Comments: We didn't have significant snow, this last weekend..It melted.. Thank you God, Elohim, Yahweh, Buddha, Mohammed and Betty Crocker! Oh and the STARS...too. (Mississippi didn't have that much either..) I really think they could put Haley Barbour, the Ms. Republican governor...in the Funny Farm...! All of Mississippi...may be a Funny Farm!! It's President's Day...the schools are closed and the banks...of course.. I hope the Dallas area...is thawing out..
Comments: I remember when we lived in the old house(nice old house) in the Belmont/Hillsboro neighborhood in Nashville.....we used our nice old 'working' fireplace when life turned cold and the power went off.. That was the first time I hurt my back..My daughter was just born and I was bringing in logs for the fireplace. The heat felt good.. the back trouble didn't..I knew several people in Nashville that purchased generators... We had a whole week of snow days...when they blew up the teacher in space..(Ronald Reagan-Era).. The snow scenes were beautiful in our old neighborhood.. The kids made a tent out of the dining room table equipped with quilts, books and stuffed animals, while we watched the snow come down and the teacher and crew..being blown up... Ah...life and death....are weird, at times...
Comments: This was Joan's lucky year. For Valentine's Day, she got a new generator. We are always loosing power in Southlake, so when it went off Thursday at dinner time, it was no big deal. School was closed Friday, so Joan got to stay home. When I got home Friday afternoon, the lack of electricity was becoming a big deal and Joan was turning a little blue. She tried to go shopping, but couldn't get the garage door open with no power and I doubt that the Mini could have made it through the snow anyway. Finding a generator AFTER the power has been out for 24 hours is no small feat. Northern Tool in Bedford was expecting a load of generators in "about an hour". Not knowing this was Northern Tool time, I made the trek to Bedford at 5PM. The generators showed up at 8:30PM, way to late to put it together and hook it up, so by Sat AM Joan and I were both turning blue. After 2 hours in the cold, dark garage the generator was running. We had lights, fridge, freezer, everything but heat. So then I went looking for an electric space heater. None found, even Northern Tool was out. Our power came back on Sat night, but still no heat. Called our local heat/ac guy Sun afternoon and it was a simple reset switch in the heater that had blown. So life is good. I just hope I get home before the power company sees all the illegal wiring going to the main disconnect. And, I still need to find an electric heater for next time! ![]()
Comments: Cynthia, Thanks for your comments. I am glad Oncor is working somewhere. We have not seen an Oncor truck all day. On our neighborhood website, one of our neighbors posted that he had been told by Oncor that we would have our power back on today. LOL Another neighbor posted that they first needed to send a truck out to out to turn on the power. Lakewood also has a lot of houses without power. All is not bad, the restaurants in our area are doing a booming business.
Comments: Kathleen, I was so blessed to some some minor inconveniences getting home on Thursday evening including digging my way into my garage for an hour but kept all the power. My Brother and Sister-in-law had no power until 11:00 this morning and the crews were in full force in Cedar Hill on their street then. Needless to say they were not very happy about the situation feeling they were the last of the people to get power back. They and their 2 dogs stayed with me for the last 2 nights and were relieved to go back home today. We went to Caryn's parents for lunch today in Arlington. There were only 2 houses in the cul-de-sac they live in that never lost power and they were blessed to be one of them. OnCor and another vendor were at the end of the block working on that issue when we got there and gone before we left. We also passed a carivan of 17 power trucks heading east on H20 as we went there. They were not Oncor but I would guess they were back up troops. Needless to say, if you are out and hearing about others being restored and no one to talk to Oncor but a machine, it is a difficult situation. I think my Brother has intensions of talking to alive person or 2 or 3 this week about that machine stuff. I hope your heat is back pretty quick now. Take care. Cynthia
Comments: Lynell, my friend had sold a puppy to a breeder who was showing the dog and she swore they had dyed the bitch's (dog language) ears black to make them look even. Blow drying and grooming is a given until they walk into the ring. The pets are fed special diets, exercised regularly and the owners talked about them like they were their children. They were also pretty "catty" about the competition.
Comments: Cathy, I cannot imagine what breeders do to make their dogs look pretty, but I have been to cat shows and observed people blow-drying their cats. I don't have the nerve to try that with ours. I'm still recovering from the bath I administered when they got into paint last year. John, you should clear some space for those presents from jet-setter Charlotte. Now, take Dru somewhere nice this afternoon.
Comments: Are any of you without electricity? I hope not. We have had our lights off since Thursday night and they are still off. Our house is freezing. Let's just say I am not a happy camper. I hope Oncor gets the lights on today. I am so tired of calling their voice message trying to get an estimate of when the power will be restored. I guess they know not to give us a live person.
Comments: And Ouida! I'm sorry I left you off my list, Ouida Ruth.
Comments: Well, I feel like I got off light for Valentine's Day this year. All Dru requested was a gift certificate for one hour with a marriage counselor! I hope Charlotte brings me a present from the Big Apple. (insert imaginary smiley face here)
Comments: Hollie and Skip, nice to see you posting here. Happy Valentine's Day to all you SOC sweeties, and a special wish for a good day to Martha, Brenda and Jewell. ![]() ![]() ![]() Growing up, I remember these dog breeds: big, little, black, brown, white, slick and fuzzy. We were a long way from Westminster!
Comments: Sharon"Red" Reeves,So good to see you're still in area.Do you still have that red dress? You know , the one I thought you wore backwards?Ha!
Comments: One of the gals going with me has shown Goldens for years and knows the ropes. She's not showing there this time, but we will get to go behind the scenes too. I have done that at the huge show here in Houston at Reliant Center and you are so right.......these dogs are pampered. And, I love seeing all the different breeds.....some I have never seen.........cool! I am excited!
Comments: Happy Birthday Daddy! I know you are up in heaven, but I wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday and let you know how very much I miss you. I think of you every day and wish we could have had more time with you. I hope that y'all are able to celebrate, maybe even with a monkey cake, just like we would if you were here. I love you, Daddy. Love, Hollie
Comments: Charlotte, I went to the Westminster Dog Show in Madison Square Garden several years ago, with a friend of mine who was showing her prized Corgi. We had the best time. I was backstage and enjoyed talking to the breeders, judges and even the press. It is amazing what some dog owners do to make their dogs look good. At times, I thought children should be pampered and loved the way these dogs were treated.. I know you will have a great time and do wear you deb hat.
Comments: Charlotte, you amuse me so. Cheap trip to the Big Apple?? You?? Remember Lisa on Green Acres? THUH STORES!! Y'all have fun. I'll look for you on TV!! Wear your Deb hat so we can spot you in the crowd.
Comments: I am packing my down and headed for NYC in the morning. Five girlfriends and I are going to the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden Monday and Tuesday. We were offered tickets to this sold out event and on a whim decided to go! Crazy? ha! We were able to get cheap round trip air fare too. I have always loved watching this show on TV. Oh, and I just might do a l-t-t-l-e shopping too.(there goes the cheap part)..ha! Happy Love Day tomorrow! ![]()
Comments: oops! 1 lb. or more of 85% lean ground beef
Comments: This new guest book is a hoot. Nice job. 1. Ditto on the three trips to the dish last night. 2. My big dog (120 lbs.) just stood in the middle of the back yard and ate the snow. 3. Didn't have chili last night (although I do like mine with pintos). Had large pork loin chops with a garlic and spicey honey mustard rub. mmmmmmm... 4. Lost power at about 11:45 PM and still is not back on. No heat...just replaced the gas valve and control circuit board in the furnace and cannot use it. No fun at all. Stay safe, stay warm.
Comments: Correction:...The book, "Chili Madness" is by Jane Butel. She just refers to Frank Tolbert who has gone to that great Chili Parlor in the 'sky'... My recipe, which has been altered(added more spices)by now, is printed in the Judson Baptist Church 75th Anniversary Cookbook...Nashville, Tn.. Thank God, I changed the recipe! I added the appropriate amount of spices (the recipe is still evolving). ***Always trying to be factual, with a few slipups.. A can of ground beef? I'll look for it on the shelf at my local store....
Comments: Lynell...Lynell....there are 2 (two) schools of thought on this bean in chili business..I've keyed in on enough chili cookoff 'thingys' now, to realize it... I picked up a used Frank Tolbert Chili Cookbook at the Memphis Public Library Used Book Sale, several years back.. The same holds true...there.. Frank Tolbert aka Tolbert's Texas was a friend of my grandfather's, so I hear (Bro. Bill Harrod). Frank had a cafe in downtown Dallas... Beans or no Beans... both will say they're right!. It's like the Pre-millenialist and the Post-Millenialist in the Southern Baptist World of Yore.. I don't listen to any of them.....anymore! (I probably misspelled the 'Pre and Post' stuff but I don't care..Those of us that like Beans...use them..(just not Kidney Beans) These Memphis people think Kidney Beans are wonderful! Occasionally, when I'm trying to be extra funny..I say to them, "Davy and Sam came to Texas to help us out..I'm returning the favor.." Remember the Alamo!! (and Mier, Mexico...)
Comments: The chili recipes are keeping me hungry! But y'all forgot to include the ample serving of Fritos on the side. Ronnie Jones, how nice of you to cross over Illinois St. into Bear territory. ![]() Leave it to one of you smooth Adamson boys to warm us up with that beautiful fireplace on a snowy night. I can almost hear Johnny Mathis when I look at that fire. Got any Annie Greensprings? It should go well with a bowl of Texas Red. BTW, chili should not have beans, but it needs lots of cumin and chili powder. Ronnie, come back often and as my aunt used to say, "Come back when you can stay longer" -- and bring your Leopard buddies, too. This is the prettiest snow I've ever seen. I hope I still feel that way when it starts to melt off the flat portion of our roof!
Comments: Phil, where can I buy "1 can of ground beef" for that chili receipe?
Comments: Ditto on the 2 tblspns of chili powder, maybe 3.. 3 tspns of cumin tblspn of oregano.. 3 garlic cloves. 1 onion 2-3 celery stalks 1-3 jalepenos, serranos or whatever some cayenne bell pepper, poblano 1/2 - 1cup Large can 28 oz. crushed/ pureed tomatoes. parsley, salt and pepper 2-3 can of pinto beans, black beans (Lordy, no...kidney beans!) and of course 1-2 lbs. of browned, ground chuck, turkey or chicken water in tomato can..however much you want to add.. I thicken with cornmeal and some flour.. (I also use leftover pintos that I have cooked to go with cornbread on a previous day) I'm going to add wine to it one of these days..No rattlesnake, however ***Quit climbing on ladders during snowstorms! Hain't ya'll got no sense??
Comments: Greetings SOCites I like your new message area and wanted to leave you something to keep everyone warm on this cold snowy night. Many of you helped the late Charles Hardt and I start-up our sites first guestbook. Looks as if there will be more cold weather coming tomorrow. I hope everyone is getting to enjoy the view I saw while out this afternoon. The trees are loaded with snow. It's almost like a postcard in spots. All keep warm and be healthy and thank you for visiting our web site and supporting the (what I call) message area. BTW I think I heard on the car radio Washington (DC) broke its snowfall record; way up there such as 50 inches or greater.
Comments: Forgot shredded cheese on top after you put in your bowl!
Comments: new format somehow sent prior to completion! As I was saying, Sam,I also favor beans 1 can ground beef or more if beanless 1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes 2 15 oz. cans Ranch Style beans 1 small can green chilies 1 small chopped onion 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 dried smoked serrano pepper cumin to taste and garlic powder brown beef drain grease add all ingredients simmer 2 hours Been eating this recipe for over 35 years!
Comments: Sam, I also put Ranch Style beans in our chili, as I like Ranch style beans. My recipe; I lb. ground beef I can Ro-Tel tomatos 1 small can green chilies
Comments: Sam, Darlin,.."That's your misfortune"(Gone with the wind)...did you eat Frito Pie back in high school at SOC? Well, I did and my Frito Pie back then did not have beans .....We ate BEANS...a lot... but with salad and corn bread. I guess I am just toooooo much of a red neck!!
Comments: Bill, I just made my 7th trip up the ladder to wipe the snow from the dish. We have a walkout balcony out of the upstairs guest bedroom. The balcony is on top of the Porto cochere. I go out that door, then climb up an extended ladder. The dish is attached on an eve that I could only reach from the ground with a hydraulic lift otherwise. Thank goodness for the balcony. Charlotte, I guess I've always eaten my Texas chili wrong then, because Anita has always put beans in it. I'm unrepentent about it, however. Officially 7.9 inches of snow at DFW right now. Broke the previous all time one day record of 7.8 inches. I agree with you Bill about the snow. As Pa Kettle said, "That's enough kids". |
