nihau...everybody..I think that's 'hello'.

Hi, to everyone in the Class of 63! You have a great new guestbook, so colorful. And I won't run out of chili recipes now...Hope you are no longer snowbound and are now warming up. Here in Albuquerque we are expecting a little snow tomorrow, I think.

Phil Pelch, hi, my mother used to mention to me every time she ran into you someplace---she passed away in 2004.

Would someone share some information about the passing of Robert Gann SOC '63? I only just noticed him on your In Memoriam list, has he been gone long? He had been married to my dear friend Betsy Scott SOC' 65 who died in 1986. Knowing a bit about his passing would be some closure related to Betsy as well.

Thanks,
Michael Ann Block

I remember that snow of '64.  Before it hit,Sandy Hentchel and I went to Ward Drug and bought supplies, then went to her house and both of us bleached our hair.  Hers came out much better than mine.  Note to self: don't experiment with hair color while snowed in.

I remember a big snowfall in '64, but it was early in the year and I was a freshman at UT so I didn't see it.

I remember, snow of 64, I was commuting to UTA and foolishly risked life and limb to go to class only to find they were cancelled. I spent most of the morning playing bridge in the student center with the other stupid commuters!

I remember getting a picture from home of the '64 snowfall.  I was at Tech at the time.

For limb removal, I would recommend Sam Hill Tree Care (972) 481-9565.  They are located across the street from my shop and we have used them several times.  Very professional.  Ask for Carmen and tell her I told you to call.

I would like to know if I am the only person who doesn't remember the record snowfall of '64.  We were sophomores in college and I really think I would have remembered that, but I don't.  Also, can anyone recommend a tree service?  I really need some limbs removed before they crash into my roof and I can't get anyone to call me back.  I'm afraid they are too busy.

Do we not hear about homonyms anymore because the word is not politically correct:-)

In the world of early childhood..those minimal words are called 'rhyming words'..
Antonyms, synonyms, I've had to deal with and the terminology..Homonyms is not heard a lot with little kids..Pre-K through 2nd Gr. Minimal, I don't remember ever hearing before..But I am a little old lady..Who knows??

Charlotte,( fyi) in linguistics words that are pronounced the same and are spelled differently are called homonyms. ex hear /here, their/there, dear/deer.
Words that opposite in meaning are called antonyms. good/bad, tall/short...
Words that are the same except for one sound are called a minimal pair ex. Bill/Jill, cat/hat, big/dig.

Yessiree, Charlotte, copying and formatting those 6,000+ entries in the old guestbook was quite a project, but we couldn't lose all that great SOC history.  I will be happy to e-mail a copy to any SOCite who wants one.  It is also available at www.soc63.com on the Fun Things page.

Haaaaaaaaaaaa!  Very funny Phil.

I did read $700,000 in one year is not uncommon for these dog owners to spend promoting their dogs.  Some of these people live in motor homes and drive all over the country doing these shows.......many of them have syndicates backing them too.  Sadie the Scottie was precious, but I am sure she has a BIG tab too.  And there were thousands of these dogs at the Garden.  There were some at our hotel....these dogs are certified as "working dogs" so that they can stay at the nice hotels that don't normally allow dogs...ha ha!  And fly IN the plane at the bulkhead.  These dog folks know the ropes and they get their dogs certified for Hearing dogs etc in order for them to fly with them.

I have heard this saying, "Participation in Cutting Shows is like throwing $1000 bills out the window of the truck every mile on the way to and from a competition." That about describes it..........haaaaaa!!

Charlotte, heard that owners spend up to a $ 100000 on ads promoting their dog, and up to $ 300000 a year in shows. Almost as expensive as cutting horses:-)

Just back from the Big Apple.  The Westminster Dog show was great and I loved seeing all those beautiful and happy dogs that were the top of their breeds.  The precious Scottie was  expected to win since it was the Number One winning dog in the country.  We're talking politics here..........haaaaaaa!!  It is everywhere!  It was cold and windy there and it snowed all day yesterday.  Since we had the down coats and good warm boots we were all fine.  My trip was not quite as exciting as Jud's, but it was fun and special!

Lest anyone think I've been asleep at the stick, I have been busy copying -- cut and paste system -- the old guestbook and have removed all the IP numbers and edited it into a reasonably readable form.  This was the biggest document I ever worked on!

Like the Dead Sea scrolls, start reading at the back and come forward.

To see it, go to the Fun Things page of www.soc63.com and click the link.  If you'd like me to e-mail a copy of this to you, I'll be happy to do so.

Jud,

I thought about your this morning.  There was a news story about a political killing at a Dubai hotel this morning and I thought - gee, when will Jud get back and where you guys caught there during an investigation?

I saw some of the photos on FB someone resulting from someone tagging you.  Looks like you all had a fantastic time.  Cannot wait to see your own photos show up.

Glad you are back and not still there.

Cynthia

Back from the Persian Gulf cruise. Visited Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, Muscat (Oman), and Bahrain. Loved it! What contrasts in culture and scenery. Did a 4x4 dune safari and had dinner in a Bedoin camp, rode camels, feasted nonstop, visited museums and souks (shopping bazaars), was awed by incredible mosques, met lots if interesting people. Beaches are gorgeous, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai are like being in Houston, except larger and newer. Saw the world's tallest building.
I highly recommend this Costa cruise on the Luminosa!
And strangely, there was absolutely no anti-American sentiment. The people were charming, friendly, accomodating, and surprisingly funny. English was the second language everywhere we went.
Each country has a different currency, but they all accept Euros, dollars, Yen, or whatever you have. Keeping up with exchange rates is tricky!

Sounds like the 'Peabody' prices here in Memphis..That's the hotel with the 'duckies' that march down from the penthouse to the lobby every day and swim in the fountain..then march back up in the evening..
Years ago, I kept 2 little girls at the Peabody, off and on for a month. Their dad had a new job at the hotel...We ordered room service.. Grilled cheese sandwiches, hamburgers, fries, fruit and milk.. The bills were alway over a hundred dollars..I always wrote a nice tip for the waiter..It was amazing..!
Memphis had straight line winds back in 03 and it wiped out trees, cars, roofs and sometimes whole houses. People didn't have power for 3 weeks.. It was in the summer..

I got a great Honda generator from Eddie after losing power for days after Katrina....not until everything was ruined in freezer. Not a worry here in Coronado this week..has been in upper 60's to nearly 80.  Lunched at the Del Coronado yesterday, 2 sandwiches and one ice tea...$52.00 {including tip).  Going to La Jolla for lunch today.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we were able to move back into our house this afternoon. It feels so warm and cozy. Our neighborhood website was a godsend because all the neighbors were talking and keeping up with each other. One neighbor was complaining tonight that she felt weird now that the crisis is over and everything is back to normal.
I think I am going to be like Barry and buy a generator. I would like to be prepared for the "end of the world" coming in 2012.

Hi, Skip.  If I still had the red dress, it wouldn't fit!  My mom's power went off early Friday morning.  She had only the little gas wall heater in the bathroom for heat.  She kept telling me that she was fine, but at 4:00 p.m. I called and told her it was the last chance that day, and she said okay.  I picked her up and took her home Saturday about 11:00 a.m.  Still no power, but she was insistent.  Fortunately, her power was restored about 2:00 p.m.  We had several big limbs break off and Steve got the chain saw out and cut them up.  But we have several more that are too high for him to reach.  All in all, we were lucky.
