David and I had Jake's Appreciation Day.  Split a double cheeseburger with Jake's bottle caps (deep fried jalapeno slices.) Um-mmm, good.

It's Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, and I know the '63 class likes chicken.

Mary told me when I visited her in May that her surgeon told her that her treatments from then on were only buying her time....not curing her.  I pray for Mary's strength and emotional comfort as she and her medical team continue to fight for more time...may it be many years!

Mary Kay Parr Crowder
Update on Mary McCord Bach . . . Mary has a body scan tomorrow to see if chemo has helped to shrink her body tumors. She found out today that she is going to have "whole" brain radiation and will be marked for that when she sees her radiologist on Thursday. She doesn't know yet when her first brain radiation will be scheduled, but probably soon since she's getting marked on Thursday. She will also get results of her body scan on Thursday. SOCites and friends, please keep your prayers going for Mary. She's concerned and overwhelmed right now and needs our love, support and prayers. She is also experiencing a build of fluid on her lungs again.

Mary Kay and I are going to visit her this Friday - Sunday.

I liked Kenneth Branagh. He's a good actor.. The main man in the top hat, in charge of the Industrial Revolution..

Ginger, I liked the British opening ceremony.  It showed  different aspects of the Isles, especially the wonderful stages of British music and literature, and how the people came into the modern age.

I thought it came out later that some of the China ceremony was computer enhanced.  Somebody's grandchild (Ken Haas or Jud Calwell?) calls it "trickography."

No comparison to China. China probably worked those people to death,  to create that extravaganza...!
London's version is 'so British' don't you think..?

I thought the queen probably couldn't hear what was going on in the opening ceremony, so she appeared disinterested some of the time. We watched the women's bike race this morning - scary in the rain!  What stamina those athletes have.

Lynell,  I thought it was cool to make Queen Elizabeth a James Bond girl.  It shows she has a sense of humor.  Although the opening ceremony was outstanding, they didn't come close to the fabulous opening ceremony of the Chinese.  Thanks Charlotte for your generosity.

Patricia Vessels  wrote on Face Book that Jerry is improving.  Thought those of you who don't do FB would want to know this.

Phyllis, My heart is with you.  I have a son who is married and has a family and he is spending a substantial amount of his income every month paying back bank loans.  The sad part is that he wasn't able to  find the kind of position for which he is qualified.  Unfortunately, he is not alone.  I also have a professor friend who cashed in his retirement to try to save his wife who died from cancer.  He is almost ninety years old and lives in poverty.

Grants are moneys granted.....no one has to pay them back.  I suppose that killer did become a specialist

Ah, yes, back in the good old days of educational funding.  If only it were that easy these days.

Many years ago when I was in court reporting school, I was amazed by all the people who were attending on grants.  Never mind if they couldn't spell or type.  They were assured by the faculty that they'd have "people" who'd do that for them.  At the time, it was required for all Certified Shorthand Reporters to be notaries.  One guy was a convicted felon.  He was never going to be a notary.

Most of the grant people dropped out.  I wonder how many paid back the grant money.

Drop the "s" in graduates.  Sometimes I miss things when proofing.

Charlotte,  The first fellowships of this kind were begun during the Eisenhower Administration.  The purpose was to train specialists in areas where there was a critical need.  Thousands of graduates students have received these fellowships.

The killer's $ was probably awarded him as  a "grant" for some obscure subject that is so easy to obtain in the safe world of academia. I know that I will be critisized for this comment.  But, out in the REAL world he would have NEVER been given that $.

Lynell, Did the $29,000 come from a scholarship given to individuals to study in a critical need area?

Sadly Lynell, we all had to pay for it, and he was not even an illegal immigrant either that reaps the havoc of the politicians, one of our own, amazing.

I heard on the news that the wacko received a $29,000 annual allowance from the U. S. Gov't., in addition to getting his schooling paid for, all compliments of taxpayers.  Nice, huh?

My 2 cents on the matter of the shootings, for what it is worth, sadly no where in America or elsewhere are we safe any longer, which saddens me as we grew up on an era of being able to play outside until dark, etc. The sad thing about these shooters, since the Columbine incident in Colorado, the attempts at shooting officials of our country and hitting some like Gabby, sickens me, they target the place where they can hit the most people, maybe not the movie in general was just the target, his apartment was boobytrapped to bring the building down.  These individuals may target the Olympics, baseball games, football games, amusement parks, anywhere there is a crowd, they could hit Walmart, parking lots, etc.  They don't care.  We now have to protect ourselves, be ever watchful for our own safety, our childrens safety and others.  We do not know their triggers, this young man was a neuroscience major, he could have snapped, they say there is a small line between insanity and genius, sadly his way went the wrong way and not a positive one.   As a Christian I have to forgive him, but I do not have to forgive the act that killed and injured so many.

If he was a problem in school, K-12, they seal the records.. if he earns a record as an adult, then they will 'unseal' the records. He only had a speeding ticket, they said.. Yes, we do protect the 'wrong people'. I know that from personal experience with the 'ex'.
As in the case of Gabby Giffords, if there had been early intervention, it might have saved people from that shooting in Arizona. The same in Colorado.. We, as a nation, have not learned this lesson yet.
His mother may have known for years, and not been able to do anything. Mothers and Wives have less power than you think, unless they are also 'rich and powerful'.. I wonder if they've discovered where James got the $14,000 for all that equipment..?? He was very smart and very dangerous... We have no idea how many are 'out there'..like that.??

Agreed Jack!  At least someone MIGHT..and that is MIGHT have watched him closely.

Now I read that Warner Bros is making a substantial donation to the victims....I guess they are covering their behind in case the blame game starts up.  They have also canceled premiers in other countries.  Warner Bro had a Mob movie coming out in Sept that had an ending with automatic weapons being shot off inside a movie theater...so they have ordered an expensive re- shoot of that ending.  Violence and evil reenacted in wide screen is the norm....sigh!
