When I took depositions in tall buildings, to amuse myself I'd find a fixed place on the horizon, like a far-off TV tower.  I'd line it up with a window frame and watch as the building swayed left and right, because wind blows through those towers.  If buildings like the Green Weenie or whatever they call it today didn't sway, they'd snap -- a scarier option.

Never had fun in a tall building in Dallas, so that is on my bucket list.  Figure out how to have fun at 60+ floors.  Illegal, immoral and fattening are all, unfortunately, ruled out.

I think most of Oak Cliff survived the storm OK.  The area worst hit was out closer to Carter High, I believe.  Looking at the map in this morning's Dallas Morning News, it looks like there were 2 lines of damage, moving from SW to NE, and we were "between the lines."  Coworkers in Coppell report alot of damage from baseball-sized hail that broke out car windows and skylights and left "craters" in their lawns.

When I had a real job my office was on the 46th floor of Republic Bank Tower and it did not have to get too windy to feel the building sway.  On a windy day, you could press your face next to the window and see the building move.  When it leaned one way, you could see the wall of the building curving all the way down.  Then the wall would disappear as it leaned the other way.  The elevators would scrape in the tracks when going up and down and if it got too windy they shut off the elevators.

While going to college, I worked for Texas Power and Light a couple of summers and was in an elevator one day when it fell.  Took several floors for the safety brake to stop it and when it stopped it was between floors.  The fire department had to get us out.  Glad that didn't happen 46 floors up.

I remember walking home from Harrell Budd the afternoon of April 2, 1957 with, I believe, Judy Wells and her smaller sibs, and saying to her that it was a perfect day for a tornado!  It was about 45 minutes later and I was standing in the front yard watching one tear up Oak Cliff.  I also remember the storm that occurred a couple of weeks later while we were in school.  The wind was so strong that the top of the Republic Bank Bldg. (tallest bldg. downtown at the time) swayed 7 to 10 feet.  Bill, so glad that your family is okay.  Hope the power gets repaired soon.

We met with our accountant today at a restaurant in the northern Arlington.  Had a nice lunch, then headed home to NE Dallas.  We got a call from him on the way home, saying turn on the radio.  His office was very near the Arlington tornado, turns out.  I was glad we didn't meet him there!  His house and office were fine, but damage was all around.

We had calls this afternoon from friends who watched the national news and are sure the Metroplex was flattened.  We had a lot of hard rain, but no wind or hail here in Lake Highlands.

I hope all our SOC people are okay after today's wild storms.

Oh my!  Isn't this the week of the Dallas tornado we witnessed in the 50s????  I hope all of you are safe!  I saw videos of the storm today and am so sorry for the loss up north east way!

It was sure an exciting day in Arlington. We got by with just high winds, hard rain and some hail (up yo marble size). No damage.

My son lives right in the middle of all the damage that occurred in South Arlington, but escaped with just some tree damage and the loss of his backyard fence, plus no power.

Their church, about two blocks away was hit hard and lost about 25% of the roof on the family life center plus trees and power lines down. My 3-year-old granddaughter was there at pre-school. When it was over and I was able to get to her she was scared to death. They will probably all spend the night with us for at least tonight.

All the damage you are seeing on TV was within a two block radius of their home.

Praise God that it looks like nobody was even injured.

Hope everyone has survived the violent storms around Dallas.  We could hear the tornado that was near the airport but only got a little hail at work.

My TV will not tune to MSNBC.  I have tried several times, but it just won't do it.  Occasionally it will tune to CNN or NPR, but very rarely.  I think the last time was in 1998 and that was by accident.

Barry, I don't deny that the Democrats receive money from corporations and various groups The conservative dominated Supreme Court was trying to stack the deck in their favor. No one really believes that a corporation is a person and should be allowed to give unlimited amounts of money.
As for Obama criticizing the Supreme Court, I think he is being naive. I am sure their ruling on health care went against him and the American people. Just another political decision by the Supreme Court in favor of the Republicans.
Barry, I am glad that you keep informed. Since you have suggested in the past that I listen to various right wing commentators, I would like to suggest that you listen the the Ed Show and Rachel Maddow Show and the varIous other shows on MSNBC.

                 We Will Remember in November...!

I'm glad that Obama put the Supreme Court in its place yesterday.  Imagine the nerve of those "unelected" judges in criticizing Obama's health care plan.  How dare them accuse the law as being unconstitutional when Obama knows it is a good law. What are the Justices thinking when they question anything that Obama has done.  After all, according to Obama, the law had almost unanomous support in Congress and has been extolled by professors, trial lawyers and union bosses all over the country. And all this time, I thought Congress had only passed the law by a few votes with no Republicans voting for the law.

So you are saying that the Democrats do not get contributions from corporations and wealthy individuals?  That does not seem fair, does it?  I wonder who George Soros was actually giving all that money to?  And, who was that talk show guy who just gave a million dollars to an Obama PAC. Perhaps I misread that and it was actually the PAC-10. I try so hard to stay informed and I am glad that there are those out there to show me the error of my ways.

Thanks.

The women in the Georgia legislature were carrying signs today and protesting "we will remember in November." It looks like the Supreme Court allowing corporations and other wealthy groups to provide unlimited campaign funds to Republican candidates may have backfired against them: they are using the money to fight among themselves.

Sharon, at last here's the review of the Bissell 9200-P carpet cleaning machine:  It does a good job!  It's very hard for me to wrangle with my wrists, but David reports it's "not too bad" to push around.  We bought some Bissell spot remover that works well, and we did not put any cleaning product into the machine -- just hot water.  It doesn't leave the carpet wet, just sort of damp.  I'm happy with the result.  Now to figure out all the rebate stuff.

Septiembre de diez y seis es mas importante que Cinco do Mayo.. Cinco de Mayo is para Margaritas..Ole..!

Don't grade my Spanish. I hope Mr. Arguelles is not reading this..

America probably 'upped' the importance of Cinco de Mayo.. Nobody in this country tries to push Margaritas on September 16..

Bill, I was thinking about May 5 the other day and wondering why in the world we celebrate Mexico's victory over the French back in the mid 1800s?  This is just another example of dumbing down.

May 5, aka Cinquo de Mayo.

I didn't say it was one of our national holidays, although it seems to be heading that way.

Bob Lilly's father was a patient at the doctor's office where I worked.  This was before HIPPA so I can blab.  He left his fedora in one of the examining rooms.  His assistant called back later to see if it was there.  I said yes.  Assistant said he was coming back into the office to get it.  I asked what kind of car he had, and said when I saw them out front I would deliver it so he would not come into the office.  Read between the lines if you like.  Some folks are just not nice to the little people.

If you have a patriotic bone in your body, set aside May 19 for a visit to Warriors Weekend in Port O'Connor, TX.

http://web.mac.com/warriorsweekend/Warriors_Weekend/Home.html

I have participated the last 4 years with a friend of mine by providing a boat and taking Warriors fishing.  You will not believe the sacrifices that these young men and women have made to protect our way of life and yet their biggest regret is that they cannot go back and be with their fellow soldiers. Out of the hundreds of soldiers we have met, only one wanted to talk about all the problems he has.  If I were in their place, I only pray that I would be as positive about life as they are.

I guarantee that it will be an experience that you will never forget.

Sorry, not a Cowboy fan and never made the connection with Bob Lilly, although he played for the Cowboys before the "devil" purchased them (Joan's description, not mine) and I was a fan back then.

We went to the Texas coast 2 weeks ago and the bluebonnets were in full bloom south of Waco.  The mesquite trees were also in bloom and I have been told that is somewhat rare.  They don't bloom every year and I don't remember seeing them on that drive before.

Now, could someone give me a recommendation on a good carpet shampooer?

It has been suggested to me that I host a SOC luncheon in Crockett, since it is between Dallas and Houston.  Before I start setting this up with a restaurant, just wondering if any of you would be willing to drive that far.  Planning on Saturday, May 5, if I do this.

Barry must be a BIG Cowboy fan to name one of his pets "Bob Lilly".

I was sad to see the news about fellow SOCite Dennis Rodman being over $800,000 behind on child support payments. Guess that means I'll now have to go to Akins for that loan I need (just til payday ... after I get a job).

In closing, I think Kathleen was referring to "pine needles". We get a lot of those dropping in the yard down here.
