How could Ms. Bickley only be 71 years old?  That's younger than us (or, is it "we"?).

Thanks for the info, Leftnell. Too bad we didn't have elementary school yearbooks...that would really bring back some memories.

Hey, Lisbon Lancaster Road Scholars.

Remember Miss Batla/Mrs. Bickley? She was our music teacher who was so gifted, and who loved us all dearly even us (me) who sang with gusto but not well.

The Dallas Morning News

Thursday, March 22, 2001

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday for Elizabeth "Betty" Bickley, a former music teacher who taught at DISD schools for 39 years.

Ms. Bickley, 71, died of heart failure at her home on Saturday. Her funeral will be at Wheatland United Methodist Church in Dallas, with internment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Born in Dallas, Ms. Bickley graduated with a bachelor's degree in music from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman's University, in Denton. She earned a master's degree in elementary education from North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas.

Ms. Bickley, a trumpet player, was offered jobs as a musician, but she decided to become a band instructor in Farmersville. After a year, she began her career in the Dallas Independent School District.

In Dallas, Ms. Bickley first taught music at her childhood school of Lisbon Elementary. She then transferred to Adelle Elementary, where she taught music, science, art and specialized reading.

Her relatives said conveying her passion for music to children was her inspiration.

"She loved her students," said her sister, Mary Lou Scott of Snyder, Texas. "She was like a mother hen; she just mothered everybody."

Ms. Bickley wanted her pupils to realize their potential, Ms. Scott said.

"She always said, 'All things are possible,'" she said.

That optimism and love of her work continued to motivate Ms. Bickley even after she began to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, Ms. Scott said.

"Whatever she started to do, she always persevered, and she expected her students to do the same," Ms. Scott said.

Ms. Bickley was forced to retire in 1989 because of her arthritis.

Ms. Bickley's interest in art led her to become involved in crafts. She was, her sister said, an accomplished horsewoman who trained colts during college.

Ms. Bickley's husband, Rankin Bickley, and Ms. Scott's husband died together in a car accident in January.

Besides her sister, Ms. Bickley is survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Odd Fellows Lodge or Wheatland United Methodist Church, 8000 S. Hampton Road, Dallas, TX 75232.

I’m so sorry to hear about our classmate, Tommy Tackett. He was a nice fellow. Also, it’s sad to hear that both Mr. Gunter and the lovely Miss Pirtle have passed.

One that isn't is Carolyn (Pirtle) McNabb, typing teacher, and best looking female teacher at SOC. She passed away on Sept. 20, 2018. She was the only teacher who never had to tell me to stop talking in class. Just the sight of her rendered me speechless!

James,
I’m not on here as much as I should be to check in. The loss of our parents is very emotional and sad. May you find peace in your sweet memories of your mother.
I hope all you SOCites and your families are well and safe.

I don't usually post anything on this site just read what has been posted. I can only speak for myself but this year has been a year of increased faith. At this point in America it has been heart wrenching to see what we as a nation have become. If you feel the same please respond with a comment.

Hello All I'm not a frequent poster on this site but I still like to read about what's going on with everyone.  Some of you may remember my Mother - may remember my sister Janis too.  We lost my Mother at 94 years, this week - blessed with many many wonderful years with her and we will miss her so much.  Below is the link to her tribute page - I'd love to read any memories you have of our life back then.  Hope we can all see one another soon.

Ken:  I have often wondered that myself.  Danny looks more and more like his dad and Jan looks more and more like her mother. Suzanne has totally gray hair while Jan keeps her hair color the same as always.  Suzanne's brother, Don, passed away some time ago and Jan's older sister, Martha, recently passed away. Suzanne plays the piano/organ at Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona, AZ.  Their service is on the internet.  Beautiful area.

Hang in there Barry Grubbs...and remember the golden years are not for sissies. In fact, I think the years at SOC were our true "Golden Years". After walking three miles a day for years, I had knee surgery last year for a torn meniscus. People asked me what I did to cause it, I told them I had a lot of birthdays. While I have your attention, answer a DNA question for me regarding cousins. Speaking from a photogenic perspective, how did Barry Gibbs & Danny Willard evolve from the same gene pool as Jan Willard & Suzie Darnell? [confused]

Yes, they are quite the rage.  In the past, no news was good news, but last night I got the results of the swab- negative.  So, I am once again free to go to Baylor and be and be poked and prodded and just generally be inconvenienced.

Well, tomorrow I get another covid swab.  This will be the 4th one.  I had a sleep study 2 weeks ago and they found that I quit breathing 170+ times and my blood oxygen level dropped to 80%.  It's amazing how many people I know that use a CPAP machine.  I guess I can add my name to the list.  This Friday I go back again and they will determine what kind of CPAP I will need.
Now I will wait for Bosko to chime in with his much appreciated comments.
