Comments: Many years ago when I was in court reporting school, I was amazed by all the people who were attending on grants. Never mind if they couldn't spell or type. They were assured by the faculty that they'd have "people" who'd do that for them. At the time, it was required for all Certified Shorthand Reporters to be notaries. One guy was a convicted felon. He was never going to be a notary. Most of the grant people dropped out. I wonder how many paid back the grant money.
Comments: Drop the "s" in graduates. Sometimes I miss things when proofing.
Comments: Charlotte, The first fellowships of this kind were begun during the Eisenhower Administration. The purpose was to train specialists in areas where there was a critical need. Thousands of graduates students have received these fellowships.
Comments: The killer's $ was probably awarded him as a "grant" for some obscure subject that is so easy to obtain in the safe world of academia. I know that I will be critisized for this comment. But, out in the REAL world he would have NEVER been given that $.
Comments: Lynell, Did the $29,000 come from a scholarship given to individuals to study in a critical need area?
Comments: Sadly Lynell, we all had to pay for it, and he was not even an illegal immigrant either that reaps the havoc of the politicians, one of our own, amazing.
Comments: I heard on the news that the wacko received a $29,000 annual allowance from the U. S. Gov't., in addition to getting his schooling paid for, all compliments of taxpayers. Nice, huh?
Comments: My 2 cents on the matter of the shootings, for what it is worth, sadly no where in America or elsewhere are we safe any longer, which saddens me as we grew up on an era of being able to play outside until dark, etc. The sad thing about these shooters, since the Columbine incident in Colorado, the attempts at shooting officials of our country and hitting some like Gabby, sickens me, they target the place where they can hit the most people, maybe not the movie in general was just the target, his apartment was boobytrapped to bring the building down. These individuals may target the Olympics, baseball games, football games, amusement parks, anywhere there is a crowd, they could hit Walmart, parking lots, etc. They don't care. We now have to protect ourselves, be ever watchful for our own safety, our childrens safety and others. We do not know their triggers, this young man was a neuroscience major, he could have snapped, they say there is a small line between insanity and genius, sadly his way went the wrong way and not a positive one. As a Christian I have to forgive him, but I do not have to forgive the act that killed and injured so many.
Comments: If he was a problem in school, K-12, they seal the records.. if he earns a record as an adult, then they will 'unseal' the records. He only had a speeding ticket, they said.. Yes, we do protect the 'wrong people'. I know that from personal experience with the 'ex'. As in the case of Gabby Giffords, if there had been early intervention, it might have saved people from that shooting in Arizona. The same in Colorado.. We, as a nation, have not learned this lesson yet. His mother may have known for years, and not been able to do anything. Mothers and Wives have less power than you think, unless they are also 'rich and powerful'.. I wonder if they've discovered where James got the $14,000 for all that equipment..?? He was very smart and very dangerous... We have no idea how many are 'out there'..like that.??
Comments: Agreed Jack! At least someone MIGHT..and that is MIGHT have watched him closely. Now I read that Warner Bros is making a substantial donation to the victims....I guess they are covering their behind in case the blame game starts up. They have also canceled premiers in other countries. Warner Bro had a Mob movie coming out in Sept that had an ending with automatic weapons being shot off inside a movie theater...so they have ordered an expensive re- shoot of that ending. Violence and evil reenacted in wide screen is the norm....sigh!
Comments: "Reporting" him would not have done any good. Until he acted, he had not done anything illegal. With our current laws, it is almost impossible to have someone committed. I have a close friend who has been through it with a wife and later a son. Both, at one time or another, were a danger to him, themselves and others. Commitments are voluntary and they can leave anytime they wish. If if a judge commits them it is only for a short time and then they can leave with no followup. Like so many things in this PC world, we are more worried about "protecting" the wrong people than taking care of the community as a whole.
Comments: Wait, wait....the mother SAID that she was NOT surprised...now what could have given her that idea? Um...YES, she should have reported him to the authorities......someone..FBI if that is it. I have NO empathy for the mother in this case if she had even an teeny hint that her son might be dangerous.
Comments: I personally think that if the mother knew her son was stockpiling weapons and planning something heinous, a call to the F. B. I. would have been in order. Might have saved a life or two. Of course, she may not have known. Because her freaky son is of age, I'm sure there was nothing she could do if he didn't want to be helped. By the way, Kathleen, Nancy at the Oasis says hello.
Comments: Charlotte, Sometimes it is hard for parents to know what to do. If the mother suspected her son would get violent, she should have done everything possible to get him help.
Comments: I read where the mother of the accused shooter isn't surprised at what her son has done....hmmmmm....shouldn't she have notified someone? Anyone? Sad! She should face charges too.
Comments: Amen to that, Kathleen...
Comments: Perhaps there should be more efforts in identifying disturbed individuals. Even when parents realize there is a problem they have trouble finding the right kind of help for their children.
Comments: Evil has been around a long time. Adam and Eve had a bad kid. It's up to us to keep ourselves out of harm's way, as I see it.
Comments: I know...maybe you are thinking....stuff can happen anywhere as long as there is evil.
Comments: Well, Hollywood can count my dollar out from now on. I am going to stick with Netflix or On Demand or airplanes to see movies from now on.
Comments: Charlotte, some security should be in order. Went to my twice-a-year matinee this week with a friend. The only security in the multiplex was provided by the 16-year-old girl at the concession stand. Two guys sat in the empty theater right behind us. One toted a gallon jug of clear liquid. Water? Muriatic acid? My friend had to toss out her paper container of Diet Coke at the door. They made disgusting comments, so my friend and I got up and moved. After what happened that same night, I think we would have left. The movie was Magic Mike -- actually fairly good, other than the F-word every two seconds. No wonder the place was empty.
Comments: Are movie theaters going to have to have security like airports or the ball games now?

Comments: I want to see the 12-year pictures, with 30-year-old Mr. Caldwell and his Class of '75 date!
Comments: Jud, do you have any pictures of your dates from SOC 10 years after we graduated? hmmmmm?
Comments:
Comments: Does anyone know if there will be a July luncheon? I will be in the Dallas area next week and would love to see everyone. Thank you.
Comments: John, I just loved them so much, and was in such demand, that I kept going back for 10-12 years. I am still the Watusi King!
Comments: Jud, when you say that you attended TWO Senior Proms, does that imply you were "held back" a year while I moved on to my nifty "Mailroom Clerk" job at Southwestern Life Ins. Co.? |
