Comments: My family did the Easter morning sunrise service at Laurel Land too. I, too, remember being sleepy...but a vaguely remember the music and beauty too. Pleasant memories!
Comments: I am not a member at St. Barnabas, but my son, his wife and my granddaughter are. Donna and I have visited there on many occasions. My granddaughter (she'll be 3 next month) was in the building attending pre-school when the tornado hit there. The staff did a fantastic job of protecting the children and not a single child (ages 1-4) was even scratched. Several news reports stated that about 70 kids were there. The actual number was 103.
Comments: Bill. are you a member of St. Barnabas Methodist Church and did you go to their Sunrise Service this morning? The members had an outdoor service because of storm damage to their church. Over 400 members attended the service. I remember how my mother used to bundle my brother and I and take us to the Sunrise Service at Laurel Land. I remember how cold and sleepy I was that early in the morning. We did that for years until we grew up. Happy Easter Everyone!
Comments: Happy Easter SOCites! Have a Blessed day.
Comments: John, looking forward to seeing you and Dru. I will check to see about getting into the old cemetery, just in case it is on the inside.
Comments: John, I see where Houston Mayor Annise Parker is giving a welcome home party for the military personnel who are returning home. I think that is an awesome gesture.
Comments:
Martha, save some fajitas for Dru and I. Looking forward to a return trip to scenic Crockett. Plus, there's still that geocache to go after west of town!
Comments: Looking for to seeing you and Donna.
Comments: Thanks for hosting, Martha. Donna and I will be there. Nice road trip for us. We may even come on Friday and spend the night.
Comments: Thanks for posting the invitation to May's luncheon. Being midway between Dallas and Houston may give us a chance to see friends that can't always make the Dallas luncheons.
Comments: Me again. Check the Events page for the next SOC luncheon. Martha Bass Hunt is planning a shindig May 5 at her country club in Crockett, TX. It's a fun town, club and hostess, so check it out!!
Comments: When I took depositions in tall buildings, to amuse myself I'd find a fixed place on the horizon, like a far-off TV tower. I'd line it up with a window frame and watch as the building swayed left and right, because wind blows through those towers. If buildings like the Green Weenie or whatever they call it today didn't sway, they'd snap -- a scarier option. Never had fun in a tall building in Dallas, so that is on my bucket list. Figure out how to have fun at 60+ floors. Illegal, immoral and fattening are all, unfortunately, ruled out.
Comments: I think most of Oak Cliff survived the storm OK. The area worst hit was out closer to Carter High, I believe. Looking at the map in this morning's Dallas Morning News, it looks like there were 2 lines of damage, moving from SW to NE, and we were "between the lines." Coworkers in Coppell report alot of damage from baseball-sized hail that broke out car windows and skylights and left "craters" in their lawns.
Comments: When I had a real job my office was on the 46th floor of Republic Bank Tower and it did not have to get too windy to feel the building sway. On a windy day, you could press your face next to the window and see the building move. When it leaned one way, you could see the wall of the building curving all the way down. Then the wall would disappear as it leaned the other way. The elevators would scrape in the tracks when going up and down and if it got too windy they shut off the elevators. While going to college, I worked for Texas Power and Light a couple of summers and was in an elevator one day when it fell. Took several floors for the safety brake to stop it and when it stopped it was between floors. The fire department had to get us out. Glad that didn't happen 46 floors up.
Comments: I remember walking home from Harrell Budd the afternoon of April 2, 1957 with, I believe, Judy Wells and her smaller sibs, and saying to her that it was a perfect day for a tornado! It was about 45 minutes later and I was standing in the front yard watching one tear up Oak Cliff. I also remember the storm that occurred a couple of weeks later while we were in school. The wind was so strong that the top of the Republic Bank Bldg. (tallest bldg. downtown at the time) swayed 7 to 10 feet. Bill, so glad that your family is okay. Hope the power gets repaired soon.
Comments: We met with our accountant today at a restaurant in the northern Arlington. Had a nice lunch, then headed home to NE Dallas. We got a call from him on the way home, saying turn on the radio. His office was very near the Arlington tornado, turns out. I was glad we didn't meet him there! His house and office were fine, but damage was all around. We had calls this afternoon from friends who watched the national news and are sure the Metroplex was flattened. We had a lot of hard rain, but no wind or hail here in Lake Highlands. I hope all our SOC people are okay after today's wild storms.
Comments: This is the anniversary week. It was 55 years and one day ago!
Comments: Oh my! Isn't this the week of the Dallas tornado we witnessed in the 50s???? I hope all of you are safe! I saw videos of the storm today and am so sorry for the loss up north east way!
Comments: It was sure an exciting day in Arlington. We got by with just high winds, hard rain and some hail (up yo marble size). No damage. My son lives right in the middle of all the damage that occurred in South Arlington, but escaped with just some tree damage and the loss of his backyard fence, plus no power. Their church, about two blocks away was hit hard and lost about 25% of the roof on the family life center plus trees and power lines down. My 3-year-old granddaughter was there at pre-school. When it was over and I was able to get to her she was scared to death. They will probably all spend the night with us for at least tonight. All the damage you are seeing on TV was within a two block radius of their home. Praise God that it looks like nobody was even injured.
Comments: Hope everyone has survived the violent storms around Dallas. We could hear the tornado that was near the airport but only got a little hail at work.
Comments: Kathleen: My TV will not tune to MSNBC. I have tried several times, but it just won't do it. Occasionally it will tune to CNN or NPR, but very rarely. I think the last time was in 1998 and that was by accident.
Comments: Barry, I don't deny that the Democrats receive money from corporations and various groups The conservative dominated Supreme Court was trying to stack the deck in their favor. No one really believes that a corporation is a person and should be allowed to give unlimited amounts of money. As for Obama criticizing the Supreme Court, I think he is being naive. I am sure their ruling on health care went against him and the American people. Just another political decision by the Supreme Court in favor of the Republicans. Barry, I am glad that you keep informed. Since you have suggested in the past that I listen to various right wing commentators, I would like to suggest that you listen the the Ed Show and Rachel Maddow Show and the varIous other shows on MSNBC.
Comments: We Will Remember in November...! ![]()
Comments: I'm glad that Obama put the Supreme Court in its place yesterday. Imagine the nerve of those "unelected" judges in criticizing Obama's health care plan. How dare them accuse the law as being unconstitutional when Obama knows it is a good law. What are the Justices thinking when they question anything that Obama has done. After all, according to Obama, the law had almost unanomous support in Congress and has been extolled by professors, trial lawyers and union bosses all over the country. And all this time, I thought Congress had only passed the law by a few votes with no Republicans voting for the law.
Comments: Kathleen: So you are saying that the Democrats do not get contributions from corporations and wealthy individuals? That does not seem fair, does it? I wonder who George Soros was actually giving all that money to? And, who was that talk show guy who just gave a million dollars to an Obama PAC. Perhaps I misread that and it was actually the PAC-10. I try so hard to stay informed and I am glad that there are those out there to show me the error of my ways. Thanks.
Comments: The women in the Georgia legislature were carrying signs today and protesting "we will remember in November." It looks like the Supreme Court allowing corporations and other wealthy groups to provide unlimited campaign funds to Republican candidates may have backfired against them: they are using the money to fight among themselves.
Comments: Sunday....went to church, waved the palm frond.. Watched the youth proceed with animals down the aisle..including 2 'bleating' goats.. Went to grocery store..(Kroger) and they have a monopoly in Memphis..(They need a 'competition') Went to Vinyasa Yoga in evening.. All in all, a good day. Too hot, however.. ![]()
Comments: Sharon, at last here's the review of the Bissell 9200-P carpet cleaning machine: It does a good job! It's very hard for me to wrangle with my wrists, but David reports it's "not too bad" to push around. We bought some Bissell spot remover that works well, and we did not put any cleaning product into the machine -- just hot water. It doesn't leave the carpet wet, just sort of damp. I'm happy with the result. Now to figure out all the rebate stuff. ![]()
Comments: I wish we had a Like button!! Crockett is an interesting town.
Comments: Working on getting a place to have SOC luncheon on May 5 in Crockett. Will post to Events as soon as I have a confirmation of restaurant. |
