Comments: Kathleen: I can only answer relating to the Wounded Warriors Weekend in Port O'Connor. As I understand it, there are Wounded Warrior groups all over the country and I do not know how the others are structured. But the one in POC is all volunteer and all of the donated money goes to the conduct of the event. Soldiers coming to POC come primarily from Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio and Ft. Campbell, KY. The Ft. Campbell soldiers are flown to Houston. Wounded Warriors-POC (WW) pays for buses to transport the soldiers to POC from Houston and San Antonio, Many of the soldiers have either care givers or family members with them. WW pays for lodging and meals for the soldiers in either Victoria, Port Lavaca, Seadrift or POC. This past May, there were over 400 soldiers that came to POC, along with family and caregivers. That's a lot of people. As far as I know, there are no paid positions at WW. There are volunteers from across the country. Local businesses provide both monetary support and door prizes for the dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. There are some national companies that provide support, ie., Academy Sports. If you have never been to one of these events, do yourself a favor and plan to attend. These soldiers are able to go to several similar events during the year, but they all say that they have never felt as appreciated as they feel in POC and they all want to come back the following year. Hope this answers your question.
Comments: Lynell, I have been working on a similar invention for the Boy Scouts and other hikers. The concept is to manufacture little packets of "dehydrated water" to carry in your backpack. Then when you get to your camping destination, you just open the packet and add a gallon of water and you're set!
Comments: Thanks for the info.
Comments: Thank you, Claudia! I'll go back to the '62 site and look some more. I appreciate the info. You're an angel for letting us know.John Southworth, your extravagant gift from me is headed your way via US Mail. I know you're hoping for this: ![]() It isn't that, but it's something almost as good.
Comments: Go to SOC63.com and there are links to the other classes ;-)
Comments: I'm sure I've seen em before but how do I locate the URLs for other SOC year sites, like perhaps 64 and 65 if they are available? Thanks.
Comments: Lynelle, the videos under the "friends for life tab" are from the 45th. The new video is on our home page. It is also on our facebook page South Oak Cliff High School 1962. Apart from the video we have posted photos (duplicates of the video plus some). We invite you all to come check it out! If you click the "Like" button, you will get updates when they are posted. Join us there and just scroll down to the photo album SOC '62 50th Reunion (201 photos)! https://www.facebook.com/SOC62?fref=ts We missed seeing your sweet faces this round. Hope you will join us next time!
Comments: I agree Kathleen. I donate to Wounded Warriors often. I only wish there ha been this kind of support for our Vietnam Veterans.
Comments: I have a question for Barry Gibbs (not meant to be a political question) but I would like to know who supports the Wounded Warrior Group. I see a lot of ads requesting donations, but to whom would I be sending the donation. After seeing so many disabled soldiers, it seems like a wonderful cause.
Comments: Okay, I have to ask..Why Plasticville..? The suspense is killing me.. Well, not really, but I read JS's last post again and I have to know..
Comments: Lynell, the "locals" do call it Thuh Woodlands. Folks in Conroe call it Plasticville. Our house is so large I can't remember if we have a fireplace? Next time I'm in that wing, I will check (har-har). ps - please don't ship me any cat photos.
Comments: Oops. I meant Woodlandsly -- or is it The Woodlandsly? Do the locals call it Thuh Woodlands? Just curious.
Comments: John, I want you for campaign manager. I can do better than some nincompoops in various offices, regardless of party. I have a very fine gift that for you that will wing its way Woodlandly as soon as I can find a box for it. You might want to clear an area over your fireplace. Hint: I hope you don't already have one.
Comments: As Ginger said, "We Want Lynell!" (although I think her campaign is in need of a "reset")
Comments: Oops, I used the wrong word..That's won't.. I always edit, after the fact. Bob Baker would not be happy..!
Comments: No, we want Lynell.. Everybody's opinions are 'set'..at our age.. We run them off sometimes over here. It's a shame when people 'take their toys and go home'.. I don't like it..for whatever the reason.. I'm not getting my own website now.. Maybe later I'll get Jason to do that.. Barry has his own..website. Haven't been there yet, however.. I hate it that it's warming up..I like the cooler weather..
Comments: What great videos from the Class of '62 50th Reunion! Those kids look great and can sure cut a rug. To see them, go to their website (link is on our home page.) The videos are under the Friends for Life tab. Lookin' good, '62ers!
Comments: Our 50th was a real blast and the Remember When event was an emotional knock out. We had a great time, to bad we did not get any of the '63 Class. Check out the video pictures Claudia put up on the site. And lighten up on our web site you gals, we just believe in free speech, and at last count had at least as many posters as you do here(I've even seen Barry, Tanya, and even Lynell there from time to time)....maybe more, so as far as running people off the site.....well, we'll take free speech over censorship every time, even on our Guest Book...we promise not to bite!!! Hi Charlotte we missed seeing you!
Comments: Y'all, please play nice. This includes sending private e-mails to people. Your comments and suggestions are your own, so I'm very glad you are signing your names on here. I really suggest you get your own website to opine on. I will repeat for the zillionth time: You're not going to make any converts on here, more than likely. Everyone seems to have his/her mind made up, so please put a sock in it.
Comments: Please don't discuss politics here. Sign your name, and keep your politics on FB -- or better yet, get your own website and proselytize all you want to. Can't imagine why anyone would engage in conversation about anything with a die-hard believer, because it won't be a conversation but a preaching. I gave up on this many years ago. Charm school was right. Say, "That's nice." It's way more charming than some of the alternatives that pop into my head now and then.
Comments: Yes, Barry just sent me a 'hostile' email... They do get mad, don't they..?? SOC 62 really does have a nice bunch of people... You just don't see them on their website.. I stopped going over there.. Apparently, Barry has a lot of friends over there that caused him to take 'offense' at my remarks. Do you think he'll send you a hostile email...? I doubt it.. And I was 'so sharing with him' when I sent him the Big Bird cartoon.. He's just not grateful... (sigh)

Comments: Now, Char...those '62' people get way, way political as well as being very pro, pro gun.. I wouldn't 'dare' show up there.. They might 'tar and feather' me.. There are very nice people from that year. The good old boys probably showed up.. I'm glad Boude Storey and SOC organizations...were so well represented.. Was Vickie 'Bear'....there..?? No more Big Bird...huh..???
Comments: Listen guys and gals....facts are fine..as in liking something, but you know who you all are ......the same ones over and over......Any other discussion.....ie taxes , candidates etc.... should go to FB or personal emails. Did anyone that reads here go t the 62 reunion? AND did any of you take photos? I saw a few on FB and it looked fun. There were uniforms majorettes and drill teams from Jr highs and SOC. COOL!
Comments: Barry, the money we spend on PBS is the people's tax money and they can spend the money the way Congress and the people predispose. I would much prefer my tax dollar being spent on improving the educational level of our children and the infrastructure of the country than on the excessive amount we spend on the military. We need to spend our tax dollars educating our children and doing what is best for the American tax payer. I am sick of the scare tactics that some groups employ so they can steal the people's money. You should check to see how wealthy the top 2% are and how they have raided the middle class. Since we are not suppose to discuss politics, this is my final comment. I just think we should all aree to disagree.
Comments: Czarina, rina...Delete one of these messages (including this one). I made my point, once. Don't need to say it again...
Comments: Don't mess with PBS, Sesame Street or anything to do with PBS.. Really, leave Big Bird and everybody else on that network alone.. Bad statement by 'you know who?'.. Barry likes 'you know who?'... Just sayin.... Quit it Barry! Haven't I said that before..? (He's just following up on the Bill Day cartoon I sent him...)

Comments: Kathleen: No one is cancelling Big Bird. One of the presidential candidates proposed that it is not a function of the federal government to subsidize PBS. If they can continue to get private funding and survive, great. But you will not find any mandate for the government to use federal tax dollars to fund a TV network. Just one of the many things that our government is involved in that is not authorized in the Constitution. This is also just a fact and should not be considered political.
Comments: It's International Indigenous Peoples' Day..(instead of Columbus Day, since he killed and roasted Indians over 'an open fire',we should play down the 'Columbus Day'..) |
