My plan is to just keep a cool head and wait to see who Barry and Newt endorse before making any political commitments on my own.
Comments: This is still the United States of America -- thank God! -- and we still enjoy the freedoms to think and speak as we like. This website also allows us to be pretty far-ranging in our posts, and I like that, too. However, I cringe when we get overly-political. Our parents always cautioned us to be careful when discussing religion and politics, because those topics can create hard feelings. That's even more true today, in our current period of increasingly "uncivil" political discourse. It's easy to take harsh, extreme, positions, but many of them don't survive the cold light of day, and the reality is usually somewhere in the middle. For example, check out the links in Barry's post about Lewis. I did, and he didn't come across as some type of "socialist left"[ist]. And God knows the ACLU is an equal-opportunity offender -- neither right nor left -- that defends the free speech rights of even the reactionary right-wing American Nazi Party. Obviously, in naming his company Progressive, Lewis is in no way attempting to misrepresent or conceal his political orientation. There are alot of crazy things circulating via the Internet, but most of them need to be taken with "a grain of salt."

My metal detecting and treasure hunting ventures have expanded. For the past 10 days I've been searching for a lost Time Capsule!
At this point it is an "online" hunt. The capsule was buried back in 1976, most likely as part of the nation's bicentennial celebrations. I heard about it from an old-timer who was present at the ceremony in which it was encapsulated (is that the term?).
I believe my source to be credible and he tells me that the time capsule is on the grounds of a school in Cedar Hill, TX. Thirty-six years ago each home room was encouraged to place an item of interest in the capsule container - to be opened by future time travelers.
The current Principal has been with the school for 11 years and has no knowledge of the capsule's existence (I made an email inquiry). Soon I heard from the CHISD administration requesting that I make no attempts to unearth it until further research can be conducted on the matter to determine EXACTLY where it might be and what the intended date of opening is.
It is my belief that this is the oldest Time Capsule in Cedar Hill, far pre-dating the ones at Northwood University and at the new City Government building.
I have a good idea where it is buried, but there are complications in accessing it. Hoping to test my "theories" on my next trip to Dallas. Stay tuned!
Comments: Progressive Democrats...(They're Liberals, but that is not in the title..) Really, don't let Barry get into those 'long dissertations' on liberals vs. conservatives. They are boring for one thing.. Say 'God Bless Conservatives', and leave it at that. The rest of it is just downright boring..Really folks..
Comments: God Bless all Progressive Liberals.. They're for the people.. Amen... ![]() ![]() (Tell Barry to quit saying all that stuff..)
Comments: Warriors Weekend 2012 is coming to Port O'Connor, TX on May 19. If you want a huge dose of patriotism plan your trip now. If you want to help, contact one of the Warriors Weekend board members. They still need boats to take the wounded soldiers fishing and, if you don't have a boat, they have volunteer jobs available for everyone. See the web page below for details: http://web.mac.com/warriorsweekend/Warriors_Weekend/Home.html They expect over 500 wounded soldiers this year from hospitals all over the country. For such a small community, Port O'Connor and the surrounding cities come together once a year to make this huge event happen. Things start early Saturday morning at Froggies in Port O'Connor, but don't expect to find a room for overnight on Friday in POC. Possibly Port Lavaca or Victoria will have rooms. Loading all the special needs troops on 250 boats is mass confusion, but it somehow gets done every year. Come on down and make yourself feel really good. If you can't make the trip, making a donation will also make you feel good.
Comments: Purchased a new cell phone. Actually, HAD to purchase a new one. You know that your phone is old when your servicer sends you a letter stating that after a certain date your phone will no longer be in their system. Unfortunately, this is the second time it has happened to me. I now have a Samsung Galaxy 4G (at a fantastic upgrade price) and so far, I know how to make phone calls. I tried reading the manual and gave up. And, I'm really good at following instructions! So, I've decided to get my 9-year-old great-nephew to assist me. Talk about feeling totally antiquated. Ugh.
Comments: Kathleen: I think it is very important to be "political". As so called senior citizens, we are going to be thrown under the bus by what is happening to our nation. I am sorry to hear about your mother-in-law and I am sure that there are a lot of other similar stories that could be told. National policies are destroying what we have worked all our lives to accomplish. Medicare premiums are to triple by 2014, while Medicare benefits are going to be cut. Supplementary insurance premiums are on the rise and many companies are no longer offering coverage. These are just a few of the things that will be changed by that massive piece of legislation called Obamacare. There are probably many other things in Obamacare that will adversely affect our lives and we don't even know about them. Our children and grandchildren will be strapped with trillions of dollars in debt and for what? All this didn't start with our current administration. Many cite FDR and the New Deal as the beginning of our current welfare state and our whole system of government has become so corrupt. Just look at the things that have been in the news the last few weeks: the Secret Service hiring hookers, the EPA's heavy handed tactics to force compliance with unjust regulations, wasteful spending by numerous agencies. It just goes on and on. Who is responsible for all this? It is we the voters and the worthless, self serving politicians that we elect and fail to hold accountable for their actions. Yet we keep re-electing them year after year. It's time to wake up and if my being "political" ruffles a few feathers, so be it. And, my prayers are with all our classmates and families that are suffering.
Comments: I am so glad that Mary McCord Bach is doing a lot better. She has always been our class star and she is greatly admired by her classmates. I realize Lynell it is hard to keep Barry Gibbs from being political and I don't mind it as long as someone writes a counter argument. I do have an insurance company that I have wanted to warn everyone about. It is a long term care policy called Transamerica. My mother-in-law has paid several hundred dollars every month since the mid-70's. Last year she went into a home and they agreed in writing to pay $3000 a month after six months, the waiting period. When the 180 days were over, they refused to pay stating that my mother in law was not eligible for benefits because she was in an assisted living wing not a nursing wing and that we had never received a letter approving her for benefits. I guess we will be in court. In the meantime, my mother-in-law is 91 and she isn't getting any younger. It is imperative that people with these insurance policies carefully to read the fine print to make sure they are covered for the care they are receiving.
Comments: Today I heard from a little birdie that our Mary looks and sounds great. I also heard that her home is darlin' (not a big surprise) and that at least one grandchild has her musical talent. Wonderful genetics at work! May God bless all SOCite friends who are suffering from ailments.
Comments: I hope everyone planning to attend the luncheon this Saturday has a safe trip and a wonderful time. Take plenty of pictures. Wish I could be there.
Comments: Didn't plan to buy their insurance -- now I really won't!!!
Progressive Insurance...who are they??
Comments: I cancelled my boat insurance with them when I read this last year. The girl joked that they had been getting a lot of cancellations. I paid a little more for the replacement insurance, but at least I know that my money is going to worthy causes and not groups like the ACLU. I changed to Boat US.
Progressive Insurance...who are they??
Comments: Pardon one more interruption, however I just heard one of your wonderful classmates Jerry Vessells is quite ill in the hospital. It was mentioned at the SOC Mens Lunch yesterday and we had prayer for Jerry. He and his wife Pat were such a help to our class with incredible videos down through the years and our class learned to really appreciate all they did. Hope all goes well for Jerry. I always admired his sweet spirit.
Comments: For those of you who don't do FB..there is info that Mary Mc Cord Bach has received the sad news that her recent chemo wasn't working and her tumors have grown. She will start a new regimen soon. If you want more information I guess you could email Peaches. She talks with Mary often.
Comments: Lynell: Thanks for clearing that up. All these years, I thought it was really nice of your brother to take you out so you wouldn't have to sit through re-runs of Gunsmoke on Saturday night.
Comments: I hate to read that "those of us who remain" and know the reality of it!
Comments: Steve, many thanks for this info about Bob. I'm so sorry to learn of his medical issues, and I hope he can overcome most of them. We're all maturing, some of us at different rates, and by now just about all of us who remain have something going on. From my experience, doctors know diddly-squat about their prognoses. I feel sure that Bob will be back to 99% of his former self in a short time. Thanks for this post, and please do come back often.
Comments: I hate to hear about Bob. He certainly could play the piano! A large group of SOCites went to see him play with a band at a small Mexican restaurant on Gaston Ave., close to White Rock Lake. Gosh, that was quite a few years ago. I remember that Peaches rode over with me and Donna, but I'm not sure what year it was.
Comments: Pardon my intervention on this fine website of my 63 friends but I wanted to drop a line that I had lunch today with your distinguished classmate Bob Chaney. We had a great time revisiting the 50's and 60's. Bob, like most of us, is retired and living the good life but he did make me sad when he told me a stroke had left him unable to play the piano. For any of you who ever heard Bob at the piano, you know how I felt. Good visit with a good guy. And now I hibernate back to my 64 site.
Comments: I had a coupla dates with Ronnie Garrett. People thought he was my brother. I remember watching Gunsmoke with my family a lot. Wasn't that on Saturday night?
Comments: Barry, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your dating experiences at SOC. Makes me feel somewhat better about mine or lack of same.
Comments: JS: I agree that she was a lovely girl and I can only assume, that if we actually went on a date, that she was another one that I could only get to go on one date and that was a blind date! Sorry to say, I did not leave a string of broken hearts behind me as you did. Dating was tough for the kid from Fruitdale. I asked Connie Fleming to be our company's representative at the Military Ball and that resulted in Connie winning, but it also resulted in a fight with Brooks Barr after lunch one day. I had guys asking me to fix them up with a date with Betty, thinking she was my sister, but I couldn't get a date with her myself. When I did have a date, my severe allergies would flair up the morning of the highly anticipated date and by date time my nose was as red as Rudolph's, my eyes were red and swollen and a handkerchief was always at the ready. To those poor girls, I apologize and it really was just allergies.
Comments:
Capt. Gibbs, I don't see why you're on the defensive about this incident? She was a fine lookin' girl. The pic almost looks like a portrait from a royal wedding.
Was this another of those times when the poor gal would only go out with you once?
Comments: My apologies to Nancy Miller for any negative reactions that the photo from JS might have caused. I assure you that she is as innocent in this character assassination as I am. She looks like a lovely and sweet girl and I am sure that she would disavow and connection with me or JS.
Comments: I had my first annual physical last week after getting on Social Security. I say "annual" but I seem to have missed the 65 and 66 years. I'm sure a number of you have had this same experience-the nurse walks in and says "Now don't take this personal. We have to do this on all our Social Security patients. Remember, don't take this personally". She then handed me a sheet of paper with two instructions on it 1. Write a sentence and 2. Copy the drawing on the left into the empty box on the right. She then handed me a kleenex and said "Take this napkin with your right hand, fold it in half and lay it on the floor". There were several more pages of questions that I think I got right. She said that they have a number of older patients that cannot answer any of the questions. Really scary when you think about it. My sentence "Are we having fun yet?
Comments: John, John, John: I continue to deny any involvement with anyone from Kimball. I didn't even associate with my cousin, Don Darnell, who went to Kimball. It is time that you cease the character assassination. My total allegiance was to SOC.
Comments: Fifty years means nothing. Get yourselves to Crockett next Saturday to see the best looking group of 60 something year olds you ever knew.
Comments: Fifty years ago I was not even born yet. I do not know what any of you people are talking about. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
Comments: John, that is what I posted about 4/23...HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?????? My GRAND neice is in college...sigh!! |
