Comments: We seem to have hit a dead end again on the guest book. The only thing that is bothering me now is this cold weather. It seems like I am having a hard time staying warm. Oh! and that someone is considering canceling Big Bird. I love Big Bird and I think children's programs do a wonderful job teaching children how to read. I hope no one says this is political statement because I don't mean it to be. I think of it more as a fact.
Comments: Ginger's comments brought to mind the Woody Allen comedy Sleeper, in which he plays the owner of a health food store who is frozen -- wrapped in foil, naturally -- and wakes up in the future, only to learn that his beloved health food is now condemned as harmful, while cheeseburgers and fries have been declared to be the healthiest foods. If only!
Comments: Is anyone going to the Oct get together for 62 or 66 What: Fall Mini Get-Together for SOC 66ers & Friends! Where: Hyatt Hotel on Campbell Rd in Richardson (NE corner of Campbell & Hwy 75 in the bar area)
When: Between 2:00 - 6:00pm Saturday Oct. 6, 2012
Comments: Brenda, My grandmother from Killeen lived on Dr. Pepper. I think she followed the 10, 2 and 4 times, which were the times you were supposed to drink Dr. Pepper. I remember the Dr. Pepper plant was in Waco and later moved to Dallas. She also liked to croquet and make quilts while she dipped snuff and drank Dr. Pepper. When she wasn't doing the above with her friends, she played Dominoes and Moon. No one considered her odd.
Comments: I have friends in their 60's, 70's...that only drink chocolate milk.. Of course, one of those friends has never seen a Star Wars Movie and doesn't like Rock and Roll..! Now that 'one' is not normal.. I have my coffee and then a little later, I have a glass of iced tea... I like the sodas, but try to stay away from them, as a rule, but I do cheat, occasionally. Not a breakfast item..for me. We all have our preferences..
Comments: Guess I am not normal...have never liked coffee...love the smell but can't handle the taste...I wake up with Dr Pepper...am I the only one???
Comments: I do agree with you JS.. Have to have the 2 cups of coffee. There was a time that they(medical profession) said coffee might have something to do with breast cancer and now, in the past few years, they've said that coffee might be helpful in fighting against breast cancer. Wait long enough and they, whoever they are, will change their minds about everything.. I'd keep the coffee, if I could.. The 'soy milk' people want to convince everyone that dairy products are harmful to all of us.. I say, be patient, sit back and wait, and another 'expert opinion' will come out. Our world is funny like that.
Comments: Memo to Linda K. Wright: I'd have to get a "second opinion" if my doctor said "no coffee for the rest of your life". Some days coffee is all that makes Life worth livin'. I hope you heal up fast!
Comments: Or sumpin' else!
Comments: Phyllis, how sweet to think I may be doing something gracefully, since gracefulness was never one of my strong points. I know how blessed I am to have relatively good health, and to have been pretty smart about running my life -- other than some dopey decisions now and then. We have lived in the most incredible of times. We had the best free public education ever offered kids, and most of us have done our best with it. Thank you, DISD teachers of the Fifties and Sixties! This time of year has always been my favorite. I hope all SOCites are enjoying the less-than-horrible temps and the prospect of rain now and then. In my opinion, I think the Class of '63 is sumpin'.
Comments: Well, we certainly are all getting old, hopefully gracefully. But, think back -- while we still can -- of our concepts back in high school as to what it would be like to be 67 years old, versus the present-day reality. Isn't 67 the new 57? (Please feel free to substitute your own corny platitude.) We have lived through some incredible times, surely the most action-packed era of World history thus far, containing numerous transformative events, and it's harder than ever to predict what challenges the future will bring. Growing old may -- at times -- stink, but it always beats the alternative of not being blessed to survive this long. It's a beautiful time of year, with State Fair days and high school football nights. Our senses quicken, and sap starts to flow, and I'm happy to simply be alive and a miniscule part of it all.
Comments: The only thing I can add to this conversation, at the moment is... I slept on an air mattress Friday night, in Meridian, Tx at the 'old Hopson Homestead'.. The air mattress was fine. It had a home made quilt on it..to add softness, but the problem was 'Getting Up Off' of the mattress and the floor.! I had to be close enough to a rocker or other piece of furniture, to pull myself...up.. The knees, the knees, and then waking up in Ft Worth after sleeping in a regular bed and feeling extra soreness because of the air mattress activity.. Yep, I'm old. Can't do anything about that.. I have lots of company in the 'old neighborhood department', however..
Comments: Well guess I am going to have to admit that I am getting old...my grand daughter that I raised is going to have a baby..yep..makes me a great grandma..old!!! Actually a friend asked me about 20 years ago how to avoid the aging process...I said she could die now and not get any older...she didn't seem to appreciate my humor...so actually old is not so bad...we are still kicking!!
Comments: I had bladder surgery last Tuesday Sept 25th, better known as pelvic reconstructive surgery. I spent one night in the hospital. My 1st checkup was today & I am doing ok. I am sore as expected. The surgery was robotic, so the incisions are tiny. I am on FMLA until Nov. The doc listed my restrictions that I am to follow for the rest of my life. I can only drink 6 cups of liquid a day & no more than 1 cup at a time. No coffee, no tea, no sodas. Only water, milk or juice. Losing weight would be fine, but I am not to gain any due to the mesh used. Currently I am not to lift over 5lbs & after my 6 wk checkup, my limit will be 15lbs. I am encouraged to walk, but no 5 mile hikes. I am off pain meds & suppose to get lots of rest, to get well to return to work in Nov. I work in an office, so by then I will be fine to continue working. I love my job as a hospital negotiator representing numerous insurance carriers. Our daughter flew in from Alaska to keep me company for a couple of weeks. She is diabled due to spinal stenois but can drive. My hubby has diabetes, a tremor and COPD. Thank goodness that we have a huge freezer full of meals to pop in the microwave. Things will get better soon. We might make to the State Fair in a few weeks. Senior Day is on Thursdays. I have a small scooter to use and our daughter has her electric wheelchair. She can walk but uses the chair for longer adventures. Between the 3 of us, we currently make 1 whole person.
Comments: It's one of my groups..so no worry. I just click on the group, to the left of my News Feed..That's the way I do it, Kathleen.. I don't know how Barry gets there..? Let him figure it out.. If he's on FB, he ought to be able to find it by typing in the name in the Search Bar.. Maybe there's 10,000 Prayer Rooms on FB..!
Comments: Ginger, you have to go to facebook and then pull up the Prayer Room. This seems to be the best I can do for you Barry. I think your inbox may be full because your emails keep coming back.
Comments: SOCPrayerPraise@groups.facebook.com Kathleen, Where did you get that other 'thingy'..? Okay, now 'what's' wrong with matching shirts..? We just had matching t-shirts at our 95th Hopson Reunion.. Looked mighty impressive to me..
Comments: For those who would like to join the SOC PrayerRoom on Facebook please click on this link: https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/SOCPrayerPraise/?fref=ts
Comments: Sorry, but they were groups of 10 or 12 in those shirts.
Comments: There were those matching 'Steady Shirts'...
Comments: Yes, Charlotte! I saw that. Lots of little groups of kids wore matching t-shirts. I saw only one woman in high heels. There were lots of kids there from Mesquite, all cute as pie. At the bird show, three girls sat in front of us and giggled. Took me back a ways! One had pink hair, and one had a nose ring. I thought how wise they are, because hair gets replaced every year or so, and that nose ring can go away and nobody will ever know. I was impressed to see how many dads were out there with their families. But, alas, David fell in love with the 2013 Toyota Avalon.
Comments: Were any of the kids walking around dressed alike? I remember doing that in Jr High at the Fair with Ouida. We were in Bermuda shorts and knee socks. Oh my, we thought we were so cute. Ouida, can you remember who else dress alike with us? Now, when I see couples doing that I laugh...it seems so dorky now....but we didn't think so then.
Comments: Drat it, Phillip Pelch (almost-birthday boy). David and I went to the fair and didn't get a fried pie. Sure sounds good. We did have a big Greek salad and a huge free Frito chili pie. Never knew the State Fair to give away food! The bird show was excellent as always, even though the Ferris Wheel wasn't working. They always release a big bird from the top of that giant wheel. We even got a seat in the shade! It was high school day for many schools. We saw lots of cute kids walking around having fun and laughing. Lots of memories were being made.
Comments: Barry Gibbs, I have repeatedly tried to email you the link to the Prayer Room, but it keeps coming back. I left a phone message to Betty Gibbs to post the link on the SOC '63 website. She is so busy, if anyone else could do it I would appreciate it. Otherwise: Look up The Prayer Room on facebook or Betty Gibbs on facebook snd you should be able to pull it up. You could also try to send me another email address..
Comments: It says on FB...that Wednesday, October 3....is Phillip Pelch's birthday.. Happy Birthday...Phillip..!
Comments: If you go the State Fair, stop by my buddy's Fried Pie stand! This is a shameless plug. He owns Baker's Ribs and we just returned from Texas Monthly BBQ Festival.
Comments: Donna, May I just say one more time what a delight it is to find you posting on here? Your story about crochet is fascinating. I always wondered how those patterns were made -- not that I could ever follow one. The only things I ever crocheted could mercifully be called "cups" because they always rolled up around the edges. I think it's wonderful how we have formed so many true lifelong friendships from those days so long ago. Seems like we all remember the smell of a Crayola melting in the radiator, the stairs to the lunchroom at SOC (that were for up traffic only). So many memories from those days!
Comments: Hello, Kathleen, I remember you like it was yesterday. Your smile would light up the room and you were always thoughtful and a great help in times of trouble. I was a dunce when it came to math and I was more into reading books than I was with book reports! You are on our prayer list concerning your Kidney troubles. My Daddy, Gordon Gwin, had Buerger's disease (caused by smoking) and End-Stage Renal Disease, which took a terrible toll on his health. He died at the Veteran's Hospital in 1964. He also had emphysema and had asthma all of his life. There were very few treatments at that time for all of his complications, but now there are many options available. We pray that the doctors choose the course of treatment that will lead to better health for you. Just know that The Lord is in control of the situation. God Bless you and your family. Donna Gwin Libhart
Comments: Donna, It is so nice to hear from you after all these years. I remember you especially from Elisha M. Pease. You, Linda Nichols and Gwen King are people I have often wondered about over the years. It is funny how some classmates stand out in your mind. Thanks for posting on the SOC '63 website. This has been an unusual day since you and Danny Green classmates who don't normally post checked in. I hope more of you will let us know what you are doing these days. After all it has been forty-nine years, since some of us have heard from you.
Comments: Hello, Lynell! I was very interested in your homepage and love the photos! Your babies are really precious. We have a five year old long haired chihuahua we call Tippy. We have spoiled her rotten. She is a lap baby to the nth degree. I had also scrolled back several months and found some referrences to crochet. I am a fanatic! I worked for Annie's Attic in Big Sandy, Texas from 1984 to 1992 as a crochet testor. We took the items that were submitted for publication and wrote patterns for them, and they were photographed and published. It was really fun and I haven't outgrown the love for it! I am working on angels and snowflakes for Christmas and baby afghans. I usually keep several of these going at one time. I have favorite motifs that I can make up in a jiffy and crochet them together. Keep us posted about our Mary Irene. She was always wonderful to be around, and if you did not have a smile, she would give you one of hers! She just seemed to make our time at SOC worthwhile. Keep up the good work with your photographs. They are wonderful. Until next time. thank you, Donna Gwin Libhart |
