Comments: Charlotte, that was too funny. We lost Horshak today of a heart attack. Wonder what happened to Gabe Kaplan? Tried to watch the Cowboy game last night but couldn't. They really need an extended pre-season. Let's hope the offensive line gets a lot better. I hope the Mecca is successful in its move. That old building was falling down. Thanks for the picture, Bill, made me hungry.
Comments: I am chuckling over this one!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c89tyUPOuv4&feature=youtu.be
Comments: Well, Charlotte, I knew you were not an Anon, and that's all that really matters in my humble opinion. Thanks for clearing it up! <clap>
Comments: Well, I don't' know how that happened...um...guess I typed it in my mind...??????? What mind?
Comments: Okay dokey, Ms. C.A.. Please fix your name or someone will complain. Look, I just made a poem. Oh, how I loved the old Mecca. I dragged many a young lawyer in there, wild-eyed and wanting to scream for mama. Made converts of every one. Dragged even more into Gennie's on Bishop, back when the screen door had a piece of cotton stuffed in every hole. I was known as that court reporter who knows her way around Oak Cliff and isn't afraid to go there. Thank you, Dallas media. Last time I went to Mecca, it was revolting. Glad to hear they are moving. I was amused by Dr. Phil's crusade about weight loss. Used to see him in The Mecca every time I went there.
Comments: Some of the info in the south paw stats says that about 13% of the population around the world are left handed.......it also says they make more money than righties! The members of the Left Handers Group say they are also better looking, smarter and have better personalities than the right handers. Thanks Bill...I am so hungry now!!!!!!
Comments: Left this out of my last post. Eggs and CFS at the Mecca!
Comments: The site of what I believe was the location for the very first SOCite luncheon (at that time, in a sexist move, open to the ladies only), The Mecca Restaurant, has closed. Not forever, but just to move to a new location in East Dallas, on Live Oak. The Dart line which opened behind the old location took a serious toll on their business, the lease was up and the building was falling apart. Throw in the fact that the neighborhood was not conducive to night-time business (which will be available at the new spot) and it seems to make sense for the move. When I worked for the old Ward Drug Co., our office was just down the street and I ate lots of biscuits and gravy and chicken fried steaks there. Folks in East Dallas are lucky!
Comments: 'bout time we Lefties got our day in the sun!
Comments: Oh great! Another minority is recognized....next they will be demanding their rights....or lefts!
Comments: Today, August 13th is Left Handed Day. It turns out that 4% of the population is left handed. Several of our Presidents (Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama) have all been left handed. So congratulations South Paws, today is your day.
Comments: We never, never put a banana in Might Fine Cooper's chair. Stole his gradebook and put leaves in his coat pocket... That was Pat E. and myself. I don't know what others did to him.. (The gradebook might be a serious offense nowadays...)
Comments: Doyle Vickers and I categorically and emphatically deny all charges and allegations re P.L.Isaacs's assigning responsibility to us for the banana incident. Rather than being a "mean practical joke" as Isaacs alleges, it was merely a childhood prank with appeal (a peel), no doubt perpetrated by the student who laughed uncontrollably.
Comments: I hope all of you are watching the Olympics. The American women have been fabulous. They have done their share in contributing to our lead in medals, especially gold medals.
Comments: One-half inch on the Smith yard!!
Comments: Sharon, I wasn't sure, but it certainly looked like Barbara. Our grass is so happy after a little downpour today. I thought about checking the rain gauge but if I go out there right now, the neighbor's cat will dart in. She's lurking. She runs in and plays with our kitties' catnip toys whenever she can. Catching her can be a challenge. I hope everyone gets a nice rainshower today.
Comments: Lynell - Was that Barbara Moffett at Coach Hitt's birthday party? Sure did look like her. Watched the temp fall 10 degrees and still no rain. Darn it.
Comments: Here's a story about Coach Bill Hitt that I enjoyed. http://oakcliff.advocatemag.com/2010/10/running-for-their-lives/
Comments: Cool! I like Mr Hitt. Happy Birthday ti him.....can't make it to Dallas, but great idea!
Comments: Steve Foster, what a very cool idea!
Comments: Pardon my interruption on your fine website but I wanted to drop an invitation to any from your class who knew Coach Bill Hitt. He coached and taught at WW Bushman and Boude Story during our years. We are having a surprise birthday party for him on Aug. 20 at Boude Story Jr. High at 10 am in the morning. He will be 82 years old. If you know Coach Hitt and would like to attend, please email me and let me know by Aug. 15. Thanks.
Comments: I ran into Eads downtown one day right after high school. He looked me in the eye, then looked away, like he was afraid I was going to say hello. I know he recognized me. He bolted across the street when the light changed.
Comments: Um...wasn't Eads "asked" to "leave" SOC for his sexual conduct? I know he was "close" friends with my SOC art teacher, Smith, who adored some or our SOC "boys with blue eyes". My English teacher, Mr. Ford, helped me get over Smith and his "unusual" (in the 60s) treatment of girls.
Comments: Phyllis, what a sweet story about Mr. Wilder. He must have been at Holmes. The SOC biology teacher I had was Mr. Eads, and he would not have been amused by the banana incident. German Shepherds are such noble creatures. I don't know if I'd like a dog around that's smarter than I am though. Bill, too bad you missed out on Rin Tin Tin's offspring. You and Donna need a puppy now to liven things up around the house! (That was intended to be funny.)
Comments: I saw Dan Wilder's obituary in the Dallas Morning News the other day. He was our biology teacher; I'm so senile I can't remember if it was at Holmes or SOC. He was a gentle soul who was easily embarrassed, causing his face to turn bright red. He gestured a lot with his hands and was usually holding up his hall pass pad for emphasis. Karen Dollar and I stuck a lady's garter on it once, to the hilarity of all. Later, Doug Graham and Doyle Vickers put a banana on his chair, and Mr. Wilder sat on it, soiling his trousers. For some reason, he thought I was involved and called me in for questioning. I knew nothing about it, but started inappropriately laughing -- a life-long problem -- and could not stop. It was a mean practical joke; he probably had to take his pants to the cleaners. I tried to reassure him I wasn't involved, but -- in light of my uncontrollable laughter -- was probably not very convincing. RIP Dan.
Comments: There was a drawing for the puppy as one of the prizes for the grand opening of the old A. Harris (later Sanger/Harris) Shopping Center at Keist and Zang Blvd.
Comments: Bill, What did you have to do to win a Rin Tin Tin puppy? Our neighbor had a German Shepherd that was a puppy of Bullet (Roy Roger's dog) and I was scarred to death of that dog.
Comments: She did indeed win one of those puppies when we were students at Clinton P. Russell. I was sure it would be me, and I never forgave her for ruining my life.
Comments: I remember hearing at some point that Liz Gerbetz won one of Rin Tin Tin's puppies in a contest. I wonder if that's true, if I'm remembering it right. She was so smart and sweet and friendly. I would sure like to hear from her again.
Comments: I knew Mrs Gerbetz at Cliff Temple Baptist Church. She was our church librarian. She was always so friendly and helpful to us little rug rats who came to the Library. I have not seen our Liz in years. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family! |
