Comments: Sorry about the missed spelled name. Showing my age. Billy England Class of 63
Comments: I saw a funny shirt the other day. It said: "Never piss off an old person. The older we get, the less 'a life sentence' is a deterrent."
Comments: Phyllis, ha. You think you’re old? I believe I’m older. Sheesh. How‘d this happen? My heart thinks I’m 17 but everything else says otherwise.
Comments: Billy, is your name spelled right? What year did you graduate?
Comments: It’s been 57 yrs. since I have seen you guys. Hello
Comments: Sorry, Lynell, I didn't catch the date on that obituary. My bad! But, what can you expect? I'm old!
Comments: Mrs. Bickley was an interesting person. She’d been in a traveling all-girl band. I’ll bet she had stories! (I’m thinking Some Like it Hot!)
Comments: How could Ms. Bickley only be 71 years old? That's younger than us (or, is it "we"?).
Comments: Thanks for the info, Leftnell. Too bad we didn't have elementary school yearbooks...that would really bring back some memories.
Comments: Hey, Lisbon Lancaster Road Scholars. Remember Miss Batla/Mrs. Bickley? She was our music teacher who was so gifted, and who loved us all dearly even us (me) who sang with gusto but not well. The Dallas Morning News Thursday, March 22, 2001 Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday for Elizabeth "Betty" Bickley, a former music teacher who taught at DISD schools for 39 years. Ms. Bickley, 71, died of heart failure at her home on Saturday. Her funeral will be at Wheatland United Methodist Church in Dallas, with internment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Born in Dallas, Ms. Bickley graduated with a bachelor's degree in music from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman's University, in Denton. She earned a master's degree in elementary education from North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas. Ms. Bickley, a trumpet player, was offered jobs as a musician, but she decided to become a band instructor in Farmersville. After a year, she began her career in the Dallas Independent School District. In Dallas, Ms. Bickley first taught music at her childhood school of Lisbon Elementary. She then transferred to Adelle Elementary, where she taught music, science, art and specialized reading. Her relatives said conveying her passion for music to children was her inspiration. "She loved her students," said her sister, Mary Lou Scott of Snyder, Texas. "She was like a mother hen; she just mothered everybody." Ms. Bickley wanted her pupils to realize their potential, Ms. Scott said. "She always said, 'All things are possible,'" she said. That optimism and love of her work continued to motivate Ms. Bickley even after she began to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, Ms. Scott said. "Whatever she started to do, she always persevered, and she expected her students to do the same," Ms. Scott said. Ms. Bickley was forced to retire in 1989 because of her arthritis. Ms. Bickley's interest in art led her to become involved in crafts. She was, her sister said, an accomplished horsewoman who trained colts during college. Ms. Bickley's husband, Rankin Bickley, and Ms. Scott's husband died together in a car accident in January. Besides her sister, Ms. Bickley is survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Odd Fellows Lodge or Wheatland United Methodist Church, 8000 S. Hampton Road, Dallas, TX 75232.
