Thanks for the picture of the grave, Lynell.  Can anyone actually read the inscription?

My two year son and I were shopping in a grocery store in Cherokee, North Carolina. We were in Cherokee because my husband was evaluating the Cherokee school system for the BIA. There was a TV set playing above the people. No one was paying any attention to the TV until the announcement came on. The atmosphere of the small Safeway went totally silent as we stared at each other in disbelief.

I was on vacation from teaching school and I was in Fort Worth shopping with a friend.  The announcement came over the P A system in the department store and my friend and I were shocked and sad.  I was never a fan of Elvis but was saddened as I watched the way he declined as he grew older.

I was making sales calls, heard it on the radio, immediately called the biggest Elvis fan I knew, Linda (Mooney, Class of '65) Leverett. She didn't believe me.

I was at work at Dallas Legal Aid, my first lawyer job.  One of the secretaries heard it on the radio.  At first, none of us believed the news.  I idolized Elvis when he first became popular and, at age 11, had an Elvis "poodle skirt" -- felt circle skirt with appliques, etc. -- and Elvis tennies.  In 1969, Elvis flirted with me on an airplane in Chicago, and I was so dumbstruck, I couldn't even speak.  Darn, there went my big chance; I could have been the one to find him dead on the bathroom floor!  Seriously, though, he was awesome.  Beautiful voice, and -- incredibly -- in person, he was even better-looking than in pictures.  That's probably why I couldn't talk:  momentarily lost in that gorgeous creamy skin and velvety black eyes (swoon)!  Don't mind me.  Move along; nothing to see here.

Do you remember where you were when you learned that the King was dead? I was driving up out of the courthouse parking lot.  My car radio was on an AM station, and as soon as I got to the ramp outside the building, I heard the news. The money-taker at the courthouse was in tears.

Last Saturday I met up with the Triumph sports car club for breakfast at Strack's in the Spring/Klein area. This is the same place I've twice run into Lyle Lovett dining there.

Anyway, there were 15 of us present on Saturday. I was sitting between one guy who had just returned from a family vacation in Paris (France ... not Texas). On the other side was a couple who had gone to Cape Cod for their summer vacation. They rented a house for $1,000 a week and stayed 7 weeks.

By the time breakfast was over I felt like a slacker and underachiever.

The club V.P. (Mike H.) drives this beautiful 1962 TR3:

The Cape Cod guy (Steve) played a little prank on Mike by placing a special decal on the back of Mike's car. We were going to blame it on Lyle Lovett but he was a no-show that day.

Jud, the homemade version's better, and it sounds like some places ripped off the Brockles dressing -- or vice versa.  A lettuce wedge is still the best and easiest of all salads, in my opinion.

The Brockles dressing is very similar to what Kip's put on their lettuce wedges. And used to be available in jars in the grocery store.

Sharon, I can't remember Arthur's salad dressing, but this Brockles stuff is good. Next time I'll cut back on the garlic and take my chances with the vampires.  I'm e-mailing you the recipe that I got off Facebook.

Barry, you have interesting dreams.

This is a little scary and I hate to admit it, but you were in one of my dreams last night.  I was on Harry Hines collecting pencils and ran into you on the street in front of your questionable "stereo shop".  There were some signs on the walls that seemed to offer amusements other than a good sound.  You said business was good.  Quite obviously better than mine, since I was the one collecting pencils.  And, you still looked just the same as in high school.  Strange

Lynell:  Did the Brockle's salad dressing taste similar to the one served at Arthur's?  I can still remember wanting just a salad so I could have the dressing.  It's been so long but I seem to recall that Arthur's dressing was a little garlicky!  Well, I wasn't hungry but now I'm thinking chicken fried steak and yellow gravy with rolls and a house salad.  Yum!  If only Arthur's was still around.

Jud, I have to make use of that little spyglass on the lower right and blow stuff up 150% to read it.  I don't know what happened in that last post of mine.  Operator error, most likely.

I became so giddy from today's 1/4" rain that I made up a batch of Brockles Special Dressing. Remember that wonderful restaurant on Canton Street? My mother and aunts took me there for my 12th birthday, and I fell in love with their dressing. (And the busboy, but that's another story.) The homemade version is very good, so if you'd like a copy of the recipe, just e-mail me. I don't know what happened to the busboy, but I found the secret recipe on Facebook.

If you know how many calories there are in mayonnaise and blue cheese, please keep that information to yourself.

Phyllis, gotta love that Onion.  They have the story right!  However, the "Jane" story is slightly suspect -- but the picture is cute!  I once had a letter read on a national radio show.  They called me Lynn and referred to me as "this guy."  sigh.

Peaches:  About the time you posted your "prayer request" I received the below email from a friend.  It's been around before but, I think it is so appropriate. Timing was perfect.

Hi Lord, its me again.

We are getting older and things are getting bad here. Gas prices are too high, no jobs, and food and heating costs too high. I know some have taken you out of our schools, government and even Christmas, but Lord I'm asking you to come back and re-bless America.  We really need you! There are more of us who want you than those who don't!

Thank You Lord,
