Comments: Talking about clubs, does anyone remember the name of a disco club located in the Holiday Inn at LBJ and Central?? Went there in the early eighties..thanks!!
Comments: Jud, the name of that club would be The Pirate's Nook, which if I remember was at the very end of Elm St in Dallas. Another popular place was just a few doors down the street, the It'll Do Club.
Comments: Sam will be along 'directly' as they say in the country or wherever.. He told me he operated the 'clay bird' machine because he doesn't do guns.. It's nice to know a few of those people are not into shooting guns all the time.. I'm saying that, knowing that all my uncles, cousins, grandfather...hunted and I really enjoyed the venison when my grandfather shot a deer, but some people do go on and on about guns..
Comments: Ah, good memories. Bill, what was the name of the club you and I went to so often? The one where Just Us Five (with virtuoso drummer) played. And don't forget Craig Morton's hit club (forget the name) near Bachmann Lake. And the Cellar in Ft Worth. And the original Shakey's, and the first fish'n chips place in Dallas, and the Purple Room Lounge.
Comments: I was responding to Lynell's post at 1:26 because that is what my computer pulled up. I was surprised to see so many postings when I posted my comments. By the way Sam, what was your score while skeet shooting?
Comments: Lynwll, There are plenty of Mexican restaurants that have good food. The last time we went to Marianoes we had to wait to be seated. I have trouble understanding why this place is so popular. I would like to recommend Desperadoes on Greenville or Rancho Martinez in Lakewood. I also like Gonzalez and Morelia in Oak Cliff. I had lunch at the Celebration today. I was saying to someone that I used to eat at a restaurant called the Jagerstuben where I would order Hasenpfeffer or Entenbraten. I always like to impress people by saying the name of that restaurant. It went out of business years ago. I guess I don't feel as "cool" as I once did because I am not as easily impressed nowadays.
Comments: I was dating E.Z. in 1977 and he hung out on Greenville, wearing NikNik shirts, mostly at Humperdinks. Do you remember the hot pick up bar at the Marriott on 635. What was the name of that bar? Oh, yes, the year of the frozen margarita machine was 1971.
Comments: He does look like a wild and crazy guy..doesn't he..? It does 'resemble' you...JS... I don't understand this Nik Nik 'thingy'. That photo says 1975 and I was in Memphis but about to move back to Dallas for 2 1/2 yrs..We were back by February 1975.. I finally graduated from UNT in 1976, a year after returning to Texas.. I shopped at Town East and occasionally Neimans at NorthPark, and I was very impressed with Olla Podrida at the time.. If Sears, Penneys, Walmart, KMart, Neimans, and whoever/whatever else I shopped at ...didn't carry Nik Niks, I wasn't aware of them....??? ![]()
Comments: Geez - I almost thought it was Ron Chapman at first glance. You and Lynell must have been people to behold for being cool. Actually, you still are...
Comments: Ginger, it is me. At the time I was working as a supervisor at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Ron DeHart and Connie Fleming were working there too. The very next year (1976) I shaved the beard and was recruited by Prudential to move to Houston and help kick off a new concept in health care called an "HMO".
Comments: Johnny, you are one wild and crazy guy! That shirt just has to be a Nik Nik.
Comments: Is that you, John...? I know how you like to kid around...? Somebody email me and tell me whether it's really John.. All John needs is an opening to make a 'Funny' and he's 'off and runnin Me, I just like to make Smileys....
Comments: Ginger, that was a swinging part of town wasn't it. Seems like the Campisi family was behind the Egyptian Room? The Levee was a great place for Dixieland music with Ed Bernet and his banjo pickin' group. I've posted the following pic before, but for your general amusement here is JS circa 1975 at The Beggar Club over near Love Field: http://people.consolidated.net/swsw/1975js.jpg
Comments: What about the Egyptian Room on Mockingbird. I liked their Pizza and a glass of Rose wine.. Wasn't the Egyptian Room owned by SOC' people...? Remember, Remember......Somebody knows the answer...
Comments: I think I have been to all those places too.. That was so long ago...I was so young..but those names do 'ring a bell'...I had forgotten about the Levee, JS, until you mentioned it.. I also went dancing at Lou Ann's , quite frequently, back when I was very young.. It's a wonder that I can still remember...
Comments: JS, was that you at the Levee on Mockingbird? NIk-Nik brand knit shirt with the long pointy collar, white belt, gold chains, Mac Davis hairdo? I was wearing hip huggers, tie-dye blouse, a floral headband, platform shoes and a wiglet. My husband must have been so proud.
Comments: Boy, it's been a LONG time since I last thought about Mariano's and the clubs/restaurants of the Old Town area on Greenville Ave. In the mid & early 1970's I was the swinging single who could be found at happy hours at Mariano's, Friday's, Daddy's Money and other establishments that dealt in adult beverages and the backgammon fad. Wasn't The Levee around there too?
Comments: That's what I thought, too, Ginger.
Comments: Well...They are missing out on a bunch of money from Nice People.. That silly Mariano...! or whoever...! ![]()
Comments: Martha, you are quite the historian! It might amaze you to learn that Mariano's does not want to host a SOC luncheon despite their very large taxidermied bear in their foyer and ample space. The manager says they will do a luncheon IF they can limit the menu to three items and IF one person pays the full tab with a credit card to make it easier on their employees. Soooo, we make it easy on the employees by having our luncheons elsewhere. Maybe we should stop by there first and get a picture with the bear before we spend $$$ elsewhere. Peaches has asked the manager if we can set up a luncheon there, too -- so it's not just me he doesn't like.
Comments: First Frozen Margarita Machine... I'll celebrate that...! I don't like them any other way, than Frozen.. I haven't made one in a while myself... They sold them cheap during Happy Hour in Austin.. Until that time in my life, it was frozen daquiris...Now, I like Frozen Margaritas...too... Ole..! We need a smiley with a sombrero....
Comments: Ginger....We can celebrate the invention of the first frozen Margarita machine. Introduced this day in Dallas in 1970 something at Mariano's Mexican Cuisine restaurant. www.examiner.com, Tequila 101
Comments: It's Tuesday..Time to enter the world of 'No Holiday..' Just plain old weekday, I think..? Of course, feel free to make it any kind of day.. you wish.. Happy Belated BD...Lynell.. Happy Tuesday, everyone... I've heard the '62' people had fun at their Fling... Sam said so...
Comments: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday Dear Sharon Capps Turner, happy birthday to you and mannnny more!!!!!! It was great seeing you at our luncheon for the first time!
Comments: Thank you, Jud, and Happy Day to all those who make this day extra nice for the wonderful moms in their lives. Happy Mother's Day!
Comments: Happy Mother's Day to all! And Lynell, Happy Friend's Day! John, thanks for the kind words!
Comments: Happy Mother's Day to all the SOC mothers and grandmothers!
Comments: John, I am sure Jud gives excellent advice. After last weeks stock market losts, Jud may be hearing from all of us.
Comments: What Clara Belle did for Clown Suits...!
Comments: Kathleen, I must caution you against following my earlier investment advice. You'd be better served to seek a session with a professional like our Mr. Caldwell. Jud is to "portfolio performance" (how can I put this?) ... he's like what Jonas Salk has done for polio victims ... what Tom Selleck has done for Hawiian shirts. I could go on, but you get my drift. |
