Lynell:  Some time ago, my sister and her family lived in Lake Highlands, but it was south of Northwest Highway and both of her boys went to Bryan Adams.  Go figure.  I always thought it was very strange.  Of course, I never could understand why Lake Highlands HS is in Dallas, but is part of the Richardson ISD.

I'm taking a vacation day tomorrow, so Happy 4th of July to everyone.  Be safe.

There is, however, a neighborhood called Moss Farm but we're not in it. We're in Highlands West. It's all part of Lake Highlands. Confused? It seems like some changes are for no good reason.

Trinity Heights, Fruitdale, Lisbon -- all those little towns have virtually disappeared. I suppose that could be said of Moss Farm, where I live now. I heard that term once or twice when we moved here in 1980, but not in the last 20 years or so.

And what about Fruitdale.  I grew up there and I never hear about it anymore.  Just think, I had a choice of going to SOC or to Wilmer Hutchins HS.  How different things would have been.  I would never have met Geo Johnny or all the other wonderful SOCites.

I've heard news stories lately about South Dallas, only to discover they're talking about South Oak Cliff.

What happen to South Oak Cliff...now it is North Oak Cliff?  Is there a distinction now?

Sorry, but the neon is already spoken for.  Now, if you really want it, Joan might make you a deal!

Hey, Geo Johnny:

I'd be happy to take that Miata off your hands, cheap!  I've been looking for a 2004 car with only 20,000 miles on it.  Plus, the neon would fit right in my 'hood in North Oak Cliff!

Jud, now that you mention it, my will is in need of revision - let me sleep on it and I'll have the attys contact you if they need any info (I can never remember if it is "Judson Harmon" or "Harmon Judson"?).

Barry, tell Joan I'm not sure how many miles the neon lights have on them, but it is fewer than the 20,487 mi. that are on the 2004 Miata. I guess I need to get to drivin' it more frequently.

Joan was speechless when I informed her of your pre-demise bequest.  It is rare that she does not have something to say.  Tell Dru to remove them from the Miata with care and package them carefully (not with wire cutters!).  If you have not promised your metal detector to anyone, I would like it, as well.  And, anything else you might have that you don't owe money on......

Pretty cool stash.  I like the ring.  Also like the lighting in the Mitia - lucky Joan.

Suburban "beach" hunting:

Yesterday, rather than trek down to Galveston, I decided to metal detect a local fishing pond. The drought has caused the water to recede, exposing a new 4 ft. "beach" that was once underwater.

In less than two hours I discovered an interesting variety of items once lost to the Ages. I found my 3rd ring of the year (sterling silver woman's band) and I also found the proverbial "hook, line and sinker" (uh, minus the "line").

My pal, renowned gemologist Spuds Macpherson, authenticated the pedigree of the ring. Here are the expedition pics:

Mike P. - I'm pleased to hear that the U.S. Postal Service got the parcel to you. I still look exactly as pictured in that directory.

Barry, I've willed the blue neons to you. If Joan still has the MiniCooper (at the time of my demise) you might consider installing them under her dash. Frankly, I don't do much night driving and most of the time I forget the neons are there. An independent switch operates them. (see pic)

John is so full of it.  After reading his post about assigning me a new ringtone I decided to test him.  I called-he answered!  He's always glad when anyone calls-even those he continues to poke fun at.  He did say that I could have the Miata neon lights when he meets his maker out in the woods of geo-cache land.  Now I'll just have to figure out what to do with them!

Lynell, I don't have any snake boots but could have used some this morning as I was metal detecting along the reedy bank of a river. Found nothing but shotgun shells and empty cartridges.

Barry, I've been experimenting with ringtones for my cellphone and put together one that is now linked to your number. It has an "automotive" theme, in keeping with your avocation and pays homage to our 1950's upbringing.

So now when the phone rings and I recognize the song, I can turn to Dru and say "don't answer that - It's Barry". (I hope the following link works as planned)

John, when I was much younger, I had a pair of snake boots.  They were stilettos.  What do your snake boots look like?

Sandy, thank you for the great invitation.

Snake boots are not exactly snake proof....So, just make a lot of noise as you are walking along....ie; carry a long staff and swing it to and fro in front of you.  The snakes don't want to meet you any more than you want to meet them and this will give them time to skedaddle from your path...well, except for the rattlers...they just tend to curl up and stay put rattling...but I would think hearing that that would be enough warning to back track IMMEDIATELY!

I enjoy your adventures John...thanks for sharing them with us.

Geo-Johnny:

Can I have the neon lights from the Miata when you disappear in the woods?  Dru can keep the Miata, but those lights would look good on my boat.

John, do you wear snakebite-proof boots for your expeditions?  Those are clever caches, but 500 feet into the woods? Yikes.  Does Dru wait in the car in that Marilyn Monroe dress you bought from Debbie?

Mike, you're welcome.

Another of Stephanie's geocaches that made me smile was one named "The Last Bird in The Technology Forest". It was hidden in the woods off a street named Technology Forest (big surprise). Again, I didn't know what to expect ... I pictured a stuffed owl or something like that.

This one turned out to be a colorful little birdhouse hanging in the middle of the woods that contained the log to sign and a few trade items.

http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/last_bird.jpg

Stephanie goes by the geocaching nickname of "Smukke" a scandinavian term that means something like "pretty one". She was a major force in geocaching in this area for a couple of years. Then a year ago she had a heart attack  at age 49 and dropped out of sight. Two weeks ago she emerged and is back in the game with "Dead Ringer".

Tonight I was reviewing the geocaches I located last week and one of them stood out for its cleverness. The cache was titled "Dead Ringer" and the hider is a local gal named Stephanie whose caches exhibit lots of imagination.

This one was hidden about 500 ft. in the woods in the roots of a fallen tree. I wasn't sure what to expect from the way it was named. Turned out to be an old Princess phone in which the inside works had been removed to make way to house the log and some trading trinkets. Here's a pic:
