Sharon, I remember the prom very well. And I've still got our prom picture.  And I also have the picture from the following year with Norma Krueger.

Jud, our club is Raveneaux Country Club on Cypresswood Drive.  Got some more pictures today and there's no telling when the golf course will be able to open.  Really sad.  Do you all remember after the tornado in '57 when it rained for days on end and everything flooded and the Trinity River was almost to the top of the levees.  I believe it was the Rivercrest CC in Oak Cliff that was completely underwater.  Yet, six years later we had our senior prom there.

Will you So. TXSOCites kindly stop bragging about your rain?  We've had two downpours lately, each lasting two minutes.  I am grateful for each and every drop.

The company I work for owns a country club in Spring, TX, adjacent to Houston.  Our manager sent us pictures of the golf course which is under water and really looks like a river.  Some serious insurance claims will be filed.  Sunday, after listening to the thunder for an hour, we finally had probably 20 raindrops.

You wouldn't need a waterproof detector up here.  Rain threatened our house all weekend, but did we get any?  No.  My yard is its mid-summer brown and it will stay that way unless we get rain.

Port O'Connor, on the other hand is saturated.  I think all the rain in the Houston area went to POC first.

Charlotte, yes, that ring search is on "hold" for a bit. Seems the chest-high water is now 2 ft. deeper.

The same two volunteers headed up to Lake Conroe yesterday to search for a wedding band that a woman lost as she got out of a boat near her lakeside home. She'd worn it every day for 30 years til it slipped off last Sunday. She thought it was near the bulkhead in about two or three feet of water.

Jerry and Mark got in the water with waterproof detectors and in less than 5 minutes got a promising signal. Used a long-handled scoop and rescued it! They were offered a reward, but decided her "joy" was reward enough. It was a simple 14K gold band.

After reading Betty Gibbs sincere comments on the SOC prayer line regarding Mary, I realized that we have some wonderful classmates.  With all of us praying for Mary she will be blessed.

SOCites, I'm so sad to report this. Mary said ok to post. She has more brain tumors and a collapsed lung. She has 2 more chemo treatments, then another gamma knife procedure, then body scan to find out if the chemo helped those tumors. She found out today before her chemo treatment. I just got off the phone with her and Kari. Her doctor also told her that she could not go back to teaching this Fall. Pray without ceasing for our dear Mary Irene McCord Bach.

I'm leaving for Canada early in the morning and Peaches will post any updates.

More metal detecting adventures:

My local detecting club (MCARC) got a call this week from a distraught young woman who was seeking assistance in recovering a "lost" engagement ring. The Woodlands Mall has a mile-long canal that is modeled along the lines of San Antonio's Riverwalk. We call ours "The Waterway" (pic below). The ring is currently residing at the bottom of the canal.

The engagement ended badly and in a moment of anger she tossed the ring into the water. She doesn't want the guy back but definitely wants to retrieve the valuable ring (to sell it?).

To my surprise, two of the club members have volunteered to make the attempt once the rain here lets up. The effort requires (1) getting permission to enter the water, (2) determining the depth of the canal, (3) acquiring waterproof detectors, and (4) a good bit of luck in getting near such a small item. We'll see how it works out.

Wha, wha, wha?  You mean you were not the hot guy being stomped on by the bull?

I need to get my eyes checked. (They've been blue-green till now, but checked would be interesting.  I am thinking red and white.)

I know most of you expected me to be in Pamplona, Spain, this week for the annual Running of the Bulls. Sadly, I had to forego the San Fermin festival due to an aching left heel (and the lack of a Passport). However, we can ALL enjoy the festival via this link:

Well, maybe next year Spain will be in the cards. For now it is time to focus on the upcoming Burning Man Festival!

Memo To S. Reeves:  Thanks for the tip about the guys in the U.K. who discovered 50,000 Iron Age coins with their metal detectors. Too bad the USA doesn't have that same rich history.

My metal detecting club was discussing this recent story about "buried treasure" in Florida. I think the lesson to the story is to have a small backyard if you're going to imitate this lady:

http://news.opb.org/article/ashland_buried_treasure_stolen/

On a similar note, just today our club was contacted by a woman who lives in The Heights area of Houston. She claims she has lost a bag she hid in her home. The bag contained jewelry and watches. Her best guess is that maybe it is in the insulation in the attic, but could be hidden in one of the walls. She thinks someone with a metal detector might locate it. So far none of the members have volunteered.

Lynell,  Thanks for posting the obit for Mrs. Vessels. By coincidence the obit for Glenn Linden, an S.M.U. professor, and a close friend of ours was also published.   My condolences to Jerry and Pat and their family.
