Comments: SOC Summer Luncheon - Saturday, July 16, 2011 - 11:30 am - 2:30 pm at Peaches Walker's home. Food will be provided by hostesses. Please go to soc63.com - Events Page for more details. Must RSVP.
Comments: TNX Sharon! Don & I will have to try it soon . . . we love Italian!
Comments: Sandy: Joe's Italian Cafe if located on Beltline (south side) at Surveyor. It is about a block or so west of Sam's Club. The food is really great and the lunch prices are verrry reasonable. I like sweet pickles with my cheese sandwich too.
Comments: Dear John (as in Southworth); Man you are a tough old boot; hard nosed as heck in your sales techniques; no returns is acceptable under the existing conditions (I believe the word is FREE). Thanks again to GeoJohnny for coming through. Sharon Reeves; appreciate the 'welcome back' and reminder of the upcoming 50th. It is not entirely out of the question for me to be there with some good planning. Hopefully I can bring my 'child bride' with me. I keep practicing the marriage routine and hopefully I got it right this time. She keeps me young and would kill me if I even thunk about departing... Funny, nobody ever splained it so well. ![]() My brother (Homer, class of '61) went to his 50th a few days ago and had fun; some subtle surprises and some not so subtle surprises but after all, it's been 50 years already for him. I'll keep my eyes glued to this site to see WHEN and WHERE. All my kids and grandkids live in Ft. Worth area so I have a natural reason to visit. Reckon it will be in October? Thanks all for the imaginative comments and memories.
Comments: Re: Your request of June 20 Memo To M. Peters: Parcel is in the mail. All sales are final. This means You. Buyer Beware. No refunds. Ever.
Comments: Sharon - a girl after my own heart! I too love cheese & pickle sandwiches! Only difference . . . I use slices of sweet pickle instead of dill. Have loved them since I was a kid & still do! Where in Addison is Joe's Italian Cafe? Is it on the Belt Line strip or maybe Midway or Marsh?
Comments: I always took my lunch and it was the same most days. I was then, and still am, a lover of cheese sandwiches. Mrs. Baird's white bread, miracle whip, american cheese and three slices of dill pickle. (My mom invented stackers way back then!) Of course, I always had a bag of Fritos. I ate at Joe's Italian Cafe in Addison, again last Thursday. The food is just wonderful. Unfortunately, its layout wouldn't work for a SOC luncheon. The place was fairly empty when we got there, but it filled up nicely when a lot of the Mav's parade goers came in. Hey, Mike Peters. Glad to see you are still checking in with us. I wondered where you went for so long. Stay in touch. You know our 50th is just around the corner.
Comments: Lunch at SOC, very hazy memories. Vague recollections of the lunch line, ice cream/graham crackers/rolls, hardly anything about who I sat with. One clear memory, watching Jimmy Nicodemus eat his entire lunch - sandwich, chips, etc - without anything to drink. I almost gagged just watching him.
Comments: Memo To Bill Akins: Please note I am no longer collecting SOC memorabilia. Just today I had the winning $4.6 million bid at the auction for Marilyn Monroe's classic "subway" dress. Thought Dru might like it for her birthday this week. I hope the dress gets here before they find my bank account is a little bit light.
Comments: Memo To Mike Peters: I have a reunion directory that might fit your needs, however I'm sure there are others who could undercut the price on me. Will send details by email.
Comments: Johnny: I don't remember sitting at the corner table with you or the "L" on the sign. Personally, I always wondered why you had such a problem getting dates when I was turning girls down almost every weekend. I even tried to convince some of them to go out with you! (All pure fantasy, of course) What I do remember about lunch was the day that Brooks Barr came by our table and said he would be waiting outside. It seems that he was offended that my ROTC company had asked his "supposed" steady to represent us at the Military Ball. Of course, I was to be the lucky escort. She went with me, I had a great time, I hope she had a great time and the bruises from Brooks' fists went away in a few days. And, she was crowned military sweetheart. I talked to her at the 45th reunion and she didn't even know that Brooks and I had a "discussion" about her.
Comments: Thanks for the info regarding GeoJohnny. John may not want MY first-born.
Comments: Mike, you might contact John "Geojohnny" Southworth. He is trying to corner the market on old Dens on eBay. He'll probably want your first born (he is very materialistic you know), but it's a starting place.
Comments: Hated classes? I was not particularly fond of any of them but the teacher that I remember most was Bruce Norman; he was so neat and down-to-earth. Well, naturally I do remember Mrs Paschall, not in the details of Mr. Green, but I do remember her as my Homeroom teacher. I can remember her regularly ranting about us being Silly Sophomores. As an afterthought, and many years later of maturing, she really was quite a lovely little lady.
Comments: Question... Since I infrequently attend the fun things such as the luncheons and reunions (long way from the Northeast), does anyone have a spare booklet from a previous reunion that has the pics in it? I never had a '63 DEN and for me to find my '61 or '62 is out of the question (up in the attic I am sure). Thanks all; Gonna be near 90 in Pittsburgh this week; we are gonna feel the heat.
Comments: You left out a very descriptive word when speaking of the gym, SMELLY, at least it was in the guys gym. I cannot admit ever to visiting the girls gym, not without starting an entirely new discussion, likely not suitable for the guest book.
Comments: Um, in a word...Algebra! X's and Y's are not meant to replace numbers! Especially while wearing sweaty gym shorts in a steamy locker room. Wait, I think I'm getting confused.
Comments: Okay, Mike. Nobody's taking the bait about classes they hated, so it's up to you and me. I'll go first: P.E. That horrible gym suit, that steamy yucky dressing room, calesthenics -- then get dressed and go to your next class. Ugh!
Comments: OMG. the SOC '63 Monday morning reading is so entertaining! All those memories and fantasies? Keep em coming though.
Comments: Congratulations to: South Oak Cliff High School 2011 Valedictorian Ja’Mesha Morgan – 18 College: Howard UniversityMajor: Criminal Justice
and

Comments: How about a new topic: CLASSES I HATED.
Comments: Janelle, I have both scares and scars from gym class at Storey when a girl told me to meet her after school behind the gym so she could beat me up. By the way, I was a no-show.
Comments: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY AND GRANDFATHER'S DAY to all SOC fathers!
Comments: Lynell, I thought "scares" looked wrong. thanks for the "scars." Perhaps that was a Freudian slip and I was really just "scared."
Comments: And JS, I think you misunderstood. What Adrea said when she entered the room was "has anyone seen THE john?"
Comments: The main thing I remember about lunch was my great scientific discovery that I could freeze a canned Coke and it would thaw out and be about right by lunchtime. They made cans stronger then. That chicken bone thing was tacky, Janelle. I can see why it left scars.
Comments: I remember that I always sat at the same table during lunch with various girl friends. I remember Larry Macon liked to sit with us. Once Mr. Lloyd came over and suggested that he move, but Larry didn't take the hint. Larry just kept sitting there smiling and acting silly. Of course, we were all happy to have him sit with us. Then, I will never forget that Mr. Lloyd mumbled under his breath "a thorn among the roses" and walked off.
Comments: Geez, everyone is focusing on the stupid tables in the cafeteria. Doesn't anyone care that I, clearly, still bare the scares inflicted upon me by Kayleen!
Comments: Funny how we all have different memories. I don't remember any distinct separate tables. I remember just sitting anywhere based on how quickly we could get to the cafeteria. I frequently looked for a bunch of girls and sat with them. And thanks John and Barry. I was always alert to whoever you dated once, so I'd be a breath of fresh air for them! (see what I mean about memories? Obviously mine are more like fantasies!)
Comments: John, you and Adrea; me and Leonard Fitzgerald, who didn't know I was alive. At least Leonard never showed up anywhere and asked, "Pssst. Where's the Lynell?" |
